NBA Mock Draft

By FLO RUF Minnesota Timberwolves Scout

Minnesota (AP) -- First of all, it is an honor to be able to share my opinion on this year’s draft with you readers. In my short time with Minnesota, it has been both a humbling experience and also an enlightening one. I have learnt many things in my field of work and it is great that I will be able to try and use it in writing this article. I apologize that this won’t look at the full draft as time is hard to find but I will make sure I try to predict the lottery order as good as possible.

And I won’t keep all of you waiting much longer.

1. Washington -- The Wizards were just lucky to get to this pick. Word has it (Although I am very much against this) that a move involving the first pick and Kevin Garnett is on the books. From my observations, Moses Chara is definitely the most talented and experienced player in this year’s draft. Washington doesn’t need the many guards and forwards that the Draft has to offer so a smart move would be to take Chara and trade down. Duke’s Moses Chara should be a shoe-in here.

2. LA Clippers -- The Clippers found themselves another lottery draft pick and will make the most of it. With Sam Cassell surely set to retire and Shaun Livingston having proven nothing in playing the point guard position, the Clippers would find it wise to draft a point guard. Nigeria’s Johnny Ibeabuchi is nothing short of overrated. After strong workouts with several teams, including the Clippers, the 6’2” shooting guard may wind up being drafted here. His conditioning, strength and reputation of being a team player- along with his modest playmaking skills, could be a good reason why he would succeed in the NBA as a point guard. If he plays many minutes in LA at PG, he could succeed very well. Ibeabuchi’s weakness is his shot and although the Clippers may prefer a guard who won’t need to take shots, it will be worrying to see what happens when the opposition forces him to shoot.

3. Utah Jazz -- The Jazz also have a promising roster and if it wasn’t for Andrei Kirilenko’s injury problems, they would be a fringe playoff team. In regard to Grant Galanov, who was the best player in the CBA (Chinese Basketball Association, not the CBA in the States), the former star from Central Arkansas has as good a chance as being the number 1 or 2 picks as the two players mentioned above. Galanov is said to resemble Kevin Garnett the most with his athleticism. However, he is stronger than Garnett is and has a more chiseled power game. The 6’9” forward would be a great fit for the Jazz in that he can play all positions from centre, power forward and even some small forward. It’s the perfect opportunity for both parties as Galanov can always fill in for Kirilenko whenever he is injured and can back up at all three positions off the bench. If Jerry Sloan wants, he can always start Galanov and Carlos Boozer at the two big men spots and bench Greg Ostertag.

4. New Orleans Hornets -- Once Chris Paul steps into the starting lineup, expect the Hornets to improve drastically. The team is deep in the wing and guard positions but it is thin at the 5. Haji Iwanaka should be the man they want. The 6’11” Nigerian should do a lot of damage if he gets playing time. His volleyball roots explain his freak athleticism and his defensive instincts are top notch. He would be an instant upgrade over Chris Anderson in both on court and off court situations. After a string of strong workout sessions, the big man is looking to be a lock in the lottery now.

5. Milwaukee Bucks -- What Milwaukee sorely missed was someone who could attack from off the bench. Bobby Simmons was disappointing after being signed in the off season while Toni Kukoc will likely be leaving the team. This leaves a gap at the small forward position. With Andrew Bogut on the team, fellow Utah Ute Quint Hamilton might join him. The 6’9” junior has got a good touch from outside and a surprisingly good mid range game. He is a liability on defense though but still has a lot of potential. He should be able to put in a good effort by backing up at the small forward position. Hamilton seems like a logical choice because of what he can bring to the bucks’ bench and also with his friendship with former Ute Bogut.

6. Minnesota Timberwolves -- The Washington Wizards have been said to be very interested in Levander Beatty. Beatty is a 7’1” senior from Auburn who has had a mixed bag of success during his 4 years in college. His team never made it to the NCAA tourney, although they did win the NIT two years ago. The big man has never even been spoken of as a lottery prospect before but due to two very good workouts with the Wizards and him dominating at the Pre-Draft Camp in Orlando (Averaged 18 ppg and 14 rpg against a majority of smaller players), the Wizards are reportedly extremely interested in the big. Assuming that the Wolves take Beatty in order to try and get Moses Chara off of Washington, Beatty will be making an unexpected climb in the draft order. (On a personal note, I wouldn’t want our team to do this especially since trading for Moses would most definitely mean putting in a lot more than just Beatty)

7. Charlotte Bobcats -- Liu Ishito will most probably be taken either earlier or even drop out of the lottery. But it’s hard to overlook how the Bobcats could make the perfect draft selection by picking the Utah product. The undersized shooting guard dominated alongside team mate Quint Hamilton as he scored at will (Averaged 27.5 ppg). Charlotte is shaping up to be an exciting team with Sean May and Emeka Okafor manning the paint and Gerald Wallace playing stifling defense on the perimeter. Once Raymond Felton slides into the starting position as point guard, the team just needs an able scorer to allow them to contend for a place in the playoffs. Ishito is perfect for this job.

8. New York Knicks -- New York is a talented team that just doesn’t bring it together. Don’t blame the players though; blame Isaiah Thomas who foolishly has grouped together a handful of players who all play the same style (ie. Shoot-first, Pass-second). I’d love to give Thomas the benefit of the doubt but I really can’t so I will need to say that he will pick a player like Lawrence Washington of New Zealand origin. At first sight, Washington may be the type of player the Knicks need. He can bring physical play and flair to the team’s thin frontcourt and one day could start in Antonio Davis’ place. However, he might be a power forward but he’s only 6’6”. Talk about being undersized and not to speak any less of Lawrence Washington but he is definitely not a Charles Barkley. So using a logical sense of thinking, due to Thomas’ lack of a brain, I have him ‘surprising’ the MSG by selecting an undersized PF like Washington.

9. Philadelphia 76ers -- The Sixers should look for someone who could fill in for Iverson whenever he is going to leave but the problem at the forward positions are probably priority for the side. Jamaal Mashburn and Chris Webber won’t be around for much longer and the two will need someone new to play back up to them for the next 2-3 seasons. Seal Everett is the man for the job. A friend of Portland’s Joey Graham, the Oklahoma State sophomore is athletic, smart and plays hard defense. His potential is rumored to be off the scale as he has shown a lot of improvement since his senior year in high school. The 6’9” SF also showed his versatility as he played at the 4 and 5 spots during the Pre-Draft camp and put up a surprising 19 ppg, 9 rpg and 4 apg; the real catalyst for his rise into the lottery.

10. Seattle Supersonics -- Another team missing someone to run in the big man position. Radmanovic, Lewis, Allen and Ridnour are great players but often leave Danny Fortson behind on offence. That’s the reason why the team is so interested in European product Andrew Chen. The 7’1” 22 year old plays centre for the European team Moscow and did very well in his last season as he posted averages on 13 ppg and 7 rpg. It wasn’t too shabby for someone who found it hard to break into the rotation just two years ago. Chen has taken big steps to improve his game and that’s included increasing his shooting range and ball handling skills. The Sonics are also very interested in the big man with a soft touch thanks to his endurance and ability to run and run and run. A perfect fit for Seattle.

11. Boston Celtics -- Cousin of the Clippers’ own Yaroslav Korolev, Soulis Korolev may find himself a home on an NBA roster. The Celtics have been reportedly impressed with the Russian forward’s workouts with the team and the lanky 6’9” player could fill in at PF and even at C at times for a weak Celtics’ frontcourt rotation. Celtics’ big man Al Jefferson should find it great to play with Soulis who plays a lot from the perimeter for a big man. He is blessed with great leaping ability and like his cousin- a decent shot. Boston may find this man a good pick up and Raef Lafrentz can help tutor the young player. And along with teenage sensations Gerald Green and Al Jefferson; the Celtics might be seeing the star trio of the future.

12. Orlando Magic -- Another team thin in its frontcourt. Orlando should be able to add Mats Zubov to the mix and replace Bo Outlaw with the rookie in the near future. Zubov is no stranger to competition as he started playing pro at the age of 16 in Croatia. Zubov is wise for his age and rebounds the ball well. His physical play has often gotten him in trouble though but passionate players are hard to come by in the NBA. Standing at 6’9”, he is also reliable inside on offence as much as he is on defense. He should help Orlando’s struggling frontcourt and young Dwight Howard who is currently their starting centre.

13. Sacramento Kings -- The Kings desperately need a change. Possibly an infusion of youth? Reshawn Tyson hasn’t slipped at all but he hasn’t risen too far. For a player who didn’t even finish his only workout of the Summer, he is pushing his luck to be picked in the lottery. It’s true that he is talented and no doubt about that; as the nation saw in the NCAA Finals. However, his fiery temper, ego and sometimes lack of defensive intensity may be his down fall and is a worrying issue for prospective GMs. Tyson’s legal issues will get in the way before he steps onto the court and any team that picks him is taking a big gamble. If the Knicks don’t pick him and bring him home, expect the Kings to take a random roll of the dice to get him. With Tyson either starting or backing up Bonzi Wells, the Kings should return to the playoffs.

14. Phoenix Suns -- Phoenix don’t need much fine tuning as they were just unlucky not to make the playoffs. With Amare Stoudamire back in form next season, expect them to be at the top of their game. But the Suns can always improve their depth and by drafting home town kid Kenneth Cowell out of Arizona, they are on track to that aim. Not to mention, the Suns would have a home crowd favorite in the 6’8” small forward. Cowell has a smooth jumper and also crashes the boards well for his size. Most importantly, he runs. Another player that would fit right into the Suns’ game plan.

Other Players You Might See In The Lottery

-- Alton Murray Georgia’s star SG is too small to play SG in the NBA at 6’3” but his quickness, speed and scoring prowess are not to be underestimated. Was fearless in the NBA Pre-draft camp where he averaged 19 ppg but had a very disappointing assist to turnover ratio.

-- Ivan Lingren Another European making the jump. He’s a phenom on defense but struggles on offence. His ability to handle the ball has also been questioned but is still a great team player.

-- Igor Fedyk He’s on the outside looking in. He was inconsistent for workouts and during the camp and is more of a late first round pick but he has shown flashes of brilliance. A 6’9” SF who has shown to be able to play the point, his handles and quickness sets him apart from other players. Unfortunately, that’s all he has and his shot is pretty bad.

Chapter 27

Sit and Mark watched the game intently as it played out on the small screen in front of them. With beers in hand, the two cheered loudly as Kobe Bryant sunk a deep trey as time expired. The Lakers stayed ahead of the Pistons by 2 points with the fourth quarter just under way.
“I’m back!” yelled a voice at the front door.
Flo ran and opened the door for Marquis; a friend of Flo’s from Lithuania.
“Marquis,” Flo gasped, “Come in quickly, the game is getting exciting!”
Marquis and Flo joined Sit and Mark in front of the TV just in time to see Rip Hamilton come off a screen and spot up for a jumper.
“That’s in baby!” Mark called out, “Suck on that Sit!”
Sit hit Mark on the back of the head and then pushed him to the ground. Mark just lay on the ground rolling around and laughing. Flo and Marquis just sat back and laughed at the Wolves head coach.
“So what’s the story of the game so far?” Marquis asked as he opened a beer of his own.
Flo waited for the commentator to announce a time out and the game went into an ad break, “The Lakers were winning by about 12 or 13 but the pistons fought back after halftime and now they are tied as you can see. Great game.”
Sit butted in, “And my man Kobe has 28 points!”
Flo laughed, “He also has 8 boards and 9 assists.”
“Damn, good game by Kobe,” Marquis was impressed.
“First game he’s been the leader during the playoffs actually.”
Marquis, Flo and Sit looked around and saw Andrew Watson and Srbija.
“Kobe’s been averaging just 25 points a game this playoffs so it’s good that he’s stepping up against the Pistons this series,” Watson told them all before he sat down in front of the TV and grabbed a beer out of the esky.
Srbija preferred to stand, “Man, someone should get a bigger TV next time!”
Marquis sipped a bit of his drink and noticved that Mark wasn’t moving, “Is that dude ok?”
Everyone laughed and Srbija answered, “He’s an alco. Don’t worry about him.”
The ad break finished and the game was back on.

The Lakers and Pistons kept it close by trading baskets for the next few minutes. Even without Chauncey Billups on the floor, LA just couldn’t find a way to beat the Pistons.
Kobe shouted out to Odom who was cutting down near the baseline, “Get open!”
He looked up at the shot clock and it displayed 7, someone needed to get open.
Lamar then changed direction quickly and pushed of his left foot and darted to his right and towards the sideline. Kobe spotted him and passed the ball.
“No!” Kobe then cursed loudly.
Odom was on the floor and hit his fist against the hardwood. The ball was out of bounds.
“What was that?” Kobe angrily scorned Odom who had picked himself off the floor.
“Man…”
Kobe cut Odom off and glared at him before getting back down the court quickly. Things got worse as Kwame Brown let Lindsay Hunter seemingly walk into the paint and score. It was getting out of hand as Bryant shouted and tapped Kwame on the back of his head.
“Do you have a brain man?” Kobe furiously taunted his team mate, “Why did you let him walk in?”
Phil Jackson shook his head and signalled for a time out. The players formed a huddle at their bench and Kobe took a seat. He sat down and cursed again before throwing his bottle in front of him.
“Kobe,” Phil announced, “You’re off until you learn to control your temper.”

Sit threw his arms in the air when Kobe didn’t return onto the court.
“Man, what’s Phil thinking?” Sit protested.
Jing walked into the room, “It’s because Kobe sucks.”
“No he doesn’t!” Sit threw the remote control at him.
The glass cabinet door was hit by the remote and it shattered near Jing.
“What was that for?” Jing watched his step.
Sit started to watch the game again and ignored Jing who had sat down near Mark. Mark was still asleep on the carpet and mumbling in his slumber.
“Lamar Odom scores the two point bucket,” the commentator announced.
Odom gave Kwame a high five as the two players ran back down to start playing defence, “The Lakers are behind by just 1 with a handful of minutes left!”
“You think Kobe will be back on?” Flo asked Watson.
Watson shrugged, “I don’t know, what you think?”
Marquis looked clueless, “What?”

Rasheed Wallace had just hit a fade away over Kwame’s outstretched arms to the roar of the Place crowd. The scoreboard showed there were only 37 seconds left in the game. The Lakers were winning 99-97. Smush Parker took the ball and passed it to Lamar. Lamar dribbled the ball up past the Lakers bench where Kobe was seated. Bryant had a towel wrapped around his head. He watched on then suddenly put both his hands on the top of his head and grimaced.
“No,” he muttered under his breath.
Odom had lost the ball and Prince was on the fast break. Prince dunked the ball hard and the clock stopped at 29 seconds. Smush got the ball again and passed it to Odom. This time the Lakers forward made no mistake and protected the ball. His team mates scrambled on offence to set up a play and Chris Mihm suddenly found himself open under the hoop. Odom whipped a pass in and Mihm went up for the shot.
“Come on!” Phil Jackson yelled out and threw his arms in the air.
Ben Wallace grabbed the rebound and called a timeout. The Pistons took it quickly as there were only 7 ticks left on the clock. The players set up on the court quickly for the last play of the game.
“No shot!” called out Phil Jackson to his players.
The Lakers bench was on its feet but Kobe wasn’t. Kobe had been told by Phil that he was to stay stuck on the pine for the rest of the game.
Rip Hamilton was on the opposite side of the court and signalled for a screen. The two Wallaces stepped in Devean George’s way and set a double screen. Rip got open and ran to the top of the key. Prince threw the ball to his running team mate who was now wide open. With 3 seconds left, Rip let the ball go and it sailed right through the middle of the hoop.
“Too good!” someone screamed out.
Rip Hamilton had his shooting hand in the air and skipped backwards as his team mates hugged him. There was only 1.9 seconds left in the game and the Lakers used their final time out.
“We’re going for the win,” Jackson said.
Jackson looked towards Kobe and Bryant thought he was finally going back into the game, “Sasha, get in there.”
Kobe shook his head and hid beneath his towel as Sasha excitedly got out of his seat.
“Odom, you’re the decoy,” Phil said.
“What?”
Phil repeated, “You’re going to be double teamed, you are going to be the decoy and hit Sasha with the pass. He’s going to go for a three.”
Odom wasn’t impressed, “I’m not down with that coach. He’s only a rookie.”
Sasha looked at Odom, “I’m not a rookie.”
Odom sat down next to Bryant, “I ain’t going back in unless I’m shooting.”
Phil pointed at George, “Then you will be going in then.”

Sit was going crazy when he saw who was going onto the court for the Lakers, “No Kobe. No Lamar. What’s going on here?”
Everyone was silent as the game was about to be restarted. The players on the screen kept running around the court, trying to get open. Hard cuts towards the hoop and the ball still failed to get anybody free for a shot. Then George hastily threw the pass into Mihm. George took a step in and got the ball back quickly before throwing it to the other side of the court to an open Vujacic.
“He scores!” Sit shouted.
Vujacic had nailed the shot on the buzzer, the final second of the game seemed like 10.
“Holy cow!” Flo was jumping up and down.
Everyone in the room was cheering as Vujacic was celebrating with his team mates in Detroit. Kobe Bryant and Lamar Odom were seen walking with their heads down towards the team changing room. The other Lakers were now carrying the skinny Vujacic on their shoulders.
“Lakers win Game 1 baby!” Sit was now shaking up his beer, “We going for the win!”
Mark woke up dude to the noise and tried to open his eyes, “Man, what’s going on?”
No one took notice of Mark who then got up and tried to leave the room.
“Drinks on me!” Jing shouted before someone’s high pitched yelp made everyone be quiet.
It was Mark Moore, “Ouch, my foot!”

- - -

Reshawn Tyson and Alex Sotirov sat at the table negotiating with Detective Vince Thompson.
“My client has a busy schedule and with all due respect, he has medical papers to prove he was in an unstable state of mind on the day of the incident,” Sotirov explained to Thompson, “I believe that you should drop all charges.”
Thompson didn’t seem to hear what he said, “Tyson is going to be charged with a few counts of assault. Nothing you can do about it apart from maybe paying for the damages of the things he damaged.”
Sotirov took out his cheque book, “How much?”
Thompson wagged his finger in his face, “Even if you pay, he still faces charges of resisting arrest.”
“Stop playing with us man.”
“That’s what I’m here for,” Thompson laughed.
Sotirov got up and pointed at Thompson, “We will see you in court.”

Kobe Bryant, Lamar Odom and Phil Jackson were having a bit of a talk after their final training before Game 2.
“Look Kobe, I can do without your attitude problem,” Phil lectured them, “Lamar, it wasn’t appropriate to throw a hissy-fit. You’re my two best players and I need both of you on the floor to play well.”
Bryant and Odom were still frowning.
“It’s been a long road and I just want to finish this series tonight,” Jackson begged them, “We’re close to proving everyone wrong. We are so close to winning that title; I know you two want it too. I beg you to play good basketball tomorrow night. I will start the two of you but if anything goes wrong, you’re both off.”
And with that, Phil Jackson walked away from the duo and left the training centre. Bryant and Odom would dwell on what was said to them.

- - -

It was just like their loss against the Spurs; the Staples Centre was buzzing and Kobe Bryant was on the bench waving his arms in the air.
“That’s what I’m talking about!”
Jack Nicholson was next to him, “Kobe, this is great.”
Kobe was a bit confused, “I thought you didn’t like me dawg.”
Nicholson smiled, “I’m a fan now. Never too late.”
“Shouldn’t you be talking to the Pistons?” Kobe pointed at Nicholson’s usual seat behind the visitor’s bench.
“I don’t want my head ripped off by Ben.”
Kobe and Nicholson then cheered louder for the Lakers as Aaron McKie scored a three to put LA ahead for good.
“We’ve won baby!” Kobe said to Lamar as the two gave each other high fives.
The crowd was calling for Kobe to get back onto the court but the game was done. With the Lakers up 104-82, it was hard to think that they needed Kobe on the court anymore. As time winded down, the Lakers ended up winning 105-87. Confetti rained from the ceiling after the buzzer sounded. The Pistons filed towards the Lakers bench and shook their opponent’s hands. It was a blow out tonight and after the Pistons had finished congratulating the Lakers, Kobe hugged Phil.
“I knew you had it in you son,” Phil whispered to Kobe.
Kobe was beaming, “I owe you so much coach. Thanks for saving me.”
Phil then patted Kobe on the shoulder, “You are truly great, I’m glad that you have matured so much.”
Kobe then turned around and jumped onto the scorer’s table and waved his arms in the air. The fans were cheering ‘MVP’ over and over again. Bryant had played a truly great game as he finished with 38 points, 9 rebounds and 11 assists. Odom had joined Kobe on top of the scorer’s table and the two happily waved to their adoring fans. Odom was no slouch either as he put in a huge 18 points, 17 rebound and 5 assist performance.
“Your championship winning Los Angeles Lakers!” the PA man called into the system.
His voice blasted all over the Staples Centre and the fans and players were having a ball. It was a while before the trophy presentation was undertaken. Each Laker had their name called out and Kobe was awarded Finals MVP. Then David Stern came onto mid court and presented the Lakers with the Larry O’Brien trophy. It was a moment Kobe Bryant would never forget.
“The 2006 NBA Champions,” the PA man announced, “Your Los Angeles Lakers!”

Hey Sit,

What's happened to your Live 07 Dynasty? I hope it's not completely closed, that was looking so good. And are you going to continue this one or is this ending?

Don't kill your dynasties, they rule!!!

Hey fellas, I will finish this. Then I guess it will all be done. After all the shit with editing my posts and deleting them and then me getting blamed for it just sucks out the motivation to make anythnig anymore. In fact, the lack of people actually believing anything I said really has made me make my mind up.

Once I finish this dynasty here, I'm not going to be on here as much as usual.

But I will occasionally pop in and read some of the 07 dyansties. (Y)

Don't end this! Please! I have been following this on and off since it started, and this is my favorite dynasty! PLEASE write part 2, or at the very least finish Part 1.

I am begging you. You make the best dynasties here. The Lakers are one of my least favorite teams and I was rooting for them in your 2005 dynasty. You just HAVE to finish this.
