i try not to give the ball too much to kobe... but its harder to win with him jacking up shots instead of Kwame dominating inside!

During the season:

Kobe makes 12.2 shots out of 23.8 shots per game
Kwame makes 10.5 Shots out of 16.4 shots per game
Lamar makes 6.6 shots out of 13.5 shots per game
Brian Grant makes 4.6 shots out of 8.4 shots per game
Karl makes 4.3 shots out of 10.4 shots per game

ok.. i porved myself wong in doing that.. maybe kobe does shoot too much!

check out the free throws though! 6.5/8.4 free throws per game.... for kober. not good enough to dominate!

LAKER SWEEP SPURS

SAS: 23 – 24 – 24 – 29 – 100

16-13 Los Angeles Lakers sweep series against 22-7 San Antonio Spurs 3-0

Los Angeles Lakers into the second round with 22 second half points

Los Angeles – Kobe Bryant has been sidelined for 6 weeks with a bone spur in his right ankle. No one knew this except for the coach and Lakers management. When Bryant didn’t turn up for his routine of pre game shooting, security knew there was a problem.

One guard said, “Kobe’s been here all the time hours before the game and today he never showed (up).” Bryant didn’t show up until half an hour before tip off. He was wearing street clothes, on crutches and was helped to a seat behind the Lakers bench. He was replaced by Eddie Robinson; a late free agent signing, in the starting line up.

In the previous game, Bryant shook off an initial suspected right ankle injury to score a NBA record 70 playoff points. His heroics were described by Charles Barkley as, “10% Willis Reed and 100% Kobe Bryant with no Michael Jordan. The man was injured but still took over the game by himself and he’s established himself as a legend tonight! We never have to refer to him as the next Michael again. He’s Kobe Bryant.” However, his heroics came at a cost and it is more than likely that Bryant is out for the rest of the season.

“This is bad news for me,” Bryant said, “It looks like the season had a huge toll on my body. When I came back on I never thought that I’d aggravate (right leg) it any further.”

The Lakers didn’t need their star guard to finish the Spurs off though. In a game which featured only one dunk before the final 3 minutes of the game, the Lakers were able to win with their home court advantage and bench players. The game was buzzing but the crowd never got as loud as the Spurs’ crowd did in the first two games of their series.

“It’s never easy to get loud as the people do at Arco (King’s Arena),” Rudy T said, “But I know that the Staples Centre can get louder than the San Antonio crowd do.” And that’s what happened at the end of the game which lifted the home team to the win. The crowd got to their feet as the Lakers held onto the win, cheering the team on their feet for the last two minutes of the game.

“Great atmosphere at the end,” actor Jack Nicholson said, “Haven’t seen it here in a while!” Lakers third year guard Kareem Rush agreed, “The people in the stands really had us going, without Kobe it was harder to win but the cheers pulled us over them (Spurs).”

Lamar Odom led the Lakers with 22 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 blocks in a game high 41 minutes. Chucky Atkins contributed 20 points, 8 assists and Kareem Rush scored all of his points in the second half finishing on 22. The latter two players both came off the bench to lead the Lakers to victory.

Tim Duncan tried his best to stop the red hot Lakers with a dominant display of offence and defence but was limited to 35 minutes after picking up 2 quick fouls at the start of the game. “Same old, same old,” Duncan said, “This series’ officiating has been horrible.” Duncan scored 22 points as he was flanked by Brent Barry’s 22 points. Tony Parker and Manu Ginobli had 16 apiece.

“It was a horrible series in terms of shooting,” San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich said, “Our guard rotation just couldn’t hit a shot.” Brent Barry, Bruce Bowen, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobli combined to shoot 84/216 from the field throughout the series which equates to 38%.

The Spurs and Lakers kept the scores close for the whole game. At halftime, the Lakers were trailing the Spurs 47-43 but after the break, San Antonio stretched their advantage to double digits. Kareem Rush then came off the bench to score 10 third quarter points and midway through the quarter; Chucky Atkins scored back to back threes to put the Lakers back into the game.

The fourth quarter was controlled by the Lakers as they dictated the tempo en route to the win. The Spurs led for most of the way until Lamar Odom put LA ahead with a three pointer with 3:56 left in the fourth quarter from the left wing. With 3:14 left, the Lakers already with 5 team fouls let former Laker Robert Horry go to the line. He missed his first free throw of the postseason and the Spurs only got within one point with the score at 94-95.

Rush turned over the ball with 2:28 left but Odom stole it back on the inbounds. After setting up a play designed for Bryant, Rush used the opportunity to sink a floater in the lane at 1:44 and the Lakers went up 94-97. Duncan then dunked with ease on a non-existent Lakers backline. Kwame Brown had the game’s play of the game with a huge windmill jam which showed off his athleticism with 1:19 remaining. Kareem Rush hit a jumper just inside the arc with 1:00 left to put LA up 96-102. Rush was then fouled and made 1 of his 2 free throw attempts. With 33.6 seconds left, Manu Ginobli gave San Antonio a chance to catch up with his mid range jumper but Chcuky Atkins denied them any chance of a comeback by hitting both of his crucial free throws to put Los Angeles up 98-104. Odom added one free throw with 23.8 seconds and Duncan scored 10 seconds later with a hook shot as a consolation basket as his Spurs were knocked out of the series. Kareem Rush then scored a three pointer at the buzzer, finishing with 12 fourth quarter points and raised his finger at Kobe Bryant on the sideline and mouthed, “This one’s for you.”

After the game Rush said, “We want to win the ring for Kobe. We owe him for getting us here!”

NOTES

When asked how the team could improve in preparation for the second round, Rudy T replied, “Free throw shooting.” The Lakers shot 15/35 from the stripe… SG Eddie Robinson finished his playoff debut with 2 points and 2 rebounds in 12 minutes… F Caron Butler struggled again with 5 points in 25 minutes… F Bruce Bowen shot 3/20 from the field for the Spurs… The Lakers advance to the second round to play the number 3 seed Minnesota Timberwolves who swept the Dallas Mavericks yesterday…

O’NEAL’S DEPARTURE: INSTANT IMPACT?

SG Kobe Bryant, LAL won both most valuable player and defensive player of the year for the 2004-05 NBA season.

Los Angeles, May 8 – Prior to this season, NBA critics were divided into two groups. Kobe haters and Kobe lovers. In the end, Kobe lovers won and the haters will need to take a backseat as Kobe Bryant proved his biggest critics wrong with the most impressive individual seasons of the new century.

Bryant led his Lakers to a 16-13 record but it is often forgotten that the Lakers once had a losing record and were led to a seven game winning streak by Bryant which placed them into the postseason. Bryant injured in Game 2 of the first round against San Antonio scored a NBA record 70 playoffs points which is his career high in scoring.

Bryant’s statistics were unbelievable as he averaged 31.8 ppg, 8.5 apg, 7.1 rpg, and 3.64 spg. He ranks first in the NBA in scoring (ppg), assists (apg), steals (spg), field goals made, field goal attempts, free throws made and free throw attempts. He is also first amongst guards in rebounds (rpg). He shot 51% from the field and played a team high 40 minutes per game and started all but one game. Minnesota’s Kevin Garnett commented on Bryant after his team’s first round win, “Kobe is the best player in the league today. I have never seen a guard cover so much ground like he does. Not since Michael Jordan.”

Although Bryant was the sure bet to win the MVP award, his performance in the first two games of the Lakers-Spurs series convinced voters that he was the one they’d choose even though it was the most valuable player award based on the season. Bryant averaged a playoff record high 55 ppg in 2 games. He has also added 7.5 rpg, 11.5 apg, 9.0 spg to his statline. “Bryant is the best player in our league today, his stats show it. Even if he didn’t make the playoffs with LA, he still would have won that award,” Detroit Pistons coach Larry Brown exclaimed.

The defensive player of the year award also went to Bryant which was a big surprise to many around the league. Ron Artest of the Indiana Pacers and Ben Wallace of Detorit, the past three winners of the award were angry at the announcement. Artest who was second behind Bryant in steals said, “Kobe doesn’t deserve the award. He doesn’t have what I and Ben (Wallace) got. He only gets steals because of his teams’ fast pace game.”

Wally Szczerbiak of the Minnesota Timberwolves won the most improved player of the year award. During 2003-04, Wally was limited to a quarter of a season due to an injury. He came back this season to help the Timberwolves to a 21-8 record with averages of 21.1 ppg, 7 rpg and shot efficiently with shooting averages of 47% from the field, 30% from the arc and 87.7% from the charity stripe. Wolves coach Flip Saunders said, “Wally’s return has us looking like a championship calibre team!”

Emeka Okafor of the NBA’s last place team Chalotte Bobcats won the GotMilk? Rookie of the Year award. Despite the losing record of 6-23, Okafor showed poise throughout the season and supported his team mates for the whole season. He played and started every game of the NBA season and averaged 14 ppg, 11.4 rpg, 1.86 bpg and 1.28 spg in 42.0 mpg. “Emeka’s a special player. His defence is comparable to Ben Wallace but also has a wide array of offensive moves. This guy’s a winner,” His coach Ernie Bickerstaff said.

The Lakers’ Brain Grant won the third league award in his team’s name. Grant had a successful season as he averaged a double double off the bench with 10.1 ppg, 10.9 ppg, 3 apg and shot on 55% shooting. He averaged 27.1 mpg as he played in every game of the season.

Rick Adelman led his Kings to the best record in the league: 23-6 (.736%). The Kings had a 11-4 record at home but even more impressive, they played better away from Arco Arena going 12-2 on foreign courts. “It’s been successful this year for us,” Adelman said, “We hope we can do good in the playoffs.”

MVP Voting

Rank. Name, Team (Vote)
1. Kobe Bryant, LAL (90.9 %)
2. Antoine Walker, ATL (2.5 %)
3. Kevin Garnett, MIN (2.4 %)
4. Shaquille O’Neal, MIA (2.3 %)
5. Elton Brand, LAC (1.9 %)

Bryant can add MVP, Defensive Player of the Year, All-NBA first and Defensive first team honours to his resume now. The only player to be on both first teams completes Bryant’s season that is hampered by a right ankle injury. It has ruled him out of the Lakers’ playoffs but it has been a successful season nonetheless. Former team mate Shaquille O’Neal joins Bryant on the first team with Knicks’ guard Stephon Marbury, Suns’ forward Shawn Marion and Hawks’ forward Antoine Walker.

Bryant also headlines the All-Defensive first team joined by All-NBA Second team member Kevin Garnett of Minnesota, Pistons’ centre Ben Wallace, Bobcats’ point guard Brevin Knight and Dallas’ swingman Josh Howard. Philadelphia’s Allen Iverson, Cleveland’s LeBron James, Indiana’s Ron Artest and Minnesota’s Kevin Garnetts all made two teams each.

Charlotte’s Emeka Okafor, Orlando’s Dwight Howard, Philadelphia’s Andre Iguodala are part of the GotMilk? Rookie First Team. The Chicago Bulls have three rookies in the All-Rookie teams with Ben Gordon and Andres Nocioni in the First team and Luol Deng in the Second team.

FIRST ROUND ROUNDUP

1 Sacramento 8 Memphis 3-2

Sacramento escaped a scare from the Memphis Grizzlies. With Memphis up 2-1 in Game 4, a Webber three point play on the buzzer saved the team to send the game in OT. Bobby Jackson came off the bench to score 36 points and had back to back three pointers in the final 15 seconds of the game to steal a 106-103 win sending the series back to ARCO Arena.

Player of the Series: Chris Webber 21 ppg, 11 rpg, 5 apg, 2.2 spg, 1 bpg, 54% FG

4 Denver 5 Houston 1-3

The Rockets were just too good. All five of their starters are averaging double digits and after the first game, an 88-84 win over Denver, the Rockets had two blow out wins to finish the series on their home court. Denver did have a consolation win in Game 3 as Earl Boykins scored a career high 35 points in a 112-71 win.

Player of the Series: Carmelo Anthony 28 ppg, 10 rpg, 3 spg

3 Minnesota 6 Dallas 3-0

Kevin Garnett powered the Wolves to one of four first round series sweeps. The games weren’t even close with winning margins of 28, 11 and 33. Dirk Nowitzki was limited to 19 ppg by Garnett and that is the reason why the Mavericks didn’t stand a chance!

Player of the Series: Kevin Garnett 26.3 ppg, 11 rpg, 4 apg, 1.67 spg, 1.67 bpg

2 San Antonio 7 Los Angeles 0-3

The mighty Lakers may have trouble later in the playoffs. Losing Kobe Bryant was a huge loss but the bench was able to step it up in their 108-100 win in Game Three. Lamar Odom is finally playing well.

Player of the Series: Kobe Bryant 55 ppg, 11.5 apg, 7.5 rpg, 9 spg

1 Boston 8 Cleveland 3-1

The Celtics won easily dropping Game 3 to an inspired LeBron James who had 33, 12, 8 and 5 steals in a 108-90 win. However, Paul Pierce was too good for the Cavs.

Player of the Series: Paul Pierce 28 ppg, 5 rpg, 8 apg, 2.25 spg, 57% FG, 50 % 3PT

4 Detroit 5 Atlanta 3-0

The Detorit Pistons played their hard suffocating defence against the Hawks. ‘Defence wins rings,’ guard Rip Hamilton said after their Game 3 triumph. The Hawks scored 76.5 ppg for the whole series.

Player of the Series: Rip Hamilton 20 ppg, 6 rpg, 6 apg, 47% FG

3 Miami 6 Orlando 1-3

The Orlando Magic denied Shaq an entry to the second round. A Shaq tip in at the buzzer which looked like it had sent the game into overtime was denied by the match referees and that call seemed to have finished the series for the Heat. It did finish the game at least with Game 3’s score being 106-108.

Player of the Series: Shaquille O’Neal 25 ppg, 16 rpg, 2.25 bpg

2 Indiana 7 Washington 0-3

The Pacers never got close to the Wizards who used their magic in their three top scorers. Antawn Jamison, Larry Hughes and Gilbert Arenas are all averaging at least 20 ppg.

Player of the Series: Gilbert Arenas 22.3 ppg, 5.3 rpg, 6.7 apg, 2 spg

Second Round:
1 Sacramento Kings vs. 5 Houston Rockets
3 Minnesota Timberwolves vs. 7 Los Angeles Lakers

1 Boston Celtics vs. 4 Dtroit Pistons
6 Orlando Magic vs. 7 Washington Wizards

Predictions:

Kings beat Rockets 3-1: Right now, the Kings have the second deepest roster in the league. Next to Minnesota that is.
Wolves beat Lakers 3-2: Without Kobe the Lakers will struggle. Against Minnesota they will struggle even more.
Celtics beat Pistons 3-2: The Pistons will take the Celtics to five games. This is the series not to miss!
Wizards beat Magic 3-0: The Wizards should be able to sweep the Magic easily in this matchup!

KWAME BROWN’S 22, 20 OUSTS T-WOLVES

LAL: 26 – 36 – 34 – 28 – 124
MIN: 28 – 24 – 35 – 25 – 112

16-13 Los Angeles Lakers lead series against 21-8 Minnesota Timberwolves 1-0

ABOVE: Kwame Brown (5) intercepts Trenton Hassell’s pass to swing the game’s momentum in the Laker’s favour

Minnesota – Kevin Garnett rejected Kwame Brown’s hook shot. The Timberwolves raced down the court as the NBA’s most valuable player from last season gathered up the ball for a layup. It looked like another fairy tale start to the second round for Minnesota until the ball was sent flying into the stands.

Kwame Brown scored 22 points, grabbed 20 rebounds and added 3 assists, 3 blocks and a steal to lead the Lakers to a Game 1 victory in the NBA semi finals. He was also crucial to the team in the final minutes of the game as he blocked Kevin Garnett’s layup, scored on the other end and then stole a Wolves inbounds pass to swing the Lakers into cruise control for the final three minutes of the game.

“That (block) and then the steal really turned the game around and allowed the Lakers to hold on tightly to the win. They didn’t let us score after that,” former Laker Mark Madsen said.

Brown led six other players in double figures. Lamar Odom had 27 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists and 2 steals. Kareem Rush and Chucky Atkins scored 16 apiece, Caron Butler 15, Karl Malone 11 and Juan Dixon 10. Coach Rudy Tomjanovich was ecstatic about the superiority of his team’s performance. “Even without Kobe, we are really playing well as one unit! The offence has never flowed so well.”

Kevin Garnett tried his best to counter the Laker’s fast paced offence as he dominated with 20 points, 12 rebounds and blocked 5 shots. Sam Cassell added 26 points but struggled to find his rhythm missing 7 of his 9 three point attempts as he became a non-factor; a huge contrast to his 38 points against the same team three weeks ago.

“In the end the Lakers were just too good. I hope our team can regroup and take out game 2,” Garnett said, “We’ve underestimated the Lakers. We thought they’d be easy without Kobe Bryant.” Michael Olowokandi who grabbed 14 rebounds had a similar story, “The Lakers frontcourt is tougher to beat than many think. Kobe takes all of the focus and their frontcourt is underrated, they’ve all got a bit of skill.”

The Lakers’ Juan Dixon had only praise for the Wolves’ Kevin Garnett, “You can see why he is the best player in the NBA. He just walked over our team by himself but his team mates couldn’t push themselves to the win.”

Kobe Bryant who was courtside didn’t object to Garnett being referenced as the best NBA player, “Kevin is a tremendous talent. I know I’m not as good as him and I have to admit that.”

NOTES

The Lakers doubled the Wolves in their assists count 30 to 14… The Heat’s Shaquille O’Neal watched the game on TNT in Miami and was asked who he was rooting for, “I’m never ever going to go for guy (Kobe Bryant) so I will have to go with KG’s team”… Lamar Odom scored 17 points in a dominant third quarter performance… The Timberwolves blocked 10 shots… Kareem Rush’s dunk in the middle of the second quarter caused an angry fan to throw a bottle at him, which hit him in the eye. Rush left the court and had two stiches just above his left eye. The fan was arrested by police…

CRIPPLED LAKE SHOW RULE FOURTH QUARTER

LAL: 16 – 25 – 25 – 39 – 105
MIN: 24 – 27 – 27 – 18 – 96

16-13 Los Angeles Lakers lead series against 21-8 Minnesota Timberwolves 2-0

Image

ABOVE: Lakers’ Kareem Rush (21) dunks over Kevin Garnett (21) and also passed two other Wolves defenders

Minnesota The Los Angeles Lakers had an amazing fourth quarter comeback last night to take a two game lead into Game 3 of the NBA semi finals. The main factor which made this comeback less probable was the fact that the Lakers’ Kobe Bryant was already out with injury whilst Lamar Odom and Kwame Brown both made exits out of the game with arm injuries.

The game was fought hard by both sides as three near skirmishes broke out. Fists were flying in the first quarter just 3 minutes into the game. Kevin Garnett who had scored in the paint retaliated to Odom’s hard foul by punching him in the shoulder. Odom struck back but slipped on the slippery floor and landed on his left wrist. Caron Butler tried to join in by jumping on Garnett’s back and wrapping his arm around his neck, as players from both sides rushed on court to separate the two. Odom was helped off the floor by the Lakers’ trainers and both Butler and Garnett were booked for technical fouls.

Another close fight broke out on the Lakers bench when Rudy Tomjanovic and shooting guard Eddie Robinson were arguing. Robinson who was signed by the Lakers late in the season complained about playing time. He was seen throwing his towel at the coach during a time out after being refused to be let back onto the court. Luke Walton then stood up for his coach and stood in Robinson’s way back to the bench. The two players exchanged inaudible words and Robinson was seen raising his fists before the two were separated. Eddie Robinson then left the game early.

In the middle of a Lakers scoring run, Kwame Brown was tripped on his way to the basket by Wolves’ centre Michael Olowokandi. While Brown was lying in agony, Kareem Rush confronted the 7’0” centre. Kandi shoved Rush and sent the 6’6” guard onto the floor as officials broke the two players up. However, the Minnesota crowd cheered as the officials didn’t award any extra free throws for the unsportsmanlike act and blamed Rush for making matter worse.

Tomjanovic talked about all three of the different occurrences. “When Caron Butler jumped onto Kevin’s back, I was very disappointed. There is never any reason for you to try and start a fight especially when your teammate has already tried to and hurt himself more than the other person. In regards to Eddie, I think it might be the end of his career in this team. What really got to me was that Olowokandi didn’t get anything for that shove of Rush, that is just not fair at all!”

The Target centre crowd was in hysterics for most of the game as the Tinberwolves led from the start. They opened the game with a 14-0 run and maintained a steady lead until the final 2 minutes of the game.

Kevin Garnett was a monster once again for his team as he scored 18 first half points and finished the game on 26 points, 13 rebounds and 5 blocks. Unfortunately for the home side, Garnett was ineffective in the final period as he went scoreless in the final 8 minutes of the match. Wally Szczerbiak tried to help out for his team as he added 19 and 11 for the Timberwolves.

Kwame Brown scored 18 points, grabbed 13 rebounds in 27 minutes before heading for the change rooms with 7:43 left in the final quarter. Caron Butler impressed the Lakers as he had 19 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists and 2 steals to cover up Lamar Odom’s absence. Chucky Atkins added 24, 4 and 5 in a team high 42 minutes.

“Great team effort, especially how we finished as a team,” Caron Butler said, “We were missing three of our top guys but that didn’t stop us!”

The Wolves came out ready to fight and planned to try and build a sizeable lead. They did that and lead by as many as 22 in the second quarter however Chucky Atkins scored three straight triples to pull the Lake Show within 10 points at the end of the half. Atkins had scored 13 points in the second quarter and was the only player who shot well as the team shot 36% from the field in the first half.

Wally Szczerbiak squished the Lakers hope of a comeback in the third quarter as he made a four point play with 10:05 left in the third period. “That was huge,” Wally said, “It did great things for our team’s morale.” Wally went on to score 12 points in that quarter.

The Lakers were then able to make a steaming comeback as they scorched the Timberwolves with hot outside shooting. Rush, Dixon and Atkins hit six treys in the final quarter as Los Angeles outscored their opponents by 21 points. “We were just too hot,” Juan Dixon exclaimed.

The Lakers got within two points of the Wolves but couldn’t get any closer for two whole minutes as Karl Malone missed two easy opportunities and missed two shots right in front of the hoop with 1:55 and 1:37 remaining on the clock. Butler broke the losing trend with a jumper and tied the score at 96-all with 1:05 left.

The Lakers didn’t let the Wolves come back after that as Rush hit a trey with 55.8 left, then the Wolves watched Dixon and Malone share three shots at the charity stripe as the Lakers led 102-96 with 16 seconds reaming. Garnett missed a shot inside and Spreewell missed a long range jumper in the final minute and watched on as Caron Butler drilled a three point dagger at the buzzer.

Butler walked off the court with his shooting hand in the air as the Target Center crowd booed them off court. “It hurt to be booed after a win but I guess they are the opposition’s crowd!”

NOTES

The Lakers can close out the series at home in Game 3 in three nights… Both F Lamar Odom and F/C Kwame Brown have been cleared from serious injury… Karl Malone did not score a field goal as he missed all of his 7 shot attempts… Sam Cassell was held to 6/29 shooting and received hard cristicism from Wolves coach Flip Saunders, “He’s not Allen Iverson or Kobe Bryant. We don’t need him to jack up 30 shots and miss 20 of them!”…

AMAZING COMEBACKS: TAKE TWO

MIN: 26 – 29 – 29 – 16 – 100
LAL: 18 – 16 – 30 – 41 – 105

16-13 Los Angeles Lakers sweep series against 21-8 Minnesota Timberwolves 3-0

Image

ABOVE: Kevin Garnett (21) went to work fast as he swats Lamar Odom’s dunk

Los Angeles – Three nights after an amazing comeback win, the Lakers did it again in STAPLES Centre. The Lakers might have not played Juan Dixon enough as the pint sized guard played at the Shooting guard spot to trigger a Lakers’ comeback which caught their opponents by surprise.

Once again, Kevin Garnett dominated up until the fourth quarter already collecting 18 and 13 by the end of the first half. Garnett did not score in the whole final period as he watched his team crumble to the might of a surging Lakers squad.

Minnesota started the game perfectly and looked like they were going to force a Game 4 but the 6’3” product from Maryland scored 11 straight points in the first 5 minutes of the final period to bring the team back into the contest.

Juan Dixon came off the pine and scored on a coast to coast. He then hit an open three point basket, a floater in the lane over Sam Cassell then two reverse lay ups past Kevin Garnett in the paint. By that stage the Lakers were back in contention of the game only trailing by single digits.

It wasn’t until Kwame Brown’s windmill jam that put the Lakers in their first leading position of the game with 2:04 left. Two Atkins free throws put LA ahead 101-98 at 1:55 on the clock. The two teams battled it out with gritty defence as Garnett was the next scorer with a bank with 36.7 remaining. Kwame Brown defied gravity to hit a tough lay up over Garnett on the other end with 27.5 remaining. Kevin Garnett made a second mistake by missing an off balance mid range jumper allowing the Lakers’ hero Juan Dixon score on the fast break with 17.5 seconds left to wrap up the series 105-100.

“It was an exciting finish,” Juan Dixon told the press, “I didn’t know I could pull off what I did tonight. It has always been a dream to me and now it has come true!” The Lakers shot a percentage of 60% from the field in the final period which clinched a Western Conference Finals spot for the Lakers as they aim to make the NBA Finals for the fifth time in the last six years

Kwame Brown shook off a horrible offensive showing with 9 points on 4 for 13 shooting. He did make up for missing shots by pulling down 19 boards and dishing out 7 assists. Lamar Odom was spectacular with 27 points, 7 rebounds and 7 assists as Caron Butler added 15, 7 and 4.

Kevin Garnett dominated once again in his worst shooting performance of the series. But his average still yielded MVP like numbers as he scored 26 points, 14 rebounds and blocked 6 shots. Sam Cassell was once again held to 14 points by the swarming Laker defence. The Wolves relied on Spreewell and Szczerbiak to share the scoring with Garnett as the two scored 18 and 20 points respectively.

Flip Saunders was disappointed with the team’s performance. “We can play better than this. The lakers are playing well but we should have won… we had a 26 point lead for God’s sake!”

NOTES

Kobe Bryant was sitting courtside and gave a speech to the Lakers crowd as he received his MVP, Defensive player of the Year trophies… Brian Grant also received his award… The STAPLES crowd was energised by a Kareem Rush reverse dunk mid way through the game… Caron Butler made a few timely three pointers but Rush’s shot two steps out of the arc rattled in to send the crowd to its feet… The Timberwolves who were thought to have fixed their contract problems seem to be on the verge of a team break up as Cassell and Spreewell have announced their displeasure with the franchise…

SEMI FINALS RECAP

1. Sacramento Kings defeated the 5. Houston Rockets 3-1 despite Chris Webber getting injured. Houston did have a surprise win after Webber left the court holding his shoulder with 6.7 seconds remaining; Tyronn Lue hit a game winning three pointer. While he was celebrating he tripped over his shoelace and sustained an ankle injury which has also placed him into the Injured List.

7 Los Angeles Lakers defeated the 3. Minnesota Timberwolves 3-0 without Kobe Bryant. The NBA’s MVP commented on his team’s play, “The team is playing a great passing game and gets back on defence. We’ve got a chance for that ring with our true fighting spirit.” The Lakers won their last two games riding on fourth quarter comebacks.

4. Detroit Pistons defeated the 1. Boston Celtics with true hard nosed defence. The Pistons held Boston below 75 points in all three games as they swept the series. Gary Payton of the Celtics threw a tantrum in Game 3 after Paul Pierce missed a jump shot to give the Pistons a chance to win the game and clinch the series; which they did.

7. Washington Wizards defeated 6. Orlando Magic 3-1 as the Wizards dominated the series with great team work. All five starters are averaging double figures in scoring and destroyed the Magic with margins of double digits in all three of their wins.

CONFERENCE FINALS PREVIEWS

Western Conference Finals:

Number 1 seed Sacramento Kings went 23-6 and will take on the surprising 16-13 Los Angeles Lakers who have won 7 straight, 6 straight playoff games. Kobe Bryant the star guard of the League is out with an injury but his absence has only just motivated his teammates to play even harder.

The Lakers have ressurected the 80's playing style of NBA teams by averaging close to 110 ppg for the playoffs. All of their home games have sold out quickly and fans feel cheated that the Lakers have finished both series in Game 3 at home and didn't give fans a chance to watch them for a second game. However, long time rivals the Kings could change that as they are defeinately the best team in the league.

Vlade Divac will play against his former team and close friend Peja Stojakavic. And Chris Webber will be returning from injury.

The Lakers need to outgun the Kings in this series to win. Bobby Jackson, Mike Bibby will need to be contained and Lamar Odom will need to play big minutes. The odds are against LA... but they have been all year long so why stop now?

Eastern Conference Finals:

The Detorit Pistons takes their hard nosed defence to DC. Detroit has not allowed an of its opponents score over 85 points all playoffs and has limited them below 80 in all but two of their playoff games. Impressive?

Damn straight!

It will be the East's highest scoring team against the best defensive team in the League in this matchup. If the Wizards want to win this game, it will be tough as Detroit took over Boston easily without homecourt. With home court, they look unstoppable!

Rip Hamilton will prove very difficult to stop on defence and the two Wallaces will prove trouble in the paint when they are on defence. Detroit may win the championship again this year!

Word.

KINGS, LAKERS GET PHYSICAL

LAL: 17 – 22 – 18 – 26 – 83
SAC: 18 – 27 – 24 – 27 - 96

16-13 Los Angeles Lakers trail series against 23-6 Sacramento Kings 0-1

Image

ABOVE: The Officials didn’t call the play shown, out of bounds which led to the Lakers’ collapse

Sacramento – Shaquille O’Neal left town. Kobe Bryant is injured. The Lakers missed the dominance and the clutch basketball. But to Arco Arena’s surprise, the Lakers showed up to play a physical brand of basketball against their ‘rivals.’

The two teams used to be Western Conference powerhouses but San Antonio and Minnesota have since joined that elite club. Los Angeles beat both teams to make it this far into the playoffs and now face an even tougher team in the Kings who have everything.

Chris Webber who labelled the two teams’ rivalry to be officially dead had to bite his own words though as the Kobe-less Lakers took to the floor with hard defence and physical play which converted into many tense moments. One was midway through the second quarter when Mike Bibby dived for a rolling ball and was clearly over the line but the Referees just shrugged it off. Los Angeles stopped moving and stared as the Kings scored on a fast break. Coach Tomjanovic who complained about the call was given a technical foul for delay of game.

This was only the beginning. The Kings then went on a 8-0 spurt to increase their advantage to 14 points by halftime. During that 4 minute period of the Lakers going scoreless, Kwame Brown was called for two three second violations and a foul which clearly didn’t belong to him. Later on in the fourth quarter, an important Chucky Atkins’ three pointer was disallowed as the officials argued he shot after the shot clock sounded.

“The refereeing was horrible tonight. Garbage! It was just rubbish!” Lakers assistant Brian Shaw exclaimed. Violet Palmer who was on court tonight released a written statement, “We are confident of our calls tonight.”

When Coach Tomjanovich heard of the statement he said, “Oh- are they in for some surprises!” Kings coach Rick Aldeman was keeping his mouth shut on the issue though by replying, “No comment.”

Kwame Brown tried his best to emulate a Shaq night out with 27 points and 22 rebounds but his team mates didn’t support him too well. Karl Malone was the second best Laker with 14 and 7 off the bench. The Lakers just couldn’t dominate on offence and let Sacramento dictate their defence as the Kings scored all of their fourth quarter shots in the paint.

“The Lakers are a different team without Shaq,” Mike Bibby explains, “They just aren’t intimidating anymore.” Chris Webber chimed in, “Without Kobe, they can’t finish games either!”

Kobe Bryant was also in the midst of a heated battle with Kings fans. The injured guard was walking without crotches for the first time and stood up as he was announced. The Arco Arena crowd booed and threw things at his head. Bryant, in the heat of the moment spun around and lunged at the closest fan he could see. The guard was lucky his two bodyguards held him back from hitting the men and took him out of the stadium.

Brad Miller was the hero for the Kings as he recorded 30 and 17. Mike Bibby and Peja Stojakovic added 17 apiece.

The Kings took an early lead in the second quarter and held on to preserve the win as every call by the ref seemed not to go LA’s way. During the third quarter, the Lakers hit back to back threes to narrow the King’s lead to single digits. It happened again midway through the fourth quarter but both times led to bad calls being made sending the Lakers back to a double digit deficit.

“We were so close. All those threes went to waste,” Caron Butler disappointedly said.

Los Angeles did make an attempt to win Game 1 with 4 minutes remaining. Kwame Brown returned to the floor and the Lakers tried to outscore the Kings. After a Brown hook shot narrowed the gap to 6 points with 2:20 left, the Lakers went cold as Butler and Atkins both missed three point attempts. However, the game wasn’t sealed until Mike Bibby hit two threes in the final minute of the game. The latter shot was launched over three defenders in the left hand corner of the court.

The atmosphere was competitive and one fan summed it up, “Everyone was cheering for Sac-Town not because we knew we could win but because we wanted to win against our biggest rivals!”

NOTES

Bryant was fined $2000 for attempting to hit the fan… Kwame Brown had 17, 15 by half time… In the other Conference Final, the 15-14 Washington Wizards escaped a thriller in Motown as former Wizards guard Rip Hamilton missed an open layup at the buzzer. The 17-12 Detroit Pistons lost 89-87… Lakers coach Rudy Tomjanovich was rushed to hospital the night prior to Game 1 due to chest pains… The Lakers’ 7 game win streak was broken…

Great update, there's so many good dynasties here that I didn't know about like this one. Your writing skills are really good, good luck against the Kings. Can we have a Western Conference Finals like the one when they last met?
