Ernie Johnson:...and welcome back to TNT's coverage of the 2020 NBA Playoffs, I'm
Ernie Johnson and I hope you're enjoying the first half of Game 1 of the the Western Conference Semi-finals as the
Denver Nuggets host the
Los Angeles Lakers. As most of you know, I will be retiring after this season after 44 seasons of broadcasting. So, it is my delight to have with me in the Studio, The X, current General Manager of the Portland Trailblazers and former GM of the Denver Nuggets. Alongside him is long-time General Manager for the Los Angeles Lakers and shooting guard for the New Jersey Nets, Honor Glow. Please to have you gentleman in the studio today.
Honor Glow: It's our pleasure...well, as The X's former team seems to be manhandling my own, I guess it's more The X's pleasure!
The X: Ha!
Ernie Johnson: It all started when you drafted the shooting guard Wilkinson back in 2005. And, although they have a new starting line-up surrounding him nowadays, it all revolves around him. Can you tell us a little how you landed Kwesi?
The X: Ahhh,
Kwesi Wilkinson, 6'5", 206lbs- here's a guy who I wanted and got....he was a sensational SG which is just what my Nuggets' team needed....I looked him up when his rookie contract ended....made All-Star team once during my tenure with the Nuggets...
Honor Glow: I hate that fricken floating jumper of his. Kept our coaching staff up late at night!
The X: Ha!
Ernie Johnson: Speaking of anamolies, this series boasts the leagues smallest Point Guard match-up with Segei Hoyle giving up 3 inches to Jamie Sanderson. As both of them are little Nate Robinsons, this is really worth the price of admission!
Honor Glow: My Lakers are worth the price of admission alone...
The X: Ha!
Honor Glow: But I really think the key to the series is how we contain Jamie Sanderson wonder-sub,
Conrad Everett. Once the combo-guard hits the open floor, as we saw in the first half, there's not much you can do.
The X: Ahh,
Conrad Everett, 6'7", 206lbs, (21st pick of 2006 Draft by Phoenix) I acquired him via a trade a few years into his career....this athletic lefty reminded me of a young, Bobby Sura....athletic, good handles, combo guard, and fun to run with....a nice player to have on the bench....
Honor Glow: ...so we've noticed.
The X: Ha! ...Ha!
Ernie Johnson: Well, Honor Glow, I noticed in the first half that L.A. decided to start Rookie
Eisley at Center instead of Laker mainstay and All-Star great
Thomas Goldberg. Although, you're not part of the coaching staff, I was wondering about the strategy in this?
Honor Glow: Mainly, is that Eisley has something to prove still and can provide that youthful Energy against Denver's running game. With Tommie being in his 16th year in the league and receiving all the accollades of success, it's been harder and harder for him to keep his head in the game...in amongst other things.
The X: Kind of like you...minus the accollades.
Honor Glow: You know, I never liked you as a player...and if you don't shut that trap of yours, The X, Portland may have find a new GM as their current one is going to end up in the hospital!
The X: Ha!
Ernie Johnson: Okay, gentleman, too much love! The X, because of some previous playoff disappointments, current Nugget management had to bring in some playoff tested veterans in
Votwe Bagwell,
Ivan Carter, and
Abrahm Gabler, but pretty much, the team that you assembled back in the day, is still intact? Can you do a quick run-down back in memory lane and your thoughts? I'm pretty sure you still have quite a connect with these players....
The X: Ah yes, my small forward,
Caleb Chandler, 6'7", 216lbs, (20th pick of 2007 Draft by LA Clippers) - I acquired him via a trade with Miami in the Dwayn Wade deal I believe....Chandler was a typical Clippers' draft pick....super-talented offensive player who never lived up to his hype....was the same when he played with my Nuggets....
The X:
Cuba Quaid, 6'11", 264lbs, (11th pick of 2006 Draft by Denver) - he was a big man with good physical tools who after being a solid contributor eventually got re-signed based on his potential and became my starting center....
The X: PF-
Jon Wright(
pictured on the right), 6'8", 228lbs, (24th pick of 2004 Draft by Denver) - he's a guy who sat for a few years and eventually became my starting PF with his hustle and heart....never had a great deal of talent as he was a projected 2nd Rounder that I took a stab on....
The X: C-
Cosmo Farrell, 6'11", 272lbs, (14th pick of 2010 Draft by Denver) - with a name like Cosmo, how could you not like him? Cosmo is an athletic big, who's a ferocious dunker, big-time shot blocker and a power on the boards....anything else is non-existent in his game....backup big man with potential....
Honor Glow: From what we saw in the first half, this guy should be starting...he's quite the monster on the boards!
The X: PG-
Felton Lindow, 6'2", 189lbs, (1st pick of 2008 Draft by Denver) - Nuggets lucked out when we won the lottery....was superb as a rookie in the playoffs as he was
NBA Finals MVP on the Nuggets' way to their 1st of 2 titles of the decade....had a solid sophomore year, but was never the same after that and never developed as many had expected...
Ernie Johnson: Yes, that was a sad situation, but most people in the world can't even boast that much. Speaking of
NBA Finals MVPs, it's quite the NBA feel good story, with
Theobald Goode coming back from his 81 game injury.
Honor Glow: Yes, we didn't even know if he'd ever play again, much less be available this season...it was a bit of a mixed blessing...we really did a mini-overhaul as we had to say goodbye to (Isaiah) Oakley and (Kojo) Dent but we're able to bring in the likes of ultra quick
Hubert Abraham and Eisley who we feel we can develop into Goldberg's full-time replacement in a year or two.
Ernie Johnson: Well, that's all the time we have and we wish you well there in Portland and you Honor Glow, as you wind down your playing career in New Jersey and into Thank you gentlemen for joining us. Enjoy the second half!
