Suns Have Felt Right at Home on Road

By Mike Tulumello

The Suns may not be the NBA's best team, but so far they're far and away the best road team. They're a stunning 22-7 away from home, a record that includes the toughest portion of their road schedule. Tomorrow’s game at Dallas and a March 25 date at Miami figure to be their two toughest remaining tests. No other NBA team has won more than 18 road games. Moreover, the Suns need only to go 4-5 to have the best road record in franchise history. Phoenix went 27-14 in 1992-93, en route to the NBA Finals. All of this is surprising considering the Suns entered the season as the league's youngest team (though they've added experience in Bo Outlaw, Jim Jackson and Walter McCarty).

Normally, teams not known for great defense and rebounding don't run up great road records, Phoenix coach Mike D'Antoni pointed out. But with the Suns, "That doesn't seem to be the case," he said. So what gives? "We don't turn the ball over much," D'Antoni said. "That's a big reason." Also, "We have five guys who like to take big shots. And they hit big shots." The players have their own ideas. "We focus harder on the road, where everything is against us," Joe Johnson said. Amaré Stoudemire said the Suns take their responsibilities seriously. "Our young players are mature," he said. "We get our rest. We go to the hotel, get a nice dinner, watch a movie and get ready for showtime the next night."

Center Jake Voskuhl cited "unity and cohesion" on the road, in part because of the team's pregame prayer meetings. He said about half the team attends, more than attend at home, as the timing seems to fit the players schedules better. Whether their prayers are being answered or not, the Suns have suffered no crippling injuries this season, just routine "bumps and bruises," he pointed out. Of course, one reason Phoenix has such a great road record is the presence of Steve Nash, who said he has "no idea" how the Suns have run up such an impressive road mark. Yet Nash's teams in Dallas also had outstanding road records, so his leadership would seem to be an obvious factor.

SUNS VS. MAVERICKS
American Airlines Center, Dallas, 6:30 p.m., PST

TV, radio: FSAZ; KTAR 620
Records: Suns, 43-12; Mavericks, 35-18.
INJURY REPORT None

KEY MATCHUP: SUNS BENCH VS. MAVERICKS BENCH
Dallas has just added more depth to their team after acquiring Keith Van Horn in a trade deadline deal with the Bucks that sent Calvin Booth and Alan Henderson to the Bucks. Van Horn was averaging 18.6ppg and 9.2rpg on the Bucks. Jackson, McCarty, Barbosa and Hunter will see alot of time against Stackhouse, Van Horn, Daniels and Harris.

INSIDE THE SUNS
Phoenix decided to stay pat on trading day for the NBA. They hold a 1/2 game lead over the Spurs for the best record in the league. The Suns have struggled mightly against the Mavs coming close to winning each game, but they could never pull the victory out. Don't expect things to be any easier with the Mavs adding Van Horn to their already deep bench.

INSIDE THE MAVERICKS
The Maverics are the only team other than the Spurs that own a 2-0 advantage over the Suns. Dallas has been on fire as of late winning 4 out of their last 5 games as they stand in a 3-way tie for the 4th spot in the Western Conference with Memphis and Sacramento.

Mavs Too Much In Overtime
Dallas bench killed the Suns

DALLAS, Feb. 26 (Ticker) -- The Phoenix Suns certainly are not known for their defense nor are the Mavericks, which led to this high scoring battle. Seconds after Joe Johnson hit a go-ahead three, Johnson blocked a jumper that was shot by Michael Finley to make the game go into overtime, which the Suns couldn’t handle Dallas depth as they lost 117-111. Despite going into overtime with all the momentum, the Mavs let Jerry Stackhouse and Keith Van Horn do the talking in the extra period. They combined for 8 of the Mavs 14 points in the overtime. Marion scored 25 points, had 16 rebounds and dished out 8 assists who helped the Suns rally in the 4th quarter to make the game go into overtime. . The Suns scored the game's final seven points, starting with Quentin Richardson's 3-pointer with 62 seconds left to pull within 103-100.

Stoudemire, who scored 22 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, hit a pair of free throws to pull the Suns within one in the final minute and, after Nowitzki made an 18-foot jumper over Marion, Johnson buried a 25-footer in the face of Michael Finley with 4.7 seconds left. "We kept making shots, but it just wasn‘t enough to pull it out in OT," Phoenix coach Mike D'Antoni said. "The team that scores in overtime first wins is what I always say. Joe Johnson hit a big shot for us in the 4th quarter, Q hit a big shot. Amare, we rode him for a while, but it‘s just one of those things.. Everybody contributed and played hard. I thought it was a great game that we had the chance to win, but the Mavs killed us with their depth."

"I came off Amare's pick and had no intentions of passing," Johnson said. "Finley gave me a step so I just hesitated for a little bit and then pulled up for the sure three. He didn't really come out. He gave me about two feet." Van Horn, who was acquired from the Milwaukee Bucks on Thursday, was the biggest factor off the bench for the Mavs as he scored 15 points and grabbed 8 rebounds in his Dallas debut. "I was surprised that I played so well in my first game," Van Horn said. "Coach Nelson gave me the time to show what I can do and he trusted me in overtime to help us get past the Suns." Following Johnson's jumper, Finley took the ensuing inbounds pass and went up for a stop and pop jumper, but Johnson was there again saving the day with his only block of the game.

"I wasn‘t going to let him get an easy jumper without me contesting it," Johnson said. "He went up for it so fast and I just swiped at it and the clock ran out. "We knew that we were in for a dogfight after beating them twice already this season," said Mavericks forward Josh Howard, who scored 26 points on 11-of-17 shooting. "When the game went into overtime, we knew that we had to make a run because we had the home crowd on our side which helped us alot." Nash, Johnson and Stoudemire scored 22 points apiece for the Suns who are now 0-3 against the Mavericks this season. Nowitzki scored 20 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and had five turnovers for Dallas. Michael Finley added 16 points for the Mavericks, who have now won 5 of their last 6 games.

Thanks to micchy_boy for making the trades for me. If it wasn't for him, Van Horn wouldn't have went off on me for 15 points   j/k

CELTICS VS. SUNS
America West Arena, Phoenix, 6:00 p.m., PST

TV, radio: FSAZ; KTAR 620
Records: Celtics, 38-18; Suns, 43-13.
INJURY REPORT None

KEY MATCHUP: SHAWN MARION VS. ANTOINE WALKER
Walker is now back in Celtic green and is reunited with former running buddy, Paul Pierce. Walker averaged 23.9ppg ,12rpg and 4.6apg on the Hawks this season and is a very streaky shooter who can get it going if you don't watch out. Marion matches up very well with Walker so expect ot see alot of touches going to both players tonight.

INSIDE THE CELTICS
Boston holds the best record in the Eastern Conference with 38 wins and just 18 losses with the Pacers and Heat right behind them. Boston is on a 3-game winning streak. Pierce and Walker have the highest scoring duo in the league combining for 48.2ppg. With Payton coming back to Beantown after hte trade to the Hawks, Boston are now looking like a championship contender coming out of the East.

INSIDE THE SUNS
Phoenix is coming off another loss to the Dallas Mavericks in overtime. Things don't get any easier as they face a hot Celtics team tonight. Phoenix is still a half game ahead of the Spurs because they have played one more than the Spurs so far in the season.

Celtics Sprint Past Suns
Walker edged a double-double in the close victory

Newly acquired Antoine Walker led the Celtics past the Suns

PHOENIX, Feb. 27 (Ticker) -- The Boston Celtics broke through when the Phoenix Suns broke down. Antoine Walker had 22 points and 9 rebounds and Paul Pierce added 18 and 7 as the Celtics posted a 106-105 triumph over the Suns, who lost at home to an Eastern Conference opponent for the first time this season. The physical game included a couple of near skirmishes and a great deal of trash talking by both sides. "This to me is the way the game should be played," Celtics coach Doc Rivers said. "It was high intensity. There were a couple of times where both teams went over but I would love every game like this. When both teams let their emotions ride."

Boston shook off a disappointing final two minutes of regulation by getting the win. The Suns outscored Boston 30-18 in the 4th quarter and they went on a 6-0 run in the last 1:04 seconds. On Boston’s final possession with 22 seconds left, they went to Pierce in the corner who couldn’t get a shot off as a quick double team came from Johnson and McCarty as the shot clock expired. With the score at 106-105 with 21.2 seconds remaining, the Suns used their last timeout to advance the ball up to midcourt. They went to no other than Joe Johnson who has hit several big shots this season. He first passed the ball to Marion, then Stoudemire came up to set a pick for Marion and as help came, Pierce left Johnson surprisingly open on the wing and Marion gave an errant pass to Johnson who had to jump up to catch the ball. Pierce recovered back on Johnson with 7 seconds left and Marion came to set a pick as Johnson went to the right side and launched a 20-foot jumper over Pierce that hit the front of the rim. The Suns fouled Blount with 1.2 seconds left, and he missed both free throws. Nash shot from ¾’s of the court and it rimmed short.

"We used a lot of energy in the fourth quarter and we just couldn‘t get the last shot to go by Joe," admitted Suns forward Shawn Marion, who had another big rebound-game with 15 boards. "People are going to come here and try to talk trash to us and try to take us out of our game.” The Suns missed all but six of their 22 3-point attempts, but were perfect from the line shooting 19-19 compared to the Celtics 24-34. Nash had 22 points and dished out 11 assists and Joe Johnson added a game-high 27 for the Suns, who were 12-0 at home against teams from the East in 2004-05. Ricky Davis flirted with a triple-double as he had 16 points, 11 rebounds and 8 assists and Gary Payton added 15 for Boston, which beat Phoenix for just the second time in the last seven meetings. "That was a huge win for us and a great way to finish the road trip," Walker said. "Early on we jumped on them and we outlasted them. That is great finishing up the trip undefeated."
