Los Angeles – The San Antonio Spurs drew first blood at the STAPLES Center becoming the first team to win on the Lakers' home court during the postseason. A tired Lakers outfit played against the gritty defence that San Antonio provided and watched as their leader Kobe Bryant fell victum to his ankle injury again.
Bryant had scored 13 points and lead the Lakers back from trailing by 11 points up to a tied game with the Spurs. Then with 4:33 left in the third quarter on a lay up attempt against Tim Duncan. Bryant was shooting terribly from the field after going 2 for 13. He made 8 free throws out of 9 though and that was what kept the Lakers in the game. The Lakers captain was clearly upset with his injury as he returned from the dressing room in the final quarter and had to be consoled by teammates.
"It happened last year and again today. I cannot believe it."
Magic Johnson was sympathetic for his star player, "He hasn't had a break yet this year. One has to wonder when it will stop." However, he was more concerned about the team in general, "I don't know how we will do without Kobe."
Ron Artest led the team when Bryant was off the court and scored 5 three pointers, four in the final quarter. He finished the game with 28 points. Kwame Brown and Carlos Boozer both had doubles doubles and Brian Grant played with hustle from off the bench. The veteran played his best defence against the dominant Tim Duncan and grabbed 13 rebounds.
Tim Duncan scored 32 points and grabbed 17 rebounds. He also swatted 5 shots and kept the Lakers' frontcourt in check. "Tim just won the game for them basically. Rob finished us off," Brian Shaw said. Horry finished on 9 and 11, Tony Parker had 17 and 7 assists and Manu Ginobili scored 15 points.
"This is great. A great Game 1 win!" Bruce Bowen said excitedly, "Game 2 is going to be good."
The Spurs dominated the first quarter and went on a 14-0 rip at the biggining of the game. LA didn't score until there was 4:45 left in the first period off a Kwame Brown three pointer. Bryant then scored 6 points, two off jumpers and the Lakers only just made the double digit mark before the break.
The home side then made a comeback behind Kobe Bryant and Carlos Boozer in the second quarter. Bryant forced Duncan into foul trouble and the team took advantage of the big man's absence. Boozer scored 8 of his 22 points in the period. The highlights of the quarter was Juan Dixon's coast to coast and two Robert Horry put back dunks.
Quarter number three was quieter and created and set the stage for both teams to tough it out in a very close ball game. Before Bryant was lifted off the floor, the Lakers' captain had three other instnaces which must have lead to his final injury. With 9:12 left, Bryant went for a dunk but was fouled by Duncan in the air. Bryant landed awkwardly on his right leg. At the 6:45 mark, Bryant's missed lay up attempt saw the Spurs race downcourt for a fast break point as the Lakers' guard was seen in a heap and pulling himself up off the floor. Then a minute before he left the game, Bryant was pushed by Bruce Bowen on the fastbreak which brang the STAPLES crowd to its feet in protest.
After Bryant left the game, the race began as the Lakers scrambled to stay within reach of winning the game. The fourth period saw the Spurs start off with a quick 9-0 run but Ron Artest then went o na long range shooting romp and Kwame Brown's post game took LA back into contention.
With only 1:17 left, the Lakers trailed 85-83 and sent the ball into Carlos boozer who missed the dunk over Duncan. Brown who retreived the rebound went for a put back but was blocked by Duncan. The ball rolled out of bounds before Ron Artest knotted the scores at 85 with only 25.6 seconds left in the match.
The Spurs then had two chances to win the match. The first was Manu Ginobili's who went for an open jumper from the right hand side of the court. With Artest in the way, the shot sailed too far to the left and was knocked out of the paint by Boozer. The ball landed into the hands of Robert Horry.
"When the ball fell into Rob's hands, I was like Hell no, he better not get it off," Michael Cooper said. Horry then missed a jumpshot from the elbow with Boozer contesting the shot and Ratchuk grabbed the rebound as the buzzer sounded.

Overtime was even more exciting. The Lakers scored both of their buckets within the first three minutes and didn't score again. They had held the Spurs down to 89-85 with only 1:46 remaining before the Spurs made a gallant comeback. Tim Duncan scored back to back hook shots in the span of 40 seconds. Ron Artest missed a dunk with 57.2 secodns left on the clock. The Spurs called a timeout to set up a play. Tony Parker had a screen set by Tim Duncan but it went wrong as Ron Artest, Carlos Boozer and Brian Grant all got tangled with the two Spurs' players freeing up an open and deadly Robert Horry on the left hand arc.
"When I got free, I knew it was my turn," the Verteran Clutch perfromer said. With 35.1 seconds left, Horry let fly a three pointer which would win the game. As the crowd went silent, the Spurs ran downcourt with caution and closed out the game by denying the Lakers any open looks to the basket.
"A former Laker beating his team with the way he used to win games for his old team," Jack Nicholson stated, "Boy is that ironic?"
