Kings Even Up Series

Los Angeles Lakers 84 @ Sacramento Kings 93

21-8 Los Angeles Lakers tied series with 19-10 Sacramento Kings 2-2

Image
ABOVE: Bibby, Webber, Peja can't start to celebrate
just yet as the series goes back to LA

Sacramento – Kobe Bryant couldn't get the Lakers past their Pacific Divison rivals this time. The reigning NBA Champions played at a higher level in the fourth quarter and used a 12-2 run to blow past the visiting team. Peja Stojakovic knocked down trey after trey in the fourth period to bury the Lakers.

Bryant tried to take over down the stretch and failed for the first time in a lot of games. The star guard finished with a game high 34 points but shot on 12 for 33 shooting from the field. He missed all 9 of his attempts in the final 7 minutes of the match as the Arco Arena crowd booed and jeered at him.

"I tried to do a bit too much tonight," Kobe admitted, "But noone was taking any chances with the ball. I had no choice." Ron Artest disagreed with his captain and responded, "That is just bull. He knew that everytime he hoisted up a shot, there was someone else open."

Artest was the only other Lakers to score in double figures. He finished with 23 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists. Carlos Boozer did well on the glass and grabbed 14 reboudns for the Lakers.

Head Coach Magic Johnson was concerned for his team, "This may be the end. All we can do is go home and play some real basketball."

"This is the perfect opportunity for us to take out the win," Chris Webber said, "We're even and we can take it as if it's a whole new series. It's perfect because it's winner takes all next game and we thrive in these situations." Webber helped lead the Kings with 22 points, 15 rebounds. Peja finished on 25 points and 8 rebounds and Mike Bibby was solid with 18 and 11 assists.

The game started off great for the Kings as they took a 14 point lead into the second quarter. However a spirited Lakers comeback in the second and third quarters had both teams neck and neck entering intermission. After the break, the Kings started to dominate on defence and offence.

By the 3:14 mark, Peja nailed his fourth trey of the quarter and extended the Kings to an unbeatable 13 point margin.

No team has ever won a series after being 0-2 down but the Kigns stand a very fair chance of advancing despite taking a beating in LA's home venue. Game 5 will be played in 2 days.

Will Kobe Take the Lakers Back to the Top?

Image
ABOVE: Are these happy days over?

This is the question that was to be answered last season. Kobe got injured and the Lakers were knocked out. Word went quiet and now with the Lakers at 2-2 against the Sacramento Kings, the question that has been on many people's minds since Shaq divorced Kobe has resurfaced.

We all thought that Kobe was good enough to complete the job last season. After all, he had already carried the squad as far as he could by himself before falling to injury. It's been hard to judge him this season due to him playing only half the season. In a season where the Lakers topped the West, noone will know whether Kobe's presence would have helped the team to a record better than 21-8.

When the Kobster returned, he's had a string of successes ever since. A 50 point game and a handful of clutch performances has cemented his status as superstar into the minds of all oposing teams. However, the role of championship winner and legend hasn't been mentioned yet.

His reputation as someone who can help win it all has been tarnished by his inability to step it up against the Sacramento Kings. The loss in Game 3 was a team loss but Kobe didn't do enough to try to win. In Game 4, he did too much. Bryant has started to receive heavy criticism once again for his play and it looks like the only way everyone will love him instantly is a Game 5 win.

This of course means a series win. And an appearance in the Western Conference Finals for the 7th consecutive year. Ever since Shaq left, the Lakers have never looked stable and consistently in form. One has to wonder how the team let the Kings come back from 0-2 down. And whether Kobe will ever win a fourth ring.

True Team Effort Puts Showtime Back in LA

Sacramento Kings 110 @ Los Angeles Lakers 115

21-8 Los Angeles Lakers wins series against 19-10 Sacramento Kings 3-2

Los Angeles – A true team effort and a huge fourth quarter helped the Lakers relive their glorius history. With a mix of the 80's showtime era teamwork and a mix of the Lakers' comeback luck of most their recent dynasty, the Lakers booked their place in a seventh consecutive Western Conference Finals. All Lakers' starters scored in double figures in Game 5 of the Western Conference Semi-finals and were led by captain Kobe Bryant who top scored with 25 points and 7 assists.

Kwame Brown scored 24 points and 14 rebounds, Carlos Boozer has 20 and 10, Ron Artest had 19, 6, 6 and 3 steals. Rookie Fredrik Ratchuk recorded a career high 6 playoff steals in a career high 46 minutes. The rookie added 16 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists and a block to his most impressive box score of the postseason.

Chris Webber who had promised a Lakers defeat went down early with 6 fouls at the beginning of the fourth quarter. The PF had scored 13 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists before fouling out and watched his team give up a double digit lead to the home side. “I don’t understand how we let the Lakers come back.”

Brad Miller sustained an ankle injury with 4:53 left and sat out the rest of the game also after going for 19 and 12. Peja Stojakovic scored 21 points and Doug Christie added 15 of his own. Mike Bibby was the catalyst in the third quarter, where he hit all four of his treys and helped the Kings to a 12 point lead at intermission. Bibby finished the game with 23 and 7 assists.

“I don’t know how the Lakers could have made it back. The fourth quarter seemed to go so fast,” Bibby tried to explain, “I think I concede defeat to the much better team. We lost our two big men and they were all healthy. So next year, we will beat them.”

Bobby Jackson scored all 10 of his points in the final 6 minutes of the game as he tried to help counter LA’s scoring blitz but to no avail. “I tried my best,” the veteran said, “This may be one of my last postseasons.”

The Kings were blistering hot in the third quarter as they hit 7 of their 10 three pointers to open a wide gap against the home team. The two teams had been only separated by single figures ever since tip off. After Bibby hit back to back long range shots with 4:34 left, the Kings took a 15 point advantage.

Little did the Kings know that the Lakers would rally the lead down to 9 and by the time they were still up by 9 with 4:38 left in the game, the Lakers would put up one final run to try and win the game.

“With about four minutes left, I told the team that it was make or break. The Kings already didn’t have Miller or Webber on the floor so we needed to take advantage of it,” Magic Johnson said.

The Lakers returned on court and went on a 8-0 scoring romp. Kwame and Boozer both scored 4 points each and with 2:23 to play, the Lakers were only trailing 107-106. On the following play, Ron Artest scored a trey to put LA ahead by 2. Peja responded automatically with a long range bomb of his own and with 1:36, the score was 110-109.

Carlos Boozer drove into the lane and made an emphatic dunk; the turning point of the game. He converted a three point play and the Lakers lead 110-112. The team never looked back as the crowd cheered home the Lakers. Ratchuk stole an inbounds pass with 48.2 seconds left and was fouled. He sank one free throw. Mike Bibby missed a three on the other end, the Lakers allowed the Kings to grab a rebound before Carlos Boozer swatted Peja’s attempt at a trey. Christie who grabbed the ball lost it to Bryant at half way before the Lakers captain completed the easy lay up for the bucket and the win with 12.2 seconds left in the game.

The STAPLES Center crowd stood up to send their home team to the dressing room with a standing ovation as they chanted, “Kobe, Kobe, Kobe.”

Brad Miller congratulated the Lakers, “They put up a fight. Even though we don’t defend our crown, the Lakers are good enough to take it.”

CONFERENCE FINALS: Spurs Meet Most Hated Opponent

21-8 LA Lakers (1) vs. 20-9 San Antonio Spurs (2)

Defense wins championships. The Spurs better hope so because when they meet the Lakers, bad memories of last season will return to their heads. Kobe Bryant was a one man wrecking crew last year as he averaged over 50 points in only two postseason games. It included one 71 point performance in Game 2; while he was injured. It’s the two top seeds out West battling it out and we shall see who rules supreme:

Center: Kwame Brown vs. Tim Duncan

After finding not many ways to slow down Brad Miller, Kwame finds himself stuck with a harder opponent, NBA perennial MVP candidate Tim Duncan. Duncan’s collection of simple low post moves and offensive arsenal along with his strength and basketball I.Q. is just too much for the younger and less experienced Brown to handle. Brown will find it difficult to contain the 7’0” player, playing out of position.

Edge: San Antonio

Forwards: Carlos Boozer/Ron Artest vs. Robert Horry/Bruce Bowen

In anticipation for Kobe Bryant’s presence, Gregg Popovich has reinserted the ever persistent Bruce Bowen into the lineup. However, Ron Artest has risen to become as much of a scoring threat as Kobe, with his many open looks at the hoop. The Lakers’ forward combo is talented however inexperienced. Horry, a former Laker, has shown glimpses of his clutch shooting this postseason and along with Bowen’s defence and the duo’s experience, they have a chance at wearing down Artest and Boozer. In the end though, the talent of Artest and Boozer at both ends of the floor should have more impact.

Edge: Los Angeles

Guards: Kobe Bryant/Fredrik Ratchuk vs. Manu Ginobili/Tony Parker

The decision by Popovich to sit the older Brent Barry and start Manu Ginobili is interesting. In doing so, it is expected that Barry comes on court in short spurts to try to slow down Kobe, and then put Manu back into the game to start the scoring game again. Both players are able scorers however; Ginobili is more of a slasher, more suitable in a fast paced series that we will see. Tony Parker is the Spurs’ only hope to win the series as he is faster than both Lakers guards and is very good with his scoring ability. Ratchuk has been impressive handling the Lakers’ offence but Kobe remains the one who determines wins. Bryant is so feared by the Spurs that Popovich told of his intentions on how his team was to handle the guard, “I know he’s listening. Even if I don’t say it, he knows we’re coming for him. We’re going to send double team after double team against him. If we can shut him down, that means we can win the series.” Bryant is ready for the challenge, “I’m going to shoot them (defenders) down, one by one.”

Edge: Los Angeles

Bench:

The Lakers’ bench hasn’t had much of a chance to play in the last round and the trend seems like it should continue into the conference finals. Magic Johnson explained, “This is important. We really need to win these games because they actually count.” The Spurs will have Brent Barry coming off the bench. The sharpshooter is starter quality and will be a handful for the Lakers. The man coming of the bench to watch is Blaise Galand. The rookie SF who was relgated to the bench from his starting spot by Bowen could be an X-factor for the Spurs.

Edge: Spurs

Intangibles:

The Spurs have had a week’s rest before the series starts. This will be an advantage to them as the Lakers’ only completed a five game series against the Kings. The stage is set for a new NBA champion and the Lakers are confident in winning. Both teams are proven winners, clutch performers and great squads. This series doesn’t have many factors residing outside of actual basketball performance.

Edge: Tie

Result:

This will be another hard fought series for either team. It’s hard to judge who will win this one but Kobe has stepped up well in the postseason thus far. An early season 1 point loss this season may indicate a closer competition though and I am sitting on the fence for this prediction.

Prediction: Lakers win 3-2

It was the best game. I guess I'm going to give the SPurs the win at home and write up the recap... without the stats... but I got the general gist of what happened and who scored what.

Damn, trust my luck. I really cannot and am not i nthe mood to replay Game 1.

I got all the screenshots i need to prove i played it...

20-9 San Antonio Spurs leads series against 21-8 Los Angeles Lakers 1-0

ABOVE: (Right) Kobe Bryant set the tone with defence but (Bottom Left) then fell victim to his recurring injury

Los Angeles – The San Antonio Spurs drew first blood at the STAPLES Center becoming the first team to win on the Lakers' home court during the postseason. A tired Lakers outfit played against the gritty defence that San Antonio provided and watched as their leader Kobe Bryant fell victum to his ankle injury again.

Bryant had scored 13 points and lead the Lakers back from trailing by 11 points up to a tied game with the Spurs. Then with 4:33 left in the third quarter on a lay up attempt against Tim Duncan. Bryant was shooting terribly from the field after going 2 for 13. He made 8 free throws out of 9 though and that was what kept the Lakers in the game. The Lakers captain was clearly upset with his injury as he returned from the dressing room in the final quarter and had to be consoled by teammates.

"It happened last year and again today. I cannot believe it."

Magic Johnson was sympathetic for his star player, "He hasn't had a break yet this year. One has to wonder when it will stop." However, he was more concerned about the team in general, "I don't know how we will do without Kobe."

Ron Artest led the team when Bryant was off the court and scored 5 three pointers, four in the final quarter. He finished the game with 28 points. Kwame Brown and Carlos Boozer both had doubles doubles and Brian Grant played with hustle from off the bench. The veteran played his best defence against the dominant Tim Duncan and grabbed 13 rebounds.

Tim Duncan scored 32 points and grabbed 17 rebounds. He also swatted 5 shots and kept the Lakers' frontcourt in check. "Tim just won the game for them basically. Rob finished us off," Brian Shaw said. Horry finished on 9 and 11, Tony Parker had 17 and 7 assists and Manu Ginobili scored 15 points.

"This is great. A great Game 1 win!" Bruce Bowen said excitedly, "Game 2 is going to be good."

The Spurs dominated the first quarter and went on a 14-0 rip at the biggining of the game. LA didn't score until there was 4:45 left in the first period off a Kwame Brown three pointer. Bryant then scored 6 points, two off jumpers and the Lakers only just made the double digit mark before the break.

The home side then made a comeback behind Kobe Bryant and Carlos Boozer in the second quarter. Bryant forced Duncan into foul trouble and the team took advantage of the big man's absence. Boozer scored 8 of his 22 points in the period. The highlights of the quarter was Juan Dixon's coast to coast and two Robert Horry put back dunks.

Quarter number three was quieter and created and set the stage for both teams to tough it out in a very close ball game. Before Bryant was lifted off the floor, the Lakers' captain had three other instnaces which must have lead to his final injury. With 9:12 left, Bryant went for a dunk but was fouled by Duncan in the air. Bryant landed awkwardly on his right leg. At the 6:45 mark, Bryant's missed lay up attempt saw the Spurs race downcourt for a fast break point as the Lakers' guard was seen in a heap and pulling himself up off the floor. Then a minute before he left the game, Bryant was pushed by Bruce Bowen on the fastbreak which brang the STAPLES crowd to its feet in protest.

After Bryant left the game, the race began as the Lakers scrambled to stay within reach of winning the game. The fourth period saw the Spurs start off with a quick 9-0 run but Ron Artest then went o na long range shooting romp and Kwame Brown's post game took LA back into contention.

With only 1:17 left, the Lakers trailed 85-83 and sent the ball into Carlos boozer who missed the dunk over Duncan. Brown who retreived the rebound went for a put back but was blocked by Duncan. The ball rolled out of bounds before Ron Artest knotted the scores at 85 with only 25.6 seconds left in the match.

The Spurs then had two chances to win the match. The first was Manu Ginobili's who went for an open jumper from the right hand side of the court. With Artest in the way, the shot sailed too far to the left and was knocked out of the paint by Boozer. The ball landed into the hands of Robert Horry.

"When the ball fell into Rob's hands, I was like Hell no, he better not get it off," Michael Cooper said. Horry then missed a jumpshot from the elbow with Boozer contesting the shot and Ratchuk grabbed the rebound as the buzzer sounded.

Image
ABOVE: Robert Horry sinks the game winning three with 35.1 seconds left

Overtime was even more exciting. The Lakers scored both of their buckets within the first three minutes and didn't score again. They had held the Spurs down to 89-85 with only 1:46 remaining before the Spurs made a gallant comeback. Tim Duncan scored back to back hook shots in the span of 40 seconds. Ron Artest missed a dunk with 57.2 secodns left on the clock. The Spurs called a timeout to set up a play. Tony Parker had a screen set by Tim Duncan but it went wrong as Ron Artest, Carlos Boozer and Brian Grant all got tangled with the two Spurs' players freeing up an open and deadly Robert Horry on the left hand arc.

"When I got free, I knew it was my turn," the Verteran Clutch perfromer said. With 35.1 seconds left, Horry let fly a three pointer which would win the game. As the crowd went silent, the Spurs ran downcourt with caution and closed out the game by denying the Lakers any open looks to the basket.

"A former Laker beating his team with the way he used to win games for his old team," Jack Nicholson stated, "Boy is that ironic?"

that Horry 3pter looks very familiar :P

I knew Horry would be huge, especially when you didn't mention him in the previews....and I still think the Manu/Parker combo is at least the equal to your backcourt

lets see if you can make the necessary adjustments and get it done in game 2
