Sacramento Kings 91 @ Los Angeles Lakers 96
21-8 Los Angeles Lakers lead series against 19-10 Sacramento Kings 1-0

ABOVE: Kobe Bryant (8) was unstoppable in the final period
Los Angeles – The defending NBA Champions have something to frown about as they dropped a game that they could have easily won. At halftime, the Lakers trailed by 11 but then a flurry of three point misses by the Kings and sloppy defence allowed the number one seed to come back to a win at home.
Kobe Bryant was cheered on by the STAPLES Center crowd after enduring a tough first half. The All-star guard struggled in the first quarter making only 2 of 8 from the field before not attempting another shot in the second and third quarters of the game. He made the most of his time letting his teammates do the work and dishing out 9 dimes in the middle two periods.
Kwame Brown finished with 16 points and 11 rebounds while Ron Artest had 17, 9, 3 and 3 steals. Rookie Fredrik Ratchuk played a well balanced 7, 4, 6 and 3 steals and Carlos Boozer fouled out with 18 points and 6 rebounds. By the fourth quarter, all four starters had accumulated their statistics and then there came Kobe's time to shine.
Bryant was unstoppable as he had an array of layups and even two spectacular dunks over the Kings' defence. Bryant finished on 26 points, 6 rebounds, 11 assists and 2 steals. Kobe's three pointer and then next steal at the baseline and layup broke a Kings' 8-0 run and helped put LA back into a game which could have gone the other way. The Lakers had trailed 78-72 before Bryant made the stellar plays with 7:12 left.
He then scored the Lakers' next 9 points and had the team up 86-84 with only 4:48 on the clock. "Kobe was untouchable. He was too good for us," Brad Miller said.
Bryant showed the STAPLES crowd that you didn't need to be a giant to play the game as he avenged the ejection of Carlos Boozer. Kobe fouled All-star Center Brad Miller out in the process of sealing the game with 6 straight free throws. In the final three minutes of the match, Bryant dominated the 7 footer and made a fool out of him.
"After that scuffle which earned Booze that tech foul, I wasn't too happy," Bryant replied.
The Kings did have a chance to tie it up with the score at 94-91. The time remaining on the clock was 23.4 seconds. Bryant had already fouled Miller out a minute prior and the Kings surrendered a slim 91-89 lead. Mike Bibby made a mistake he should regret as he pump faked twice against Bryant and wasn't quick enough to get off a shot. Bryant swatted the ball into the stands.
The Kings then called a timeout and Kobe forced Bibby into another mistake, stealing the ball at midcourt with 7.4 seconds left. Kobe then was sent to the line to make two free throws and Artest stole the inbounds and ran the clock down for the Lakers to win Game 1.
"We're confident we can win the rest of this series," Magic Johnson said.
Brad Miller finished with 21, 16, 5 and 3 blocks. Webber and Peja scored 19 and 14 respectively while defensive minded Doug Christie played surprisingly well with 18, 7 and 5.
