THE GAME: GOLDEN STATE WARRIORS vs. CLEVELAND CAVALIERS
The Warriors were carrying a 10-game win streak with them going into this game, based on the excellent performances of their newly formed backcourt duo of Baron Davis and Jason Richardson. That duo’s functionality was disrupted early in the 1st quarter when
BD slightly twisted his ankle and steeped on the bench, leaving J-Rich alone on the perimeter to handle the offense.
LeBron James of the Cavaliers also had a minor injury a little bit later, leaving his team shorthanded for 10 minutes or so. Without Davis and James on the court, Cleveland overshadowed their opponents in the 1st period, with
Zydrunas Ilgauskas dominating the paint against Swift and Murphy,
closing the quarter 25 – 31. It got much worse for Golden State later on, when LeBron returned to the floor all the while Davis was in too much pain and discomfort to confidently play his game. Z kept scoring and rebounding without equal, and James went on a scoring spree near the end, when it was only
Richardson who was fighting for the Warriors.
The half ended 45 – 59 for Cleveland.
Despite LeBron James missing almost the entire first quarter with injury, Ilgauskas carried the Cavs all by himself to a big half time lead…
The second half started out with J
-Rich on fire from the field, shooting, passing and dunking constantly, to make it 5
7 – 66 halfway through the 3rd. But at that time
Big Z woke up again and starting causing no end of trouble to Murphy, who was clearly underpowered to play Center, defending a 7’ 3” behemoth like Ilgauskas. Despite
Baron Davis playing through pain, racking up 8 assists, Cleveland retained the lead around the 15 point region, helped by
Jeff McInnis and Eric Snow who took turns in running the point efficiently.
The quarter ended 67 – 83.
Ilgauskas went on being unstoppable during the 4th quarter, while
LeBron James playedthrough pain himself to second him with excellent defense on Richardson, passing to the open man and occasionally putting up his jumpers from 18 feet.
The score was 76 – 95 with 4 minutes to go, and
Mike Montgomery seemed to surrender the game by throwing in his subs. Instead of the game dying out, though, things got riled up as
the amazing Golden State’s backups started mounting an improbable comeback in the final minutes. 18 year old
Andris Biedrins scored 11 points and
Nikoloz Tskitishvilli had 8 to spearhead the attempt, only to fall out just short in the end, with
the Cavs winning this game 97 – 103.
Jason Richardson in the third, and Andris Biedrins in the fourth quarter respectively, led the Warriors’ surge against the Cavs, but fell short in the end, surrendering the W to the opposition...

GS TOP PLAYERS:
JASON RICHARDSON 23pts – 9rebs – 3ast
BARON DAVIS 10pts – 8ast – 6stl

TheAftermath: The Warriors drop their first game after 10 consecutive victories, but are still in the playoff race, sitting 8th in the West. Stromile Swift had some problems with his shoulder during the game, and while he will not miss any games, his discomfort might affect his performance for a few days. Same with Baron Davis. His sore leg will probably hinder his movements and quickness for the next 4 or 5 days. The good thing is that the Warriors’ next game is in 4 days.
