JANUARY 22, 2005

THE GAME: GOLDEN STATE WARRIORS vs. CLEVELAND CAVALIERS

Image

The Warriors were carrying a 10-game win streak with them going into this game, based on the excellent performances of their newly formed backcourt duo of Baron Davis and Jason Richardson. That duo’s functionality was disrupted early in the 1st quarter when BD slightly twisted his ankle and steeped on the bench, leaving J-Rich alone on the perimeter to handle the offense. LeBron James of the Cavaliers also had a minor injury a little bit later, leaving his team shorthanded for 10 minutes or so. Without Davis and James on the court, Cleveland overshadowed their opponents in the 1st period, with Zydrunas Ilgauskas dominating the paint against Swift and Murphy, closing the quarter 25 – 31. It got much worse for Golden State later on, when LeBron returned to the floor all the while Davis was in too much pain and discomfort to confidently play his game. Z kept scoring and rebounding without equal, and James went on a scoring spree near the end, when it was only Richardson who was fighting for the Warriors. The half ended 45 – 59 for Cleveland.

Image Image
Despite LeBron James missing almost the entire first quarter with injury, Ilgauskas carried the Cavs all by himself to a big half time lead…

The second half started out with J-Rich on fire from the field, shooting, passing and dunking constantly, to make it 57 – 66 halfway through the 3rd. But at that time Big Z woke up again and starting causing no end of trouble to Murphy, who was clearly underpowered to play Center, defending a 7’ 3” behemoth like Ilgauskas. Despite Baron Davis playing through pain, racking up 8 assists, Cleveland retained the lead around the 15 point region, helped by Jeff McInnis and Eric Snow who took turns in running the point efficiently. The quarter ended 67 – 83. Ilgauskas went on being unstoppable during the 4th quarter, while LeBron James playedthrough pain himself to second him with excellent defense on Richardson, passing to the open man and occasionally putting up his jumpers from 18 feet. The score was 76 – 95 with 4 minutes to go, and Mike Montgomery seemed to surrender the game by throwing in his subs. Instead of the game dying out, though, things got riled up as the amazing Golden State’s backups started mounting an improbable comeback in the final minutes. 18 year old Andris Biedrins scored 11 points and Nikoloz Tskitishvilli had 8 to spearhead the attempt, only to fall out just short in the end, with the Cavs winning this game 97 – 103.

Jason Richardson in the third, and Andris Biedrins in the fourth quarter respectively, led the Warriors’ surge against the Cavs, but fell short in the end, surrendering the W to the opposition...

POG: ZYDRUNAS ILGAUSKAS 25pts – 19rebs – 12/16 FGs

GS TOP PLAYERS:

JASON RICHARDSON 23pts – 9rebs – 3ast

BARON DAVIS 10pts – 8ast – 6stl

TROY MURPHY 15pts – 8rebs – 3ast

TheAftermath: The Warriors drop their first game after 10 consecutive victories, but are still in the playoff race, sitting 8th in the West. Stromile Swift had some problems with his shoulder during the game, and while he will not miss any games, his discomfort might affect his performance for a few days. Same with Baron Davis. His sore leg will probably hinder his movements and quickness for the next 4 or 5 days. The good thing is that the Warriors’ next game is in 4 days.

GAME OF THE DAY:

NEW ORLEANS 122 - LA CLIPPERS 121 (Jamal Mashburn 37pts – 10rebs)

Coming Up: The trio of Jason Kidd, Vince Carter and Richard Jefferson are visiting Oakland on January 26th... Will they stop the amazing duo of BD and J-Rich? Will they be kept from scoring? Or will Troy Murphy and Stromile Swift have a party against their wek frontcourt? Stay tuned, and find out...

Kill Carter; I want to see J-Rich completely abuse him and posterize him until Carter can't take anymore. Then do it him some more. I'm rooting for you all the way in this one, TAKE DOWN CARTER!

As you can see, I'm just an angry Raptor fan.........

Haha, okay, I'll trade for Bruce Bowen and have him plant his feet under Carter's when Vince lands after jump shots. That'll do it... Maybe I'll shoot Rob Babcock too, if he shows up in Oakland...

Must be hard being a Raptor fan these days...

looking at it that way, it's a definite upgrade....basically trading Pietrus, Fisher and the bad contract of Foyle for Swift and Walton (Y)

THE GAME: GOLDEN STATE WARRIORS vs. NEW JERSEY NETS

Image

A fast start in this game helped the Warriors take an early lead, with a charge being spearheaded and masterfully organized by Baron Davis’ inspirational passing and running of the fast break. Jason Richardson and Rodney White were the beneficiaries of his assist, with Luke Walton providing the spark off the bench as usual. With only Richard Jefferson showing some flair, the Nets could not help but trail 28 – 19 in the first quarter. In the second period, Golden State maintained its dominance upon the game tempo, with Murphy crashing the boards without any semblance of opposition from New Jersey’s youthful and inexperienced frontcourt of Krstic, Collins and Jabari Smith. Troy’s offensive boards resulted in a lot of points in the paint and renewed possession time, helping the home team lead 48 – 35 at the half.

With Murphy having no equal underneath the basket and only RJ playing well for the visitors, the Warriors had no problem whatsoever to lead in the half...

The second half started with defenses claiming the spotlight, allowing only 34 points total to be scored in the next 12 minutes. With Rodney White starting at PF and surging his way to a quick and effortless 15 points, courtesy of some post-up play and offensive rebounding, the Warriors maintained their double digit lead, despite Jason Kidd’s masterful running of New Jersey’s plays. With Vince Carter being shutout by Jason Richardson, the 3rd period ended 63 – 52. Offenses took control again in the 4th quarter, with this time 63 points total scored until the final buzzer. Jason Richardson continued to do an excellent job man-marking and occasionally man-handling Vince Carter, therefore putting him out of contention. Murphy and White were grabbing the offensive boards thus getting some more points next to their names on the board. From the Nets, Kidd and Jefferson were doing their best , but in the end they alone could not prevent the Warriors from winning this game easily 97 – 83.

POG: TROY MURPHY 17pts – 20rebs – 4ast – 2stl

GS BOXSCORE:

NEW JERSEY TOP PLAYER:

The Aftermath: Warriors win their 11th out of their 12 last games and are sitting tightly inside the playoff seeded team in the West. Stromile Swift did not participate in this game for precautionary reasons, due to a slight injury. Baron Davis played few minutes as he was still feeling a little sore from his last game minor injury.

I've been preparing this year's draft class and I've been thinking of adding some NLSC guys towards th eend of the second round to fill up the ranks... Chances are most of them won't get drafted at all but I'll see what I can do via free agency.

So all those who are interested start sending me player profiles, player comparisons and cyberfaces at

dweaver99027@yahoo.gr

Thank you. :D
