THE GAME: GOLDEN STATE WARRIORS vs. MIAMI HEAT

Image

The Warriors were one of the hottest teams in the league going into this game, having won 5 straight after trading for Baron Davis, and they seemed to carry that momentum and confidence with them in the opening stages of this contest. Davis scored and passed, Murphy gave no end of trouble to the sluggish Udonis Haslem, and Jason Richardson excited the Oakland Arena with 2 spectacular dunks, one of which in Shaquille’s face. Haslem was unable to contain Murphy, but was the main offensive threat for the Heat, with Shaq being played brilliantly by Elden Campbell. The first quarter ended 17 – 18. In the second period, Shaq woke up and dominated after Campbell’s age and tired legs forced Coach Montgomery to sub in Vlade Divac for him. The Serbian flopped and struggled, but his antics were known by O’Neal ever since their famous matchup during that Kings – Lakers series a few years back, so the Diesel proceeded to demolish poor Vlade. Damon Jones was hitting the open shots that Shaq’s double-teaming provided, and Miami closed in on the score. But a late quarter charge for the home team, spearheaded by Troy Murphy and Baron Davis reinstated a double digit lead, ending the half 49 – 39 for Golden State.

Image
Troy Murphy was constantly ridiculing Haslem on offense, ending the half with 12 points on 6/6 shooting from the field…

The Warriors had an offensive and defensive explosion early in the 3rd, with Luke Walton coming off the bench for Dunleavy early, and proceeding to cause trouble to Eddie Jones using their height mis-match at the SF position, shooting over poor Eddie. Jason Richardson picked up where Luke left off around mid-quarter, having scored a total of 21 points in the first 36 minutes, helping his team increase the lead in the process. The score was 76 – 58 at the end. In the final quarter, Shaq really picked up his game and monopolized Miami’s offense, but to his disdain, no one else on his team helped enough to stop the surging Warriors. Golden State’s bench was covering for the starters brilliantly, with Rodney White, Luke Walton and Andris Biedrins all providing spark on offense, keeping the lead around the 20 point region, up until the end. With Murphy closing the game strong, the Warriors had no real trouble clinching this game 104 – 85.

Eddie Jones scored only 2 points in the second half, courtesy of this alley oop dunk, and could not help Shaq mount a comeback for the Heat…

THE GAME: GOLDEN STATE WARRIORS vs. LOS ANGELES LAKERS

Image

The Warriors hosted their famous Californian rivals in the Arena in Oakland, after having won their last 7 games of the season. They started well in this one as, well, being 6-0 up in the first 2 minutes. The Lakers did not lose touch with the score, though, and led by the surprisingly energetic Brian Grant, managed to come up ahead 14 – 16 around mid-quarter. From then and up until the end of the first 12 minutes, Baron Davis and Jason Richardson put on their own backcourt show, with the former passing and the latter executing, closing the quarter 27 – 23 for Golden State. In the second period, LA managed to detain those two on defense, and led by the surging Kobe Bryant on offense, regained the lead in a matter of minutes. Bryant finished the half with 18 points and great defense on J-Rich, while Grant and Mihm contained Troy Murphy, helping the visitors lead 39 – 46 at halftime.

Image
Kobe’s shooting and driving to the basket with purpose resulted in the Lakers’ outscoring their opponents in the first half…

The second half started with Los Angeles continuing exactly where they left off in the end of the first. This time Kobe was seconded on offense by Chucky Atkins and his effective perimeter shooting. The visitors were up by 14, 43 – 57 , three minutes into the 3rd and were looking to break further away. But thankfully for the Warriors, their defense woke up and limited Bryant’s touches, while on offense Baron Davis was on fire from outside, passing for 5 assist in the meantime. With Richardson and Murphy picking up the pace as well near the end of the quarter, Golden State closed in on their opposition, 70 – 75 at the end of 3. During the final period of the contest, the home team continued to push for a total comeback, spearheaded by Troy Murphy who got himself a lot of hustle points, courtesy of his offensive rebounding. Kobe would not give up the fight, though, carrying his team throughout the end . It was close in the final stretches, with the deadlock being broken by some crucial three pointers by Mike Dunleavy, that made it 98 – 92 with 1:18 to go. From then on, the Lakers would keep sending Davis to the free throw line, only to allow him to close the deal, 103 – 94 for Golden State in the end.

Troy Murphy was a vital cog in a well-oiled Golden State machine in the second half, during which tey rallied to victory...

Coming Up: Rumors have it that the Golden State Warriors have made a trade with another NBA franchise, involving 4 players moving grounds. Will the Warriors finally bring Shaq to the Bay Area? ( j/k  ). Will they get an athletic big man that can block? Will they go for a backup PG as an insurance for a potential Baron Davis injury? Or have they finally had it with Mike Dunleavy's inconsistency and decided to ship him off ? Stay tuned, and find out ...

Sat May 07, 2005 4:29 am

You better not have traded B-Diddy or J-Rich. Anyone else I don't care.

The Oakland Tribune, January 16, 2005

"Golden State Warriors' owner and General Manager Lace Donovan, released a press announcement this morning informing the media and the team's faithful, that the franchise has been involved in a 4 player swap deal with the Memphis Grizzlies. On their way to Tennessee are Centers Vlade Divac and Elden Campbell, while PF/C Stromile Swift and C Jake Tsakalidis will be playing for the Warriors, starting from the game against the Nuggets tomorrow evening.

It was a surprise move for Golden State, letting go of their 2 of 3 main big guys ( the other one being Troy Murphy ), to get a constantly underachiveng but immensely athletic Power Forward, and a Greek giant who was stuck on the Grizzlies' IR up until now, not to mention he is due around 10 million dollars for the next 3 years.

The Warriors, said Donovan, desperately needed a defensive player who could play the 4 and 5 spots, and could block shots. While Swift is somewhat undersized to play the 5, being 6' 9" and rather lanky, his incredible leaping and timing skills make up for most of these shortcomings. Stromile averaged only 8.1 ppg and 7.9 rpg so far this season for the Griz, coming off the bench in all their games. Big Jake Tsakalidis was rotting in the Injured Reserve prior to the trade, and is not predicted to get many minutes in Golden State either, being more of a salary cap banancing addicion tha anything else.

On the other hand, Memphis lost a talented youngster, but rumors have it that he would not resign with th eteam this summer, and they wouldn't want to lose him for nothing. In exchange for letting him walk, they got two guys that play a position the Griz are aching, that of Center, especially with Lorentzen Wright being out for 7 weeks due to injury. They also managed to get rid of the unwanted tsakalidis and his overpriced contract.

Golden State's new acquisitions will arrive in Oakland this evening and wil be ready for actuion tomorrow, when the Warriors host the Nuggets"
