THE GAME: GOLDEN STATE WARRIORS vs. MEMPHIS GRIZZLIES

Image

This contest started with Jason Richardson being hot from the field scoring his team's first 6 points and making a good start for a struggling Warriors' team in the season so far. On the Grizzlies side, the main threat was James Posey, who played strong and hard defense, while scoring difficult baskets on the offensive side, mostly by driving in the lane and picking up fouls. The first quarter ended 27 - 24 for the Warriors.
The second period was close, as each team couldn't shake the other completely to gain a substantial lead. Pau Gasol picked up his game and started overpowering his man-markers in the key, ending the half with 15 points, most of which were scored in the second quarter, namely in the final 5 minutes. Richardson was still the maestro on offense for Golden State, and the sole reason that they managed to end the half leading 55 - 51, holding off on an impressive one minute long 7 - 2 Memphis run in the end.

Image
Vlade Divac was not of much use in the first half, but J-Rich's performance on offense more than made up for it...

The second half of this game was a copy of the first. Close game, with the lead exchanging hands on numerous occasion, tight D, and a plethora of unforced turnovers from both sides. It wasn't pretty, but it definitely was a nail-biting spectacle. In the third quarter, Richardson cooled off on his offensive production, and the mantle was assumed by Troy Murphy who was using his agility to shake off Memphis' big men, while bringing down the boards like crazy at the same time. The Griz were still counting on Pau to carry the load, but Golden State's great overall defense during those 12 minutes was excellent, allowing only 15 points in that time, thus ending the quarter 72 - 66 for the home side. In the final quarter, the contest opened up a bit with a couple of fast breaks breaking the monopoly of the slow tempo thus far. Both teams strangely enough switched to zonal defenses, which resulted in quite a number of outside attempts finding their way to the basket. J-Rich and Gasol were duking it out on their own up until the end, with Golden State always keeping a slight lead, up until the end. The final 2 minutes resulted in a free throw contest, but the Warriors showed composure to clinch this game 92 - 90.

Golden State played uncharacteristically strong and physical defense in the second half, resulting in aggravating the soft Grizzlies' forwards...

THE GAME: SACRAMENTO KINGS vs. GOLDEN STATE WARRIORS

Image

The first five minutes of this contest were the sole property of the home team,as guards Cuttino Mobley and Mike Bibby were running the fast breaks and bringing energy and hustle on defense. Through mid-quarter those two accompanied by Peja Stojakovic' execution from downtown brought the Warriors to the brink of collapse very early in the game. Thankfully for the visitors, Jason Richardson with the aid of many backups evened up the contest by the end of the quarter, with a score of 23 - 17. The second period saw the Kings on an offensive rampage led by backup point guard and former 6th player of the year Bobby Jackson. Jackson, even though undersized, managed to create many problems for the sluggish Warriors' defense from the SG position, while passing and executing brilliantly whenever his number was called. All Golden State could do before the buzzer was muster another late rally led by Troy Murphy this time, closing the gap to just 2 points. Half time score: 51 - 49

Image
Troy Murphy's extreme agility for his 6' 11" frame caused a lot of problems for Brad Miller and the Kings, helping the Warriors stay in touch with their opponents score-wise...

Same ol', same ol'. Once more the Kings were by far the stronger and more passionate team in the early minutes of the quarter, this time led offensively by passing big man Brad Miller and defensively by, surprisingly, Chris Webber. C-Webb was jumping all over the defensive boards and altered quite a few of his opponents' shots. Predictably, around mid-quarter the scenery changed, with an inspiring Murphy having a great run on offense taking advantage of the fact that Webber was on the bench for a breather. Troy absolutely outplayed every guy Rick adelman threw at him and was the sole reason that the score at the end of the third was 85 - 75 , and not worse. In the final period of this contest, J.Richardson and Murphy were the only offensive threats to the Kings, which resulted in Adelman's defensive schemes revolving around stopping these two alone. The Kings on the other hand, were altruistic on offense and willingly shared their scoring opportunities. Brad Miller was the spearhead for their triangle offense, producing points and passes necessary for the Kings to win this one, 113 - 106.

Brad Miller and Troy Murphy went into numerous head-to-head battles, and although Murphy scored more, Miller was the one getting the W...

THE GAME: GOLDEN STATE WARRIORS vs. DENVER NUGGETS

Image

Quarter number 1 was a Nuggets' affair mostly, with lanky center Marcus Camby dominating the paint defensively and scoring points on offense mostly due to his activity on the offensive boards. He was seconded by Kenyon Martin's back-to-the-basket offense and they only had to cope with Mike Dunleavy's occasional scoring outbursts. The quarter ended 19 - 24. In the second period, Denver strengthened its hold on Golden State even more, playing
excellent defense both inside and outside, occasionaly swithching to a 2-3 zone that strangled the Warrior's offense, since their 3s were far from dropping. Rodney White was trying to make a point to his former team and provided a spark from the bench, but him alone could not make a difference. Half-time score: 35 - 46.

Image
Carmelo Anthony was not the most dangerous player of the Nuggets in the first half, but took advantage of every little opportunity to score...

The third quarter saw the Warriors going in hard in order to make a comeback, and partially succeeding. Dunleavy hit his open jumpers, Jason Richardson looked to be recovering from a near-scoreless first half, and Elden Campbell was putting his size and strength to good use, backing down on opponents and positioning himself nicely for the loose balls. The Nuggets held on to the lead, though, aided by Camby's shot-swatting defensive presence and DerMarr Johnson's flawless execution from downtown to end the period leading 63 - 69. In the final quarter, it was time for the in-form Troy Murphy to take the mantle on the offensive end, scoring endlessly against every opponent the Nuggets assigned on him. His agility and quick first step proved crucial in him scoring 23 points to end the game. Rodney White was also having the best quarter of his short GS career, and it didn't take long for the Warriors to regain the lead after a long time being behind. The closing minutes of the quarter had the fans watching a fast-paced game that resulted in a free throw contest near the end. The Warriors showed confidence once more in the line and clinched this game 98 - 94.

Image
Rodney White seemingly had athing or two to prove to Denver and proved to be a vital cog in the GS machine in the final quarter...
