2005 MOCK DRAFT

Please note that this mock draft is based on finishing positions prior to the draft lottery, so I won't know the exact drafting positions of the lottery teams. Draft workouts will also influence my decisions on the potential draftees. Either way, here's how I reckon it will go.

LOTTERY

1. Charlotte: PG- Julian Iwanaka, 5'11", 171lbs, Asia [Projected 2nd]

The Bobcats are in desperate need of help at either guard spot, however this draft is devoid of much at the top end. Based on the fact they already have there frontcourt pretty solid, I think the Bobcats will take the No. 1 PG prospect, Asia's Julian Iwanaka. While he lacks superstar potential, Iwanaka is a Jamaal Tinsley type player with the potential to be as good as Mike Bibby. He will be able to step in right away and play, which is what the Bobcats will need from him.

2. Washington: C- Guy Dumars, 7'0", 289lbs, Southern Illinois [Projected 4th]

The Wizards are set on the wings (provided they can hold onto FA Larry Hughes), but could probably use some more depth at the C spot. That is why I think they would be wise to pick Southern Illinois product Guy Dumars, who at 7'0", 289lbs should be able to compete physically with just about everyone in the league. He's improving and would be a more sensible pick than adding yet another PF. His game reminds me of a mix between recent Cavs draft picks Z and Mihm.

3. New Jersey: PF- Priest Askins, 6'10", 247lbs, Chaminade [Projected 1st]

Chaminade alumni have been raving about this freshman sensation who ran away with the Freshman of the Year honours. Askins was an unknown out of high school and was only scouted by a couple of low level D1 colleges, but exploded onto the scene for Chaminade. Askins is projected as the best player in this draft, but positional needs push him down to No. 3, where the Nets will be happy to replace the departed Kenyon Martin. They will be hoping he's more like former No. 1 Chris Webber than Joe Smith.

4. Milwaukee: PF- Rajabu Ojigwe, 6'10", 224lbs, Georgia [Projected 3rd]

Bucks will take the best available talent and he happens to be a raw, athletic PF who the Bucks hope will turn into an improvement over Joe Smith. It will probably take him a couple of years to develop, but he should be pretty good.

5. LA Clippers: SG- Kojo Brackett, 6'1", 192lbs, Manhattan [Projected Top 10]

Clippers need a lot, but who can guess with the Clippers. So it should come as no surprise that the Clippers will select a 6'1" SG out of Manhattan. As a senior "Mojo" led Manhattan all the way to the Elite Eight. He's a proven winner and he's a big-time gunner and scorer. Don't know how he fits in playing behind Maggette though, maybe he'll see some time at PG. I'm guessing they hope they can convert him like to PG like Chauncey Billups was. He's more likely a Cuttino Mobley type SG. Either way, "Mojo" is a little bit of a stretch this high.

6. Philadelphia: PF- Demian Reirden, 6'8", 225lbs, Europe [Projected 5th]
The 76ers want to upgrade their PF spot then Europe's finest, Demian Reirden could be the go. But like their current PF's, I think Reirden is a little undersized as a PF. He plays an American game and is Europe's Kurt Thomas. He might have to play at SF though. Interesting pick of this tweener.

7. Utah: C- Mark Becker, 7'0", 273lbs, Europe [Projected Top 15]

Many thought Becker could crack the late lottery, but the Jazz has time to develop this 18 year old prodigy. He's big, raw and he doesn't mind playing D. Let's hope for the Utah's sake that he isn't another Jake Tsakalidis.

8. Indiana: SF- Kerry McKey, 6'8", 200lbs, Louisville [Projected Top 10]
Pacers are pretty strong with the return from suspension of the Brawlers. I think the Pacers will look to draft someone who can step in right away and compliment the rest of the Pacers. I see them drafting Kerry McKey (Derrick McKey's nephew) out of Louisville. McKey is good defensively and is an improving offensive player. A nice selection here for the Pacers.

9. Golden State: C- Ivan Hrkac, 6'10", 231lbs, Europe [Projected Top 10]
It's obvious that the Warriors will go big and where else do you look for big but Europe. Hrkac will be a good replacement for the possibly departing Dale Davis and Clifford Robinson. Hrkac has a nice offensive arsenal and reminds me of a younger Mehmet Okur. He's a little small for C, and is more likely a PF in the NBA, but he should be fine.

10. Toronto: PF- Dante Oliver, Tennessee-Chattanooga [Projected Top 10]
The Raptors are a little thin up front so I can see them drafting a workhorse like Dante Oliver. He's tough-minded, a defensive dynamo and has drawn to Xavier product Brian Grant. It can't hurt the Raptors to draft someone with some balls, and balls is what Oliver will provide. At worst, he's a nice backup for Bosh, at best he can play beside Bosh and develop into one of the league's hard men.

11. Seattle: SG- Ashon Camby, Tennessee [Projected Top 15]

The Sonics need insurance for the possible departure of All-Star Ray Allen. They don't get much better than Ashon Camby, who could have a similar impact to Michael Finley had out of college. Camby is the best player to come out of Tennessee since Allan Houston was drafted by the Pistons.

12. Portland: SG- Cothran Tyson, 6'1", 228lbs, Duke [Projected Top 10]
The Blazers want a player from a good college background, then they don't come much better than Duke SG Cothran Tyson. Tyson was a key member of the Duke Blue Devils Final Four run, and he plays much bigger than his height. He's got similar game to Ben Gordon, but is more likely a Fred Jones type player at the next level.

13. Phoenix: C- Jamie Kjellberg, 6'11", 254lbs, Europe [Projected Top 15]
Suns are as always, in desperate need of big men. They could draft 18 year old European prospect, Jamie Kjellberg. He's raw and a bit of a project, but is worth the risk for the improving Suns as they look to push for a playoff berth next season.

14. Denver: PG- Joshua Fowles, 6'2", 180lbs, Iowa [Projected Top 15]
The Nuggets want a 3rd PG, and the Hawkeyes' junior Joshua Fowles more than ably fill that role. He's got nice potential and could develop into a starting PG. It's more likely he'll have a long career as a backup PG.
------------------------
15. Orlando: SG- Walt Lue, 6'6", 233lbs Michigan State [Projected Top 20]
16. Chicago: PF- Will Morris, 6'10", 264lbs, UNLV [Projected Top 15]
17. Atlanta: PG- Muhammed Cage, 6'0", 205lbs, UNLV [Projected Top 20]
18. New York: PG- Vin Gill, 6'0", 210lbs, Pittsburgh [Projected Top 20]
19. Miami: SF- Dominic Hunter, 6'8", 236lbs, Yale [Projected Top 20]
20. Cleveland: C- Khamidi Adams, 7'0", 291lbs, Temple [Projected Top 20]
21. Boston: PF- Marcel Abraham, 6'9", 256lbs, Portland State [Projected Late 1st Rd]
22. Minnesota: SG- Dean Friedman, 6'6", 214lbs, UNLV [Projected Top 15]
23. New Orleans: C- Kashka Sturm, Europe [Projected Top 20]
24. LA Lakers (36-22) C- Ade Recasner, Lafeyette [Projected Late 1st Rd]
25. Houston (37-21) PG- Ferdinand Toomey, 6'0", 171lbs, Utah [Projected Late 1st Rd]
26. Dallas (37-21) SG- Lucious McCarty, 6'3", 193lbs, UNLV [Projected Late 1st Rd]
27. Sacramento (38-20) SF- Ben Baron, 6'7", 245lbs, Alabama [Projected Late 1st Rd]
28. Detroit (39-19) SG- Zach Mayfield, 6'5", 230lbs, UCLA [Projected Late 1st Rd]
29. San Antonio (41-17) C- Xavier Radwan, 7'1", 292lbs, Africa [Projected Late 1st Rd]
30. Memphis (41-17) PF- Tarmo Renberg, 6'9", Europe [Projected Early 2nd Rd]

On The Bubble:

PG- DeJuan Toure, 6'2", 180lbs, Alabama [Projected Late 1st Rd]
C- Wyatt Fairchild, 6'11", 255lbs, Northwestern [Projected Late 1st Rd]
PF- Al Tyler, UNLV [Projected Early 2nd Rd]
PG- Baha Sandler, 6'0", 215lbs, Georgia [Projected Early 2nd Rd]
SG- Jamie Nakamura, 6'3", 208lbs, Europe [Projected Early 2nd Rd]

NB: I forgot to add in Dominic Lawson (a projected Top 10 pick). He'll go somewhere in the 8-13 range, which pushes all other PF prospects back a little bit. Too much effort to change it all just for him.

Interesing fact - as many as 5 UNLV Runnin' Rebels could be picked in the 1st Round (PF- Will Morris, PG- Muhammed Cage, SG- Dean Friedman, SG- Lucious McCarty, PF- Al Tyler).

Okay people, I'm off to start my off-season, I will recap it over next few days before starting my 2nd season. I will be implementing a 75% limit on my 2nd year salary cap just as in real life for the Bobcats.

Cheers,
X

2005 OFF-SEASON COVERAGE

Okay, I completed the off-season and it didn't quite go as planned. It involved some very interesting moves, free agency disappointment and other things that led to a pretty enthralling off-season. I will recap a bit of the off-season each day. Maybe draft lottery, retirees and free agents resigning period. Possibly draft coverage tomorrow. Then the rest of free agency and trade period when I get time.

Note that I'm implementing a self-imposed salary cap limit of 75% of the $44.34m total cap, which means I can only spend up to $33.26m. I'm using this cap for the season due to the Bobcats only having a salary cap equal to 75% of the cap limit as will happen in real life. I can go over that figure if I'm signing someone to a minimum contract or making a trade where salaries match up to within 10% of each other.

RETIREES

As expected, Steve "Smitty" Smith retired from the NBA after 13 seasons. His career highlights include winning the NBA Citizenship Award (1998), being named to the All-Rookie 1st Team (1992), a 1-time All-Star (1998), and a member of the USA National Team/Dream Team 2 (1994).

Image
Image

The Bobcats decided against retiring Steve Smith's jersey due to him only playing one season with the franchise. Now on to the rest of the retirees.

Image
Image

This year's retirees is a very deep and talented group that have contributed so much in their many years in the NBA. The name that sticks out is probably one of the best PF's to ever play the game, Karl "The Mailman" Malone. He's joined by future Hall of Famers Gary Payton and Reggie Miller. One of the greatest defensive big men of All-Time, Dikembe "Retardo" Mutombo, also is hanging up the high tops. The rest of the lists includes many other good and serviceable players over their times in the league. You'll be missed guys. :applaud:

Holy bejeebiz, I just noticed my view count has eclipsed 2000. I hadn't even realised that I had broken 1000 views till then. It's sweet as, even if a quarter of the views are from me editing it. Either way, back to the off-season coverage

2005 OFF-SEASON COVERAGE

Forgot to mention I got offered the Wizards' GM job and some perks. It would have been an easy way to get Larry Hughes.

Ahh well, I ain't here for a walk in the park. So I turned down the offer.

DRAFT LOTTERY

With a 1 in 4 chance of winning the No. 1 draft pick in the 2005 NBA Draft Lottery, hopes were high for the expansion Charlotte Bobcats. See below for the results of this year's draft lottery.

Image

Congratulations to the Washington Wizards who won the 2005 NBA Draft Lottery, and therefore have earnt the right to select 1st in the upcoming draft.

Biggest Winner: Seattle Supersonics who moved from No. 11 right up to No. 3. This move up the draft board has created great celebrations and excitement from the Sonics' faithful back in Seattle.

Biggest Loser: Charlotte Bobcats who had the most lotto balls and highest odds at the No. 1 draft pick. Unfortunately the gods were not shining on the expansion Bobcats as the worst possible scenario happened, as the team fell to the No. 4 selection in the upcoming draft.

The Bucks also moved up from No. 4 to No. 2 and the Nets fell from No. 3 to No. 5. The LA Clippers, Philadelphia, Utah, Indiana, Golden State and Toronto all fell 1 draft position due to the rise of the Sonics.

I gotta cruise to bed as got work tomorrow (N)

I will post the free agency re-signings and pre-draft workouts. At least one NLSC member will find one of the pre-draft workouts very interesting. This is because one of the draft prospect that I bring in is a dead ringer/look-alike for a NLSC member. It really did spin me out a bit. And no, I did not edit in a cyberface or anything like that.

Either way, check in tomorrow and you'll find out.

yeah, I got screwed....when I saw it I was like shit, I'm probably not gonna get my guy....ahh well, things happen for a reason I guess....and yep, I got your email, send through cyberface, etc....

yeah thanks, I do what I can....I see all these other great dynasties with their wicked mag formats, or the great depth of Micchy's, or Cocobee's styles of Rochester and Louisville, plus many others....I'm not gonna out do or try to beat out these dynasties with game recaps or pics as I will lose....I noticed no one else had big off-season coverage, and I figure since I would like to look back after a few season and see what happens, I though hell yeah....

it's already helping me to learn random players as I know about 40-45 of the draftees, and hopefully will continue on this path....

either way, glad you like it.....

2005 OFF-SEASON COVERAGE

PRE-DRAFT WORKOUTS

With the No. 4 and 30 picks in the upcoming draft the Charlotte Bobcats brought in 7 prospects (5 1st Rd prospects and 2 2nd Rd prospects) to see how they fare against current players.

WORKOUT 1 - ANDREW WATSON (aka The X), 6'2", 225lbs, Australia (Projected 2nd Rd pick)

New Zealand born SG prospect Andrew Watson burst onto the scene as stories leaked of him beating his English mate, Jamie Nakamura in a game of H-O-R-S-E. As more leaked out on Watson, also known as X by his friends and family, his hype grew from a virtual unknown to a legitimate draft prospect. On the heels of this hype, Watson did not hesitate to throw his name in the draft pool as it was discovered he still had one year of college basketball eligibility left. All that is known about Watson is that he can shoot, so the Bobcats have decided to bring him in to see if he worth a punt with their early 2nd Rd pick (No. 30).

The coaching staff have decided to match up Watson against the 6'6" Bernard Robinson to try to see if he can fare up against bigger SG's. The matchup started with Watson coming out strong and taking Bernard Robinson to the rack, as he showed an ability to take it to the rack.

Image
Watson shows his more than a one-trick pony

However it wasn't the offensive game that impressed the Bobcats, it was the unexpected toughness on the defensive end. Watson almost doubled Robinson's rebound tally, which was a huge feat for a guard giving up at least 4 inches in height, as well as playing tough D on Robinson.

Image
Look at the shock on Bernard Robinson's face as X beats him to another board

Image
No easy baskets today scrub boy

Image
Who is this guy and where did he come from?!?

But in the end if Watson wants to make it in the NBA he'll have to be able to be a dead-eye gunner.

Image
X shows off the fadeaway that he has been working on the last couple of months

Image
Watson drills a 30 footer to win the matchup 22-20

It must be said that Watson needs a lot of work on his ball handling skills as he might be required to man the PG at the next level. At times he had to fade on his shot to get it off against the bigger defender. Overall, Andrew Watson has definitely improved his stock and is a shot to move up to the top of the 2nd Rd, depending on how the rest of the draft pans out.

WORKOUT 2 - JULIAN IWANAKA (who I now dub Honor-ish), 5'11", 171lbs, Yokohomo, Japan (Projected No. 2 pick)

First things first, is this guy a relation to Honor Glow?!? A long lost brother perhaps?!? Check the evidence:

ImageImage
Julian Iwanaka dukes out Eddie House for layin (above left), however he has a striking resemblence to Livedynasty founder Honor Glow's avatar (above left)

I promise you guys that I have not put a cyberface in the game. It was a huge spin-out when I got a close-up look of Iwanaka, or Honor-ish. Either way, once I got over that I had a workout to complete.

Honor Glow, sorry, I mean Julian Iwanaka was projected to go No. 1 to the Bobcats in the Mock Draft. With the Bobcats only securing the No. 4 pick, it is unlikely that Iwanaka will be available by the time they pick. Either way, anything can happen in the draft so he has been brought in.

Iwanaka was matched up with Eddie House, and whilst he had some problems defensively with House, Iwanaka's explosive skills on the ball were enough to impress the PG-starved Bobcats. He's easily the No. 1 PG in the draft and a can't-miss prospect.

Image
Honor-ish showed the ability to pull up and drill the mid-range jumper

WORKOUT 3 - PRIEST ASKINS , 6'10", 247lbs, Chaminade (Projected No. 1 pick)

Once they fell to No. 4 in the draft, Bobcats staff thought that the projected top pick, Priest Askins, would snub them. However, Askins proved that his modest college background meant he would go against his agent's advice and workout for the 'Cats. Well he should have listened to his agent as his workout was terrible, and IMHO, the worst out of the 5 lottery talents that they brought in.

With no contract into the 2005/06 season, Lawrence Funderburke had something to prove in his matchup against the No. 1 draft pick. Well he sure proved he's still got gas left in the tank as he dominated Askins on both offense and defense.

Image
Funderburke slaps away a weak attempt by Askins

Whilst he was unimpressive and did nothing to endear himself to Bobcats' staff, he did show flashes of potential that could get him taken at the top of the 1st Rd.

Image
Askins showed his trademark 2-handed throwdown

Image
Kid obviously has an affliction to weak-ass shots

Final verdict on Priest Askins, JOE SMITH reincarnated. Sorry Priest, you're solid, just not special IMHO.

WORKOUT 4 - Guy Dumars, 7'0", 289lbs, Southern Illinois (Projected No. 4 pick)

Guy Dumars is the top big man prospect in the draft and matched up very well against Primo Brezec. Brezec had serious trouble backing the stronger Dumars down. Meanwhile on the offensive end, Dumars used it's surprisingly agile frame to get to the rim and throw it down hard.

Image
Dumars throws down a nice dunk

Image
Dumars shows his athleticism as he throws down a sick dunk

Guy Dumars is definitely on the Bobcats' radar and figures to be a Top 5 pick at worst in the coming draft. You can't teach big after all.

WORKOUT 5 - RAJABU OJIGWE, 6'10", 224lbs, Georgia (Projected No. 3 pick)

I have to admit based on scouting reports, I didn't really think much of Ojigwe, however he showed me that the one year at Georgia really helped his game. Ojigwe showed nice athleticism and a good 1st step as he regularly got by Melvin Ely, and had a decent touch around the basket.

Image
The kid was quick to recognise an advantage as he continued to face him up and take him to the hole

Image
Ojigwe glides in for a one-handed jam

Image
He can also get nasty around the rim if needs be

If I had to give Ojigwe an NBA comparison, it would now be Drew Gooden without a jumper. He needs to get stronger and work on that spot-up J and he'll be fine.

WORKOUT 6 - Ashon Camby, 6'5", 217lbs, Tennessee (Projected Top 15 pick)

Whilst he doesn't figure to be a top 5 pick (he's a projected late lottery selection), Ashon Camby has impressed the Bobcats enough to possibly trade down to grab him if they can't get what they want with their 1st Rd pick.

Camby was matched up against Bernard Robinson and really did get the better of him on the matchup. He looked like a young Michael Finley out of Wisconsin, who was snapped up by the Phoenix Suns and proved to be a steal of the draft. I think that Ashon Camby will be the steal of the draft when people look back in a few seasons time.

Image
Camby makes it looks easy

Camby, much like Finley in his younger days, is a fine athletic specimen with a very poor jumpshot that needs a lot of work. If he works hard on it, he could be a star in this league. Ashon Camby should go somewhere in the 8-13 range.

WORKOUT 7 - Lucious McCarty, 6'3", 193lbs, UNLV (Projected Late 1st Rd pick)

Lucious McCarty impressed all as a member of the NCAA champion, UNLV Runnin' Rebels. Can he impress without the rest of the modern day Fab Five?!? That was the question Bobcats staff were asking themselves before Walter's little bro arrived in NC. It didn't take long for them to realise that Lucious McCarty is not a 1st Rd pick, and is not a good fit for the Bobcats.

The problem that McCarty had was although he has nice form on his jumper, I just don't think he's got the ability to create his own shot at the next level as former lottery pick Courtney Alexander dominated him on both ends of the court. The one other aspect of McCarty's game I couldn't argue with was his ups, as he showed a dunking repretoire similar to that of his older bro Walter McCarty, only he's 7 inches shorter.

Image
He can shoot, but can he get his shot off?!?

Image
Flashy dunks can only get you so far, just ask Harold Miner

That is how the pre-draft workouts went. It gave me a clearer idea of the 2 players I wanted (Iwanaka or Dumars). It also made the picture more murky if these 2 players were gone by the time I picked. Please feel free to make comments, especially on the similarities of Iwanaka and the NLSC's own Honor Glow.

2005 OFF-SEASON COVERAGE

RE-SIGNING BOBCATS FREE AGENTS

1st ORDER OF BUSINESS - Re-sign Gerald Wallace

The 1st order of business for the 'Cats this off-season was to re-sign improving swingman Gerald Wallace to a long-term deal. After minor negotiations, I believe the Bobcats got the bargain of the off-season as they managed to secure the services of Wallace for a meagre 6 year at between $19-20 million contract. What was his agent thinking?!? I would have paid close to double that.

Image
Image

2nd ORDER OF BUSINESS - Re-sign Jason Kapono

Jason Kapono played a key role off the bench for Charlotte in his only his 2nd year in the league, and provided valuable 3pt shooting that spread the floor which help bigmen like Okafor to dominate.

The process of trying to re-sign Jason Kapono took the whole re-signing period. I tried to work with Jason's agent and find something he liked. At times I thought it was as good as a done deal, but it just could never get done. Kapono wanted a 7 year deal, at about $2.5 million a season. I wasn't willing to invest in such a long deal with a one-dimensional player. At first, I tried to work 1 and 2 year deals to no avail. Then I concentrated on 3 and 4 year deals, at roughly about $2-2.2 million a season. It always seemed close but it never got done. Now we'll have to wait till the free agency period to see if something can get done there.

Image

3rd ORDER OF BUSINESS - Re-sign Eddie House

Eddie House was very impressive in the latter part of the season and I think I owed it to him to make him an offer. House wanted a long term deal and I just wasn't going to give it to a 3rd string PG. I was offering him only 1 and 2 year deals, at between $1.5-$1.75 million which I thought were very generous considering the circumstances. Eddie and his agent got insulted and shut off negotiations. Good riddance Eddie, good luck in Siberia.

4th ORDER OF BUSINESS - Try to re-sign Keith Bogans on the cheap

I never really had any intention of paying Keith Bogans the $3+ million a season he was asking over 6 seasons. I just wanted to see if I can sign him for maybe a 2 year, $5 million deal as he would be good trade bait. It comes as no surprise that he wasn't happy with what I was offering. No hard feelings, I didn't want you anyway. Show us your birdie score of 3.70 as a starting SG. :cheeky:

That's the re-signing of FA's period over, with the Cats only resigning Gerald Wallace, although there's still plenty of time and cash to get it done.

I'll post NBA Draft tomorrow, and then probably the rest of it in a couple of days.

again nice off-season recap.
yeah Iwanaka looks like honor
well any idea if wizards re-signs hughes.
you definitely need a decent shooting guard since you were unable to re-sign kapono and bogans and smith retirement.

Nice update dude, good to see youwere ruthless with the resigning. I think you deffinately have to draft a guard, if worst comes to worse you can just sign a FA big man during the season, but lowly rated guards dont seem to be able to hold their own as low rated fowards.

I look foward to the next update

cheers everyone....well as I said earlier, the off-season took some surprise turns and did not go as expected....

micchy, hmm...larry hughes....well I'm posting draft now but as for free agency, I'll post it in a day's time I guess if I run out of time tonight....

match, gotta be ruthless with scrubs :x Keith Bogans brought nothing to the table and he's whining....House is a scrub.....whilst I wanted to re-sign Kapono, I didn't want to stretch that 75% of the cap too far on him....

draft to follow ASAP

Yeah, out of all the times I have played with the Cavs and Bobcats, I have either been the worst or second worst, and never got Number 1 Pick

2005 OFF-SEASON COVERAGE

2005 NBA DRAFT

Welcome to the 2005 NBA Draft, where losers sometimes becomes winner, but more often than not remain losers. Without further ado let's cross direct to the Draft as David Stern is about to read out the 1st pick in the 2005 NBA Draft.

1st ROUND

Stern: “With the 1st pick in the 2005 NBA Draft, the Washington Wizards select Priest Askins of Chaminade University.”

1. Washington: PF- Priest Askins, Chaminade, (Rating = 65 [69 after off-season])

Image

NLSC: “Whoa, what were the Wizards thinking by picking the next Joe Smith?!? Okay, so Priest Askins is a bit of a man among boys, but the Wizards already have Antawn Jamison and Kwame Brown at PF, with Etan Thomas also playing minutes at PF when healthy. This pick is an ominous sign for former No. 1 draft pick Kwame Brown’s future in Washington, as he is a free agent and it seems clear the Wizards’ future does not involve anymore Kwame Brown. But I don’t get it, replace one bust with another, go figure. One thing is for sure, he won’t be happy playing behind Jamison.”

Stern: “With the 2nd pick in the 2005 NBA Draft, the Milwaukee Bucks select Demian Reirden of Beirut, Lebanon.”

2. Milwaukee: PF- Demian Reirden, Beirut (Lebanon), (Rating = 56 [61])

NLSC: “What’s going on here guys?!? Where did these GM’s plant there brains?!? The Bucks were in desperate need of quality big men and Guy Dumars is definitely one of them. The verdict on Demian Reirden is still out. We know that he is a hard-working, bruising PF who shouldn’t have any difficulties finding minutes at the PF position. He might not start right away, but don’t be surprised to see if pressing Joe Smith for the starting spot soon.”

Stern: “With the 3rd pick in the 2005 NBA Draft, the Seattle Supersonics select Julian Nwanaka of Yokohoma, Japan.”

3. Seattle: PG- Julian Iwanaka, Yokohoma (Japan), (Rating = 58 [65])

Image

NLSC: “Iwanaka’s gonna be a star PG in this league, no doubt. But you have to be wondering if Guy Dumars would have been a better pick to dethrone Jerome James in the middle. Dumars would have been the perfect fit for the running ‘Supes. With Luke Ridnour and Antonio Daniels (if he is re-signed) manning the point, you have to wonder where this Japanese sensation fits into the picture. I have no doubt he’ll find a way to get in the frame.”

Stern: “With the 4th pick in the 2005 NBA Draft, the Charlotte Bobcats select Guy Dumars of Southern Illinois.”

4. Charlotte: C- Guy Dumars, Southern Illinois (Rating = 55 [59])

Image

NLSC: “For the second straight year the Charlotte Bobcats make a sensible pick as they pick college senior Guy Dumars. Whilst the Bobcats narrowly missed out on their guy, Honor-ism (Iwanaka), Dumars is a good second prize. Dumars is an athletic big man who should combine with Okafor, Ely and Brezec to form an improving, young, frontcourt. Expect nice things from this kid.”

Stern: “With the 5th pick in the 2005 NBA Draft, the New Jersey Nets select Kerry McKey of the University of Louisville.”

5. New Jersey: SF- Kerry McKey, Louisville (Rating = 57 [61])

NLSC: “Hmmm, Kerry McKey’s solid and all but is a bit of a stretch this high. Compounding this issue is that the Nets already have an All-Star SF in Richard Jefferson, and the fact that this is a PF-strong draft and guess what; the Nets are still looking for a PF to replace All-Star Kenyon Martin. I expected Ojigwe to go here, or possibly Lawson or Oliver. I think McKey can develop into a solid starter and a top defender, but he really needs to work on his shot, as at the moment, he is horrid from the field.”

Stern: “With the 6th pick in the 2005 NBA Draft, the Los Angeles Clippers select Dominic Lawson.”

6. LA Clippers: PF- Dominic Lawson, (Rating = 56 [59])

NLSC: “Go figure, the Clippers pick a poor man’s Elton Brand. Ahh well, not more needs to be said here.”

Stern: “With the 7th pick in the 2005 NBA Draft, the Philadelphia 76ers select Joshua Fowles of University of Iowa.”

7. Philadelphia: PG- Joshua Fowles, Iowa (Rating = 59 [64])

NLSC: “The first big mover of the night as the late lottery bubble pick has moved up to the 76ers at 7. Word has it that the 76ers fell in love with Fowles the minute he walked in the door and he is slated as their PG of the future. Perhaps we might see Allen Iverson moved back to the SG spot. Can’t fault them picking a guy with the potential of Fowles, although a safer pick would have been a PF like Ojigwe.”

Stern: “With the 8th pick in the 2005 NBA Draft, the Utah Jazz select Rajabu Ojigwe of Alabama University.”

8. Utah: PF- Rajabu Ojigwe, Georgia, (Rating = 53 [55])

Image

NLSC: “I can’t believe how far Ojigwe fell. He was a projected top 3 pick, but doubts over his potential have played into the favour of the Jazz who picked up a nice talent with this pick. It was either going to be Ojigwe or Hrkac with this pick, and I’m sure the Jazz won’t have any second thoughts about this pick.”

Stern: “With the 9th pick in the 2005 NBA Draft, the Indiana Pacers select Ivan Hrkac of Istanbul, Turkey.”

9. Indiana: C- Ivan Hrkac, Istanbul (Turkey), (Rating = 56 [60])

NLSC: “The Pacers go big with this pick and it could turn out to be a wise choice if Hrkac develops like many think he will.”

Stern: “With the 10th pick in the 2005 NBA Draft, the Golden State Warriors select Cothran Tyson of Duke University.”

10. Golden State: SG- Cothran Tyson, Duke (Rating = 54 [58])

NLSC: “Another strange pick as the Warriors go with a small SG who’s not a great shooter. Tyson will not find it easy to re-trace the path led by former Warriors’ draft pick Gilbert Arenas. I really think the Warriors would have been better served going big with either Dante Oliver or Mark Becker. The retirements of Dale Davis and Clifford Robinson have really hurt their depth upfront and they could have used all the help they could get. Meanwhile, Tyson won’t get many minutes behind J-Rich. Nice pick Mullin.”

Stern: “With the 11th pick in the 2005 NBA Draft, the Toronto Raptors select Kojo Brackett of Manhattan University.”
11. Toronto: SG- Kojo Brackett, Manhattan (Rating = 53 [57])

NLSC: “Mojo fell a bit more than I thought he might, but it comes as no surprise as not too many scouts fall in love with 6’1” SG’s. Once again, I feel that the Raptors would have been better served going big, maybe Dante Oliver to add a bit of muscle while backing up Chris Bosh.”

Stern: “With the 12th pick in the 2005 NBA Draft, the Portland Trailblazers select Dante Oliver of the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga.”

12. Portland: PF- Dante Oliver, Tennessee-Chattanooga (Rating = 54 [57])

NLSC: “Shoot me now because this is getting ludicrous. Portland need a SG for the future, check. SG also needs to be a good defender, check. Athleticism would be nice, check. Blazers pick Ashon Camby out of Tennessee right?!? Wrong!!! Blazers pick a PF to back up not only Zach Randolph, but also Shareef Abdur-Rahim. I wonder if a trade is in the works.”

Stern: “With the 13th pick in the 2005 NBA Draft, the Phoenix Suns select Ashon Camby of University of Tennessee.”
13. Phoenix: SG- Ashon Camby, Tennessee, (Rating = 53 [57])

Image

NLSC: “Go figure, the Suns pick up another great draft pick. The same guys who pick Steve Nash, Michael Finley and Shawn Marion in the middle of the 1st Round in previous drafts, has picked up another diamond in the rough. As mentioned above Camby is gonna be good. He reminds me so much of a young Michael Finley it’s crazy. Suns are laughing all the way back to the post-season.”

Stern: “With the 14th pick in the 2005 NBA Draft, the Denver Nuggets select Mark Becker out of Zagreb, Croatia.”

14. Denver: C- Mark Becker, Zagreb (Croatia), (Rating = 54 [58])

NLSC: “This is a quality pick by the Nuggets. I really am surprised a talented big man like Becker fell into the Nuggets’ laps. Becker is definitely an upgrade over Francisco Elson on the Nuggets’ bench, and with Marcus Camby’s durability always in question, I think Becker will get every opportunity to shine in the Rockies.”

Stern: “With the 15th pick in the 2005 NBA Draft, the Orlando Magic select Will Morris out of the University of Nevada-Las Vegas.”

15. Orlando: PF- Will Morris, UNLV, (Rating = 51[54])

NLSC: “This was a very solid pick and Morris should be a nice backup off the bench for the Magic.”

Stern: “With the 16th pick in the 2005 NBA Draft, the Chicago Bulls select Dominic Hunter out of Yale University.”

16. Chicago: SF- Dominic Hunter, Yale, (Rating = 54[57])

NLSC: “Poor, poor, poor pick. Bulls already have talented SF’s in Deng and Nocioni and didn’t need another one. SG’s Walt Lue or Dean Friedman, or centre Khamidi Adams would have been better picks at this spot. It’s not that Hunter is bad, because he’s not, he’s actually a pretty nice player, it’s just it doesn’t fit the Bulls’ needs.”

Stern: “With the 17th pick in the 2005 NBA Draft, the Atlanta Hawks select Khamidi Adams of Temple University.”

17. Atlanta: C- Khamidi Adams, Temple, (Rating = 55[58])

NLSC: “The Hawks got a bruiser in Adams. With the Hawks’ lack of depth in the middle this was the perfect selection at this point of the draft. Well done.”

Stern: “With the 18th pick in the 2005 NBA Draft, the New York Knickerbockers select Walt Lue of Michigan State University.”

18. New York: SG- Walt Lue, Michigan State, (Rating = 53[56])

NLSC: “Once bitten, twice shy. That seemed to be the Knicks’ motto of the night. With painful memories of the Frederic Weis pick, the Knicks decided against picking talented Euro big men, Jamie Kjellberg and Kashka Sturm. They instead went with Walt Lue who appears to be the third SG in the rotation at the moment.”

Stern: “With the 19th pick in the 2005 NBA Draft, Miami Heat select Dean Friedman of the University of Nevada-Las Vegas.”

19. Miami: SG- Dean Friedman, UNLV, (Rating = 53[57])

NLSC: “Eddie Jones doesn’t seem to be a long-term answer so the Heat is banking on this Runnin’ Rebel running up a storm for the Heat. I don’t think he’s star material, but he could turn into a nice role player in the league.”

Stern: “With the 20th pick in the 2005 NBA Draft, the Cleveland Cavaliers select Jamie Kjellberg of Malaga, Spain.”

20. Cleveland: C- Jamie Kjellberg, Malaga (Spain), (Rating = 50[53])

NLSC: “Kjellberg was projected to go in the top 15 in the draft. As an 18 year old he is a huge project, but worthy of a shot to develop behind big Z.”

Stern: “With the 21st pick in the 2005 NBA Draft, the Boston Celtics select Vin Gill of Pittsburgh University.”

21. Boston: PG- Vin Gill, Pittsburgh, (Rating = 51[55])

NLSC: “With the retirement of the Glove, Gary Payton, this is a very sensible pick at this point.”

Stern: “With the 22nd pick in the 2005 NBA Draft, the Minnesota Timberwolves select Kashka Sturm of Helsinki, Finland.”

22. Minnesota: C- Kashka Sturm, Helsinki (Finland), (Rating = 52[56])

NLSC: “Kandi Man is a failure so the T’wolves had no choice to take a punt on this Finnish giant.”

Stern: “With the 23rd pick in the 2005 NBA Draft, the New Orleans Hornets select Muhammed Cage of the University of Nevada-Las Vegas.”

23. New Orleans: PG- Muhammed Cage, UNLV, (Rating = 49 [54])

NLSC: “Cage becomes the third Runnin’ Rebel to be taken the 1st Round. With Darrell Armstrong retiring it makes sense for the Hornets to bring in a PG, and a good one he is.”

Stern: “With the 24th pick in the 2005 NBA Draft, the Los Angeles Lakers select Marcel Abraham of Portland State University.”

24. LA Lakers: PF- Marcel Abraham, Portland State, (Rating = 51[54])

NLSC: “The Lakers were hoping either PG’s Vin Gill or Muhammed Cage were available. Unfortunately both were gone by the times the Lakers picked. They took PF Abraham who should provide insurance in the frontcourt.”

Stern: “With the 25th pick in the 2005 NBA Draft, the Houston Rockets select Ben Baron of Alabama University.”

25. Houston: SF- Ben Baron, Alabama, (Rating = 54[57])

NLSC: “It was either gonna be a PG or SF taken with this pick, and it came as no surprise that the Rockets picked up the third best SF in the draft in Baron.”

Stern: “With the 26th pick in the 2005 NBA Draft, the Dallas Mavericks select DeJuan Toure of Alabama University.”

26. Dallas: PG- DeJuan Toure, Alabama, (Rating = 52[56])

NLSC: “Back-to-back picks for the Tide as DeJuan Toure is snapped up by the Mavs with their 1st Round pick. Toure will be the 3rd PG behind Jason Terry and the rapidly improving Devin Harris.”

Stern: “With the 27th pick in the 2005 NBA Draft, the Sacramento Kings select Ignatius Podein out of Pardubice, Czech Republic.”

27. Sacramento: PF- Ignatius Podein, Pardubice (Czech Republic), (Rating = 52[55])

NLSC: “Who?!? Where’s he from?!? Although I won’t doubt the Kings given their knack for picking up top European talent.”

Stern: “With the 28th pick in the 2005 NBA Draft, the Detroit Pistons select Abasi Cato out of Gorgrial, Sudan.”

28. Detroit: C- Abasi Cato, Gorgrial (Sudan), (Rating = 53[56])

NLSC: “Clearly a huge project. Almost no chance of another Ben Wallace with this pick.”

Stern: “With the 29th pick in the 2005 NBA Draft, the San Antonio Spurs select Tanner Fairchild of Congo.”

29. San Antonio: SG- Tanner Fairchild, Congo, (Rating = 50[55])

NLSC: “Congo?!? That’s where those big monkeys are from, right?!?”

Stern: “The Memphis Grizzlies have decided to forego selecting with the 30th pick in the NBA Draft.”

30. Memphis: Forfeits draft pick

NLSC: “This was one of the smartest picks in the draft. The Grizzlies realized that they could not draft any player who could improve on their deep roster, so they didn’t give up a guaranteed 3-year deal on someone who wouldn’t play.”

2nd ROUND

David Stern hands the podium to VC Russ Granik to finish off proceedings.

31. Charlotte: SG- Andrew Watson, Christchurch (New Zealand), (Rating = 48[51])

Image

32. Washington: PF- Dominic Kukoc, Rovno (Ukraine), (Rating = 51[54])
33. New Jersey: SG- Zach Mayfield, UCLA, (Rating = 50[54])
34. Milwaukee: PF- Al Tyler, UNLV, (Rating = 50[53])
35. LA Clippers: SG- Lucious McCarty, UNLV, (Rating = 49[55])

Image

36. Philadelphia: SG- Haji Lo, Seoul (Korea), (Rating = 53[57])
37. Utah: C- Xavier Radwan, Edda (Cameroon), (Rating = 50[52])
38. Indiana: C- Ade Recasner, Lafeyette, (Rating = 48[51])
39. Golden State: SG- Bandele Williams, UConn, (Rating = 51[55])
40. Toronto: PG- Ferdinand Toomey, Utah, (Rating = 48[52])
41. Seattle: C- Wyatt Fairchild, Northwestern, (Rating = 48[51])
42. Portland: PF- Lorenzo Stewart, Bowling Green, (Rating = 50[54])
43. Orlando: PF- Augustus Sorrell, Michigan, (Rating = 49[52])
44. Chicago: SG- Jamie Nakamura, London (England), (Rating = 52[57])
45. Phoenix: PF- Tarmo Renberg, Panathinaikos (Greece), (Rating = 48[51]
46. Atlanta: PG- Baha Sandler, Georgia, (Rating = 48[52])
47. New York: SG- Roshown Royal, Middle Tennessee State, (Rating = 48[52])
48. Miami: C- Eduardo Ivkovic, Munich (Germany), (Rating = 50[53])
49. Denver: SG- Remus McCarty, DePaul, (Rating = 47[51])
50. Cleveland: SF- Moses Sydor, Dublin (Ireland), (Rating = 50[54])
51. Boston: PF- Olumide Wiggins, Tennessee-Chattanooga, (Rating = 49[52])
52. Minnesota: PG- Noah Tomic, Bruges (Belgium), (Rating = 49[52])
53. New Orleans: PF- Anthony Smart, Fayetteville, (Rating = 49[52])
54. LA Lakers: SG- Idowu Barrett, Louisiana Tech, (Rating = 48[52])
55. Houston: PG- Rodrick Lindsey, UCLA, (Rating = 50[54])
56. Dallas: C- J.D. Marshall, Johannesburg (South Africa), (Rating = 48[50])
57. Sacramento: PF- Kosi Rayner, Indiana, (Rating = 50[54])
58. Detroit: PG- Jacob Sweet, Michigan, (Rating = 48[51])
59. San Antonio: C- Rodney Chin, Auckland (New Zealand), (Rating = 49[51])
60. Memphis: Forfeits draft pick

Well that concludes the 2005 Draft. To recap, the Bobcats ended up drafting C- Guy Dumars (#4) and SG- Andrew Watson (#31).

Let me know what you think of the draft coverage. Next season I'll have some college players (Bogut, Warrick etc) as well as NLSC players so hopefully everyone will find it more interesting if they already don't think that.

I'll post Free Agency signings and the trade period tomorrow to bring me up to the start of the new season (finally :o )....

so if you're wondering what I'm gonna do with no PG's on my roster (after the draft my roster has no PG's  ) then you'll have to check in....what about Larry Hughes??? hmm....and others....and there is a trade or two :o

yep, I share the sentiments....I was gutted to miss out on Iwanaka (aka Honor-ism), but I had prepared myself for it once I saw that I had dropped to the No. 4 pick. It's annoying that Sonics got him as well as they pushed me down in the lottery :x

Dumars is a solid 2nd prize....hopefully he can develop into a good C....

oh, and for anyone wondering about the ratings by each of the draftees, the first (lower) rating is the rating they had after the draft, and the second (higher) rating in [brackets] is their rating at the end of the off-season....

I still don't rate Priest Askins though, even though he's rated 10 points higher than my guy....

Nice job, excellent coverage :applaud:
Hey,what's wrong with the nimber 1 pick anyway? His overall rating seems to be just fine, if not great, for a rookie big man...

cheers for the props....

as for the No. 1 pick Priest Askins, well I brought him in for a pre-draft workout and out of the five 1st Rd prospects that I worked out, he was easily the least impressive....

For one, he got schooled by Lawrence Funderburke
Two, he has limited potential
Three, he just didn't have a great feel to him

Maybe I'm being a bit hard on him, but I honestly didn't expect him to be rated that highly....

I probably would have picked him if he was available at 4, but mostly for trade bait....

btw, check out the free agent signings, you might see someone you like get signed :shhh:

anyway, I'm out.....

2005 OFF-SEASON COVERAGE

FREE AGENCY SIGNING PERIOD

Well, with the draft completed it's time to move onto the free agency signing period. Before free agency my roster looks like this:

C - Primo Brezec/Guy Dumars (R)
PF- Emeka Okafor/Melvin Ely
SF- Gerald Wallace
SG- Bernard Robinson/Andrew Watson (R)
PG- Jason Hart

So as you can all see the frontcourt is pretty solid at the moment, it only needs a backup SF and some additional depth. However, the backcourt is decimated. Although it didn't look good last season, there's nothing there but some scrubs at the moment. Although, the free agency period will concentrate on re-inforcing the backcourt.

As I entered the available free agents, I was disappointed to see that there was no top tier talent, it had all been re-signed by their respective teams. No that means you likely won't be seeing Larry Hughes in a Bobcats' uni any time soon.

Image

Grant Hill is the top free agent available, but the Bobcats already have the SF spot shored up pretty nicely and don't have a desire to splurge big money on someone who wouldn't be a good fit for the team. Veteran PG's Antonio Daniels and Nick Van Exel are also available, although I don't like the thought of investing in PG's who are in their 30's. Supersonics' super 6th man, Ronald Murray, is the lone SG of note. :(

JULY

I started out by immediately going out and splashing some money around to fill some roster holes. Since there is a huge lack of talent in the free agency pool this season, I have endeavoured to sign players to 2 year deals so that I can maximise my cap space for when the 2004 draft class (Lebron James, Dwayne Wade, Carmelo Anthony, Kirk Hinrich, Chris Bosh, etc) become free agents.

Bobcats Sign Ronald Murray

The Charlotte Bobcats are happy to announce the signing of former Bucks' and Sonics' SG Ronald Murray to a 2 year, $8.49 million deal. I paid Murray an extra $40,000 to backload the contract. It's obvious the team needed a decent SG and Murray is an improving one. He should slot straight into the starting SG spot and be an integral part of the team over the next couple of years.
Image
Image

Bobcats Sign Kyle Korver

The Bobcats were still in desperate need of a good backup SF, another SG and a good perimeter shooting among other things to replace the departed Jason Kapono. Well the Charlotte Bobcats have filled all those needs with the free agent signing of former Creighton star swingman Kyle Korver. Korver was signed to a 3 year, $6 million deal. I believe Korver is an upgrade over the departed Kapono as he is a better defender, and besides, I got him cheaper at $2 million per season, which was a few hundred thousand a season cheaper than his initial request.
Image
Image

Bobcats Sign Sean Marks

Looking for additional depth at the PF and C positions, the Charlotte Bobcats signed New Zealand-born Sean Marks to a 1 year deal at league minimum for a player of his experience, $807,000. The former Golden Bear will provide insurance at both the PF and C positions.
Image
Image

Bobcats Sign Ben Tshibaka

The Charlotte Bobcats announce the signing of undrafted rookie PG, Ben Tshibaka to a 1 year deal at league minimum of $385,000. Tshibaka is a player who has excellent potential and could develop into a very nice PG, although he's gonna need time. Tshibaka will likely be the 3rd PG on the roster and will likely sit the majority of his rookie season on the IR as he learns the NBA game.

Image

Bobcats Sign Luke Walton

The Charlotte Bobcats are happy to announce the signing of SF Luke Walton to a 2 year, $5.9 million dollar deal. Luke Walton has the ability to play effectively at both the SF and PF positions and will fill that void that the Bobcats had in the last season. He's a team player who should fit in well in the Bobcats system. He's got the ability to hit the open jumper and make a good pass which should endear himself to teammates, much like he did to Shaq Daddy.

AUGUST

With no significant deals offered to him, Grant Hill decided to re-sign with the Orlando Magic in a 1 year, $8.56 million deal.

I tried for the whole free agency period to sign PG Antonio Daniels but we just couldn't come to terms. I was in desperate need of a PG but I was adamant I wasn't going to break the 75% salary cap limit. Daniels wanted a 5 year deal at $6.5 mill per. I only wanted to give him a 2 year deal at $6.5 mill per. He didn't like it at all. I didn't want to give an ageing PG a long deal and limit my fiscal flexibility. As the free agency period wore on I relented a little and my final offer on the deadline was a 2 year, $14.5 million deal, with it backloaded so I could stay under the salary cap. He declined, so we went our separate ways. He ended up resigning with the Sonics. Seattle now has 3 PG's of similar abilities (Ridnour, Daniels and rookie Honor-ism).

After free agency my roster looks like this:

C - Primo Brezec/Guy Dumars (R)
PF- Emeka Okafor/Melvin Ely/Sean Marks
SF- Gerald Wallace/Luke Walton/Bernard Robinson
SG- Ronald Murray/Kyle Korver/Andrew Watson (R)
PG- Jason Hart/Ben Tshibaka (R)

As can be seen PG spot is still very weak. Ronald Murray can swing to PG at times and bring Korver in at SG, but at the moment the PG position is still a real worry.

That is how the free agency period panned out. Trade period summary to follow ASAP....
