BLAZERS MONTHLY RECAP - JANUARY 2007

January was a big month for the Portland Trailblazers. When I say this, I don't just mean on the court, I also mean off it. The month started & ended with a loss, but what occurred inbetween was pretty impressive. After falling to only 3-6 after December, the Blazers lost the 1st couple of games of December to fall to a dire 3-8, with the season is on the brink. Aside for Randolph & Telfair, everyone was playing pretty poorly, & the team had no cohesion.

Then coach Nate McMillan changed it up. He moved improving, young player Martell Webster to the starting SG spot & moved Morris Peterson to a sixth man role, something that he has been familiar & comfortable with for most of his career. The young, straight-out-of-high school backcourt of Telfair & Webster helped spur in the Blazers into winning 5 of their next 6 games, which included a 4 game win streak, which easily amounted for its best play in the last couple of seasons. Funnily enough, Morris Peterson seems to be scoring more now off the bench & is usually in the game down the stretch, which is the most important thing for Mo, rather than starting.

Prior to their win over the Charlotte Bobcats to extend their win streak to 4, the Blazers were involved in a 3 team, 9 player deal that brought them forwards Eddie Griffin & Apollo Carnegie, & guard Monta Ellis. The Blazers bid farewell to Travis Outlaw, Steve Blake, Sergia Monia & Ha Seung-Jin in that trade. However, they believe the addition of Griffin can help the team make a push for the playoffs this season, & down-the-line, are hoping for Ellis to have a breakout season.

The Blazers closed the month with a loss against the defending champion, Detroit Pistons, who showed their class against the gallant young Portland team. However, the loss to Detroit could not sour a month in which the team had a winning record as they went 5-4. A future star guard is starting, a vet is comfortable with his sixth man role, a few new players were added, & the team is starting to mesh well & hopefully push for a playoff berth after the All-Star Break.

KEY INJURIES

Image
Damn, Carlos is out injured AGAIN!!! He's been nothing but injured since he bolted LBJ & the Cavs & got that long term deal from the Jazz. This time he is out at least a month with a sprained finger. Poor Loozer

Image
On the flipside of the coin, can't really argue with rookie Shelden Williams' injury, he tore his achilles tendon & won't be back until March

Man, why did you have to go 5-4. You messed up my picks.  Congratulations.

I like your Loozer reference.

And, man, I knew Yao would win POTM. I should have remained faithful. :(

guys, I'm gonna drop the bonus points down to 0.005 if you get Player/Rookie of Month correct....don't want these bonus points getting too out of hand....no bonus points for entering one or the other, but if you enter both, you'll get 0.001, but you can risk that to gain 0.005 by getting all the matchups picked correctly....

I might have something along the lines, that if you use your 'power/influence' then your bonus points are reverted back to 0.000  damn, that's a brilliant idea :P

glad I could mess up your picks  everyone expects me to lose, but when the CPU doesn't screw me in simming for once, everyone is surprised  guess it must mean that my team is getting better on paper which is good :P

as for the Yao as WPOM, when I saw that I thought of you  every month you choose your boy Yao, then you finally relent & change your pick & hey presto, guess who shows up?!? none other than your boy Yao Ming

-----------

to everyone else, that's my last update for the night....if I get the chance tomorrow night (not sure if I will as my team is in semis tomorrow night) then I'll post an ASW update....I wonder who might be starting for the East? the West? how about the Soph Stars? what about the NLSC-ers? are any of them starting for the Rookie Stars? what about my Blazers? how many, if any at all, made it to ASW, whether it be for the main event, the Dunk Contest or to get wasted at the big parties (I think that rookie Watson might have something to say about that  )....if it's not up tomorrow, then it'll be up some time later in the week....

cheers for ongoing support guys....

 as they say in the betting world, the house always wins in the end

as for the update & layout, cheers....it's pretty basic, just gives a rundown of the basics with what happenned during the month, who performed, who didn't, covers stats & player improvement etc....I don't try & compete with the miraculous recaps that others do, I just found a formula that works for me & stuck with it....

with the standings & the Around the League stuff, I show it as links as I don't want to clog it up to much for 56k-ers like me, & besides, most ppl (including me), usually don't want to look at that stuff....so it gives the reader a choice....I should get into posting more random pics inbetween recaps, but I'm just starting to get too busy IRL, so I probably won't get around to that :(

cheers for comment Andreas, hope I didn't bore you with the over-analysis of your comment

 as for the possibility of you starting, then that would be slightly reminiscent of Andrew Bynum starting for the Rookies last season  although you are performing a lot better than Bynum did for the LaLa's last season....

nice recap, finally you have a winning month, and I guessed it correctly too.

Sad to see Outlaw gone but I think Eddie Griffin will have a career resurrection... then be traded

yep, just as i predicted.... u were going 5-4 (Y)
i somehow knew that u'll have a winning month :D

and the 9 games seemed to be too risky to pick W/L for every single game ^^
i'll wait for those predictions in the next months :)

i'm looking forward to the All-Star Weekend :D
it's always big fun !

and it's nice to have finally some other Rookie of the Month than Gay
it was just like everyone picked the same RoMs xD

i always enjoy reading your updates very much (Y)
...and i hope that we don't have too wait too long for the next update (i know u said it could be tomorrow... that'd be awesome :D )

cheers ;)

Nice recaps man, looks like the Blazers are starting to show form and Griffin seems to be doing well. One question though...with the current Blazers (NBA) who would you start at SG Lenard or Webster? Nice all thesame. (Y) (Y) (Y)
