I can do it without making a profile, by selecting the empty profile slot. There are two ways to select it, one has the option to create a profile the other has the option to choose player lock.

first thing i do is first start the game or even a practice will do..then go back to main menu and go to user profile..select your profile and you can find controller options (i think) then select your position you want to control..
let us know if youve done it

I posted this for another question about player lock.:

This is the strange thing. There are 5 slots for player profiles. If you have 1 controller plugged in, your controller will be one of the slots. Try each one of them, the correct one will have the "controller options" button available. (it's a terrible system and it may NOT be the #1 slot even if you have one controller.). If you have more than one controller, each one is fixed as a certain number (1-5). You need to find the respective one which will then allow that controller to select the "controller options" button. In the controller options, you'll be able to select preferred position.

(if your controller is automatically set by 2k9 as controller #3 for instance, you CANNOT use that controller to set the preferred position with SLOT #1,2,4,5)

This is the gayest thing about 2k9 by the way. The menus, like most other sports games, are all terrible ports of the kiddie console version.
