About to buy a new video card, but, ...

Tue Nov 11, 2008 3:25 pm

Hi. I'm about to buy a new video card for NBA 2K9 and general gaming.
I currently have a Sparkle 8600GT 256mb with DDR3.
The card i'm planning to upgrade to is ATI 4670 or 4650. The Manufacturer will be His or Palit. I won't get Sapphire's one because of high temperature and loud noise.

The only thing that bothers me is, those His and Palit 4670/4650 models have dual-slot coolers. So they are pretty big(but not long).

Here are the video cards:

I have a MSI P35 Neo-F mobo. Here it is:

The problem is:
My motherboard's south bridge is located just next to the PCI-EX 16x slot. It has a heatsink on it and it's a little higher than my PCI-EX 16x slot.

My question is:
If i buy a video card with dual-slot cooler, will that dual-slot cooler touch/contact the south bridge heatsink?

Especially if someone has the same motherboard and video cards with dual-slot coolers, please answer me. Others who have big hardware knowlage, then you answer me, too please!

Thanks i advance.

It depends on your heatsink. If it's only a little higher it should work with at least with the first one, but it's hard to tell from the sample pictures. If you're really concerned about your graphic card's heat - I would recommend you a geforce, especially if you're willing to pay a little more money (e.g. Geforce 260²). Buying a 4670/4650 won't pay off on a long-term basis. If you need a card desperately now it's okay, otherwise wait a month and buy a cheaper 4850/4870 then.

And concerning your heatsink... take your computer to the shop where you wan't to buy the card and ask them.

looking at pic itself u can tell that it might be in contact with the south bridge ;)

other suggestion>>
if u can find a "POWER COLOR ati brand" of ATI 4670 or 4650 , I think that would be fine on ur mobo, (Y)

and btw if u have money to buy a geforce 260, don't waste it on that card, just buy ATI 4800 series X2  , almost the same price but much better (Y)

Ow. My budget fits in 4670s very well. But 48xx is not the card i'm looking at right now. Cuz i have Asus 350 watt PSU and i will need another one with 500W min. for the 48xx series or even 9600GT and any other high budget video cards.

So maybe:
3850 / 3870 / 9600 GT or this 4650/4670 fits well in my chasis budget and psu wise.

just make sure u look for a POWER COLOR ATi BRAND, it may fit on your mobo :)

Uh.. PSU is really low-end. If it's a quality brand PSU you might use these cards w/o having problems. But 350W is really low even for the graphic cards you mentioned. Upgrading to a 500-750W PSU would pay off if you plan to upgrade your pc further.

Especially since a good 500W PSU can be had for $30 if you look for rebates and deals. I bought an OCZ stealthxtreme 600W for $29.99 after rebate with free shipping. Newegg rocks.

Sorry but,
Fİrst; there is no rebate in my country.
Second; the exchange rate is damn high. I mean, buying sth. for 1 dollar means about 1,60 dollars in my country. For 100 dollars, this means 160 in my country and as you can see, it becomes fairly high.

What do you think?
Will Asus PCIe EN9400GT SILENT/HTP/512MB graphic card good/enough for NBA 2k9?
