IGN PS2/lastgen review: 5.5/10

Talk about NBA Live 08 here.

IGN PS2/lastgen review: 5.5/10

Ironically this year's entry in the NBA Live series completely does away with the Superstar abilities that were the focal point for Live 07 and has instead put 08's focus squarely on… nothing.

On the court things feel just as familiar, and considering what we thought of last year's effort, that isn't exactly a good thing.

But where are the new animations? The subtle refinements to the gameplay that we like to see each year? Sadly there really aren't any to speak of.

The biggest change that EA Sports has made to NBA Live 08 is that the camera rotation that used to take place on every change of possession has been replaced by an awkward flash transition. Now when the ball changes from one team's possession to another it just flashes you to the new perspective. The whole thing is very disorienting and isn't conducive to running a smooth fast break at all.

Then there's the fact that the gameplay just doesn't feel real. Shaq can somehow make jumpers from behind the free throw line. Shaq making any shot from behind the free throw line is bad enough, but when you see the seven-footer shooting a jump shot, things just aren't right.

The one positive that we can say for the gameplay is that the Superstar abilities are completely removed, making NBA Live 08 less arcadey and more pure basketball. Not to say that Live 08 doesn't revolve around driving and dunking, because it does, but at least you aren't cycling through the equivalent of superpowers during gameplay. That has to count for something.

When the dust settles on NBA Live 08 it will be remembered as a disappointing end

Those who are desperate to do some balling on their aging console have nowhere else to look so here’s some advice, go over and play your friend’s PS3 edition of NBA 2K8.

4.0 Graphics
This game is the exact opposite of gorgeous.

I don't think many of us found this to be surprising. All of EA's focus will probably be on the next-gen versions and I don't see why they would put so any attention in the current-gen market. PC's generally had at least equal graphical capabilities as the consoles competing against it when Live started with Live 97?, and a lot more people had computers than game systems. The number of computers heavily outweigh the amount of 360's and PS3s today more than ever but now, a PC gamer can't match the performance of the next-gen consoles without spending an extra 400-500 bucks in parts, if he even had a respectable computer to begin with.
There isn't much hope for Live PC users.

The camera rotation was definitely better but if you're playing on one of the TV style camera angles you don't have to deal with that anyway.

The biggest disappointment is probably Dynasty Mode though. I'd hoped that some of the features would be implemented but the PDA remains and everything else is pretty much the same as last year. Not what I was hoping for, to say the least.

IF EA is focusing on next gen consoles........WHY are they releasing the current gen.....when they are not doing anything except changing the title to 08 the menus etc....

I WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED IF EA SAID "Hey we just don't have the time to create new features that is why we will not have nba live 08 on current gen at all."

I would prefer if they didn't release anything instead they try TO MAKE some MONEY out of nothing by trying to fool all of us that it's a brand new game.

I'd say they're releasing them because there's still a market for the game on the previous generation of consoles. Not everyone would be willing to forego a release on the PS2 version, particularly if it remained the most up to date console that they owned. Whether EA immediately discontinued development for the PS2 or not, someone wouldn't be happy with the decision since not everyone has the same stance on the matter.

Nice one EA.

I give up on these guys. NBA Live has been a mess for the last three years now. I think Live 05 was the best of the bunch but that game didn't even have fastbreaks - a big part of basketball.

I can't say I'm suprised, but I am disappointed. I had hope that EA could finally put together a good game for us this year, and I guess I was wrong.

Just to show how bad NBA Live has become - I went to my cousins place 2 nights ago and played NBA Inside Drive 2004. That game was better than Live in my opinion was also alot more fun.

EA should probably just work on currentgen Live. It's not like they can compare to 2k Sports on nextgen.

I'm done with Live, and I might just pick up a PS2 and 2k8 when I get some money. It may not be nextgen, but I'm sure as hell it's better than the shit EA has been pumping out year after year.

EA is deserving this rating. They didn't do anything to make a game better than Live 07. I think Live 08 will be more bad than 07.
For 07 you have all the patches you want, really. And Freestyle Superstar Control. Yes, I'm not kidding you, I'm saying that FSS is better than Go-To Moves, on Old-Gen of course.

Live 07 has been, is and will be the best old-gen basketball game ever. I think I won't buy Live 08, why should I do that? I can have Fiba Nationals Team on 07 with all the courts I need and the cyberfaces, don't care the missing speech files.

EA is deserving this rating.

WAITING LIVE 09, IT MAY BE THE FIRST NEXT-GENERATION LIVE VERSION ON PC.

Bye.
