The dream has come true - Coaching Dynasty

February 25th, 2004

It was the All-Star Weekend night. The dunk contest, 3 point shootout, all the glamor. I was watching it, in the middle of the night, from my house in Italy. I led my team to Euroleague championship last season, but I missed home. I missed NBA.

I was tired, just about going to bed. But then my phone ringed. It was weird, caller was from the States. Maybe some college looking for a coach.
-Clint Hintz, I said to the caller.
-Hi Clint, it's Michael Jordan calling you.
-MJ, my man, how are ya?
I played with Michael in North Carolina. Our team was amazing. We had the GOAT, James Worthy, Sam Perkins, Kenny Smith, Brad Daughtery, and even some European kid called Timo. He didn't have what it takes, but he was a cool kid. Nowadays he works with Michael's restaurants.
-You are a coach, right? Michael asked from me.
-Yeah, so?
-Next season the NBA expands, Michael explained. - Our North Carolina gets a team, the Bobcats.
-You serious? After the Hornets moved, we get another team? I was amazed by David Stern.
-I want YOU to be our head coach, MJ told me.
-When do you want me to be in NC? I asked.

My contract ran out here in Italy, so it was a no brainer. My kids didn't really like Italy, as much as they loved USA, so they wanted to go as soon as possible. I was ready for the challenge.

June 10th, 2004

The Mavericks won the championship against the Pistons in Game 7. Dirk was the Finals MVP. Some legends retired, including Dikembe Mutombo, Karl Malone and Reggie Miller.

It was the draft lottery. I was there with MJ, probably as excited that he was. The NBA gave us 25% chance to get #1. Kings had three lottery picks. So the countdown started.

Heat, Nets, Rockets, Jazz, Kings, Cavs, Pacers, Kings, Hawks and Knicks. Down to top 4. David Stern comes to tell the team.

-The #4 pick will be Denver Nuggets, Stern announced.
We both were relieved. Atleast top 3.
- The #3 pick will be... our newest expansion team Charlotte Bobcats.
We were mad. I thought they'd give us #1. But no. And even worse. Hornets, those that used to play in Charlotte, got the #2 pick. Kings got their #1. They have picks #1, #7 and #10. Re-boosting clearly.

I didn't get down to the draft, but watched it from TV. MJ took us a wingman Luol Deng in the 1st round and a another wing on the 2nd as he selected Warren Grady.

MJ did a great job at recruiting talent. We got a All-Star in Elton Brand and a decent point guard at Mike Bibby. Good team in my opinion.

PG: Mike Bibby (86) - 36
SG: Gordan Giricek (76) - 28
SF: Luol Deng (75) - 35
PF: Elton Brand (90) - 40
C: Brian Grant (74) - 20
6th: Joe Smith (78) - 29
7th: Lorenzen Wright (75) - 24
8th: Trenton Hassell (73) - 18
9th: George Lynch (66) - 10
10th: Warren Grady (56) - 0
11th: Milos Stojic (55) - 0
12th: Ted Manning (50) - 0
