Celtics sign Shaq to two-year deal
Posted by Gary Dzen, Boston.com Staff October 10th, 2010 9:00 PM
Sources have confirmed today that 38 year old center Shaquille O'Neal will join the Boston Celtics roster. Shaq was signed to the veteran minimum, which allows a team to offer up the lowest possible salary to a player so that they may sign them while over the salary cap.
Shaq, who has won 4 rings in his dominate 18 year career is looking to add one last ring to his collection to tie with former team mate Kobe Bryant. O'Neal has been a member of 5 different teams in his career making this recent Boston sighting his sixth team change.
"This trade will give us the size to compete with the taller teams in the league", says Celtic GM Danny Ainge. "Not only is he a big body, but he is a player who has been through it all. He knows how to win and for the price we got him for, there was no reason not to go after him."
When asked about the signing and the future of his career, Shaq hinted that this would be his final NBA contract. "I'm turning 39 next year and then 40 the year after. It's no secret that I'm getting older and I really can't see myself playing after this contract is up."
Celtic Nation stunned; Kendrick Perkins traded to OKC
Posted by Gary Dzen, Boston.com Staff October 12th, 2010 7:53 PM
In a blockbuster trade that no one saw coming, starting center Kendrick Perkins and backup guard Nate Robinson have been shipped out of Boston. The Boston Celtics in return will receive Thunder forward Jeff Green and center Nenad Krstic. Perkins, who had spent his entire career in Boston before the trade is expected to add toughness to the Thunder frontcourt. Nate Robinson, who was received in a Celtics-Knicks trade during last year's trade deadline was also sent away, perhaps because of his underwhelming play last year.
Jeff Green was originally a Celtic in 2007 before the Ray Allen/Kevin Garnett draft day trade. Originally the franchise player of OKC before Kevin Durant, Green has struggled with his role of reserve power forward and Celtic fans hope that a James Posey role would be a better fit for him. Nenad Krstic was most likely added to the trade to make up for the empty center slot.
"We desperately needed depth at the small forward position.", said Danny Ainge when asked about the trade. "Getting Jeff Green will allow Pierce to get the rest he needs as well as make us a younger team. With this trade, the Celtics have become a better team."
Kendrick Perkins was asked how he felt about the trade earlier. "Danny Ainge told me about the trade before the media was told and it hurt me. I've been with this organization for my entire career and its going to be a tough transition to a brand new team. The NBA is a business but even then, its still a hard process being traded."
"The way I see it, me and Perk are in this together. I've already been through a tough trade myself and I know what he's going through." said Nate Robinson "We both just need to stick together and make the best of this."
Flurry of trades continue; Entire Celtic bench undergoes makeover
Posted by Gary Dzen, Boston.com Staff October 12th, 2010 8:00 PM
Danny Ainge is still making trades as the Celtics ship out forward Marquis Daniels, center Semih Erden and rookie Luke Harangody for two unprotected picks and cap relief. With the money saved from these trades, the Boston Celtics have added former Pacer Troy Murphy, Heat point guard Carlos Arroyo, and free agent Sasha Pavlovic to their bench. These trades along with the Perkins trade has given the Celtics five new bench players to incorporate into their system.
"Next year will be a rebuilding year for this Celtic team and I feel we can both set ourselves up for an easier transition while still winning Banner 18." said Danny Ainge in a recent interview. "We also got a unprotected lottery pick from the Clippers that we really feel we can make use of. I feel that I've given this team the pieces it needs for this year and the future."
Celtic head coach Doc Rivers has admitted that getting these new pieces to mesh is going to take some extra effort on his part. "Building chemistry is never an easy task and at the same time it can be the most important task. We have a very strong veteran core on this team, so it is important to make sure that they welcome the newcomers."
When asked about the recent trades done by their organization, Pierce responded with confidence. "Danny was the one who brought me, Kevin, and Ray together so I have total confidence in him. It hurts losing someone as hard working as Perkins but I feel that this team has the pieces to go all the way again this year."

Pavlovic waived; C's sign 'Toine from D-League
Posted by Gary Dzen, Boston.com Staff October 20th, 3:00 PM
Perhaps in an effort to buy back the fans of Boston, Celtic GM has waived recently recieved Sasha Pavlovic for ex-Celtic Antoine Walker. Walker, who was currently playing for the Idaho Stampede was desperately trying to regain his lost money from gambling debts. He was drafted in 1996 by the Boston Celtics and after several years, he was traded to the Miami Heat where he won his first and only championship trophy.
"Antoine has had his share of financial problems in the past" said Danny Ainge in response to reporters. "Antoine was always good to the fans here in Boston and we feel that he deserves a second chance. He's got a ring already so we know he has some playoff experience. If he can regain some of his NBA form back, he'll be a great addition to our team. Doc Rivers was also optimistic about the signing. "He won't get too many minutes during the beginning parts of the season. He's still a bit out of shape. If he works hard over the next few months, I think we can make him a key part of our bench over time."
"Me and Antoine were always the best of friends back a few years ago. He was partially responsible for the player I became today." said Paul Pierce in response to the deal. "We'll make sure he knows our system in and out by the playoffs."
