Grant Hill's Second Chance - The End.

Fri Dec 10, 2010 9:12 am

Imagine Grant Hill with the same skills he had as a college player at Duke, in the 2010 NBA Draft. This Grant Hill has not suffered any career-threatening injuries and is already considered the top player in the draft, marked down as a potential superstar, and some have gone as far as to call him a candidate to be the next Michael Jordan. This is the goal every player in the NBA players dream of, but few have ever come close. Is Grant Hill this generation's Michael Jordan?

Pre-Season Summary:

The Warriors have built a very strong roster, featuring Monta Ellis, Stephen Curry, Al Jefferson, and rookies Grant Hill and Derrick Favors. These players combine to form a superb starting line-up - when they are healthy. Stephen Curry missed three out of eight games, while Al Jefferson and Derrick Favors each missed two. Monta Ellis and Grant Hill play tremendously well together, as Hill averaged 15 points per game and Ellis averaged over 20. Rudy Fernandez was very promising off the bench and also played as a starter in the games where Curry was injured.

All in all, the Warriors played great ball, going 5-3 in the preseason, which included two games against the Lakers and a game against the Suns. They dropped the Lakers both times, but fell to the Suns, Clippers, and Kings in the three games Curry missed.

Grant Hill Lookout:
Hill looks extremely promising. He played under thirty minutes a game during the preseason and averaged 15.5 there. He's extremely versatile and has already played at every position except for center. He recorded a triple-double against the Clippers, while playing a point-forward role, after scoring 11 points, 15 assists, and 10 rebounds. While Monta Ellis and Stephen Curry are known to be one of the best backcourt duos in the league, the duo may very well become a very solid trio. I like how Grant Hill is shaping up.
Is he a clear-cut Rookie of the Year? Not yet. Blake Griffin, who missed all of the 2010 season, is still a rookie and is better than anyone imagined. He's averaging 24.5/19.8 in the preseason and John Wall has 26 and 10 a game. Grant Hill has serious competition.

Denver:
-sends Carmelo Anthony, Chauncey Billups, and Ty Lawson

Portland:

October, November, December Recap

Quite a few things have happened to the Warriors in the last two months. Stephen Curry may be out for the season with a severe ankle sprain that required surgery that was performed two weeks ago. Raymond Felton became the team's starting PG and is playing very well, helping Golden State to a 21-14 record, good enough for the 5th seed in the West. Brandan Wright finally recovered from his injury, while a still-injured Charlie Bell was traded to Oklahoma City for an underachieving Serge Ibaka and Acie Law. Reggie Williams was traded to Houston for Jordan Farmar. Monta Ellis leads the Western Conference in scoring with 29.0 ppg. Only Dwyane Wade has a higher average than Ellis.

Grant Hill Lookout:
Grant Hill is looking like a potential rookie All-Star. While he wasn't pulled ahead of John Wall or Blake Griffin in the Rookie of the Year voting, things are going great for him. Here is how he stacks up with the other two, stats-wise:
HILL: 16.5 ppg, 5.9 apg, 7.0 rpg, 1.5 spg, 0.8 bpg, 44.4 FG%, 27.2 3P%, 72.0 FT% in 35 games of 33.9 MPG.
GRIFFIN: 21.1 ppg, 3.8 apg, 12.5 rpg, 1.2 spg, 2.0 bpg, 50.5 FG%, 10.0 3P%, 66.7 FT% in 39 games of 36.8 MPG.
WALL: 17.6 ppg, 10.1 apg, 3.9 rpg, 2.0 spg, 0.5 bpg, 39.7 FG%, 36.5 3P%, 85.7 FT% in 20 games of 35.5 MPG. (missed 17 games in November and December - sprained wrist and broken finger)

Grant Hill has been great to the Warriors. They surrounded him with good players and in return, he leads his team in steals per game and is a runner-up in both assists and rebounds per game. He has shown that his versatility is for real. When Monta Ellis missed three games due to a family tragedy, Grant Hill filled in at the 2 to let Vlad Radmanovic play the 3. When Shawn Marion was nursing a hyperextended elbow, Hill filled in there. He plays efficiently at point guard as well, recording at least eight assists and a steal in all the games he has played significant minutes at the position. He has had big games and has shown consistency. He has scored double-digits in all but six games so far this season and has recorded two 40-point games already: one in a 130-85 blowout of Minnesota and one in a double-overtime thriller against the Spurs in which Tim Duncan made a triple-double while grabbing 21 rebounds.

Hill has produced two triple-doubles himself. On back-to-back nights. He recorded 22 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 assists last week against the Lakers and followed it up with a New Years' Eve win in Boston in which he had 32 points to go along with 10 rebounds and 14 assists. He is slowly transforming into a rookie monster, much like Blake Griffin, who recently scored 48 points and 26 rebounds in a losing effort to the New Jersey Nets.

January Recap

The Golden State Warriors were the best team in the league in January, with a record of 11-3. Monta Ellis and Raymond Felton were both named All-Stars, Ellis, second in the league in scoring, trails Kevin Durant by 4.2 points, with 28.8 points per game, while Raymond Felton is averaging 17 points, 10 assists, 7 rebounds, and 2.5 steals. Al Jefferson is averaging 12 points and 12 boards a game, while Shawn Marion averages 15 and 8. The Warriors held a six game winning streak, propelling them to the third seed in the West. The Warriors outscored each of their opponents by 15, including a game against the Miami Big 3 in which LeBron James scored 45 and Dwyane Wade scored 32.

Grant Hill Lookout:
Despite missing the first three games of the new year due to a sore elbow, Hill averaged 18 points per game in January, five rebounds, four assists, and a steal and a half over eleven games. Grant Hill was left off the All-Star team in favor of Gerald Wallace, averaging 20/10, but has shot exactly 50% from the floor and 77% from the stripe. Hill's best individual game so far occured in a loss to Boston in which Hill scored 49 and grabbed 9 boards. He shot 19-28 from the field, but failed to outscore Paul Pierce, who scored 52. Rondo had 21 assists. Hill was ejected three minutes into the next game for a flagrant foul on Carmelo Anthony.
Grant Hill is an amazing player already, but he's got a few flaws:
 He shoots way too many threes. His shot selection was downright awful; he took 4.5 outside shots a game and only made .9/game.
 He should learn to draw fouls. He only shot 27 free throws in the entire month of January.
 His overall D could use impovement. When he has a good offenseive night, he abandons defense altogether. This was plainly seen the aformentioned Heat and Celtics games and also happened against the Bobcats. (Hill: 24 points, Wallace: 37 points, Jackson: 30 points, Charlotte wins 120-116 in OT.)
 He should work on passing. His passes do get lazy, and that adds to his 2.5+ TO's per game. Gerald Wallace recorded seven steals when he played against Golden State, Hill had six turnovers)

Recap Of Feb. through April

The revamped Golden State Warriors [60-22] are looking strong with the third seed in the West, right behind the Lakers [64-18] and the Mavericks [63-19]. The Warriors closed out the season with a six-game winning streak that could have been a thirteen game winning streak if Raymond Felton hadn't fouled LeBron James with 1.1 seconds left. The Heat [69-13] lead the league, while LeBron James won his third straight MVP after averaging 27 points, 7 assists, and 12 rebounds a game. The Heat don't look so good in the playoffs, however, because Chris Bosh was fouled hard by Andrew Bogut in mid-March and Bosh suffered a moderate-to-severe concussion that would keep him out of games until early June. In other news, Andrew Bynum was traded to the Washington Wizards for Javale McGee and a 1st round draft pick, just a week before Bynum's knee gave way during a practice. He will miss the entire next season. Yao Ming announced his retirement after suffering a torn ligament in his ankle. The Mavericks lost Brendan Haywood to a fractured elbow, while the Thunder were without Durant [knee] and Westbrook [back] for three weeks.

Panic struck Golden State as well, as Stephen Curry, who returned to games in early February, suffered major stress fractures in his right ankle and foot just eight games after returning from the previous injury. This time it was more severe and it may take up to a year for him to fully heal. While the Warriors already had an All-Star point guard in Raymond Felton, they were banking on having Stephen Curry lead the second unit or sometimes run a three-guard lineup with Ellis, Felton, and Curry to create speed mismatches. The Warriors snagged the third seed in the west with 60 wins, but that's not the only thing they snagged. They were able to add Knicks forward Wilson Chandler to their weak bench in exchange for two 2012 first round draft picks, and Vladimir Radmanovic.

Grant Hill Lookout:
Grant Hill averaged 19.4 points per game for the season, along with 4.4 apg, 7.6 rpg, 1.2 bpg, 1.3 spg, 43.8 FG%, 27.3 3P%. Hill, however, did not win the Rookie of the Year award. Blake Griffin took that home, easily averaging 24 points per contest with 11.5 rebounds, and 2.4 blocks. He was named the Western Conference POTM in March after leading the NBA in points and rebounds for the month, with 33.0 points and 14.4 rebounds, as the Clippers won 12 of 16 games, including a 53-point blowout of the 76ers in which Griffin scored 44 points, grabbed 20 rebounds, and injured Thaddeus Young.

Hill still needs to work on his shot selection. He averaged just 27% for the season, shooting just under four times a game from distance and making just under one a game. However, he is showing immense potential, playing next to Felton, Ellis, Marion, Jefferson, Chandler, and Curry (when healthy). He already grabs more rebounds a game than Shawn Marion and steals more than Raymond Felton, while his scoring is second only to Monta Ellis, the league's scoring champion, with 32.3 points per game. Hill's versatility is unmatched on his team and has played every position from point guard to center.

The Playoff Disappointment

The Warriors were taken by suprise in the first round of the playoffs by sleeper team Memphis Grizzlies. Rudy Gay averaged 34 ppg and Zach Randolph averaged 21/16 over the course of the six game series. The Warriors won game one and game four, but the Grizz took 2, 3, 5, and 6 - all victories of ten or more. The Grizzlies, who traded OJ Mayo and Mike Conley to the Clippers for Eric Gordon, Ryan Gomes, and two first round picks, had 48 wins after a nine-game winning streak at the end of the season.

Gay locked down Hill to just six points in game two, eight points in game five, and eleven in game six, while Gay scored at least 35 in each of those. Randolph clobbered Shawn Marion in game two, causing Marion to sprain his wrist. Marion missed the second half of game two, and would only make his return on game 6. Raymond Felton had fun in these playoffs, however. The Grizzlies were starting Zabian Dowdell at point guard after trading Conley and Vasquez. Dowdell's poor defense allowed Felton to score a double-double five times in six games and a 20/20 twice (games 1 and 4 - both wins.) Gasol and Jefferson were fun to watch; they dueled under the boards, but Jefferson came out on top, averaging 4.5 blocks per game to Gasol's 2.5. Jefferson also outrebounded Gasol 13.0 rpg to 12.2 rpg.

Hill's highlight moments came in game one, where he scored 24 points and eight rebounds, also nailing TWO half-court buzzer-beaters ending the first and third quarters. Those, however, would be his only threes of his rookie season playoffs. Hill was taken out in game five after being ejected in the second quarter for a hard foul on Marc Gasol and was replaced by Wilson Chandler, who scored 30. It was Hill's fourth ejection in the NBA.

The Jazz (4th seed) and the Thunder (7th seed) would meet in the WCF, while the Celtics (2nd seed) beat the top-seeded, yet Bosh-less, Heat in an epic seven-game duel. After the Thunder beat the Jazz in the West, the Thunder swept the Celtics in four games, led by Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook. Durant would score 46 points twice in the four games, while Russell Westbrook would record TWO triple-doubles and a 40-point game. The Thunder trumped the Celtics in game 4, 132-99. Rajon Rondo was severely outperformed in games two through four after recording 21 assists and 18 points in game one. Kevin Durant and Rusell Westbrook won their first rings in 2011.
