Great win, considering the Jazz sure loved to crash the offensive glass.

Excellent OT win against the Jazz. (Y) It's games like those that keep you from simming games. Sucks that Gordon couldn't score the game-winner.

Thanks guys, glad you enjoyed the recap. Certainly would've liked it if I could've had another gamewinner for Gordon (he had one against the Pistons in the first season) but as it stands it was still a great result. :)

January 21st, 2007
Chicago (138) at Phoenix (86)
Bulls win by 52, extend streak to ten games

[ Boxscore ]

Image
The Phoenix Suns were on the wrong end of a record setting victory

Two nights after a hard-fought overtime win in Utah, the Chicago Bulls turned in their most dominant performance of the season with a franchise-record 52 point win over the Phoenix Suns. Eight Bulls players scored in double figures led by Ben Gordon with 22, who also finished with five assists and two steals. Kirk Hinrich also scored 20 points for the Bulls while handing out 12 assists and making three steals. Rookie Emmet Smith led the Suns with 16 points off the bench while Eddie House also came off the bench to score 15 points in 32 minutes, spending more time than usual on the floor as Steve Nash sat with foul trouble.

The Bulls scored the first four points of the game and never looked back as they picked off errant passes, forced the Suns into three second violations and played lockdown defense. Tyson Chandler blocked three of his four shots in the first quarter alone and Deng scored 10 of his 12 points in the period as Chicago raced out to a commanding 37-15 lead heading into the second quarter. Phoenix, who committed 11 turnovers in the first quarter, turned the ball over a further twelve times in the second quarter and managed only 13 points to 27 by Chicago. They shot just 33% in the first half, including an abysmal 7/22 performance in the first quarter.

Chicago would continue to build on their impressive lead in the third quarter, more than doubling Phoenix's point total until late in the period when the Suns managed to start snaring some offensive rebounds and connecting on second chance baskets. Phoenix scored 26 in the third but could do little to contain Hinrich, who was a perfect 5/5 from the field in the third (including 3/3 from downtown) and also racked up five assists.

Carlos Boozer was the only Bulls starter to see time in the fourth quarter, as Chicago would increase their lead to as many as 60. Phoenix continued to dominate the offensive glass in the fourth quarter and primarily through second chance points managed to score 32 fourth quarter points. They ultimately would not close the gap though as the Bulls ran off 38 points in extend garbage time, for their tenth consecutive win and a record-setting margin of victory.

"It felt like everything was going our way," Gordon said after the game. "One of those nights where the basket looks like a hula-hoop. We saw how their offense stalled when Nash had to leave with those early fouls and we just took advantage." Nash played only 22 minutes, scoring two points while grabbing five rebounds and handing out just one assist. "We were embarrassed here tonight, plain and simple," a dejected Mike D'Antoni told reporters. "They showed up and played like the defending champions. We showed up and played like a YMCA league team." D'Antoni paused before adding "No, we didn't even play as well as that."

The Bulls have struggled at times with their three point shooting this season but were on target tonight, connecting on 11/23 attempts. Gordon, Hinrich, Steve Smith and Kyle Korver accounted for all 11 of the Bulls' three point baskets, making at least two each. Chicago also did an excellent job sharing the basketball as they assisted on 38 of their 56 field goals, with 12 assists coming in the first quarter alone. The Bulls also only committed 14 turnovers; Phoenix in contrast assisted on 14 of their 39 field goals and had 34 turnovers.

In addition to Ben Gordon and Kirk Hinrich, standout performers for the Bulls included Carlos Boozer (15 points, seven rebounds), Tyson Chandler (13 points, nine rebounds, four blocks), Mike James (11 points, 7 assists), Kyle Korver (13 points, 3/5 from downtown), Luol Deng and Steve Smith (12 points apiece). For the Suns, Shawn Marion contributed a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds, James Jones scored 10 off the bench and Boris Diaw also scored 11.

Chicago will now look to extend their winning streak to 11 games against the Trailblazers in Portland on Thursday.

Notes: Chicago shot 62.9% 56/89) on the night while Phoenix shot just 41.1% (39/95) from the field...Phoenix held a 43-32 advantage in rebounding including a 21-6 edge on the offensive glass. The Suns out-rebounded the Bulls 30-10 in the second half, including twelve offensive rebounds in the third quarter...all 24 available players played in the game and scored at least two points. 13 players in total scored in double figures (eight for Chicago, five for Phoenix)...Ben Gordon is currently third in the league in scoring, posting an average of 24.7 ppg. Dirk Nowitzki leads the league with 25.4 ppg, followed by Baron Davis with 25.3 ppg...this is the second double digit winning streak for the Bulls this season. They won sixteen straight from November 25th to December 30th.

Current Record: 33-5
Next Game: @ Portland Trailblazers; 15-21 (January 25th)

That one was fun for a very different reason as the challenge became to hold Phoenix to as low a score as possible and trying for a record margin of victory. I don't mind having a game like this every now and again. ;)

Awesome job containing Superman (Steve Nash). Even with Steve Nash, I'm sure you still would've whooped them. (Y) That's just amazing to win by 52, and equally amazing to force 34 turnovers. More games like that, and you'll reach 34 wins in a row in no time.

The Utah game is definitely a candidate for Game of the Year. Chandler was great in the fourth, I've pretty much decided against trading him at the deadline for more cap space and making do with the ample room I'll have thanks to the other moves I've already made.

Much like Nash, foul trouble definitely helped keep Stoudemire in check. His lone field goal was a dunk in the second quarter, a FSS move that I wasn't able to stop.

It definitely was an anomaly, Nash usually kills me as well. Pretty hard for them to get going with their early foul trouble and I was able to do a pretty good job containing Amare with Chandler when he was on the floor.

January 25th, 2007
Chicago (121) at Phoenix (76)
Bulls blaze into Portland, win by 45

Ben Gordon and the Bulls are flying high

Chicago followed up a record-setting 52 point victory over the Phoenix Suns with a 45 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers. Ben Gordon led all scorers with 27 points as the Bulls made their first twelve shots and never looked back. Zach Randolph top scored for the Blazers with 18 points despite playing just 23 minutes due to foul trouble.

After falling behind 21-8 midway through the first quarter, the Blazers rallied to finish the quarter down 29-22 and would come within five early in the second quarter at 31-26. The run was shortlived however as Chicago soon took a commanding lead and cruised through the rest of the game, pulling their starters for good at the seven minute mark of the fourth quarter.

The Bulls were dealt a blow with 2:43 remaining in the first quarter however as reserve swingman Kyle Korver left the court limping and did not return after being fouled on a layup attempt by Randolph. X-rays were negative however and he is likely day-to-day.

After shooting 11/23 from three point range against Phoenix on Sunday, the Bulls were just 2/16 from downtown against the Blazers while Portland failed to connect on any of their 11 attempts from beyond the arc. The Bulls were able to get to the line for 27 free throw attempts of which they made 21; Gordon was 10/10 from the charity stripe. The Bulls also shot 63.6% from the field in the game compared to just 43% by the Blazers.

"They're just steamrolling everyone right now," Blazers coach Nate MacMillan commented after the game. "It wasn't our best effort but after a game like this, you've just got to put it out of your mind and move on. They got us on a bad day. We got them in the midst of a dominant run." The Blazers were held to 17 points in the fourth quarter while the Bulls scored 38 in the final period. Their 76 points tied their third lowest scoring output on the season and was also the third lowest by a Bulls' opponent.

Chicago now fly out to Washington to face the Wizards tomorrow night, while Portland will play host to the New Jersey Nets.

Notes: Portland commited 26 turnovers compared to 13 by Chicago...Bulls guard Monta Ellis is expected to return by early next month. He is currently nursing a sprained ankle...all twelve Bulls players played with eleven scoring at least two points. Only Korver, injured shortly after entering the game, was held scoreless.

Current Record: 34-5
Next Game: @ Washington Wizards; 15-22 (January 26th)

Chicago (107) at Washington (91)
Bulls defeat Wizards for twelfth straight win

[ Boxscore ]

Image
Mike James and the Bulls repeatedly picked the pockets of the Wizards

Ben Gordon scored 26 points and handed out eight assists as the Chicago Bulls defeated the Washington Wizards 107-91 for their twelfth straight victory and setting up an opportunity for an undefeated month should they defeat the Indiana Pacers next Tuesday. Antawn Jamison led all scorers with 34 points and also added eight rebounds as the Wizards lost their third straight game.

Caron Butler scored the game's first basket but the Wizards were soon reeling as they had no answer for Gordon, who scored 15 points in the first quarter. Chicago built an eleven point lead but couldn't hold it as Washington came storming back, trailing by only five at the quarter's end. Although the Bulls would succeed in putting a little more distance between themselves and the Wizards in the second quarter to take a nine point lead into halftime, Washington continued to chip away at the lead until the Bulls finally went up by eighteen heading into the fourth. The Wizards did not seriously challenge the lead again, which at times ballooned to as many as 23 during the final period.

In addition to Ben Gordon, Carlos Boozer, Kirk Hinrich and Nick Collison all scored in double digits as Boozer tallied 18 points, Hinrich totaled 16 points and seven assists and Collison added 12 points. Caron Butler scored 14 points for the Wizards and Antonio Daniels scored 12 off the bench. Limited by foul trouble, star guard Gilbert Arenas managed only four points in 25 minutes but had five assists.

Notes: Kyle Korver sat out the game with a toe injury. He is currently listed as day-to-day...Washington held a 33-17 advantage in rebounding, including 15-6 at the offensive end...Washington committed 30 turnovers to 19 by Chicago.

Current Record: 35-5

January 30th, 2007
Chicago (113) at Indiana (100)
Gordon scores 59 as Bulls win thirteenth straight

[ Boxscore ]

Image
Gordon knocks down a three to reach 50 points

Ben Gordon topped the 50 point mark for the fifth time this season and the fourth time in January with a season high 59 points as the Chicago Bulls defeated the Indiana Pacers 113-100 for their thirteenth consecutive victory. With the win, the Chicago Bulls have gone undefeated for the month of January. Gordon also became the third player in league history to record at least ten assists in the same game as scoring 50 points, as well as producing the highest point total in a single game without grabbing a rebound.

Gordon's barrage began early as he scored 12 first quarter points but the Bulls once again squandered their early double digit lead, allowing Indiana to get back within eight by the end of the quarter. The Pacers would close the gap to four behind the strong player of Jamaal Tinsley, who finished with 28 points and 7 assists, but 15 second quarter points from Gordon helped push Chicago out to a fifteen point lead at halftime.

The Pacers proved their resilience in the third quarter as they once again cut into the lead but once again buoyed by Gordon and 11 third quarter points, the Bulls kept them at bay and extended the lead back out to fifteen heading into the fourth. Gordon then scored 21 fourth quarter points as the Bulls held off one final push by the Pacers, who came no closer than eight before the Bulls finally won by thirteen.

"Ben's had a tremendous month for us," Bulls coach Andrew Begley said after the game. "He's not doing it alone, but he deserves to be right up there in the MVP talks." Kirk Hinrich agreed. "We could tell Ben was feeling it tonight, like he was earlier this month. We just tried to get him the ball where he needed it. He bailed us out on quite a few broken plays." Hinrich himself finished with 12 points and 6 assists while Carlos Boozer contributed 12 points and 9 rebounds.

For the Pacers, Jonathan Bender scored 14 points while grabbing four rebounds and handing out three assists. Ron Artest also contributed 16 points, four assists and two steals while Fred Jones scored 12 points off the bench, filling in for Stephen Jackson who played only 19 minutes due to foul trouble and fouled out late in the fourth quarter.

The Bulls now return to Chicago for a four game home stand after playing 10 of their 12 games in January on the road.

Notes: Kyle Korver missed his second straight game with a toe injury. He is expected to return this Saturday when the Bulls host the Sacramento Kings...Gordon remains in third place in scoring average on the season, behind Dirk Nowitzki and Baron Davis...the Bulls won the battle of the boards 30-21, however the Pacers had the advantage on the offensive glass 11-8...Chicago were 12/14 from the free throw line. Indiana were 8/10.

Current Record: 36-5
Next Game: vs Sacramento Kings; 20-25 (February 3rd)

So that does it for January. I'll have the monthly recap out soon.

You should do something about your defensive rebounding. You have great rebounders in Chandler, Boozer and Deng, yet you are constantly being out-rebounded big on the offensive glass.
