Boston (105) at Cleveland (98)
Cavs fall to Celtics in home opener
The Boston Celtics rode a 17-2 run in the closing minutes and a 32-15 advantage at the free throw line to a 105-98 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers to open the 2009/2010 NBA season. Paul Pierce led the Celtics with 23 points and all five Celtics starters scored in double digits with Eddie House scoring 17 off the bench to overcome a 44 point performance from the reigning MVP LeBron James.
It was a disappointing turn of events for the Cavaliers, who held several double digit leads throughout the game and appeared to be on the verge of closing out the Celtics before the 2008 NBA Champions made their tenacious run in the game's waning minutes. "We choked that one away," James commented after the game. "We missed way too many easy ones, got frustrated and didn't do a good job defensively. It's not the way we wanted to start the season." James also had 9 rebounds and 3 assists in the game and was showered with "M-V-P" chants every time he stepped to the line beginning in the third quarter.
Cleveland began the game by racing out to an early 8-2 lead and although the Celtics would recover, the Cavaliers spent most of the first half in control of the game before yielding a twelve point lead and led by just four at halftime. Although they would build a more comfortable ten point margin in the third, they relinquished the lead in the final minute before LeBron was drew a foul on a made three pointer with 1.1 seconds left in the quarter, converting on the four point play to enter the fourth quarter with a three point lead. Although Boston seemed to be on the verge of a loss with three minutes remaining and the Cavaliers gaining momentum, two costly turnovers and a three pointer by Ray Allen propelled them right back into the game and sparked a run that had the Cavs reeling.
A visibly disappointed Mike Brown said of the loss "We played really good basketball for about 40 minutes. We had (the Celtics) where we wanted them but we couldn't deliver the knockout punch." When asked about the free throw discrepency, Brown downplayed the issue but admitted that "it hurt us, especially in the fourth". Shaquille O'Neal, making his official debut for the Cleveland Cavaliers, was slightly less diplomatic. "We were screwed," the future Hall of Famer bluntly remarked. "Next question."
The Cavaliers travel to Toronto tomorrow to face the Raptors in their opening game of the 2009/2010 season. The Celtics will be at home against the Charlotte Bobcats.
