Nets President Rod Thorn Discusses the Vince Carter Trade

Hours after acquiring five-time NBA All-Star Vince Carter from the Toronto Raptors, team president Rod Thorn held a conference call to discuss the trade and the players involved deal.

On Aaron Williams:
Aaron Williams was the first guy I signed when I came here. He's done a great job for us, a class guy. He's been with us over four years and done nothing but good things for our team. We wish him nothing but success.
On Eric Williams:
Eric Williams, who got off to a little bit of a slow start for us this year, had played great over the last three weeks. He really wanted to come back here and be in Newark. He's just a solid pro, a tough young man who comes to play every night. He's a very good defender and did a really good job for us. I've got nothing but good things to say about him.
On Alonzo Mourning:
With Alonzo, it just didn't work out. Last year he was injured and this year he wanted to be elsewhere. He had some good moments for us this year. He just wasn't happy here and obviously he wanted to be someplace else and now he gets that opportunity. I wish him well, too.
On Vince Carter:
Vince Carter is one of those special talents. When he's healthy, he's right up in the top tier of the league. We look forward, assuming that everyone's going to pass their physicals, to putting him in our lineup. With he and Jason and Richard, we're going to have a very exciting trio.
Were Jason Kidd's feeling put into play?
I can't speculate along those lines. From my perspective, I just felt it was something that would be a big plus for our franchise. To have a player of this (skill) on your team obviously is a plus. I think that Jason will enjoy playing with Vince. They teamed-up really well in the 2000 Olympics as well as other places they've played over the course of their careers, All-Star games, etc. I think it has potential to be a very exciting team. As far as what anybody thinks, I can't speak for anybody. I'm just trying to make our team better and trying to get as many good players as I can.
How was the trade initiated?
We called them. There were a lot of things going on. It was obvious that (Carter) might be traded. We had conversations, both Ed (Stefanski) and I, with Toronto over the last couple of days. I've had a bunch of different conversations with Rob Babcock (Toronto General Manager) regarding it. I think from their standpoint, being able to acquire two first-round draft picks as well as the players they got made it palatable from their standpoint. Obviously from ours, it's the quality of the player. It took a long time. This happened over the course of a conversation or two. There were a lot of different things to talk about.
Is the next step to address the front-court?
You try to improve your team as you can when things present themselves. Sometimes they present themselves when you're not even thinking about it. We will continue to work here to try to keep making our team better. We still have work to do but we'll continue to try to make it better.
Is this one of the things that presented itself when you weren't thinking about it?
On the surface, I didn't know -- other than having to give up a Richard or a Jason -- if we had what we needed to get him or to get that kind of player. You never know until you ask. You never know until you inquire. So, that's why general managers have conversations on a regular basis because you never know when you might get the right formula.
Is this a move to keep Kidd long-term?
We certainly anticipate that. We're very happy with what we've seen with Jason since his recovery from his surgery. He appears to be moving very well. Obviously, Jason is more effective if you play an up-tempo game. With a player like Carter, he is certainly good in an up-tempo game as well as a half-court game. I think it will make Jason more successful to have a player like this out there.
Did Vince ask if Jason would be with the team beyond this year?
No, he didn't. We had a two or three minute conversation. I talked to him about what I thought he could do for us. He said he was very excited about it that he enjoyed playing with Jason and Richard and he's looking forward to being here. There was some general chit-chat stuff but it was never broached.
Concern over taking a guy whom is injury-prone?
That's why we have physicals to see if everything is structurally sound. That's why in the vast majority of cases when you do trades you always do physicals. My feeling, as I've said previously, is that when Carter is healthy he certainly is among the top players in the NBA.
Is Carter the one guy in the league who can sell tickets and put bodies in the seats?
He's a very exciting player. He's a charismatic player. Fans enjoy watching him. He can do things athletically. He has hand-eye coordination that most others dream about. I think it's fair to say the he's one of those players who has the ability to attract fans.
Does this trade make the Nets more of a playoff contender?
Obviously, when you make a move like this you're hoping to get in there. I think if we can get in there we'll be a formidable foe for anybody. But again, from our standpoint, we gave up players who were 32, 32, and 34 years old. We pick up a guy who's 27-years old, one of the top athletes in the league, just coming into his prime. From that standpoint, we just felt it was a good move for our team.
It looks like you're not rebuilding anymore?
I think it's a statement from ownership that we're willing to spend on a quality player. Obviously, Carter is. We want to win. We're here to win. We're not here to wait three or four years and hope that our draft choices pan out, although we still do have three first-round draft picks in the next two years. We're trying to win! I think it says something about ownership.
What do you attribute to Carter's decline in scoring? Where does he stand as a player now?
I don't know about that. I watch a lot of games and have seen him play some very good games this year and some not so good. He was very good against us when we played them here a week or so ago. Athletically, he looked as if he hadn't lost a thing. He was very good. There are inner discussions around every team that I'm not aware of. Obviously, he wasn't happy. Obviously, they wanted to go in a different direction. That happens in this league.
Do you believe his situation "devalued" him and made it easier to get him?
I don't know. That's hard to say. There were other teams who had an interest, varying degrees of interest. I don't know what to say there, maybe.
Were you surprised you could get him without giving up Kidd or Jefferson?
Initially, yes I was. However, it became evident through conversations that draft picks would work. We had draft picks and that was a very important part of it. Then it became a matter of matching salaries and having players they were interested in taking.
