Welcome to the story thread for my NBA 2K14 MyCAREER on PlayStation 4 (played on PlayStation 5)! I've been meaning to create this for a while, but I've just been so hooked on playing the game that I'm now four seasons in! That's a fair amount to catch up on, so in addition to an overview of my career that I'll keep updated as necessary, I've posted a recap of major changes in the league since 2013-2014, a list of generated players who are emerging stars, and so on. You'll also find links to main page articles that I've written about this MyCAREER, and I also post screenshots and quick updates over on my Twitter if you'd like to follow me there.

With that being said, I'm picking up the story about halfway through Year 4 - the 2017 season - including some monthly recaps. I'll have regular updates and in-universe articles from here on out. Finally, in case you're wondering, the title comes from a line uttered during the introductory cutscene. It's been a fun journey so far, and I'd love to be able to play right through to the current day. I hope you'll enjoy the story as it continues to unfold!

A-Train: On Track For Even More Success
By Skip T. Grind

Image
A-Train's journey has gone from underdog success story to a tale for the ages

It only seems like yesterday that Andrew Begley and Philadelphia 76ers fans alike were frustrated with his lack of court time. However, after three championships and with eyes locked on winning a fourth, those early frustrations are rapidly becoming a distant memory for the man the Philly faithful have dubbed A-Train.

Begley arrived in Philadelphia with the eleventh pick of the 2013 Draft. That alone was a point of contention for the promising young point guard, given that long-time rival Jackson Ellis was selected by the Pistons three spots earlier. As A-Train himself admits, he had a chip on his shoulder when he joined the 76ers. That eagerness to prove himself was derailed when coach Brett Brown sat him for the first two games of the season.

"That was rough," Begley admits. "I felt that I'd showed what I could do in the Rookie Showcase, so slipping out of the top ten hurt my pride. Then, to not get onto the floor in the first couple of games...well, I was impatient."

His impatience led to a meeting in which A-Train pleaded his case for more minutes, a faux pas that a couple of his veteran teammates were quick to chide him for. When he looks back now, Begley still wishes he would've handled it differently. "It's tough. You need to stand up for yourself, but I made the mistake of bringing it up with Sam (Hinkie, the 76ers GM) instead of Coach Brown. Fortunately, he was far more level-headed than I was, and didn't hold it against me!"

A-Train's debut came abruptly and without fanfare, when fellow rookie Michael Carter-Williams suffered an injury in the 76ers' third game of the season. Although he impressed his coach, earning more minutes and putting up stats, Begley remained in a bench role for the next 29 games. "I wanted to start," he confesses now, "but after I put my foot in my mouth early on, I just tried to focus on helping us win any way I could when I was on the floor."

An ankle injury put A-Train on the shelf for four games in January, but he was soon back on the court and turning in performances that made the league take notice. He was an All-Star as a rookie, and in 76 games, averaged 29.1 ppg, 9.1 rpg, 10.9 apg, 3 spg, and 1.3 bpg as the 76ers went 67-15. Before the season, Sam Hinkie had urged fans that they should "trust the process", but said process was yielding results much earlier than anyone had anticipated.

No one had expected the Philadelphia 76ers and Portland Trail Blazers to make the NBA Finals in 2014. Nevertheless, both teams defeated heavyweights on route to their clash for the championship. The 76ers, who had only lost one game before the final round, suffered a second loss in Game 4 before clinching their first title since 1983 on their home floor in Game 5. For A-Train, overlooked in the 2013 Draft and battling for minutes from day one, it couldn't have been more gratifying.

"I knew that I could help us given the chance, but I needed guidance," Begley says. In particular, he points to veterans Thaddeus Young and Jason Richardson. "Thad looked out for me from the beginning, encouraging me, watching game tape," he explains. "J-Rich...well, J-Rich kept me humble when he had me wearing that clown nose all the time!" For his part, Richardson agrees he was tough on a rookie A-Train, but says "He took it all in stride, and showed he was committed to the team. I loved playing with him."

Young agrees. "He's still the same guy he was when he came into the league." He laughs. "Well, maybe a bit more mature! But he's still humble, and still loves seeing his teammates get buckets." That love of assists saw A-Train set a league record with 15.4 apg in his sophomore campaign. Even more impressively, he poured in 36.7 ppg to lead the league in both categories, and added 11.4 rpg for the first triple-double average since Oscar Robertson in 1962. He also added 5.6 spg and 2.3 bpg, becoming the first player to lead the league in all five major statistical categories in a season.

The 76ers had entered the 2015 season with plenty of confidence, especially after acquiring Carmelo Anthony in the offseason. Another championship followed a record-tying 72-10 regular season; the 76ers lost their season finale to the Hawks, missing out on breaking the mark set by the 1996 Chicago Bulls. Philadelphia's postseason performance did 76ers alum Moses Malone proud though, as they went "fo', fo', fo', fo'" and swept their way to a second consecutive title.

Their encore in the 2016 season was even more impressive, with a 77-5 record and another undefeated postseason, dismantling the Minnesota Timberwolves who had upset LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, and the Los Angeles Lakers after coming back from 3-1 down in the Western Conference Finals. The win was bittersweet though, as Melo tore his MCL in the Eastern Conference Finals, having hyperextended it late in the season. His absence didn't stand in the way of another ring, but it was a cloud lingering over their championship parade. Melo has yet to play in the 2017 season.

Begley also repeated his feats of averaging a triple-double, and leading the league in every category with 35.8 ppg, 12.3 rpg, 15.8 apg, 5.7 spg, and 2.4 bpg in 2016. In doing so, he also became the first player to amass 2000 points, 1000 rebounds, and 1000 assists in a single season. His trophy case continued to fill. In addition to a third championship, he was named Most Valuable Player, Finals MVP, and Defensive Player of the Year for a third time. While he was accustomed to stardom however, A-Train's third season placed him in a new role: mentor.

Philadelphia hadn't counted on Pittsburgh's Terry Hanson still being available at the 30th pick of the 2015 Draft, but they weren't going to think twice about drafting him. The rookie swingman found himself in the starting lineup immediately due to the departure of Jason Richardson, playing alongside Begley in the backcourt. Although Hanson struggled in his first few games, A-Train took the rookie under his wing. "I told him I've been where he is, and not to worry. We know he's talented, and we've got his back. I wanted to look out for him, just like Thad and J-Rich mentored me when I was a rookie."

Hanson was a surprising snub for Rookie of the Year, though the Milwaukee Bucks' Pat Clemons did have a fine season of his own, leading all first year players in steals and assists. It was Hanson who had the opportunity to compete for a championship though, and he stepped up admirably in Melo's absence. He's taken his game to the next level this season, averaging over 29 ppg; second only to his teammate, A-Train. He's also the beneficiary of several of A-Train's assists, for which he's most grateful. "I was hurt when I dropped to 30th, but I don't mind anymore!" Hanson recently said.

As the 2017 season reaches its midpoint, A-Train is on track for even more success. For the third consecutive year, he's averaging a triple-double while leading the league in all five categories. The 76ers are 40-0 on the season, quickly approaching the 45-game winning streak that they had last year. At the risk of jinxing them, a fourth title looks extremely likely. The only concern? A-Train hasn't been signed long-term. There are questions as to whether a potential fourth title will be their last, or whether they'll be able to keep him around for a shot at five or more.

For now though, the 76ers are rolling, and Begley seems to be happy where he is. "The 76ers took a chance on me, and have given me a ton of opportunities," he says. "Do I feel like I could've been picked higher? Sure, but then I wouldn't be here. I wouldn't have the memories I do, or the success we've had as a team. I wouldn't have had the opportunity to play with these guys. I wouldn't trade that for anything." As for the 76ers, the relationship has clearly been mutually beneficial. It may well yield a fourth straight title, while A-Train continues to add to his Hall of Fame resume. At this point, it looks like only bad luck could stop him in his tracks.

By Steven Z. Smyth

Image
Could A-Train and D-Rose be swapping jerseys at the end of the year?

As we approach the midpoint of the 2017 NBA season, the Philadelphia 76ers are far and away favourites to win their fourth consecutive championship. They're 40-0, and their star point guard, Andrew Begley, continues to put up numbers for the ages. Even without Melo, the 76ers are dominating, thanks in no small part to the continued rise of sensational sophomore Terry Hanson. Things are looking good in the City of Brotherly Love.

However, there's a problem looming on the horizon. Should the 76ers win a fourth straight title this year, their Drive for Five will need to begin with retaining Begley. The man they call A-Train hasn't yet signed an extension, and some insiders say that there's concern that he won't. A-Train hasn't made a comment either way, but as the saying goes, actions speak louder than words.

Obviously, the uncertainty of their mutual future hasn't affected A-Train's play, or the 76ers' success to date. However, there are rumblings that A-Train is miffed that the team was quick to sign fellow Class of 2013 alumni Nerlens Noel and Michael Carter-Williams to extensions - to the tune of $30.6 million over two years and $27.2 million over three years respectively - while not discussing a new deal with him. As a three-time MVP, Finals MVP, Defensive Player of the Year, All-Star, and champion - and averaging a triple-double for the third consecutive season - A-Train should command a lot more than that.

While Begley's alleged frustration remains a rumour for now, the fact that he hasn't signed an extension is concerning. If the team is dragging their feet, then they're bungling the situation by not securing the services of their star playmaker well in advance. If it's A-Train who's stalling, then it's a sign that he's at least keeping his options open and that staying isn't a lock. If so, how likely is he to leave Philadelphia?

It's well-documented that as a young basketball fan with dreams of making it to the NBA, A-Train's favourite team was the Chicago Bulls. As an admirer of the great Michael Jordan, there's a possibility that he might want to take his talents to the Windy City. Derrick Rose's future with the Bulls is also uncertain with his contract up at the end of this season. If Rose walks, then Chicago will undoubtedly be interested in the services of A-Train.

Begley also squashed his beef with Jackson Ellis, who has gone on record saying that he'd love to play with his former nemesis. Ellis isn't a free agent until 2019 though, and A-Train seems unlikely to head to the Pistons. With both players being point guards who love to dish out assists, the former rivals aren't a great fit to become the next big dynamic duo, either. Also, even with their rivalry a thing of the past, it's questionable as to whether either of them could stand to play second fiddle to the other, night in and night out.

No doubt there are other teams that would jump at the opportunity to sign A-Train, but that interest may not be mutual. There's also still a good chance that he stays in Philadelphia. While he's admitted to growing up a fan of MJ and the Bulls, he's also spoken about how he admires players who remained loyal to their teams. A-Train has little left to prove in Philadelphia after three titles; at this point, he's simply adding to a legacy. To that point however, remaining a 76er would afford him the opportunity to lead them to dominance on par with Jordan's Bulls, or maybe even Bill Russell's Boston Celtics.

However, the biggest advantage the 76ers have as far as being able to keep A-Train is Terry Hanson. A-Train took a rookie Hanson under his wing last year, at one point declaring his intention to help him win Rookie of the Year. Though Hanson lost out on the award to the Milwaukee Bucks' Pat Clemons, he had an outstanding freshman campaign, and has upped his scoring average by over 10 ppg this season. He's been the recipient of many of A-Train's assists, and fans have delighted in seeing the duo frequently connecting on alley-oops. It's no secret that A-Train loves playing with Hanson, and the two have formed a close friendship.

As one league insider put it, A-Train's future in Philadelphia depends greatly on what happens with Terry Hanson. If Hanson were to be traded, it's likely that A-Train would follow him there as soon as possible, or at the very least, see little reason to stay in Philadelphia. Likewise, if Hanson remains a part of the 76ers' long-term plans, it'll make it extremely tough for A-Train to leave. Philadelphia hasn't picked up the third and fourth year options on Hanson's rookie contract as yet, but it's assumed they will as soon as they can. They'd certainly be wise to do so; not only is he too good to let walk, but if he leaves, it'll almost definitely mean losing A-Train as well.

Of course, even though Sam Hinkie's infamous "process" has yielded three straight championships and positioned the 76ers to be in the running for a fourth, the team has made some questionable moves. Last year, they traded fan favourite Spencer Hawes to the Cleveland Cavaliers for disgruntled forward Tristan Thompson. Thompson wasn't much happier in Philly, even after winning a championship. The 76ers sent him back to Cleveland in December, ridding themselves of a headache and acquiring a solid backup point guard in Jarrett Jack. Incidentally, Thompson is once again asking for a trade. Hopefully, Hinkie doesn't believe second time's the charm.

Speaking of trades, the 76ers also traded their first and second round picks in 2017 to the Washington Wizards for Trevor Booker. Booker has yet to play for the 76ers, making an already surprising deal look even more odd. It hasn't interfered with their winning ways, but if Philadelphia are unable to retain talented players and continue to surround Begley with the help he needs, it will no doubt test his loyalty. Hanson may be the key, but if they lose Carmelo Anthony, or A-Train's mentor Thaddeus Young, it may drive the three-time All-Star out of town. He was reportedly unhappy that they failed to re-sign Jason Richardson in 2015, though the acquisition of Hanson soon smoothed over that potential rift.

While we're on the subject of Carmelo Anthony, he's expected to return within the next couple of months. The team has been winning without him, which is reportedly not sitting well with Melo. With Hanson's emergence as one of the league's top scorers this year, one has to wonder how well Melo will fit in the 76ers' lineup when he returns. When A-Train was asked about the situation, he downplayed concern. "We want Melo back, doing what he does best. We're not worried about him fitting in, and he'll only help us when he returns." Despite this endorsement, sources say that Melo remains anxious about his future in Philadelphia.

Should A-Train leave, the 76ers will have still had an incredible run, amassing three championships with the possibility of a fourth when it's all said and done. Philly fans being the passionate group that they are, I expect it will make him Public Enemy #1 if he bolts, though it'll be impossible to argue that he didn't do everything he possibly could do during his 76ers tenure. It will be much more of an indictment of the 76ers' front office than a stain on A-Train's legacy if he walks. They've already gotten a career's worth of value out of him, at a bargain price while he's still on his rookie contract. More money, new challenges, and appropriate respect, may lure him away.

Until then, the 76ers will likely keep storming through the league, as they strive to become the first undefeated team in NBA history on route to another championship. So far, any concerns about A-Train's future don't appear to have affected their on-court chemistry, and that likely won't change. Still, even if they do hoist the Larry O'Brien trophy for the fourth straight year in June, they won't have much time to celebrate before addressing their future. We'll see if their past decisions come back to haunt them, or if they'll continue to terrorise the league for years to come.

As a Sixers fan, would've greatly benefitted from this happening in real life...an alternative "The Process"! Ideally with so much success, surely you head to the biggest rebuild for the biggest challenge?

It's going to be a tough decision! Part of me wouldn't mind going somewhere completely unexpected and turning another underdog or up-and-coming team into a powerhouse. It's going to be really hard to avoid the temptation of going to the Bulls if I can, too.

However, I'm honestly not against sticking with the 76ers, if only until the end of Terry Hanson's contract if the game allows me to negotiate a short term deal (I haven't actually experienced free agency in NBA 2K14 MyCAREER yet). I do actually like the idea of playing a full career (or most of it) with one team like many of the players I admired growing up, so I'm bringing that into the role-play of my MyPLAYER. Terry Hanson is also one of the most fun generated rookies I've had in a franchise or career mode. I haven't really made up my mind yet, and it's actually kind of fun to be pulled in several directions with the eventual decision!

Wow 'Drew, those are some REAL stats. As Jubba said, definitely an alternate Process you went through with Philly.

I guess seeing you in Chicago next season just feels right!

It really is tempting to take my talents to the Windy City! I probably won't make up my mind until I've got the options in front of me.

Spotlight Game: Lakers @ 76ers, January 25th 2017

Image

PHILADELPHIA, PA -- Despite entering the game with a 21-24 record, the Los Angeles Lakers looked confident that they would be the team to finally take a win from the undefeated Philadelphia 76ers. By halftime however, they already looked deflated.

The defending champion 76ers ran their winning streak to 43 games, just two short of their record-setting 45-game winning streak set last season. As usual, it was Andrew Begley who led the way with another triple-double of 40 points, 16 rebounds, and 12 assists. Terry Hanson added 22 points, and a total of six 76ers scored in double figures as the champs rolled to an easy 132-100 victory.

Jordan Farmar led the Lakers in scoring in the loss, tallying 21 points and knocking down five three-pointers. Superstar LeBron James had an uncharacteristically quiet evening, scoring just 12 points to go along with two rebounds and four assists. Laker Legend Kobe Bryant, who surprised fans and pundits alike when he announced he was returning for his 21st NBA season, scored 10 points.

Los Angeles matched Philadelphia's energy early on, but trailed 36-27 by the end of the first quarter. The 76ers went on one of their trademark runs in the second quarter, building a comfortable 20-point lead by halftime and never looking back. LA raised the white flag with both LeBron and Kobe taking an early seat once the game was blown wide open.

"They're on a mission," Kobe said of his hometown team after the game. "They want to have the first undefeated season in history. Coming in, we wanted to be the ones who spoiled it. We didn't match their effort. All credit to them."

The pairing of Kobe and LeBron hasn't produced the results that Lakers fans were hoping for when James signed with the team in the offseason of 2014. He missed most of the 2015 season with a knee injury, and although he came back strong in the 2016 campaign, the Lakers blew a 3-1 lead to the Minnesota Timberwolves in last year's Western Conference Finals.

In the offseason, the Lakers hired Gregg Popovich, who was surprisingly let go by the Spurs after more than twenty years as a coach and executive in San Antonio. The addition of the legendary coach to a team boasting a dynamic duo of future Hall of Famers hasn't helped so far, as the Lakers haven't had a winning record all season. A broken finger sidelined Bryant early on, but even after his return, the Lakers remain outside the top eight in the West as the season approaches its midway point.

Pops was customarily terse after the loss to the 76ers. "Tough night," he commented. When asked what the Lakers could've done to win, he simply responded "Score more points." As glib of a response as it may be, the Lakers have struggled to put points on the board this season, ranking 22nd in the league in scoring, though they rank 15th in opponent's points per game.

As for the 76ers, their confidence is clearly sky high. The team hasn't lost a game since last April, having swept their way to a third consecutive championship in the 2016 Playoffs. Although questions have arisen over whether Begley will remain a Sixer beyond this season, the team appears focused on competing for a fourth straight title.

"I'm not looking beyond the next game," A-Train told reporters after the win. "We'll sort all that out when the time comes. I love playing for this team, and I want to do everything I can to bring more success to Philadelphia. I'm not a free agent until my contract expires. That's when we'll talk about the future. Until then, I've got work to do."

The 76ers face the Nets in Brooklyn on Friday, while the Lakers will be in Milwaukee to take on the Bucks.

Michael Carter-Williams Out for Season With Torn MCL; Other 76ers Also Hobbled

Image

PHILADELPHIA, PA -- Philadelphia 76ers guard Michael Carter-Williams has been ruled out for the season after suffering a torn MCL in the team's 109-95 victory over the Brooklyn Nets on Friday.

Carter-Williams crumpled to the floor clutching his knee with just under five minutes remaining in the first half. An MRI later confirmed the MCL tear, and Carter-Williams is scheduled to undergo surgery next week.

"Michael has been an important part of our success so far this season," 76ers coach Johnny Davis said. "We're all behind him, and look forward to having him back on the court when the time comes." A first round pick in 2013, Carter-Williams has been averaging a career high 7.2 ppg and 3.9 apg this season, and recently signed a three-year, $27.19 million extension.

Forward Marvin Williams has also been diagnosed with a strained MCL after complaining of knee soreness after the game. Arnett Moultrie was already listed as day-to-day with a sprained ankle, and sat out the game against the Nets as a precaution. All-Star Carmelo Anthony is still estimated to be a month or two away from returning from his torn MCL, which he suffered in last year's Playoffs.

Tony Wroten is expected to start in Carter-Williams' place when the 76ers play host to the Orlando Magic this evening.

2017 All-Star Weekend Recap

Image

East All-Stars Earn Back-to-Back Bragging Rights

Image

Image

Image

It didn't take any last second heroics this time, but another spectacular All-Star Game performance by Andrew Begley led the East to back-to-back victories in the NBA's midseason classic. A-Train, whose hit the gamewinner in the 2016 game after leading a furious fourth quarter rally, scored 42 points to go along with 16 assists, seven rebounds, five steals, and six blocks in a 128-116 win. Russell Westbrook led the West with 28 points.

The West held onto a slight 29-26 edge at the end of the first quarter, as both teams exchanged buckets and delighted fans with multiple lobs and emphatic dunks. It wasn't long before both teams were playing more competitively though, with the East making a push to capture the lead by halftime. They ran away with the game in the third quarter, outscoring the West 38-21. The West made a spirited run in the fourth to close the gap, but the East never relinquished the lead, with A-Train putting an exclamation point on the game with a vicious windmill on Anthony Davis.

Despite being part of a losing effort, LeBron James - who had 16 points, eight assists, and six steals - saw a silver lining. He spoke highly of Davis and Westbrook after the game, remarking that he'd "love to play with them" in Los Angeles. The Pelicans and Thunder are currently tied for the fourth best record in the league, while the Lakers are tenth in the conference.

Celtics' star Mark Everett had a strong showing, scoring 30 points while tallying nine rebounds and seven assists. Terry Hanson, the league's second-leading scorer behind his teammate A-Train, had nine points in 11 minutes off the bench. Jackson Ellis was a late scratch due to knee soreness, and was unable to be replaced at such short notice. In addition to making his first All-Star appearance, it would've been Ellis' first time playing alongside long-time rival-turned-friend A-Train.

Kevin Durant, Chris Paul, Kyrie Irving, and Josh Smith also scored in double figures. Paul matched LeBron with a team-high eight assists, but was just 1-for-7 from downtown. LeBron, famous for his chasedown blocks, was twice swatted by Begley to prevent fast break buckets after forcing the turnover.

Leroy Carter Leads Elites to Victory in Rising Stars

Image

Image

Kurt Sherman may have been the first overall pick last June and an All-Star for the West as a rookie, but friendly rival Leroy Carter won their latest battle in the Rising Stars game. The fourth overall pick by the Kings scored a game-high 29 points to lead the Elites to a 97-92 victory over the Stars. He was aided by last season's Rookie of the Year Pat Clemons, who added 17 points and had four assists in the win.

The Clippers' Cam O'Connor led the Stars in scoring with 19, while All-Star sophomore Terry Hanson had 16 points, eight rebounds, and four assists. Sherman had 11 points and seven rebounds in a game that had a surprising amount of defense for a Rising Stars contest. "I think we all wanted to show that we're worth watching as much as the big game on Sunday," Carter told reporters afterwards.

Malik Garrett, Jordan Crawford Shine on All-Star Saturday

Image

Image

Indiana Pacers rookie Malik Garrett stood tall at the end of All-Star Saturday, after he was crowned the new Slam Dunk King. Garrett defeated Andrew Begley, Nerlens Noel, and Sarunas Tavcar in the Slam Dunk Contest, stunning the crowd with a 360 honey-dip in the final round.

Meanwhile, Charlotte Bobcats sharpshooter Jordan Crawford captured the Three-Point Shootout crown. The journeyman is leading the Bobcats in scoring this season with 21.1 ppg, and is making a little over 2.5 threes per game at a 37% clip. He edged out fellow marksmen Klay Thompson, Terry Hanson, Nicolas Batum, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, and Kyrie Irving to take home the trophy, with a score of 20 in the final round.

Questions for the Second Half of the 2017 Season
By Skip T. Grind

Image
It's been an incredible first half for 76ers All-Stars A-Train and Hanson

The 2017 NBA All-Star Weekend is in the books, and the second half of the season is upon us! With the race to the Playoffs officially underway, there are some burning questions throughout the league. Let's make some predictions!

Will the 76ers go undefeated?

Philadelphia entered the All-Star break with a 52-0 record, as they continue to set the mark for excellence. But can they go undefeated the rest of the way? They've had some close calls this season including a nail-biter against the Thunder, but A-Train and Terry Hanson don't seem keen on letting the club ruin their perfect streak. With Melo returning soon, they'll be an even tougher opponent.

Prediction: Yes, with some more close calls along the way

Will the 76ers finish with two 30+ ppg scorers?

At the season's midseason point, the 76ers boast the league's top two scorers: A-Train (33.8 ppg) and Hanson (30.0 ppg). They've been an unstoppable duo all year, with A-Train scoring a new career-high of 76 points, while Hanson has also poured in a career-best 51. No doubt they'll continue to dazzle Philly fans, but Hanson's average is right on the 30 ppg mark, and could easily slip lower by the end of the year.

Prediction: No, but it'll be very close, and they'll remain the top two

Can the Los Angeles Lakers make the Playoffs?

Disappointing. That's the word that describes the team-up of LeBron James and Kobe Bryant in Los Angeles, especially now they've been joined by legendary coach Gregg Popovich. An injury to LeBron derailed their first season together, while their second ended with a shocking defeat in the Western Conference Finals after the Minnesota Timberwolves came back after being down 3-1. They're currently tenth in the West with a 24-31 record - two games behind the eighth-seeded Kings - and limped into the break with a 3-7 record over their last ten games.

Prediction: Nope, the Lakers are lottery bound

Is this the Trail Blazers' year?

Portland surprised everyone when they made an underdog run all the way to the NBA Finals in 2014, and even took a game from the Philadelphia 76ers to avoid a sweep. They've since been one of the best teams in the West for the past couple of years...in the regular season. After two straight first round meltdowns, the pressure is on for the Trail Blazers to be a team that plays like a contender from start to finish.

Prediction: They'll break the first round curse, but get no further than the second round

Where will A-Train end up after this season?

The 76ers haven't signed their star point guard to an extension yet, despite locking up fellow Class of 2013 alumni Michael Carter-Williams and Nerlens Noel. Rumours persist that he may be moving on, possibly replacing Derrick Rose in Chicago. However, it's well-known that A-Train loves playing with Terry Hanson, and values loyalty. It hasn't affected the 76ers' season, but whatever happens, the offseason is going to be very interesting.

Prediction: Philadelphia most likely (possibly on a shorter contract), followed by Chicago

Bulls or Pistons?

With the 76ers holding a comfortable lead for first place in the East, the Chicago Bulls and Detroit Pistons are battling it out for second place. The Bulls have lost to the 76ers in the Conference Finals the last two seasons, but this year, it looks like the Pistons may have their turn at taking on the champs. It'll likely remain a see-saw battle the rest of the way, with the two teams clashing in the second round to see who gets the chance to dethrone the 76ers.

Prediction: Pistons, behind the ever-improving play of Jackson Ellis, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, and veteran Josh Smith

Who comes out of the West?

If the top contenders in the East are the 76ers, Pistons, and Bulls, who are the frontrunners to come out of the West? Defending conference champs the Timberwolves are having a fine season despite losing Derrick Williams for the year, and are eager to prove the naysayers wrong after getting blown out in a Finals sweep. The Clippers are currently atop the West, but tend to fizzle in the postseason. As mentioned, the Blazers are battling a first round curse. The Thunder and Pelicans loom as wildcards behind the top three.

Prediction: Thunder, though if recent history is anything to go by, the seventh-seeded Jazz are just as likely to come out of the Wild West

It should be an entertaining second half of the season, and offseason, as we await the answers to these questions!

Philadelphia 76ers Extend Streak to 54, Clinch Playoff Berth

Image

PHILADELPHIA, PA -- The reigning champion Philadelphia 76ers will have an opportunity to defend their crown and win a fourth consecutive championship come the 2017 Playoffs.

With their record-setting 54th consecutive win this season, the 76ers have officially clinched a Playoff berth. Despite the prospect of playing most of the season without All-Star forward Carmelo Anthony, the 76ers are currently attempting to become the first NBA team to have an undefeated season.

The champs haven't lost since last April, having completed a clean sweep of the Playoffs on route to a threepeat. With the emergence of Terry Hanson as an All-Star and Melo expected to be back within 4-6 weeks, the 76ers are looking formidable as the Playoff picture begins to take shape.

A-Train Scores 10,000th Career Point

Image

PHILADELPHIA, PA -- Reigning MVP and three-time champion Andrew Begley has added another accolade to his resume. A-Train scored his 10,000th career point in a 135-104 victory over the Detroit Pistons, with a short hook over long-time rival Jackson Ellis late in the fourth quarter.

A-Train reached the 10,000-point plateau in his 295th NBA game, the second-fewest outings behind Wilt Chamberlain's 236. Wilt, who won a title with the 76ers in 1967, scored 31,419 points in 1045 career games and was a seven-time scoring champion with a career average of 30.1 ppg. Begley is currently on pace to win his third consecutive scoring crown with an average of 33.9 ppg this season, matching his current career average.

In addition to scoring 33 points to finish the night with 10,002 on his career, Begley also handed out 20 assists to bump his season average to 16.6 per game. Should he maintain that average and play every game remaining on the Philadelphia 76ers' schedule, he'll break his own records for total assists and assists per game in a single season.
