It was always going to be a big ask with so many good teams in the west. Houston went 14-1 this month and shot from 13th to 3rd. Utah could maybe do something similar if they figure things out, and I don't see any of the teams above us falling down the standings from this point on.

It might be time to start looking at trading out some veterans if we can't get above .500 by the end of January.

Adams making the all-star game is also looking like a long-shot now (unless there is more to it than just total votes?)

He likely won't get in as a starter if he's that far behind in the voting, but he could get named as a reserve if his numbers stay strong.

For over three quarters neither team led by more than 5 points. They got out to a 10 point lead in the final minutes though.

Adams fouled out with 55 seconds left in the game, but it was realistically over by that point.

It was probably a bit unfair of me to expect Chris Paul and Dennis Schroder to guard a 6'10" point guard

He does present a few matchup problems. At least he can't hit threes...yet.

Same with Giannis. If either had a reliable outside shot it would be genuinely impossible to stop them from scoring.

It's going to be a gamechanger if they develop their outside shots. On the other hand, that'll also mean less attempts at the rim, so it kind of evens out.

15/1/20

As trade deadline gets nearer, Thunder are reportedly taking calls on several players

Image

After the shock off-season departures of all-star duo Russell Westbrook and Paul George, the Oklahoma City Thunder were left with a group of odd-fitting pieces. They weren't expected to be anything other than a struggling mess this season.

But they surprised a lot of people by starting the season with a 16-20 record, before losing five of their next six games and now sit at 17-25 and hold the thirteenth seed. It puts them four games behind the eighth-seeded Minnesota Timberwolves.

Their playoff chances are looking pretty slim now, with the Timberwolves, Spurs, Blazers, Jazz all ahead of them in the race for the coveted eighth seed. It might be time for them to offload some of their veteran players and increase their already deep collection of draft assets.

There is now less than a month to go until the trade deadline.

-----

Veteran Chris Paul is the most obvious candidate to be traded, but is also probably the hardest player to move. There doesn't seem to be much interest around the league in trading for the 34-year-old who has $80 million left on his contract over the next two years, plus a $44 million player option thereafter.

Both Minnesota and Miami were said to have kicked the tyres on Paul just after he was traded to the Thunder, but neither ultimately got involved in any serious trade discussions with the Thunder. There could be renewed interested now though, with both teams battling to make the playoffs.

The Heat, despite the off-season addition of perennial all-star Jimmy Butler, are currently only sitting in twelfth place and find themselves two-and-a-half games behind eighth-seeded Atlanta. Perhaps they will be more willing to trade for Paul now that their push for the playoffs is running out of time.

Minnesota have fought their way to a 20-20 record up to this point of the season and hold the eighth seed in the western conference currently. If they could add Paul without giving up much more than Jeff Teague and Gorgui Dieng, then they would drastically improve their team. Paul could really be a big help in making their offense much more efficient.

Potential Trade Ideas

Miami: Chris Paul, Mike Muscala
Oklahoma City: Goran Dragic, James Johnson

Minnesota: Chris Paul, Nerlens Noel
Oklahoma City: Jeff Teague, Gorgui Dieng

Detroit: Chris Paul, Carmelo Anthony, Justin Patton
Oklahoma City: Reggie Jackson, Tony Snell, Langston Galloway, 2021 Lakers 2nd

-----

New Zealand big man Steven Adams has been attracting interesting across the league thanks to his amazing form so far this season. The 26-year-old is averaging career-highs in points, rebounds and blocks per game and is an outside chance of earning his first all-star selection.

Adams broke the Thunder's franchise record for most rebounds in a single game on November 27th against the Clippers. He pulled down an amazing 32 rebounds to go with his 31 points that night. He became only the fourth player in the past forty years to record a 30-30 game. He joins Dwight Howard, Kevin Love and Moses Malone in that exclusive group.

He has recorded at least 20 points and 15 rebounds in sixteen games this season. Eight times he has reached the 20 rebound mark and obviously one time he reached 30 rebounds in a game.

There is no doubt that many teams would love to acquire him, to add some muscle and defensive toughness to their rosters. Boston could really use him as a counter to the twin towers of Embiid and Horford in Philadelphia. Sacramento were reportedly interested during the off-season, before ultimately signing Dwayne Dedmon. Perhaps they will renew their interest.

One team who would be a great fit for Adams is the Atlanta Hawks. Their young core of Trae Young, John Collins, De'Andre Hunter, Cam Reddish, Kevin Huerter and Jabari Parker are exceeding expectations this season and have them sitting in eighth place in the eastern conference right now.

The one thing they need is a defensive anchor to play alongside Collins. At 26, Adams is still young enough to fit with their rebuild and his influence off the court would be massive for such a young group.

With the large expiring contracts of Chandler Parsons, Evan Turner and Allen Crabbe on their books, it's not hard to see them being able to offer a satisfactory deal to the Thunder. They also hold Brooklyn's 2020 first round pick, which could be used in negotiations.

Of course, Oklahoma City trading Adams is all speculation at this point. He has shown no sign that he is unhappy with his current situation and he has another year on his contract after this season. He is the type of guy who will probably end up re-signing with the Thunder on a team-friendly front-ended extension and help guide them through their rebuild.

Potential Trade Ideas

Atlanta: Steven Adams
Oklahoma City: Chandler Parsons, Bruno Fernando, 2020 Hawks 1st (Top 10 protected)

Boston: Steven Adams, Danilo Gallinari
Oklahoma City: Gordon Hayward, Jaylen Brown

Cleveland: Steven Adams, Danilo Gallinari
Oklahoma City: John Henson, Brandon Knight, Matthew Dellavedova, 2023 Cavs 1st

-----

Tenacious point guard Dennis Schroder is another player who has a few potential suitors. The 26-year-old German has been really solid in leading the Thunder's bench unit this season, averaging 12 points and 6 assists per game. That form has him as one of the favourites to win the Sixth Man of the Year award, alongside teammate Nerlens Noel.

If the Heat and Timberwolves decide not to pursue Chris Paul, then Schroder might be a better option for them. He is seven years younger and on about $20 million less per season. Dallas have been mentioned as a possible destination, but their lack of ability to trade out first round picks due to the Stepien Rule would make it hard for them to offer up a suitable deal.

One team that are said to be quietly tracking Schroder's availability is the Los Angeles Clippers. Their acquisitions of Kawhi Leonard and Paul George so far haven't turned them into the juggernaut that they had hoped, so perhaps the addition of a crafty playmaker like Schroder would help unlock their full offensive potential.

Potential Trade Ideas

Miami: Dennis Schroder
Oklahoma City: Goran Dragic, 2022 Nuggets 2nd

LA Clippers: Dennis Schroder, Mike Muscala
Oklahoma City: Maurice Harkless, JaMychal Green, 2020 Clippers 1st (Lottery protected)

Minnesota: Dennis Schroder
Oklahoma City: Jeff Teague, 2020 Timberwolves 2nd, 2022 Timberwolves 2nd

Dallas: Dennis Schroder
Oklahoma City: Courtney Lee, 2021 Mavericks 2nd, 2022 Mavericks 2nd

-----

Expiring veteran Danilo Gallinari will likely have several teams interested in his services, should he become available via trade. The 31-year-old Italian forward has had a reduced role this season since being traded to the Thunder, but he is still a very capable scorer. He would be a great pick-up for a playoff-bound team.

Two teams who could really use Gallinari are Cleveland and Toronto. The Cavs would love to add another wing scorer and have a bunch of expiring contracts which they could use in a trade. Whilst the Raptors could see Gallinari as a solid replacement for the departed Kawhi Leonard, who also won't disrupt their long-term cap space plans.

Potential Trade Ideas

Cleveland: Danilo Gallinari, Mike Muscala
Oklahoma City: Brandon Knight, Matthew Dellavedova, 2023 Cavs 1st

Toronto: Danilo Gallinari, Mike Muscala
Oklahoma City: Serge Ibaka, Terence Davis

-----

The last player who Oklahoma City will probably get enquiries about is center Nerlens Noel. The defensive specialist is having a fine season as Steven Adams' backup, averaging 11 points, 9 rebounds and 2 blocks per game. That form, coupled with the fact that he is expiring and will likely expect a big-money contract extension next season, make it likely that he will be traded before the deadline.

Teams who could use Noel include: Atlanta, Boston, Sacramento, Cleveland, San Antonio and Milwaukee. It's likely that any team that wants Noel would only have to part with a mid-to-late first round pick.

It has been speculated that the Thunder will keep only one of Adams and Noel for the long-term. So if one of them gets traded before the deadline, the other is probably sticking around.

Potential Trade Ideas

Atlanta: Nerlens Noel, Danilo Gallinari
Oklahoma City: Chandler Parsons, Alex Len, 2020 Hawks 1st (Top 10 protected)

Boston: Nerlens Noel
Oklahoma City: Brad Wanamaker, 2020 Bucks 1st (Top 5 protected)

Sacramento: Nerlens Noel, Danilo Gallinari
Oklahoma City: Bogdan Bogdanovic, Trevor Ariza, 2020 Pistons 2nd, 2020 Blazers 2nd

-----

As things currently stand, the Thunder would have the 7th overall pick in the 2020 draft. They also hold the rights to Denver's first round pick, which currently sits at pick 22. It's a decent hand to take into the draft, but it could be improved if they shed some veterans and tank the rest of the season (in order to worsen their record and move their pick further up the order).

Draft experts seem to suggest that this draft has two players who stand out above the rest; James Wiseman, a dynamic center out of Memphis, and Anthony Edwards, an explosive guard from Georgia. After that there are about half a dozen prospects who could be taken at pick 3.

Point guards LaMelo Ball and RJ Hampton are dominating in Australia's NBL this season and are tipped to be top five selections. But the Thunder are set with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, so neither of those players will likely be on their radar. Theo Maledon from France and Cole Anthony from North Carolina are also highly-rated points guards who could be high selections.

So the Thunder probably won't need a top five pick in order to get the player they want, because half of the top ten is filled by point guards in most mock drafts.

If Oklahoma City can acquire another pick or two in the 2020 draft, it wouldn't be a shock to see them package them up and try to move up the order on draft night. Whether that means trying to get into the top two so that they have a shot at Wiseman or Edwards, or simply trading a couple of picks in the teens to get another top ten pick remains to be seen.

With so many draft picks over the next few years, all eyes will be on Sam Presti and his team to see if they get it right. Nailing their 2020 picks won't make or break their rebuild, but it could really get it off to a strong start.

Trading CP3 at some point is the goal, but it's not absolutely vital. The upcoming crop of free agents isn't brilliant, which means I don't really need the cap room that his contact is taking up.

I also don't want to just do trades for the sake of it. If I can't find realistic deals that make sense for both teams, then I'll revisit it in the off-season when teams have more flexibility.

Haha, maybe.

I actually added Wilson Chandler's 25-game suspension into the game earlier in the season, so I can do the same for Ayton. But I think I'll wait for his appeal to happen first though, because I like seeing Phoenix high-up in the standings and I don't want to ruin their season.

Oklahoma City conclude two separate deals as their rebuild enters its next phase

Image

The Oklahoma City Thunder seem to enjoy dropping trades on us without warning, like the Paul George deal in 2017. So it comes as no great shock then that Sam Presti has just surprised us with two trade deals in as many days.

The first deal went down on Thursday morning and saw Nerlens Noel and Danilo Gallinari sent to the Atlanta Hawks. Then, just hours before a home game against the Detroit Pistons tonight, another trade sent point guard Dennis Schroder to Minnesota.

It has left Thunder fans trying to wrap their heads around just what happened and how it changed their team's position moving forward.

Most people expected Chris Paul to be the first player traded by Oklahoma City this season, but it seems as though the trade market for him is non-existent. His massive contract just makes him too unappealing for teams to take on right now.

------------------------------

Atlanta acquire Noel & Gallinari as they aim for deep playoff run

Atlanta have built up a really nice core of young talent over the past several drafts, with Trae Young, John Collins, Cam Reddish, Kevin Huerter and De'Andre Hunter. But one thing they have lacked is a defensive-minded big man to play alongside Collins and free him up to focus on the offensive side of the game.

That is why they jumped at the chance to acquire Nerlens Noel. The former sixth overall pick has been in stellar form this season as Steven Adams' backup, averaging 11 points, 9 rebounds and 1.7 blocks per game. He is one of the leading candidates for the Sixth Man of the Year award.

Joining the Hawks should give Noel his wish of being a starter on an NBA team again. Injuries and competition for spots have seen him reduced to a backup role for the past four seasons on three different teams.

The Hawks are currently sitting in sixth place in the eastern conference standings, mainly on the back of the fearless play of their young stars. Noel will add some real grit and toughness to their team and will help them when they inevitably face the likes of Joel Embiid or DeAndre Jordan in the playoffs.

Noel will turn 26 in April, so he is still young enough to be a key part of this young team as it grows.

Adding Gallinari will give the Hawks not only another solid bench scorer, but a level-headed veteran presence in the locker room. That is an underrated commodity in the NBA, especially for a young group of players who will likely be experiencing playoff basketball for the first time.

This trade is almost a free swing for Atlanta. They only gave up a pick which is tied to Brooklyn and will likely be in the 25-30 range come draft night. So they still have their own first round pick in 2020 and also will have about $95 million in cap room to spend next summer, although that will probably fall to around $75 million after contract options are picked up.

For Oklahoma City, this deal was all about cashing in on two assets which were expiring at the end of the season. They get two more draft picks to throw on their already impressive pile of assets.

It was probably unlikely that they were going to re-sign either Noel or Gallinari beyond this season. Noel because Steven Adams has the starting center role locked down, and Gallinari because at 31-years-old he doesn't fit with their rebuild.

Perhaps they could have squeezed out a little bit more value in this deal, but it probably won't make a big difference in the long run with their vast pick arsenal.

At this stage both Turner and Len are expected to play out the season with the Thunder. Neither would be likely candidates to be bought out of their contracts so that they could join a playoff contender.

Atlanta receive
Nerlens Noel - 25 - C - $1.6m - 1 year (84)
Danilo Gallinari - 31 - SF - $22.6m - 1 year (81)

Projected line-up:
Nerlens Noel - John Collins - Jabari Parker - Cam Reddish - Trae Young
Reserves:
Danilo Gallinari, Kevin Huerter, De'Andre Hunter, Damian Jones, Trevon Duval, Allen Crabbe, Chandler Parsons, DeAndre Bembry, Bruno Fernando, Vince Carter, Brandon Goodwin*, Charlie Brown Jr*

Oklahoma City receive
Alex Len - 26 - C - $4.2m - 1 year (75)
Evan Turner - 31 - SF - $18.6m - 1 year (74)
2020 Brooklyn first round pick (Lottery protected)
2022 New Orleans second round pick

Projected line-up:
Steven Adams - Deyonta Davis - Carmelo Anthony - Shai Gilgeous-Alexander - Chris Paul
Reserves:
Dennis Schroder, Mike Muscala, Terrance Ferguson, Justin Patton, Andre Roberson, Hamidou Diallo, Deonte Burton, Alex Len, Evan Turner, Darius Bazley, Luguentz Dort*

------------------------------

Timberwolves hoping that Schroder can help solve their offensive struggles

The second deal that Presti completed involved him sending Dennis Schroder and a 2021 second round pick to the Minnesota Timberwolves in exchange for Jeff Teague and a protected 2021 first round pick.

Minnesota, who currently sit in seventh place with a 24-20 record, are right in the middle of a seven-team battle to decide the western conference playoff seeding. Only four games separate fourth-placed Phoenix and tenth-placed Portland.

Adding Schroder immediately upgrades their point guard rotation and hopefully gives them someone who can get their offense running much more smoothly. The German playmaker has been one of the top bench players in the league this season, but will be relishing a return to the starting role. He has been averaging 20 points and 11 assists (per 36 minutes) as backup to Chris Paul.

Even if this doesn't turn out to be the long-term solution to their point guard problem, it won't be a big deal. Worst case scenario it will only cost them an extra year of salary and maybe ten or fifteen spots in the 2021 draft, thanks to getting back a second round pick in the deal.

The best case scenario for Minnesota would be if they got the top seed next season and Oklahoma City finish as the worst team in the league, then the Timberwolves would only drop back one selection in the order, from 30 to 31.

Oklahoma City decided to trade Schroder whilst his value was at it's highest. His form has him as the favourite to win the Sixth Man of the Year award and he still has another year remaining on his contract beyond this season.

The long term goal for the team is to have Shai Gilgeous-Alexander take over the point guard role, so having both Schroder and Chris Paul on the team as well impeded those plans. And Schroder was easier to move out of the two.

Exchanging Schroder for the expiring contract of Jeff Teague also opens up an extra $15 million in cap space for the Thunder. It gives them as much as $35 million to spend next off-season, however that number will likely be reduced to roughly $23 million after contract options are exercised.

Although history suggests that they won't be big players in the free agency market, it wouldn't be surprising to see Sam Presti put a big contract offer to Brandon Ingram. If nothing else it will at least get the Pelicans to pay top dollar to keep him. But if they decline to match he would be a great fit on this rebuilding team at just 22-years-old.

The addition of yet another first round pick now gives the Thunder the potential of having an incredible 17 first round selections over the next 7 years. If the 2020 draft order was based on current standings, Oklahoma City would hold picks 7, 17 and 23 in the first round.

Normally teams wouldn't include a second round pick in a deal like this, but second round picks probably won't be much use to the Thunder over the next few years as they will need roster spots for all of their first round selections anyway.

Jeff Teague would likely draw interest from both Los Angeles teams if he were to get bought out, but there is no official word yet about that happening.

Looking ahead to the upcoming off-season

After completing these two trades the Thunder are now looking at having between $23 million and $35 million to spend on contract offers when free agency starts on July 1st.

The team options on Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Terrance Ferguson and Hamidou Diallo are likely to be picked up, but Deonte Burton has question marks over his future. Mike Muscala has a $2.3 million player option for next season and it will be interesting to see if he exercises it or looks for more financial security by opting-out.

The 2020 free agency market was already looking fairly underwhelming, at least compared to the all-star laden bonanza we just witnessed this season. The recent extensions signed by Pascal Siakam, Jaylen Brown, Buddy Hield, Domantas Sabonis and Dejounte Murray have weakened the free agent pool even further.

In terms of restricted free agents available, Brandon Ingram, Dario Saric, Bogdan Bogdanovic, Kris Dunn, Jakob Poeltl, Cedi Osman, Thon Maker, Juan Hernangomez and Malik Beasley are the pick of the bunch.

The biggest names in the unrestricted free agent pool at this stage would probably be Andre Drummond, Marc Gasol, Hassan Whiteside, Danilo Gallinari, Serge Ibaka, Paul Millsap, Jordan Clarkson, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, Fred VanVleet, Reggie Jackson, Tristan Thompson, Montrezl Harrell, Nerlens Noel, Willy Hernangomez, Jahlil Okafor, Jae Crowder, Isaiah Thomas, Joe Harris and Allonzo Trier.

It's not the most inspiring list of names, but given that there could be as many as six teams able to hand out at least one max-level contract, we could see the likes of Anthony Davis, Gordon Hayward, Otto Porter Jr, Jabari Parker and Nicolas Batum opt out of their 2020-21 player options and chase a long-term deal.

Realistically most of those players don't fit with the Thunder's new timeline, so they may end up not being big players in the free agency market. Maybe they will follow Atlanta's lead and use their cap space to take on bad contracts in exchange for future draft picks.

Perhaps they will preserve their cap room for another year and put themselves in the Giannis sweepstakes, however unlikely their chances would be at actually signing him.

That's definitely given you some flexibility and options come the offseason. Shame you couldn't move Paul, though I guess that wouldn't have been the most realistic situation given his contract.

I actually came up with a trade to send Paul to Miami, but they were too far out of playoff contention for it to make any sense. I'll try again to find a deal for him in the off-season.

Paul will actually be 35 at the end of the season. So maybe the game could do me a favour and have him retire

Yeah, Pat Riley is probably a bit shrewder than that. Besides, there's no way he could wear #3 in Miami!

I had no idea that CP3 had that many steals until the commentators mentioned that he had tied the NBA record. He tied Larry Kenon (1976) and Kendall Gill (1999) with 11 steals.

Derrick Rose missed a shot at the buzzer that would have forced overtime.

As I've said before, it's always cool when you hit or tie a record, or even just put up big numbers, more organically rather than trying for it. I like that it's acknowledged in 2K's commentary, too.
