Man this is still going strong! I always loved that look for the Wizards. I was never a fan of the new red, white & blue scheme. :)

That's just a good Photoshop, right? Michael Jordan never played for the Wizards!

(At least, I thought we all agreed that that never happened. ;))

Round 1, Game 7: Magic steal the series
By WashingtonWizards.com staff

@Orlando | L 84-88

A year after being swept by Miami in the Eastern conference semi-finals, Washington hoped for a better outcome in this year's playoffs. It didn't happen. After a strong start to the series, the underdog Wizards failed their final tests against the surging Magic.

Things looked grim from the start in Amway Arena. Antawn Jamison left the game in the 1st quarter with a minor back injury and didn't return until late in the 3rd. With Jamison out and Dwight anchoring the post defensively, the Wizards faced a familiar problem - scoring outside the paint. Arenas (23 points, 11 assists) and Butler (15 points, 9 rebounds) were bright spots, but Haywood and the frontcourt struggled to produce. The Wizards' bench relies heavily on offensive rebounds and attacking the basket and thus struggled when forced into jump-shots. Late-game heroics by Arenas and Butler nearly allowed Washington to to come back and steal the game, but Orlando maintained the gap at the charity stripe.

Orlando will press on, led by a resurgent Dwight Howard (20 points, 13 rebounds) and flashy Steve Francis (25 points, 5 assists).

Player of the Game: Steve Francis

It wasn't quite the ending we had in mind, but we pushed a good team to 7 games and performed at a high level. We're going to regroup in the off-season, find our weak points, and come back stronger next year. Props to Orlando for hanging in there after being down 3-1.

Well, season 1 ended a bit quicker than I would've liked, but I'm excited to move on to the best part of any dynasty - the off-season! Thanks to everyone who has stopped by to read and comment on my story. There will definitely be a 2nd season.

In terms of the story and presentation, I'm going to make a few changes to the layout that will help me write content faster. I'm also going to sim more games against bad teams to move things along faster. Burnout and having a toddler limit my time, so I'm turning the focus from quantity to quality.

As for the season itself, I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. Looking back, I'm realizing that I underutilized Arenas on offense. I need to run way more set plays, PnRs, and isos for him. I'm also going to try to adjust the sliders so that Jamison isn't automatic from the post because exploits like that bother me (I think I could legit score 90 with him). Also, I fell into a rut several times where my offense was either a 3 or layup. I'm playing in the bygone era of the mid-range game and should do more with it to mix things up. I also underutilized everyone not named Arenas or Jamison because I have trust issues letting them shoot. A balanced attack would be more fun and beneficial, though.

I'll be making a few roster changes in the off-season but will save that news for later. See you guys soon!

Some community involvement might be fun for my off-season. The 2 biggest weaknesses I want to address are 3PT shooting and bench scoring.

For the former, I'm eyeing a few affordable guards with good 3PT shooting (better than friggen Marko Jaric): Morris Peterson, Martell Webster, Juan Dixon, and Rashad McCants. I'd love to hear opinions and other suggestions (if you guys even remember these dudes). I'm not sure any of them are freestyle superstars, but I don't think that's a necessity with Arenas in the backcourt. Just need a couple guys who can knock them down at a respectable clip.

I've played a few dynasties over the years but never made it past the first season, so I'm having to learn how contracts and salary caps work (I don't pay much attention to that IRL either). It looks I won't be able to sign any free agents unless I drop nearly everyone which is unfortunate, so I guess I'll have to re-sign most players and make all my changes via trades. I've scouted several players for the draft, but this draft class is absolute weak sauce, so I don't expect to get much from it.

Shame the season ended that way, but it's definitely different. I know in my stories, I've often ended up being too dominant. I'd hate to try and make an interesting story out of Year in my NBA 2K19 MyCAREER!

Congrats on making it through the season, though! I'm trying to think of some of the players that were around at the time that would fit the bill. Mike Dunleavy Jr. might be a solid option for some three-point shooting, from memory he's a free agent after the first year.

One thing to remember is that the Re-Sign Players phase in Dynasty happens before the Sign Players phase (as opposed to real life, where they're all mixed together), so if you're trying to maximise cap space, you'll need to pick and choose who you re-sign carefully. Note that if they're still available come the Sign Players phase you can re-sign them there anyway, so you can take your chances by not making the commitment when you have first dibs on your own free agents if you're comfortable with letting them go, worst case scenario.

You can also try front-loading and back-loading contracts to entice players, or maximise cap space. It won't always work out because players won't necessarily be interested in a contract structured that way, but if they are willing to sign those deals, you can save cap room now to possibly squeeze in another signing, or in subsequent years when other players will be available and you need some extra cap room to go after them.

Good tips, thanks! It seems that the advantage to the re-signing period is that you can sign over your cap space, whereas signing them in the regular signing period will count against the cap. Does that sound right?

Sort of. You can go over the cap to re-sign your own players, under the Bird Rights clause. In the real NBA there are more conditions to that rule, but NBA Live 06's approach is very simplified with all your player qualifying for Bird Rights. They will still count against the cap for the length of their contracts though, so if you use up your cap space re-signing them, you won't be able to offer any other free agents more than the minimum (I can't remember if the Mid-Level Exception is accounted for in NBA Live 06).

So yeah, re-signed players still count against the cap, but you can go over the cap to re-sign them during that phase. If you want to have cap space to make offers to anyone else's free agents though, you'll need to make sure you leave some when you're re-signing your own players to new deals, or skip re-signing them and trying your luck on the open market (the second phase). As I said, you can still try to re-sign your own free agents at that point, if no other team has picked them up.

OK, thanks again. As an experiment, I tried not re-signing any players which left me with 8 players on the roster and only ~4-5mil in cap space. Realistically, that would only buy me 1 decent player, so I think I'm better off re-signing several players and using them as trade pieces.

Definitely. If you're not able to free up $10-20 million in cap space for any given offseason, it's hard to be a major player in free agency.

One Wizard is included in this list - Anthony Peeler. Peeler was a seldom-used reserve but a capable 3PT specialist when called upon.

I'm glad we get another season with Shaq because he often retires after season 1 in this game.

A few of those players hung around a little longer, but otherwise, many of them were retiring around that time (if not a year earlier).

Solid offseason so far. What are Becker's speed ratings like? Sometimes that was an issue with generated rookies in games from around that time, their speed (and with guards, dribbling) ratings were unrealistically low, making them less useful than they should be.

Here are Becker's ratings:
Image

So in summary, a superb shooter that's mediocre/bad at everything else. He has decent speed which should help him get to shooting spots on set plays, but his lateral quickness is too poor to reliably shoot off the dribble. I'll leave that to Arenas and Butler.

I plan on changing him to SG and developing him athletically/defensively because that level of 3PT shooting is rare.

Good idea. Definitely a great pick with that three-point rating, but yeah, severely underrated in other core skills for his position.

Ben Wallace always seems to move on in the second year (as he did in real life, funnily enough). In my Dynasty, he went to the Bobcats.

Johnson was a nice pickup for the baby Bobcats!Yeah I can't imagine the Wizards were gonna have much cap space that offseason. Butler had to be resigned. Careful building and development if always better for story purposes. I think that Wizards team didn't even get close to their potential IRL so it's worth sticking with the core a little longer to see if you can unlock it in season 2!
