Afflalo is a little more consistent than Waiters, but at this point, it is looking like he is rather expendable.

I think I was just amazed by how tough the shot was. It was certainly a cool thing to witness... even if I was on the wrong end of it.

Pretty much. It was one of the better game winners I've seen in 2K, so I wasn't too disappointed.

Porter Leads Sonics Past Clippers

Image

Otto Porter scorched the Clippers, scoring 37 points in the Sonics’ 112-107 win.

Andrew Nicholson was strong as well, with 16 points and 11 rebounds, while Dion Waiters scored 14 points. This game also marked the return of Boban Marjanovic from injury, who ended up with 14 points on his first game back. However, the return of Marjanovic was balanced out with an injury to Jarnell Stokes. Stokes went down after receiving contact to his ribs on a Brice Johnson layup. He will likely miss 2-4 weeks.

For the Clippers, Chris Paul and Brice Johnson both scored 27 points each, while J.J. Redick and Wesley Johnson scored 16 and 12 respectively.

Porter and Waiters Serve Spurs Defeat

Image

Otto Porter continued his fine form in the Sonics’ 112-105 win over the Spurs. Porter scored 29 points on the night. This time around, he had great help from Dion Waiters, who was on fire himself with 26 points and 6 assists. Andrew Nicholson (13 points) was solid in his supporting role, while Patty Mills (12 points, 6 assists) and Boban Marjanovic (10 points, 6 rebounds) also played significant roles in the victory.

For the Spurs, Kawhi Leonard and LaMarcus Aldridge led the way with 22 and 21 respectively. Pau Gasol was strong in the paint, with 19 points and 13 rebounds, while Tony Parker had 13 points and 9 assists.

Sonics Pick Up Win in Boston

Image

The Sonics kept their run going with a 95-84 win against the Celtics.

Dion Waiters capitalised on momentum from his previous outing, leading the Sonics’ scoring with 24 points. It was a slightly off night for Otto Porter, but he still managed 18 points and 6 rebounds, while the Sonics also received good production from Andrew Nicholson (13 points, 9 rebounds) and Tony Snell (11 points).

For the Celtics, Al Horford (16 points, 12 rebounds) and Isaiah Thomas (13 points, 13 assists) both registered double-doubles, but I.T. had major struggles from the field. The Celtics star point guard shot a woeful 5-19. Terry Rozier (13 points), Rudy Gay (12 points) and Markelle Fultz (12 points) did their best to pick up the slack, but ultimately couldn’t prevent the home loss.

Sonics Outlast Spurs, Extend Winning Run to 5

Image

The Sonics closed out the Spurs in the final quarter, leading them to a 96-86 win. With just a 1-point lead heading into the 4th, the Sonics outscored the Spurs 31-22, thanks to a well-rounded team performance.

Otto Porter led a field of 5 double-digit scorers for the Sonics, with 19 points and 5 rebounds. Wilson Chandler also proved that he can still contribute on the offensive end, with 17 off the bench, while Patty Mills chimed in with 15 points and 9 assists. Tony Snell and Andrew Nicholson had 13 and 12 respectively.

The Spurs got efficient production from their top scorers, but turnovers killed their momentum, with Tony Parker being the main culprit (6). Pau Gasol had 15 points and 12 rebounds, while LaMarcus Aldridge and Kawhi Leonard scored 13 points each. Tony Allen tallied 10 points and 4 assists.

Porter Goes Ottomatic in Denver, Extends Sonics Streak to 6

Image

Otto Porter went to another level once again in the Sonics’ 113-100 win against the Nuggets in Denver. Porter scored a career high 46 points off 17-26 from the field. But before Otto kicked into gear, Wilson Chandler provided a major spark for the Sonics off the bench, scoring 25 points on the night. Dion Waiters (12 points, 6 assists) and Andrew Nicholson (10 points, 11 rebounds, 6 steals) were also solid contributors to the win.

For the Nuggets, Danilo Gallinari led the way with 20 points and 5 rebounds. Emmanuel Mudiay (16 points, 9 assists) was influential on offence for the Nuggets as well, while Juan Hernangomez (8 rebounds) and Jamal Murray scored 12 points each. Will Barton and Nikola Jokic also hit double-digit points with 11 and 10 respectively.

Jazz Crash Otto’s Party, End Sonics Win Streak

Image

Despite Otto Porter eclipsing the career high he registered the previous game, the Jazz managed to pick up a 98-91 win in Seattle.

Otto Porter had a career-high 50 points, as well as 7 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals. But the Sonics offence didn’t have a great deal of success elsewhere, with Dion Waiters (15 points, 6 assists) the only other Sonics player in double figures.

Unlike the Sonics, the Jazz had plenty of options, with 5 double-digit scorers. Derrick Favors (25 points) and Alec Burks (18 points) led the way, while Dante Exum had a career high 14 assists, to go with his 12 points. Bojan Bogdanovic and Jeff Green scored 10 points each.

Halfway There!

With 41 games played in the season, here’s a glimpse into each award race.

Most Valuable Player
Image

Since Russell Westbrook, the reigning MVP, is out of the season (dislocated right patella), it shouldn’t be a surprise to see former winners Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant and LeBron James high up on the rankings.

Rookie
Image

Jayson Tatum is the clear standout of this rookie class, and it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise. While Dennis Smith and Harry Giles are also starters, Tatum is in the best situation to succeed since he is given more responsibility on offence. It will be interesting to see whether he can become the Heat’s first or second option by the time the regular season has concluded.

Sixth Man
Image

Brandon Knight has a good chance of repeating, but Cameron Payne has emerged as a bolter in the rankings. However, with Westbrook out for the season, Payne’s chances of lifting the trophy are likely to diminish.

Defensive Player
Image

DeAndre Jordan finds himself at the top, because he’s just so damn good at rebounding and blocking shots. But don’t sleep on Seattle’s Andrew Bogut. His role as the defensive anchor has helped the Sonics reach 2nd place in the Western Conference standings.

Most Improved Player
Image

This may be a little biased, but this really is a one-man race. No one else in the league has shot to prominence like Otto Porter. He has risen from the shadows of John Wall and Bradley Beal and has turned into one of the league’s most promising young players. And to think, some people were calling him a bust…

Snell Leads Sonics Past Heat

Image

Tony Snell had a career night in the Sonics’ 107-93 win over the Heat. Snell led all scorers with a career high 26 points off the bench. It was complemented well by great performances from Otto Porter (23 points, 8 rebounds) and Andrew Nicholson (18 points, 9 rebounds), while Patty Mills and Dion Waiters managed to add 11 points each.

The Heat had two standout performance in the paint by Chris Bosh (21 points, 11 rebounds) and Hassan Whiteside (18 points, 12 rebounds). But they were unable to find a consistent 3rd contributor, with Tyler Johnson (11), Jayson Tatum (10), and Thomas Robinson (10) all providing minor contributions on the offensive end.

Afflalo Amazes in Return Against Kings

Image

Arron Afflalo enjoyed an emphatic return from injury in the Sonics’ 88-78 win against the Kings. AAA poured in a season high 27 points in his first game back. Afflalo just managed to outscore Otto Porter, who ended up with 26 points and 7 rebounds on the night. But aside from Afflalo and Porter, the Sonics’ offence struggled, as Tony Snell (12) was the only other double-digit scorer.

However, offence proved to be an even bigger struggle for the Kings. DeMarcus Cousins was the only consistent performer on the night, with 19 points and 14 rebounds. Jodie Meeks (12) and Darren Collison (10 points, 8 assists) both hit double figures, but combined for an inefficient 10-27 from the field.

Rockets Soar Past Sonics

Image

The Rockets managed to stop the Sonics’ momentum with a 98-86 win in Seattle.

Surprisingly, it was Ryan Anderson who did the most damage on the night, tallying 20 points and 9 rebounds. James Harden had a relatively quiet night, with 14 points and 6 assists, while Clint Capela (12 points, 18 rebounds) destroyed the Sonics in the paint. D.J. Augustin also contributed with 10 points off the bench.

Nobody for the Sonics could find any rhythm on the night. Dion Waiters top scored with 19, but only hit 5-17 from the field. Otto Porter (5-14) struggled from his 13 points, while Arron Afflalo was brought down to Earth with 12 points off 4-12. Wilson Chandler and Tony Snell were both able to contribute 11 points each off the bench, but they couldn’t make up for the lacklustre performance from the starters.

Warriors Stun Sonics in Seattle

Image

Golden State dealt the Sonics their most comprehensive loss of the season, winning 121-97 in Seattle.

Everything ran smoothly for the Warriors through Stephen Curry. The former unanimous MVP tallied 33 points and 11 assists in a dominant display. Much like his splash brother, Klay Thompson was also lethal, with 26 points. Kevin Durant and Draymond Green both scored 15 points, while Joffrey Lauvergne (10 points, 9 rebounds) and J.J. Hickson (10 points, 8 rebounds) both had solid contributions in the paint.

After struggling in the previous game against Houston, Otto Porter came back with a 34-point effort. However, unlike the Warriors, the scoring wasn’t as widespread in the Sonics’ offence. In fact, aside from Otto Porter, the Sonics only had two other players in double figures. Dion Waiters backed up his effort against the Rockets with 18 points, while Tony Snell had another great performance off the bench, tallying 16 points on the night.

Sonics Get Back on Track, Complete Heat Sweep

Image

The Sonics managed to stop their losing streak with a 97-87 win over the Miami Heat.

Otto Porter (21 points) and Andrew Nicholson (20 points, 11 rebounds) were the two main contributors for the Sonics on offence, while Arron Afflalo and Andrew Bogut chipped in with 11 points each. Wilson Chandler also reached double figures, with 10 points off the bench.

For the Heat, Chris Bosh was in vintage form, as he tallied 28 points and 9 rebounds. But unfortunately for Bosh and the Heat, nobody really stepped up to be the sidekick. Ramon Sessions registered 14 points and 6 assists off the bench, while Justise Winslow (12 points) and the recently-acquired Nikola Mirotic (10 points, 5 rebounds) both had minor contributions.

Sonics Complete Celtic Sweep

Image

The Seattle Sonics had 6 players in double figures in their 109-87 demolition of the Boston Celtics.

Otto Porter once again led the way, scoring 19 points, while Dion Waiters (16) and Andrew Nicholson (13 points, 7 rebounds) were also productive. But one of the most significant factors of the game was the Sonics’ centre rotation. With Andrew Bogut out of the lineup, Boban Marjanovic and Jarnell Stokes stepped up in a big way. Marjanovic had 13 points and 18 rebounds, while Stokes tallied 12 points and 5 rebounds. Wilson Chandler was the sixth player in double digits, with 11 points.

For the Celtics, Isaiah Thomas admirably carried the offence with 27 points and 7 assists. But he had very little help, as Jordan Mickey (11 points, 11 rebounds) and Chris Andersen (10 points, 7 rebounds) were the only other Celtics in double figures.

Seattle Gets Revenge Against Minnesota

Image

The Sonics managed to pick up a 107-101 win over the Timberwolves, making up for the last-second loss in the previous encounter.

Dion Waiters (21) and Otto Porter (19) led the Sonics’ offensive efforts once again, but the story once again was the performance of Boban Marjanovic. After copping a poke in the eye, Marjanovic played through and tallied 17 points, 12 rebounds and 4 blocks. Despite getting through this game, it is likely that Marjanovic will miss the next game as a precaution. Along with Boban, Patty Mills was close to registering a double-double of his own, with 10 points and 9 assists.

Karl-Anthony Towns was again the Timberwolves top performance, with 22 points and 18 rebounds. Zach LaVine added 18 points and 5 assists, while Kris Dunn and Andrew Wiggins both had 13 points each. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope also reached double figures with 10 points.

Stokes Steps Up in Atlanta

Image

With Boban Marjanovic sitting out, Jarnell Stokes was a surprise star in the Sonics’ 103-66 blowout of the Hawks. As a starter, Stokes recorded career highs in points (24), rebounds (19), and blocks (4). Andrew Nicholson (13 points, 9 rebounds) was also solid in the paint, while Otto Porter took a backseat, scoring only 12 points. The Sonics also gave Michael Fusek an extended run. Along with Stokes, the rookie also had season high numbers, as he recorded 10 points and 12 rebounds off the bench.

Despite being outmatched, Dwight Howard was the standout for the Hawks, with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Howard was one of the few Atlanta players showing signs of life, as Ersan Ilyasova (10 points, 8 rebounds) was the only other Hawk to reach double figures in scoring.

Due to his incredible performance, 2K have announced that they will be releasing a Jarnell Stokes moments card for MyTEAM.

Suns No Match for Sonics

Image

After leaving a trail of destruction in Atlanta, the Sonics managed to continue their momentum with a 104-75 smashing of the Suns.

Otto Porter kicked into gear, scoring 31 points off 11-21 from the field. Jarnell Stokes carried his excellent form into this game as well, with 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Dion Waiters (11) and Andrew Nicholson (10 points, 15 rebounds) also provided useful contributions to the win.

Aside from Jason Smith (16 points, 5 rebounds), the Suns offence was erratic. Dragan Bender (13 points, 7 rebounds) and Eric Bledsoe (11 points, 6 assists) were inefficient, as they combined for 10-29 from the field. Devin Booker also didn’t help matters, scoring 10 points from 3-15. Brandon Knight scored his 10 points efficiently (5-9), but wasn’t assertive enough to keep the Suns in the game.

Patty Thrills Against Chicago in Win

Image

Patrick Mills had his best performance of the season in the 101-85 win against the Chicago Bulls. Patty tallied 26 points and 10 assists, while being a pest on defence with 5 steals. He helped make up for a subpar performance from Otto Porter, who scored 17 points off 6-18 shooting. Andrew Nicholson (5-7) was far more efficient for his 16 points, while Jarnell Stokes has continued to be the breakout player for the second half of the season. The Sonics’ new starting centre had 14 points and 13 rebounds on the night.

The Bulls once again leaned on Jimmy Butler for most of their offensive production. Butler ended up with 25 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists. Rajon Rondo managed 14 points and 4 assists off the bench, while Goran Dragic and Dwyane Wade scored 11 points each.

Porter Torches Melo, Extends Sonics Winning Streak to 7

Image

Otto Porter roared back into form in the 109-88 win against the New York Knicks. The leading contender for the Most Improved Player award poured in 40 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. Porter dominated the scoring, with Arron Afflalo (13), Tony Snell (11) and Dion Waiters (11) providing minor contributions on offence.
Even though he was outplayed by Otto Porter, Carmelo Anthony still managed to lead the Knicks with 20 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists. Derrick Rose also had his moments, with 18 points and 7 assists, while rookie Terrance Ferguson added 12 points to the total.

Sonics Stunned in Brooklyn

Image

The Nets pulled off one of the upsets of the season with their 101-90 win against the Sonics. They did this on the back of outstanding performances from Caris LeVert (22 points) and Brook Lopez (19 points, 12 rebounds). Kris Humphries also turned back the clock, contributing 18 points and 7 rebounds, while Kosta Koufos (12 points) was useful off the bench. But possibly the biggest factor for the Nets was Rondae Hollis-Jefferson. RHJ not only shut down Otto Porter, but he had a line of 11 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 5 steals.

With Porter well contained, scoring only 13 points, the Sonics got most of their offensive production from Andrew Nicholson. He had 24 points and grabbed 9 rebounds on the night. Jarnell Stokes did his best with his matchup against Brook Lopez, with 18 points, 13 rebounds and 3 blocks, but was simply outmatched due to height. Dion Waiters managed 15 points as well, but the Sonics were severely hindered by the defence of Rondae Hollis-Jefferson and the work of Brook Lopez in the paint.

Sonics Bounce Back in Toronto

Image

The Sonics got back on winning terms with their 109-87 blowout of the Toronto Raptors.

After being shut down against the Nets, Otto Porter bounced back to lead the Sonics with 29 points. Wilson Chandler (14 points, 5 rebounds) provided a spark off the bench, while Bryce Cotton also enjoyed some extended garbage time with 13 points. Jarnell Stokes (13 rebounds) and Dion Waiters also scored 13 points each.

For the Raptors, DeMar DeRozan scored 21 points, but was erratic with 9-26 from the field. Jonas Valanciunas (10 rebounds) and Kyle Lowry (6 assists) scored 14 points each, while Terrence Ross and Patrick Patterson (7 rebounds) added 10 points each.

Pacers Outlast Sonics

Image

The Pacers outscored the Sonics 30-20 in the final quarter, leading them to pick up a 112-99 win in Seattle. While Paul George scored 25 points, it was the overall team effort from the Pacers that made the difference. As well as PG13, Monta Ellis (16 points), Jeff Teague (15 points, 10 assists), Thaddeus Young (15 points, 7 rebounds), Darrell Arthur (12 points) and Al Jefferson (11 points, 10 rebounds) all scored in double figures.

For the Sonics, the bulk of their scoring came from Otto Porter, who put up 29 points and 6 rebounds on the night. Patty Mills added 19, while Dion Waiters (14 points) and Shaun Livingston (12 points, 6 assists) also had an impact on the game, but were defeated by the Pacers’ power in numbers.

Sonics and Clippers Complete Trade

Image

The Seattle Sonics sent Wilson Chandler, Nick Young and Bryce Cotton to the Los Angeles Clippers for Jamal Crawford and Luc Mbah a Moute.

Since the Sonics re-entered the league, Jamal Crawford has previously expressed his desire to return to his home city. The Sonics even made an offer of two second round picks on draft day, which the Clippers declined.

While Chandler was a regular part of the Sonics’ rotation, the front office was weary of his Player Option for next season, where he could earn $12.8M.

Trade Breakdown

Sonics

Jamal Crawford is probably seen as the biggest part of this deal, but Luc Mbah a Moute is the most likely player to have an impact straight away. Mbah a Moute will slot directly into the rotation spot vacated by Chandler, while Crawford will have to compete with Arron Afflalo and Tony Snell for minutes off the bench. Since Crawford is in the twilight of his career, it is more likely that he will be given more of a mentor type role, rather than a regular part of the Sonics’ rotation. And as opposed to Wilson Chandler, Jamal Crawford has a Team Option for next season, so the Sonics now have more flexibility in free agency.

Clippers

After trying out numerous options at small forward over the past few seasons, the Clippers may have an answer with their acquisition of Wilson Chandler. He’s a low maintenance player, who can complement the Clippers with his versatility on both ends of the floor. As for Nick Young and Bryce Cotton, they have the potential to provide the Clippers more scoring from the bench, and are also expiring contracts.

Around the League: Every Regular Season Trade

Sonics receive: Jamal Crawford, Luc Mbah a Moute
Clippers receive: Wilson Chandler, Nick Young, Bryce Cotton

Marquese Chriss, a fixture of the dunk contest!

That's a solid trade there. Makes for a nice story in bringing Crawford home, too.

Luc Mbah a Moute is underrated (in 2K at least), long arms decent athlete, can make an impact for sure.

Mirotic and Delly for Goran Dragic? Did GarPax get fired? They actually won a trade :o

I've been looking to acquire him for a while, but I could never justify taking on his contract. At least with trading Chandler, I was getting a team option for a player option. Plus Chandler wasn't as effective as I wanted him to be as a 6-man, so it's not a huge loss in that sense either.

I think Luc will be effective in what I want him to do. He's a versatile defender and can hit an open shot at times (although, he will generally be the 5th option on the floor). He's essentially going to do what Wilson Chandler did for me, only with lesser expectations on him.

And I'm guessing that's what happened. It's funny because I believe that's the second time Delly got traded this season. So the Bulls got him and were like "nah". Maybe I'll screw over the Bulls next season, just to keep the GarPax dream alive ;)

The Process Trusted in Elites Overtime Win

Image

Joel Embiid came up big for the Elites in their 113-105 OT win against the Stars. The Process recorded 30 points and 19 rebounds to be named the Rising Star Challenge MVP. Brandon Ingram was also solid for the Elites, with 16 points and 4 rebounds, while Jamal Murray (14 points, 3 assists) and Ivan Rabb (12 points, 5 rebounds) also contributed to the win.

For the Stars, Caris LeVert and Ben Simmons were both strongly considered for the Rising Star MVP trophy. LeVert ended up with 27 points, while Simmons tallied 26 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists. Dario Saric (14 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists) and Dennis Smith (11 points, 6 assists) were also solid, but the Stars were unable to match Joel Embiid.

Irving Wins Three-Point Shootout

Image

Kyrie Irving’s final round score of 24 was enough for him to win the 2017 Three-Point Contest over Klay Thompson (20).

To get into the final round, Irving had to win a tiebreaker against Steph Curry, which he managed quite easily in the end, with Curry scoring 13 compared to Irving’s 22.

Despite Irving’s win, it was J.J. Redick that had the historic night. In the first round, the Clippers’ guard registered a perfect score of 34. However, he was unable to live up to the hype in the final round, as he tallied only 16.

Rookie Ferguson Claims Dunk Contest

The Knicks’ Terrance Ferguson won the dunk contest, narrowly edging out the Suns’ Ray Smith.

It was the dunk contest. There were dunks and they were underwhelming.

Hats off to Ferguson, but he's no Kenny "Sky" Walker.

In this dunk contest, Kenny "Sky" Walker would either get 50s or 25s... that's just how consistent 2K's dunk contest logic is. #preordercancelled

East Hold on for Rare Win

Image

The Eastern Conference picked up their first win since 2014, defeating the West 124-121.

Following on from Joel Embiid’s dominance in the Rising Star Challenge, Andre Drummond also proved that the NBA’s future at the centre position is in good hands. The Pistons pivot put up even more astronomical numbers, as he tallied 32 points and 26 rebounds on his way to win the 2018 All-Star Game MVP. It made LeBron’s 27 points and 3 assists look meagre in comparison. Along with Drummond, Carmelo Anthony (16 points, 11 rebounds) also put up a double-double, while Kyrie Irving (12 points, 9 assists) was just one assist shy of achieving his own.

For the West, Kevin Durant flirted with a triple-double, with 20 points, 8 rebounds and 7 assists. His Warriors teammate Stephen Curry was also influential, with 19 points and 10 assists, while Anthony Davis tallied 18 points and 11 rebounds. James Harden managed 14 points, while Kawhi Leonard quietly had a great game, with 13 points, 12 rebounds and 7 assists.

Harris Signs with Sonics

The Sonics have added depth to the point guard position by acquiring Devin Harris. The deal will see him through the 17-18 campaign.

Harris last played for the Dallas Mavericks in the 16-17 season.
