Dare's Wizards Association | 2013 Prospects: Power Forwards

Somehow the Washington Wizards stay on track on the hunt for a playoff spot. This month showed some big wins against the Brooklyn Nets and Boston Celtics.

The injuries of Bradley Beal and Nene displayed that the acquisitions of both Jason Terry and Carlos Delfino was a great move. They provided instant offense off the bench. But the true reason for this month’s success is the emergence of Trevor Ariza and John Wall. Ariza averaged 14 points, 6 rebounds and 3 steals while the All-Star John Wall averaged 22 points, 9 assists and 2 steals this month.

The Washington Wizards currently sits 9th on the Eastern Conference but the playoffs is still two months away. All the team needs to do is to continue this pace and hope for some good luck.

2013 NBA Prospect Reports

Centers
This is the weakest position in this year’s draft class. If you are looking for a big man there’s not much you can get. These three are the only worth scouting and they will likely be taken in the second round.

Jerry Mason – Arizona, Senior | 6’11” | 241 lbs | 22 y/o

Strengths: • Size • Strength • Physicality • Active Rebounder • Solid post defender • Shot-blocking ability • Good Potential

Weaknesses: • Touch around the rim • Mid-range game • Free throw shooter • Turns the ball over too often for a big • Decision-making in the post • Prone to foul trouble

Summary: Mason will be drafted solely due to his size alone. He has shown the ability to be a solid defender but has a long way to go before he is a factor at the next level on the offensive end but NBA teams are always in need of some size inside, he will get drafted possibly as high as late in the first round. More than likely, he'll fall into the second round.

Railey Garrett – Connecticut, Senior | 7’6” | 232 lbs | 23 y/o

Strengths: • Size • Long wingspan • Physicality • Good post defender • Shot-blocking ability • Can spot up beyond the arc

Weaknesses: • Not a terrific athlete • Offensive post up game needs to be fine tuned • Unproven against major competition (particularly fellow bigs) • Aggressiveness on the glass • Prone to foul trouble

Summary: Garrett is nice looking center, his height should be a big advantage but he doesn’t know how to use it properly. On defense he doesn’t hustle for rebounds although he grabs fairly amount of them and block shot just by standing. Doesn’t have any post moves to use on offense but he shoots well outside the arc. His unorthodox style for a big man might be put on good use or vice versa.

Boris Hanson – North Carolina, Junior | 6’10” | 242 lbs | 22 y/o

Strengths: • A good frame that continues to fill out as he gets older • Athleticism • Good post defender • Shot-blocking ability • Has showed steady improvement in his three years at North Carolina • Doesn't try to do too much; knows his limitations

Weaknesses: •Sometimes over-aggressive as a shot blocker leaving the weak side open • Must work on his mid-range/face-up game • Footwork needs to improve on both ends especially defensively when guarding outside the paint • Must become stronger and more physical to truly reach his potential

Summary: Hanson is another decent but not a great center. He will rebound, defend and occasionally score for you but not on a consistent basis. He moves very slow compare to other the bigs and he needs to work on his stamina. The great thing about “Bo” is he has a good feel about the game, knows what to do at the right place at the right time.

Power Forwards
This year’s draft class has produced good athletes on this position. The following prospects are a surefire first rounder and lottery players at best.

Brendan Gill – UCLA | 6’9” | 242 lbs | 19 y/o

Strengths: • Strength • Active Rebounder • Great Passer • Great Post Offense • Mid Range Jumpshot • Good Basketball I.Q.

Weaknesses: • Post Defense • Average Athleticism • Doesn't run the floor well • Stamina

Summary:The young man from Oklahoma, Brendan Gill is projected to be amongst the top prospects in the draft. Has great post offense and very unselfish player. He has the knack of finding his teammates even when doubled. Has a nice mid-range jumpshot. His defense needs a little work though, his not the best athletic player but makes it up for his great basketball I.Q. He will be an allstar in the NBA in the near future.

Kyle Fuller – Duke | 6’9” | 230 lbs | 20 y/o

Strengths: • Athleticism • Quickness • All-Around player • Loads of Potential

Weaknesses: • Motor • Aggressiveness • Needs to work on Fundamentals • Consistency

Summary: Kyle Fuller is a very intriguing prospect, he have all the tools in making of a star but lacks the motor. Often disappear in games and sometimes dominating. An all-around player with unorthodox style. He likes to work in the high post and can easily drives by his defender. Sometimes he relies too much on his athleticism and need to work on his fundamentals.

James Barnes - Connecticut | 6’10” | 250 lbs | 20 y/o

Strengths: • Wingspan and Length • Athleticism • Shot-blocking ability • Improving Jumpshot

Weaknesses: •Post Offense • Looks lost on Offense • Questionable Basketball I.Q • Must become stronger and more physical to truly reach his potential

Summary: James Barnes has a long wingspan, a great shot blocker but looks lost on the offense. He tends to force too much when in offense. Occasionally hits a mid-range shot but still not consistent, doesn’t look to play inside and not comfortable playing the center position. Played with Railey Garrett in the front court, made up the "Twin Towers" of UConn.

Worst Case Scenario: Brandan Wright

Shawn Weaver – Baylor | 6’10” | 260 lbs | 22 y/o

Strengths: • Physicality • Athleticism • Good Body Frame • Improving Post Offense • Rebounding

Weaknesses: • Defense needs a lot of work • Consistency • Can't guard quicker big man • Foul Trouble • Ball Handling

Summary: Shawn Weaver is an athletic big man and likes to work inside the paint. He scored mostly on putbacks and dunks but he has a decent mid-range shot. He needs to work on his post defense especially when playing quicker big man.
