Around the League: Major Trades
Billups in Pacers uniform
Two major trades have happened on the trade deadline day, involving four teams and 4 all-star caliber players. At first Jazz traded Al Jefferson to Detroit for Rip Hamilton, but after that Indiana gave up their biggest star Danny Granger for an experienced point guard in Chauncey Billups.
Detroit Pistons sent away one of their experienced and loyal players of the team, but there are more gains than loses for them in this trade. First, they get an All-Star caliber center, who averages a double-double nearly every game. This is good for them, because till this their starting center was Ben Wallace, who is still pretty good, but not getting younger either. And their loss at the shooting guard position isn’t big either, because they have Tracy McGrady there, who will start the games for Pistons now. “It’s sad to loose such a great player and teammate as Rip,” Tayshaun Prince told the reporters this evening “But we get a great starting center instead, which should make our team better.” Pistons team really looks scarier now and some experts think they can make a good run in the post season, with the pieces they have now.
Projected Line-up
Starters: C A.Jefferson (82) PF C.Villanueva (76) SF T.Prince (83) SG T.McGrady (84) PG R.Stuckey (78)
Bench: C B.Wallace (80) PF C.Wilcox (76) SG B.Gordon (73)
Grade for Pistons: A
As for Utah Jazz, maybe they lost their starting center, but they got a perfect player for their system from this trade in Rip Hamilton. He is unselfish, can play a good D, he will definitely fit into Jerry Sloan’s systems. Plus, they still have Mehmet Okur, who will start the games at center for them. “I am really happy, that Rip joins our team” Jerry Sloan stated “I’ve watched him playing for a long time and I know, that he will be perfect for our team.” No doubt that Hamilton fits in perfectly for Utah on paper, but we will have to wait and see how he looks on the court.
Projected Line-up
Starters: C M.Okur (77) PF P.Millsap (78) SF A.Kirilenko (86) SG R.Hamilton (81) PG D. Williams (86)
Bench: SG R.Bell (74) PF M.Speights (73) SF G. Hayward (72)
Grade for Jazz: B+
The other trade happened between Denver Nugets and Indiana Pacers, sending Chauncey Billups to Indiana and Danny Granger to Denver.
The biggest gain for Denver in this trade is insurance. Insurance, that they will still have a young star player if Carmelo Anthony decides to leave the team next summer. This could also be a sign, which shows that they don’t believe, that Melo will sign an extension, because Granger is a small forward too. One of the biggest winners of this trade is Ty Lawson, who will have the opportunity to start games now for Denver. Granger, meanwhile, is expected to start games on the bench, and it’s a big question how he will deal with this new role.
Projected Line-up
Starters: C Nene (78) PF K. Martin (83) SF C. Anthony (87) SG J. Smith (77) PG T. Lawson (77)
Bench: SF D. Granger (85) PF A. Harrington (78) C C. Andersen (78)
Grade for Nuggets: C
Indiana Pacers dealt their biggest star in this trade, which seems completely illogical, because this has been a pretty good season for Pacers so far. They had a great young core with Hibbert, Granger and Collison on the starting line-up, now only Hibbert is expected to start games… On the other hand, it’s always good to have an experienced and good point guard on your team, and it will have some upside in this case too. Billups will score less, than Granger and this means, that other guys, like Hibbert and Hansbrough, will be involved in the offense more. Plus Billups will be a great mentor for Collison, who Indiana expects to be their starting PG after next season, when Chauncey’s contract comes to an end.
Projected Line-up
Starters: C R. Hibbert (73) PF T. Hansbrough (75) SF J. Posey (74) SG M. Dunleavy (72) PG C. Billups (82)
Bench: SG D. Jones (74) PF J. McRoberts (73) PG D. Collison (72)
Grade for Pacers: C-

Wizards beat Heat in WashingtonWizards 87-81 Heat
D-Wade with a slam!
Tonight in Verizon centre, the Wizards met one of the East's powerhouses Miami Heat for the first time this season and managed to grab a win, 87-81, mainly thanks to a great third quarter. The Wizards played a great defense on the big three – only Dwyane Wade could score more than 15 points, James had 13 and Bosh had only 8.
“Guys did a great job on defense” stated Flip Saunders after the game “Especially against Bosh, who got only 7 shots because of our defense. We were lucky that James couldn’t score either.” That’s true – James made only 6 shots of 15 attempts.
Wizards used their best strength over Heat they had, and it was the bench. Thornton and Yi had great games coming off the bench, scoring 13 points each, Yi added 11 rebounds and a great defense on Bosh too, while Thornton was guarding James. Great as always on offensive end was Gilbert Arenas, who had 29 points, but struggled on defense against Wade, who had 30 and a phenomenal facial dunk on Gil.
The Wizards new addition Erick Dampier had a pretty decent game; he came off the bench and was team’s second best rebounder with 6 boards.”Erick helped us a lot, especially defensively” said Wizards GM Janis Kalnins, “I hope this will shut the critics up, who said, that the deal we made was absolutely not needed” After this game, the Wizards are back on .500, with a record 28-28.

Wizards suffers a loss in Charlotte
Wizards 89-101 Bobcats
Despite a 13 point lead after the first half, Wizards lost to Bobcats at Charlotte by a margin of 12 points. This was the first game for Kirk Hinrich and Erick Dampier against their former teams. Hinrich did well in this game having 15 points and helping his team win. “Kirk is a really good player, it’s pity, that he had to leave us,” said John Wall, who Hinrich backed up in his days with Wizards. Erick Dampier on the other hand had a decent game too - 4 points and 4 rebounds.
There were two different Bobcats teams tonight – the first was bad at defense and offense, but the second, who was led by Jackson and Wallace, was great on offense, but even greater on defense, letting the Wizards team score only 34 points at the second half. Gerald Wallace had 28 points and 12 rebounds in this game, Gilbert Arenas was the best player on Wizards roster having 34 points, 8 assists, 7 rebounds.

Wizards losses to Bucks at home
Wizards 90-93 Bucks
A dramatic basketball match was held tonight at Verizon centre, which resulted into a Milwaukee Bucks win over Washington Wizards by just 3 points, 93-90. The hero of the game for the Bucks was Brandon Jennings, who had 25 points and 4 assists. On the other side Al Thornton had 28, coming off the bench. “It’s hard to loose games that are as close as these,” he said after the game, “But we have to forget about it and get ready for next games.”
It was a 1 point lead for Wizards entering the last quarter, but Bucks managed to grab the win at the end with a couple of clutch free throws from Brandon Jennings. Gilbert Arenas missed a three pointer at the buzzer. This was an especially important match for both teams, because they are battling for the fifth spot in the East and a better opponent in play-offs. “We still have a lot of work to do” said Flip Saunders in the press conference after the game “It’s still a month to go and it’s not guaranteed that we will play there (in the play-offs).”

Who Will Play in the Play-offs?
This year it will be a hard battle for the 7th and 8th spot in the East. The season has gone to its last week and most of the teams are aware whether they will play or will not in the play-offs. However, there are four teams which destiny will be determined in these last games – Chicago, Washington, New York and Philadelphia. Right now the Bulls and the Wizards are over the edge and would participate in post season if regular season ended today.
7) Chicago 38-42
8) Washington 38-43
------------------------------
9) New York 37-44
10) Philadelphia 37-44
Remaining Schedule:
Wizards @ New York
76ers @ Indiana
Bulls vs. Orlando
Bulls vs. LA Clippers
The key match of course is the game in New York, where one of the play-off spots will be played out between Wizards and Knicks. Who will win this game definitely will play in the play-offs. If Knicks loose, their season is over, if Wizards loose, they have to hope, that Bulls will loose both of their games and that Philly won’t win it’s game against Pacers. “The regular season has come to an end and we hope, that we will see some results after it,” said the New York Knicks coach Mike D’Antoni, “I hope we will get the chance to play in the post season”
As for Chicago, they have to win one of their two remaining games to get a play-off spot or hope that Knicks and 76ers loose their games. Tom Thibodeau was confident about his players: “We will get the (play-off) spot, we have worked hard all season and finally it’s starting to pay off” Philadelphia has a little chance at playing in the play-offs, they have to hope that New York will loose their game against Wizards and that Bulls will loose both of their games.

Wizards looses the game and the play-off spot in MSGKnicks 98-85 Wizards
Stoudemire's awesome play was the biggest reason why Wizards lost.
An epic battle for the play-off seed in Eastern Conference was held tonight at a building with a long and great history – the Madison Square Garden. The Game between New York Knicks and Washington Wizards ended well for the home team, which, thank to a great fourth quarter, one the game by 13 point margin, 98-85. “This is hard to swallow,” after the game said the number one candidate for the Rookie of the Year award John Wall, “We were so close to the play-off spot, but we didn’t make it, well hopefully we will be there next year” John Wall didn’t have a great game tonight, he scored 14 points, but dished only 1 assist.
The game was really close in the first three quarters, with Arenas and Stoudemire destroying the defences of both teams. The score after the third was 62-59 in favor for the guests from Washington, but the Knicks came back. They started the fourth with an 8-0 run, with a three from Gallinari and 5 points from Stoudemire, getting a five point lead. Gilbert Arenas started to struggle on offense, and with him struggling the whole team couldn’t find the way on offense. On the other side, Stoudemire was still cutting through the Wizards defense as knife cuts through butter. He had a great help from Felton, who dished him some nice passes and Chandler, who got some great baskets himself too. Knicks got to a 15 point lead with 2 and a half minutes left and it was pretty much decided.
“I’m extremely happy, that we did this (got into play-offs),” stated Mike D’Antoni after the game, “But we can’t relax now, we still have at least four important games this season.” Wilson Chandler was so happy after the game, that he made a statement for Heat: “The Heat? We will beat them in 5 or 6 games, and I’m giving them the one or two wins only because they have James.” Some pretty strong words from him.
It was completely different mood on the Wizards camp. “It’s frustrating,” said Gilbert Arenas, asked how it feels to loose a game like this, “We worked really hard and we deserved to play there.” Gilbert ended the season with 24 points and 8 assists, but it wasn’t enough. “We still have a young team and I think this is a good result for us this season,” Flip Saunders stayed optimistic, “Next season we should be in the play-offs.” Saunders may be right, because with the core of Wall, Arenas, Blatche and possible free agent signings this summer, Wizards could be a real threat next year. It’s sure though, that the Wizards fans will have another great season of basketball next year.

Play-offs: Western Conference Preview
(1) Dallas Mavericks vs. Phoenix Suns (8)
Season Series: Dallas lead 3-1
Key Match-up: Marion vs. Turkoglu
Dirk Nowitzki and co is eager to win his first championship and the first step, they have to take, is beating Phoenix Suns and Steve Nash. Both All-stars have had a great regular season, but the real games for them will start right now. “It will be a close match-up,” says Dirk Nowitzki, who averaged 29,7 points and 11,4 rebounds per game this season “They maybe lost Stodemire, but they still have Nash and other great scorers, like Richardson and Turkoglu.” The key match-up in this series could be Marion vs Turkoglu, because Phoenix need Turkoglu, who averaged 19 points this season, to step up on offense, if they want to beat Dallas. But Marion has proven himself as a great defensive player this season with 2,2 blocks and nearly 2 steals per game. Another bad news for Phoenix is that Mavericks have a great bench with the likes of Jason Terry, Ersan Ilyasova and others.
Prediction: Mavericks in 5
(2) Los Angeles Lakers vs. Utah Jazz (7)
Season Series: LA Lakers lead 4-0
Key match-up: Bryant vs. Hamilton
The season only starts for Los Angeles Lakers, who will try to three-peat this year, while Utah is happy to even get into play-offs. Kobe Bryant has been outstanding so far this year averaging 29,8 points, 8,7 assists, 4,6 rebounds, 2,28 steals and 2,5 blocks per game. So it’s key for Utah to stop him and there are good news for them – they have a perfect man for the job, Rip Hamilton. Although, even if this happens Utah’s chances at getting past Lakers are quite small, because of their frontcourt, which has gone soft after they traded Al Jefferson away. “This is our first step to the finals and we have to be serious about it,” said Ron Artest, asked about their opponents in this series, “However, I think we will beat them in four games.” It’s hard to disagree…
Predicion: Lakers in 4
(3) Los Angeles Clippers vs. San Antonio Spurs (6)
Season Series: Series tied 2-2
Key match-up: Griffin vs. Blair
This is probably the last chance for Duncan, Ginobili and Parker to win a championship together, so they will be highly motivated this post season. Their first opponent will be the Clippers, who are playing surprisingly well this year. “I think we can beat them” stated Tim Duncan “Yes, we had a pretty bad regular season, but the real games starts now, isn’t it?” Tim himself however had a really great season averaging 27,9 points and 13,5 rebounds, being the fourth best scorer and the best rebounder in the league. But the key in this match-up will be how fast do both teams young forwards Griffin and Blair returns from the injuries and how well they play after. They both are expected to return for the third or fourth game of this series.
Prediction: Spurs in 7
(4) Oklahoma City Thunder vs. New Orleans Hornets (5)
Season Series: Oklahoma City lead 4-0
Key match-up: Ariza vs. Durant
Paul and company are ready to match-up with Kevin Durant and his team. Thunder and Hornets are placed 4th and 5th in western conference and this should mean a close series, but it may easily not be like that. Oklahoma City has won all 4 games against Hornets this season, which gives them the edge of winning this series. Plus they have Kevin Durant on their squad, who was the leagues third best scorer this year with 29,2 points per game. “We will win this series easily,” Kevin Durant made a strong statement before this series first game. The key for Hornets this series will be Ariza’s play on defensive end against Durant. If he manages to limit Durant to 20 points per game, Hornets could win this, if not… Well, then maybe Durant was right.
Prediction: Thunder in 5

Play-offs: Eastern Conference Preview
(1) Miami Heat vs. New York Knicks (8)
Season Series: Series tied 2-2
Key Match-up: Stoudemire vs. Ilgauskas
Talents of the South Beach will meet guys from the Big Apple in the first round. It will be a clash of superstars, because game spectators could see even 4 superstars on the court at the same time. James, Wade, Bosh and co had the best regular season in the league, but the real games starts here. “We understand that it will be much harder to win in play-offs, than it was in the regular season,” said LeBron James. The key for the Heat in this series is to limit New York’s biggest star Amare Stoudemire, and here’s a job for the Big Z. If he manages to do that, Knicks have no chance at beating Miami, if not, than we’ll see…
Prediction: Heat in 6
(2) Boston Celtics vs. Chicago Bulls (7)
Season Series: Boston lead 4-0
Key Match-up: Rondo vs. Rose
A rematch of one of the greatest first round series NBA has witnessed - the 2009 series between Bulls and Celtics. This team the Celts has their leader Garnett on the court, but Bulls are much better too with Boozer on their frontcourt. Although, Celtics have another advantage – they’ve won all 4 games against Chicago this year. “We will beat them,” Paul Pierce was confident, “Our goal is the Finals, nothing less.” The key in these series will be the play of two young era point guards Rose and Rondo. They showed a great performance in 2009 series between Bulls and Celtics, now we’re waiting for an even bigger show from them.
Prediciton: Celtics in 5
(3) Orlando Magic vs. Milwaukee Bucks (6)
Season Series: Milwaukee lead 3-1
Key Match-up: Howard vs. Bogut
Howard has had a pretty disappointing season; he was out of top 10 in League in both rebounding and blocking. However he has done a good job in offensive end, having a career high in scoring – he averaged 21,1 points this season. “Dwight was great on offense for us,” says Vince Carter, “And I believe he will get his defense to the level he can play, when we will meet the Bucks.” Vince had a pretty good season for himself, he averaged 19,4 points and 10,5 assists (a career high) and played all 82 games. His 10,5 assists beats his previous career high by 5,4. Bucks have a good chance to win these series two. Reason number 1 – they’ve beat Orlando three times already this year, and reason no. 2, Bogut has been great on Howard in all these games. If he does it again in the play-offs, Bucks have a serious argument for passing to the second round.
Prediction: Magic in 7
(4) Detroit Pistons vs. Indiana Pacers (5)
Season Series: Series tied 1-1
Key Match-up: Stuckey vs. Billups
Chauncey Billups against his old team Detroit, with whom he won a NBA title back in 2004. Pacers are the big surprise of the 10-11 season, having a great start of the season, then trading away their biggest star Danny Granger and still grabbing a fifth spot in the East. Billups had a great regular season, he averaged 23,6 points and 8,4 assists per game. Roy Hibbert has been a difference maker for Pacers too, and he is a Defensive Player of the Year candidate. “Of course they are strong, but let’s not forget, that we are the 4th seed here,” Tracy McGrady, who had a great come back season with 22,8 points per game, stated. Although, the great play of Hibbert and the experience from Billups gives a slight edge for Indy.
Prediction: Pacers in 7

Terry gets his second Sixth Man of the Year award
Jason Terry has won the Sixth man award this year, because of his great performances from the Dallas Mavericks bench. Terry averaged 8,5 points and 4,6 assists this year and was one of the main reasons why Dallas got the second best record in the NBA. “I’m honoured to get this prize for the second time, but all my focus is on play-off games right now,” said Jason Terry after receiving his trophy.
Wall wins the Rookie of the Year award as expected
Rookie John Wall has one his first award in his career – the Rookie of the Year award. Many believes, that this is not his last achievement. Wall averaged 17.1 points, 3.3 rebounds, 4.1 assists, 1.77 steals and 1.23 blocks per game. His averages in points, assists and steals were the best among the rookies. Washington Wizards GM Janis Kalnins had something to say about his rookie: “John is a great kid and I’m extremely happy he got this award. This is good for the whole organization too. I’m proud if him.”
Most Improved Player of the Year trophy goes to Oklahoma City
This is the biggest surprise so far in this post season. The clear candidate for winning this was Roy Hibbert from Indiana Pacers, who had a real break out season, but Kevin Durant took it from him. He didn’t see much improvement in his game this year, his numbers in points and rebounds even dropped a little (from 30,1 to 29,2 in points and from 7,6 to 4,7 in rebounds). However he had some improvements too, his assist averages went up from 2,8 last season to career high 7,8 this season. His steals and blocks per game increased too.
LeBron James writes his name in the history of the NBA
LeBron James is only the fifth player in the history of the NBA, who has won both MVP and DPOY awards and only the third, who has won them in on year, after Michael Jordan and Hakeem Olajuwon. James averaged 27,1 points (6th in the League), 6,1 rebounds, 9,8 assists (third), 2,9 blocks (second) and 2,4 steals (second) per game. “This has been a great year for me and for my team,” James said, “So I wasn’t too surprised to get these awards. But it’s still all about winning the ring for me.”
