Denver's 5 game Report Card
5 Game Recap
Overall Record: 7-3
Teams played: Bucks(W), Wizards(W), Mavericks(L), Cavaliers (W), Warriors (W)
Overall Grade: A-
For the most part, Denver finished most of their games with a dominating fashion. They've won 3 games with a margin larger than 10 points (Bucks, Cavaliers and Warriors), but their single loss that came at the hands at the Dallas Mavericks was a huge let down (a 100-86 defeat). Denver had also made their first trade this season with the Dallas Mavericks, sending veteran shooter Voshon Lenard and defensive role player Greg Buckner to Dallas for versatile guard Marquis Daniels and the 7'0 project Didier Ilunga-Mbenga.
The Nuggets played fantastic basketball in the final quarter against the Milwaukee Bucks. They managed to hold the Bucks to only 19% shooting, and outscored the Bucks 19-10. Desmond Mason absolutely torched the Nuggets though, as he had a game high 34 points, even though he did not score at all in the fourth quarter. Nene and Marcus Camby each had 10 points and 10 rebounds to get their first double-double of the season.
Voshon Lenard, Andre Miller and Marcus Camby each had an off-night and only scored 9 points in total against the Wizards, but the Nuggets bench of Nene, Earl Boykins and Dermarr Johnson easily picked up the slack for the starters. Nene had his second straight game in scoring in double figures while Dermarr Johnson provided a lovely 15 point, 4 rebound and 3 assist night. Earl Boykins also finished with 13 points and 4 assists to help ease Andre Miller's scoring woes. Kenyon Martin played a big part in the win, scoring 5 straight baskets in the fourth quarter to help squeak by the Wizards.
Days after the Daniels-Lenard trade, the Denver Nuggets went to visit Dallas soon afterwards. Voshon Lenard torched his former team with 23 points in an embarassing blow out defeat. New comer Marquis Daniels scored only 8 points, while Michael Finely looked like he was 25, scoring 23 points and grabbing 6 boards.
Denver managed to bounce back from a disappointing loss to Dallas as the Nuggets beat the Cleveland Cavaliers next game. The hyped Carmelo-LeBron rivalry did not live up to expectations, as Anthony made only 5 of his 22 shot attempts. LeBron however, did lead his team with 24 points, but that was easily forgotten as Marquis Daniels scored 23 points and shook off his disappointing debut. Earl Boykins and Andre Miller rarely played on the court at the same time, but they proved to be an effective duo as they helped propel the Nuggets to a 17-2 run to outscore the Cavs 31 to 16 in the fourth quarter.
Domination was the only word to describe the Nugget's huge win over the Golden State Warriors. Denver easily gained control in the first quarter and they never let up their relentless transition game throughout all four quarters. Marcus Camby scored a season high 19 points and Carmelo Anthony led the Nuggets with 22 points. Baron Davis had a game high 34 points, and was the only player to shoot over 40% for the Warriors.
The Players' Grades
Marcus Camby: B- Camby's overall performance has improved slightly. He came off a recent 19 point 10 rebound game and now averages 9.3 points per game and 9.5 rebounds per game, but he hasn't been blocking shots consistently like he should.
Kenyon Martin: B- Martin's points per game has gone up and is looking like a more capable offensive threat. His blocking, shooting and rebounding numbers have gone slightly downhill though.
Carmelo Anthony: C Almost every statiscal category has gone down, including his exellent shooting percentages. Melo's terrible game in Cleveland is mainly held responsible, but sometimes Anthony needs to stop forcing up shots and take his time with his offence.
Marquis Daniels: B+ His statistics don't do him any justice because he's only been in a Denver uniform for 3 games. Other than his sluggish start, Daniels was looking heaps better. His mid-range game has gotten pretty smooth and his size allows him to overpower many smaller guards.
Andre Miller: B- There was basically no change in Miller's stats, but he did have a huge drop off in three point percentage. It's not as bad as it sounds though, since Miller is really regarded as a three point threat anyway.
Nene: C+ He played really well in his first two games, notching two ten point games including a double-double in his first game. Nene's offensive game wasn't really strong or he did not really make a noticeable impact in the other three games, but for the most part Nene's field goal percentage went from ice cold to a blazing 54% and his rebounding numbers have stayed solid for a guy off the bench.
Earl Boykins: B He had two pretty good against Washington and Cleveland, and a decent one in Golden State, but as the same as last time, his assist numbers still needs some work. Boykins has never had over 6 assists in a game this season.
Dermarr Johnson: C+ Johnson has been moved to the bench for his inconsistency, but the on and off problem is still a concern. He had another decent night scoring 15 points against Washington, but for the most part he has disapeared and after aquiring Marquis Daniels, it looks like the Nuggets have their shooting guard spot set.
Wesley Person: D After trading away Lenard, you'd think that Person would get some more minutes, but Person's shot is plain awful right now and Daniels and Johnson are impressing the coach a lot more with their youthful athleticism.
Smush Parker: B He only played 7 minutes for one game, but he played quite well out there. Parker scored 6 points and handed out 2 assists, but his decision making on the court was exceptionally smooth and he effectively took a lot of players off the dribble on offence.
Question Marks: Eduardo Najera, Luis Flores, Francisco Elson, Didier Ilunga-Mbenga, Bryon Russell.
