You trade for Avi Lee because it happens IRL, then sign Rudy and Hickson because you're the Warriors and can't do better.

Here's a nice scenario, sign Derrick Rose and trade for Carmelo Anthony and maybe trade for a star center.

Tough loss losing the Meal Ticket and Carter but id target David Lee and Rodney Stuckey both players can carry the load and the story going strong.

I too will have to guess that you've signed Duncan, for the novelty of seeing him in another jersey if nothing else.

Johnson's Journal - Part V

Dark Cloud, Silver Lining

After losing Anthony Randolph and Vince Carter to Milwaukee and New Orleans respectively, we seemed destined for another grueling season; then suddenly, our luck took a turn for the better.

The free agent signing period opened on July 25th, and though Carmelo Anthony opted to stay in Denver, several other big-name players decided to test the waters.

Proven veteran champions Tim Duncan of the Spurs and Ray Allen of the Celtics, as well as prime big men Jeff Green of the Thunder and Nene of the Nuggets, all garnered serious consideration. But for us, one name in particular topped the list - the Grizzlies' O.J. Mayo.

Image

Back on December 5th of last season, Mayo's Grizzlies trailed by 9 points entering the 4th, before erupting to rally off a 44-29 period to win the match. We could do little to contain them. Mayo led the charge with 14 in the 4th, a game-high 32 on the night (Read More…) and had left a lasting impression.

Yet despite having such a talented scorer, the Grizzlies struggled with team chemistry. Things deteriorated quickly between Mayo and the Memphis organization towards the end of last season as the reality of a 26-56, second-to-last-place finish sunk in. Accusatory fingers from upper management began to point out scapegoats and a frustrated Mayo stopped short of demanding a trade, though did little to mask his displeasure with the overall situation.

"With a bunch of monkeys running the show, what do you expect about our chances?" Mayo told the press over the summer.

As draft day came, it wasn't a huge surprise for Memphis to select the University of Utah's star guard and NCAA tourney poster child, Levar Wiles, with the third overall pick. Many suspected the draft choice marked the end of Mayo's days in Memphis and sure enough, the next morning Mayo was on the market.

Teams pursuing Mayo included the Jazz, Raptors, Wizards, Pacers and of course ourselves. Team captain, Stephen Curry, even went to visit O.J. out in Memphis. Who knows what was said or discussed, but it must've worked. After a series of negotiations GM Larry Riley somehow, someway won Mayo over.

Image

On August 1st, Mayo agreed to a 6-year front-heavy contract, even backing off about 7 million less than his original asking price. When asked why, he simply responded, "for the good of the team."

Of existing available free agents, Rudy Fernandez marked the next best fit for our needs and he too accepted a contract a few days after Mayo's signing.

Can't Get Noah Satisfaction

The hardest off-season move we had to make was the decision to part ways with Joakim Noah. Bad blood between he and Biedrins had become toxic and their friction wore our patience thin. Ultimately Noah's volatile, confrontational demeanor and his nonchalance in going public about these internal issues, weighted our decision.

We wanted a blue-collar, no-frills, no drama baller and set our sights on mild-mannered David Lee of the Cleveland Cavaliers. It took some creative negotiating involving not only Cleveland but the New Jersey Nets, but ultimately we reached a deal.

Noah was sent back to the Eastern Conference while we brought in Lee as well as rookie guard and 19th overall pick, Ayana Edney (son of former NBA point guard Tyus Edney) plus Chuck Warren, a forward we've had our eyes on since he first entered the league two-seasons ago.

More on them later; but for now here's a breakdown of the three-team trade.

    NEW JERSEY NETS

    Add: Joakim Noah (GS), Stanley Kirk - rookie (13th overall pick)(GS)
    Lost: Andreson Varejao (75), Chuck Warren (74)

    GOLDEN STATE WARRIORS

    Add: David Lee (CLE), Chuck Warren (NJN), Ayana Edney (CLE)
    Lost: Joakim Noah (81), Brantt Dvorak (70), Stanley Kirk*13th (70), Philbert Woods*46th (67)

    CLEVELAND CAVALIERS

    Add: Anderson Varejao (NJN), Brantt Dvorak (GS), Philbert Woods (GS)
    Lost: David Lee (83), Ayana Edney*19th (71)

(NOTE: Accomplished via two in-game trades; hammed up as a 3-team deal for story purposes)

Hope the moves work out, though I'm a little surprised to see you didn't go with Duncan. Also surprised to see he's up to 297 pounds in your Dynasty, given he's currently listed at 260 in real life.

Mayo can light it up in Live 06, a great pick-up. Rudy is a solid pick-up, great job acquiring Lee too. (Y)

Andrew - I considered, but Duncan's age (although I know in Live it hardly plays a factor) and more his asking price put me off. His weight? Not really sure why but guys just tend to pack on the pounds like crazy in my dynasties. I remember in my Rockets, Kobe had ballooned to 243lbs! Made for some pretty funny behind-the-scenes though lol;

Martti - thx man and re: your picks, I'm not a huge fan of AI or Beasley but trading for 'Melo was definitely considered;

Dare - high scoring? Let's hope so!

Oskar - the new additions definitely helped breathe new life into the team, on paper anyways ;)

Sit - thx man; I didn't really follow much about Rudy til I saw him IRL at a recent pre-season game - the guy's got wily skillz!

Thierry - thx as well dude (Y)

Other Off-Season Notables

"I Must Break You"

On July 1, 2012 assistant coach Tyronn Bailey steps down and is replaced on September 14th by Mazi "Sarg" Elway, a former US Marines drill sergeant, defensive tactician and basketball enthusiast. The Sarg won't do much for Golden State's offense but promises to spend his year's contract whipping the men into peak physical condition.

Image

Not Enough Crown To Go Around?

When Ron Artest was awarded Finals MVP and the Lakers won the 2012 NBA championship this past Summer, who knew trouble was already brewing. Artest's resulting fame, late show appearances and video game covers apparently was a little too much for the Lakers' headstrong centerpiece, Kobe Bryant.

"They couldn't have done it without me," were Artest's infamous words in an SI interview which finally set Mamba off and prompted a matter-of-fact, "Oh yes, we could've," public response days after reading Artest's article.

Being tinseltown, the press fanned the flames of the two stars' difference of opinion and an offhand comment soon burst into a full blown media circus of clashing egos. Ultimately 32-year old Artest was sent to the Cleveland Cavaliers in exchange for 29-year old point guard, Mo Williams, with a mere fingersnap to appease LA's one true MVP.

Image

Williams is seen as a big upgrade over 2nd-year pro point guard, Jesse Eldridge, who was undoubtedly the weakest link of last season's championship team; however, Eldridge did do enough for the Lakers to win the title. Whether they can repeat now, without the suffocating defense of Artest, remains to be seen.

No More Mister Nashty

Steve Nash, Jerry Stackhouse, Derrick Fisher, Michael Finley. Just some of league's memorable veterans headed for retirement :(

Warriors Go 'Classic' After Classic Con
Image
The Warriors new 'old' look for 2012-13

October 15, 2012 Oakland, CA (AP) - The Warriors have new players, a new attitude and were meant to have new uniforms with a new team logo and play on a newly designed home court for the coming 2012-13 season. But unfortunately, when the design firm of Vandelay Bros. accepted full advance on the budget of the project then mysteriously stopped communications, shut business and skipped town within days without delivering on any work, Warriors owner Chris Cohan knew he'd been duped.

"The matter between our organization and Vandelay Brothers is still under federal investigation at this time," Cohan told the media in an official press announcement. "But as a result of their unscrupulous activities we won't be receiving a new logo, unis nor court design this season as we had planned and expected to be ready by this time. Instead, our players will be wearing the popular Hardwood Classics 1966-67 "The City" Jerseys by Mitchell & Ness for the coming season… which incidentally bears a striking resemblance to what the Vandelay Brother's proposal for the new logo pretty much looked like anyway… except featuring the new Bay Bridge expansion minus the words, 'The City'..."

Flustered, Cohan dismissed the media and walked off refusing to answer further questions.

Not a huge fan of your signings. Rudy seems to be a decent fit in your system, but Mayo isn't very good (at least irl). Like the trade and new jerseys though.

Wow, unexpected trade by the Lakers there but nice work on the story to go with it. Cool idea to get retro with the jerseys, too.

Clutch, Rudy was great in Euroleague before hopping over to NBA. The time I saw him live though was during 08 Olympics. He was awesome. :)

Lamrock - yeah, luckily RL Mayo's got nothin' on his 'virtual' counterpart ;) easily the top young 2-guard to test FA and since VC took a hike to go play with CP3, Mayo became priority; considered starting Morrow or slotting 'Buike at 2 then pursuing 'Melo but it would've been too costly (player-wise) and also wouldn't make sense since DEN just re-signed him to max as their franchise player;

Andrew - lol yeah that Laker trade caught me off guard; don't think Artest was too bothered about it though since he got his ring, his Finals MVP trophy (lol) and now gets to play with King James on formidable eastern contender;

Martti - can't wait for that matchup! 'Buike should have a field day; then again maybe Ammo will elevate his game this season and rise to the occasion?

Sit - nice… forget why, but I missed most that '08 Olympic coverage; pretty much need Rudy to do for GS just what he does for Portland IRL and I'll be happy :)

Thierry - yeah, that's kinda the sad part of the off-season for me, when names I'm so familiar with and grew up are suddenly on the list :cry:

A Durant, Wade and Westbrook trio will make some real noise. Your team is not too shabby either, average age should be pretty low and the lineups versatile, too. Good job with it!
