DESMOND “sBHzMafia” JACKSON
This 20 year old was born in a small yon town in Mississippi but quickly moved along with his parents to the State of Tennessee and the city of Memphis. He first started fiddling with the orange ball at the age of 4, watching Magic Johnson in his late days, and Larry Bird winning one three point contest after another. A member of his high school’s varsity squad as a junior, Desmond was one of the best 17 year old prospects in the country and definitely the best in-state-product since Penny Hardaway more than 10 years ago…
The recruiters came and went, with many prolific schools being interested in acquiring his services, including North Carolina, Stanford, Kansas and Nebraska… His first option, for some bizarre reason, was to go play in Nebraska, but the recent advent of a Kiwi prospect there had turned the entire campus upside-down and so Jackson decided to attend classes in the local Memphis University and suit up for his childhood favorites, the Tigers… After missing out on recruits such as Amare Stoudamire, Memphis was delighted to land one of the country’s bigger prospect and a sure-fire future NBA-player.
Desmond grew up very fast during the span of his senior high school year, having reached 6” 5” and still growing… The college coaches were trying to get him used to playing the 2, but his first love was and would always be running the point, and using his ferocious personality managed to have his way and play point guard, despite his new height of 6’ 6” at 19 years of age.
His freshman season on court was brilliant. Lacking a better starter, Desmond started at Pg from game 1, and never lost his spot in the team. He averaged 13.2 ppg and 5.5 apg, leading the Tigers to a 27 – 6 regular season record and a spot in the National Tournament… The team was eliminated after having reached Sweet Sixteen, but it was a great year altogether for the southerners… Desmond was named his conference’s freshman of the year, and received numerous in-state awards… Scouts were touting him as a mid to late first rounder in the draft, should he choose to declare after his freshman season. But following his coach’s advice, he decided to stay on for another year and solidify his status as a lottery pick in the ’05draft instead.
Things rarely go as planned, though, and our friend did not see his dreams come out to fruition… Desmond, delighted with all the attention he was getting the past year, really let go of himself and his game during the summer of 2004 The then 19-year old partied hard, drank a lot and neglecting practicing for more than 3 months… He did not attend any classes either, and his professors issued a red flag stating that he needed to shape up if he was going to dress up for the Tigers next season… Having been disillusioned with life in college and after all the pressure, Desmond decided to declare for the ’04 draft anyway, expecting a late first round selection at worst.
But things went worse than expected… His added weight, rusty game , and rumors of his drinking and partying habits did not exactly impress NBA scouts, not to mention that his individual team workouts were below par… On draft night, Desmond would hear teams select every other guy possible before him, and after 60 picks were made, he was left out… Cameras were right on top of him in the end, waiting for a tear or any other Rashard Lewis-like moment. But Desmond would not break. He stared right at the camera, and said with a determined face: “the NBA ha snot heard the last of me, I’ll be back. Count on it… “. He then got up, adjusted his tie, and went out the building with a newly found determination…
Rumors have it that Jackson has only recently signed a 1-year contract with Greek club and Euro league participants, Olympiakos… Is this the chance to redeem himself in the eyes of NBA scouts? His stint in Greece will be a deciding factor…

I love the story! And its kinda amazing how you put something in there about Mississippi because my dad was actually born in Miss., but he was raised in Memphis and I was never raised in Miss. but it was still some good insight GREAT JOB!

FLORIAN “pHLo” Ruf ( A.K.A. : “The German Speed Demon”)
This 20 year old guard out of Bonn, Germany, is one of the few natural born and bred Teutons who have the ability to play in the NBA after Dirk Nowitzki created the precedent. Florien is somewhat undersized at 6’ 1” and 171 lbs for the pros as of now, but look for him to bulk up a bit and make the jump to the other side of the Atlantic Ocean in a couple of years from now.
Born in Bonn, Florian became interested in the game at the early age of 5, shooting the ball in his backyard basket set up by his parents. He quickly joined the pee-wee team of his local city, and by the time he was a 14 year old, everybody in his hometown fairly interested in the sport knew about this kid and his amazing potential.
From then came the transfer to German giants Alba Berlin, where Ruf spent his next 4 years of his carreer. Opportunities to crack into the adult squad were few and far between, but Flo persevered and kept on outworking everyone else in practices, improving his shot from every spot on the court while being almost infallible when shooting the open 3. At the age of 18 and with only 5 pro appearances, Flo accepted an offer from the rising force of German Basketball, the Opel Skyliners.
During his two year tenure with his new team, Florian Ruf was quickly named a starter, and handled the point guard position for the Euroleague team admirably despite his lack of playing experience. Flo had become a lightning quick point guard in the mold of Tony Parker, who was deadly from outside and had great ability in driving and dishing out to his open teammates for the assist. He still needed to work on finishing off his own drives and adding some upper-body strength in order to be a complete player.
Ruf declared for the NBA draft in the summer of 2004 and was selected in the second round by the Orlando magic with the 37th pick, and afterwards being traded to Memphis. His contract with the Skyliners was up, but he was willing to resign when some of his media statements around the time of the draft were blown out of proportion. Asked about Dirk Nowitzki and his NBA career, Flo replied something in the vicinity of “ He’s a fantastic player, but needs to work on his defense.” The media in his home country immediately jumped on him, calling his cocky and over-confident, all the while the Catholic Church of Germany pronounced his a “blasphemer” and tagged him as persona-non-grata in the country….
