Chapter 7
“Korver with another three. It’s a good thing I got him for the team.” Julian said. He was sitting at the bench near the Ballers player. He then takes a glimpse at Shelton Smith who was grasping for air. “What’s wrong with that kid?” Julian said to himself.
The Ballers won the game against the Hornets thanks to clutch play from Marbury. But things aren’t doing well in the locker room, Coach Ewing was upset the way they finished the game. “We are up by 12 points and we almost lost the game, what is wrong with you guys!” Ewing said.
“Coach we did win the game right? There is nothing wrong with winning.” Smith said. “Yeah we did win with you sitting most of the 4th quarter.” Ewing said. Smith did not answer back; he just walked out of the locker room.
The Ballers went on two win the games against Milwaukee and Indiana but losses three straight games on the road. And all the blame goes to the rookie sensation Shelton Smith; he struggled in the last three games.
“Damn, why I am the one to blame?” Smith said while he was doing his early morning shootouts. Even though he was alone he couldn’t hit a shot. Out of frustration he throws the ball straight up in the air. “What the hell is wrong with me?” He shouted.
“It seems like you just hit the wall kid.” Out came a tall man in the shadows. Smith was stunned for a moment. “What wall? The rookie wall, I don’t believe in that stuff.” Smith said. “I think you knew to yourself that you just hit the wall but you did not expect to hit it this early.” The man said.
Smith paused for a couple of seconds. “You’re a vet in this game, any advice old man?” he said. The man laughed and said “You just need to relax and have fun kid. Well I'm looking forward to play with you”
Game against New York…
It’s the end of the first half and the fans at the Garden are all cheering but not on the Knicks but to the rookie Smith. Smith had 38 points in the first half alone and the fans all cheering for his name, he even got MVP chants when his on the line.
“Good game kid better relax for now we still have a long game to go.” Patrick Ewing said. “No coach, I’m just warming up. I’m gonna show that old man that I can go over the wall, this will be the most dominating performance he will see.” Smith said.
