The United Center. So much history, so much enthusiasm. This was definitely Chicago. Mike took a look around the stands at the ocean of red that filled the seats. It was absolutely astounding. Coach Jordan told Black he was thinking about starting him, although it wasn’t likely; he had also said that he would probably be playing a lot of shooting guard, with Duhon being as undersized as he is. The tip-off started as soon as these thoughts ended, and Washington won it. Black watched as a minute worth of game time only produced a 2-2 game – and 2 Caron Butler fouls. “Black, get in there and shut Chris down.” Mike nodded his head and trotted out onto the court after a deflected pass by the Wizards on the Bulls’ end of the court. He stood next to Chris Duhon, who was shorter than he expected, waiting for Chicago’s inbounds play to start.
“Break!” called Andres Nocioni from the sideline. The Bulls went in motion as Duhon set a pick for Heinrich. Mike tried to call it out, but his reaction was too late. Heinrich caught the pass and drove in past Gilbert Arenas, who was fighting through the pick. Black tried to stop him from behind, but even he, one of the fastest players in the league, couldn’t get there in time. Heinrich had scored the bucket with a layup, gliding right past Haywood.
After another failed Wizards possession, Heinrich drove past Arenas again – but this time Haywood wasn’t having it. He tried to go up for the block on Kirk, but the ball wasn’t what he hit. Haywood’s hand has made solid contact with Heinrich’s head. Whistles blew and benches flared, but Black could tell from the look on Haywood’s face it was an accident. No flagrant foul was called, but Heinrich had to be taken out of the game for the time being. Other than that, the quarter was uneventful for Mike; he scored 2 points and had 4 assists, including an alley-oop to Brendan Haywood, but Washington was still losing. With a minute left in the quarter, Black was pulled to put Butler back in. Mike just sat on the bench and watched, as the quarter ended with the Wizards losing 21-15 after the 1st quarter was up.
Mike sat for the beginning of the second quarter, and the middle, and the end. To his disappointment, he had not seen the hardwood since he had been pulled in the first. He had always let the coaches make the on-court decisions, though, so he did not say anything. The Wizards had battled back, taking the lead 31-29, but the Bulls went on a run led by the now-recovered Kirk Heinrich to take the lead again before halftime, 37-33. After the low-scoring quarter, the Wizards walked to their locker room, readying themselves for another long and painful halftime speech. Coach Jordan was talking, but Black wasn’t listening. He was worried about what he could do to help the team win this game.
Black was still sitting on the bench throughout the first couple minutes of the third, but was finally put back in when third string PG Antonio Daniels started to struggle. He got in and, Arenas back to the point and Black playing SG, guarded Ben Gordon tightly – he had watched him light up the Wizards for the last two and a half quarters and was determined to contain him. Jannero Pargo, the backup PG for Chicago, handed the ball off to Gordon. Mike forced him into a bad shot and got the outlet from Jarvis Hayes. He ran upcourt to start a 2-on-1 break – Black and Haywood vs. Pargo. Mike drew the defender towards him, and then threw up the oop to Haywood as he threw down a powerful dunk. “That’s right, that’s right!” Haywood said, exchanging a high-five with Black while running back to the Bulls’ basket to play defense. After another bad shot and an outlet from Jeffries, Mike was all alone in the open court with Pargo. Just one move to get by him. He started, then he was laid out on the floor like a quarterback being punished by a 300-pound linemen. Pargo leaned down, got right in Black’s face, and whispered, “Welcome to the NBA, rookie.” Black was taken out for the last minute of the quarter to catch his breath. The Wizards narrowed the lead down to 2, with the score at 55-53. A brief fourth quarter speech came from Coach Jordan: “Get out there and kick ass!”
Black came back in for the fourth because Heinrich had too, and with Arenas guarding Heinrich they needed Black to shut down Gordon. Black was the leading the point with Arenas at the two this time, and before he even had a chance to call a play he saw Haywood backcut right past his man, so he did what he’d been doing all night; he threw up an oop to Haywood, their third connection of the night. The crowd quieted down and this sparked a run by the Wiz to get themselves ahead, and Black held Gordon to only 3 points – a FG and a free-throw – during the quarter. When the Bulls started fouling with a minute left, Black was pulled to put in their top free-throw shooters, and was greeted with high-fives and ass-slaps when he got back to the bench. He sat back and watched with a smile as the Wizards beat the Bulls by 12 to bring their record to 2-0.
There is no truth. There is only you and what you make the truth.
