The SuperSonics are staying in Seattle (4-1 and signing)

Fri Nov 03, 2006 6:07 am

Wanting to jump right in and not wait for roster patches with the few added bodies that made opening day rosters, and because I wanted to take over a team and not feel held down by the way the team is operating currently, I simulated the entire 2006-2007 season and ushering in a coaching and management change for the 2007-2008 season, starting in the offseason beforehand.

Let me give you a quick recap of the happenings in 2006-2007:

Worst trade ever (and one that might have cost Phoenix the crown) as the Suns give up Amare Stoudamire for the Kings' Mike Bibby.

Nene makes his way to Dallas to be their starting centre and Dallas is relieved of the expiring contract of Jerry Stackhouse.

Garnett took home the MVP hardware while the Spurs defeated the Nets in a sweep: Manu Ginobili was crowned Finals MVP.

That about takes us to where my tenure with the Supersonics commences. The team finished with the second worst mark in the NBA, thus I am playing Jesus and reviving this franchise.

Also, I apologize in advance that I'm not expending too much effort on formatting my posts.

Another note, I sim the first 3 quarters and if the point differential at the end of the 3rd quarter is within 8 points on either side, I play the fourth quarter. I play every game, so I will re-sim until I get a score which I can play with and have a shot.

2007 Offseason for the Seattle Supersonics:

Re-signed PF Chris Wilcox for 38.53 mil over 5 years
Re-signed PG Luke Ridnour for 16.70 mil over 3 years
Re-signed PF Nick Collison for 9.80 mil over 4 years
Did not renew SF Noel Felix's contract
Did not renew C Danny Fortson's contract
Did not renew PF Josh Powell's contract (acquired him in a trade in the first season)

Seattle got the shaft and ended up with the 4th and 32nd overall picks in the draft.
With the 4th overall pick, PF Colman Davis from Tennessee was selected. He is a good defender and free throw shooter but not a great rebounder and doesn't need many touches on the offensive end.
With the 32nd overall pick, SG Scottie Ripley from Alabama was selected. An undersized over-conditioned 2-guard with an average shot, this Washington state native runs like the wind (starting speed and quickness ratings in the 80s) and is not a bad defender even outside of his size.

During the free agency period there was little major activity. Seattle's transactions were:
Signed SF Ndudi Ebi to a minimum contract.
Signed SF Bruno Harrison to a minimum contract. Harrison went undrafted but is a freak athlete with an above average shot, blocking abilities and unprecedented speed for a 6'7 wingman. He is a very poor rebounder and not well conditioned.

One more move before the off-season was complete saw Seattle and Golden State swap centres (and some pieces) giving Seattle another young big man with heaps of potential, especially on the defensive end:
Traded SF Mikael Gelable, SF Bruno Harrison and C Saer Sene for C Andris Biedrins.

Staff signings happened, but they don't matter.

Your 2007-2008 Seattle Supersonics:

Starting Line-up:

C Robert Swift
- Redheaded big man is being thrust into the spotlight and in a contract year no less. Expecting 11 points, 9 boards and 1.5 blocks is not unreasonable.
71 overall

PF Chris Wilcox
- After landing a big contract this off-season, Wilcox is expected to perform. Averages of 15 and 7 should be achievable. His defense will need to improve though to hold on to his starter minutes.
76 overall

SF Rashard Lewis
- 6'10 small forward can do it all and will be the 2nd scoring option for the Supersonics. Should push his ppg to around 20 and haul down his share of rebounds. He will be counted on for heavy minutes and shut down defense with his length on the perimeter.
83 overall

SG Ray Allen
- The team's major source of points, he can stroke it from all over. With an offense set to give him lots of looks, he should be in the top 10 for ppg. Along with a steal a game and a handful of assists, not to mention at least 2.5 3 pointers per game, Allen will be earning his large salary.
88 overall

PG Luke Ridnour
- With a new contract for the next 3 years, there is a mutual commitment between the organization and this playmaker. Though he won't lead the league in assists with a slower offense he will be counted on for a high assists-to-turnover ratio. 11 points and 5.5 assists per game will satisfy the coach, but he has heavy competition and if he does not perform up to snuff, he easily could be usurped.
72 overall

The Bench:

PF Colman Davis
- with a keen defensive eye and power moves inside on offense, the 4th overall pick should exceed the expectations of ESPN analysts who graded his selection a C. Can play centre as well. Looks to contribute more as a presence than on paper, but could rack up a few blocks. A steady free throw shooter, combined with his defensive prowess could make his very useful in close late game situations.
71 overall

PF Nick Collison
- being a smart big man might be his key to cracking the rotation among so many others. Decent shooter, but his head and nose-to-the-grindstone effort were the reasons for his re-signing.
69 overall

C Andris Biedrins
- Battling Swift for the big minutes at the 5, and also in a contract year, this oversized Euro was acquired to plug up the lane. Not much of an offensive threat yet, he can do a little damage but his attractiveness to the organization lay in his defensive capabilities. Could garner serious minutes and perhaps, if stars shift slightly, a starting position.
69 overall

PG Earl Watson
- Somehow earning more than the man starting ahead of him, Watson is the type of defensive player the Supersonics are looking for. Also able to contribute on the offensive end, especially setting up plays, Watson will likely play the most (or secondmost to Biedrins) minutes off the bench and sometimes in key moments ahead of Ridnour. Who starts at the point, along with the battle for starting centre, could see oscillations back and forth throughout the season.
66 overall

SG Damien Wilkins
- A solid reserve, more likely to get his minutes behind Lewis rather than Allen, he will play a bit but is expendable but for his long contract.
66 overall

SG Scottie Ripley
- the second pick of the second round could see some minutes because of his tenacity on both ends but his height and Ray Allen will prevent him from contending for serious playing time.
65 overall

SF Ndudi Ebi
- A journeyman and still so young, Ebi will likely not see minutes barring an injury anywhere on the wing or at power forward. A tremendous athlete and shot-blocker extrodinaire, he just doesn't have enough other attributes to earn him playing time.
63 overall

Inactive List:

Johan Petro
- Even with the moving of Sene, he still can't crack the rotation and the addition of Biedrins insures he will spent most of the last two years of his contract on the bench, and not suited up.
59 overall

The opening game of the 2007-08 season for Seattle saw the Supersonics struggle to keep it close, but fell 119-114 in Arizona. The game started slow but Phoenix let loose in the second half and the Sonics’ new defensive structure appeared vulnerable to the speedy combination of Nash and Barbosa who combined for 48 points. Ray Allen kept his team in the game with his pinpoint accuracy, draining 10-of-14 three pointers and finished with 45 points, 8 rebounds and 3 steals. Rashard Lewis put forth a valiant effort as well in the loss, finishing with 28 points, 8 rebounds, 2 steals and 2 blocks. Robert Swift posted a nice stat line, but his 4-of-16 shooting from the floor was costly. Watson provided an offensive and defensive spark off the bench, subbing in for Luke Ridnour to pressure Nash. Colman Davis failed to score a point in his 13 minutes, but second round pick Scottie Ripley sunk a free throw to record his first NBA point. The second half was peppered by Sonic turnovers, leading to the up-tempo pace the Suns prefer.

The second game of the season saw Seattle taking a 72-71 lead into the final quarter against the hometown Lakers. Bryant was winning the most important battle, against Ray Allen, up 21 to 8 in points going into the fourth; however, it was to be Allen’s day. He shot 5-of-8 from the field, 2-of-2 from 3-point range and perfect from the free throw line and while ended up with less points overall, his effort in the fourth gave Seattle the edge to take the game 109-99. Lewis pitched in with 26 points and 8 rebounds, while Luke Ridnour scored 19 points and had 5 assists. Robert Swift recorded a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Colman Davis scored 2 baskets in the final quarter, recording his first NBA scores, and added 2 steals and 3 blocks, showing the dedication to the defensive end for which he was drafted. For the Lakers, Bryant finished with 29 points, Odom 20 points and 11 rebounds and Brown had 14 rebounds, including 5 on the offensive end. Both Odom and Brown had two blocks and two steals a piece in their losing effort.

The 1-1 Seattle went into Golden State with three former Sonics dressed in Warrior orange and found themselves leading 78-74 after three quarters. Though only undrafted rookie signee Bruno Harrison was dressed, seeing two former team mates was difficult for the men in green. Surprisingly lead by Robert Swift’s team high 21 points and Rashard Lewis’ 16-10 double-double the SuperSonics’ defensive pressure had held Davis and Richardson to a combined 23 points. The fourth quarter saw Ray Allen again get ridiculously hot and pouring in 21 points and Golden State could not find answers to all of them, ultimately falling 116-109. On top of his 33 points, Allen had a team high 7 assists to lead his team to victory. Former Warrior Andris Biedrins had 4 points and 4 rebounds in his limited minutes, but still seems uncomfortable in the Seattle offensive and defensive systems; fortunately, Swift has produced much more than expected of him, completing this game with 13 rebounds and 2 blocks on 50% shooting. Dunleavy and Davis’ offensive games picked up and they finished with 25 points each, while rookie Rivera pitched in a surprising 10 points in the first half. Murphy fouled out early in the fourth but was a significant offensive factor matched up against Chris Wilcox.

I would, but my graphics card is painfully horrible, to the point where my game shots would be distorted. Else, I would. I used to.

On the road in Sacramento, the SuperSonics held a 77-76 point lead going into the fourth on the back of Ray Allen’s 22 point performance. Momentum, however, swung to the home team and the backcourt of Fransisco Garcia and Nate Robinson overran Seattle’s defense. Amare Stoudemire, who was acquired for Mike Bibby the previous season, was a force on the boards but was not his former offensive self, finishing with 16 in both categories. Allen cooled off and after going 4-of-6 from beyond the 3-point arc, he hit only 1 of the 5 he attempted in the final frame. Luke Ridnour continued his strong play but still is struggling to lead his team in assists. Lewis was his usual steady self, chipping in 24 points, including 6 3-pointers, 8 rebounds and two pilfers. Chris Wilcox again failed to meet expectations with an underwhelming 7 point, 9 rebound performance; true, while his defensive capabilities (2 blocks as well) and rebounding were underestimated, his offensive production, where he was expected to be a solid contributor, has been much less than anticipated. Of the bench, Earl Watson and Damien Wilkins continue to make good use of their minutes, notching a combined 11 points in 30 man-minutes; Ripley sunk a single free throw and seems lost but not without promise; Biedrins looks like a poor pick-up after failing to score a point in limited minutes, but his presence on defence has been effective; Colman Davis continues to shy away from his shot but recorded 3 steals with his 4 points.

Against their division rival in Denver, the SuperSonics had matched the Nuggets’ output, ushering a 57-57 tie into the fourth. With a less-than-typical performance by Ray Allen (30% shooting and 0-of-5 from 3-point territory), Rashard Lewis again bore the burden of the scoring with the help of Luke Ridnour. Jerry Stackhouse had kept Denver in the game with his team high 12 points off the bench, outdoing starting SF Carmelo Anthony by 4 points. The end was tension filled but ultimately the underdogs and visitors prevailed 93-89 on the back on Allen’s rediscovery of his shot and his 13 point performance in the quarter. A surprising offensive spurt by Chris Wilcox saw him finishing with 12 points, 13 rebounds and 2 blocks. The bench was lead by Earl Watson’s 8 points and 2 steals, one of which came quite timely in the final quarter. Lewis continued his shutdown defence on Anthony, holding his to just 3 more points, finishing with 11 but Ray Allen was blown out of the water by J.R. Smith who finished with a team-high 27 points on 9-of-15 shooting, 8 of which he hit in his last 12 minutes. Camby put up the most intriguing stat line: 15 points, 8 rebounds, 7 assists, 3 steals and 4 blocks.

5 games into the season, some conclusions can be drawn about the SuperSonics’ roster: Scottie Ripley is not yet ready for minutes and certainly not for a role as an offensive weapon; Andris Biedrins looks helpless on offense but could be a key contributor to the defensive structure of the team; Colman Davis flops from solid to mediocre but looks poised to break out given the right circumstances; Nick Collison was not intended to be signed as a 3rd stringer which means he’s being underutilized and overpaid, but if Seattle keeps winning with him riding pine, it might not be so bad.

This has prompted the signing of SF Bernard Robinson to a minimum contract. He is being moved to the active roster, replacing Ndudi Ebi. Additionally, Johan Petro was activated from the IL and will take the roster spot of Scottie Ripley. This should beef up the front line and shore up the defense behind Lewis.
