Mamba Out: Kobe Bryant Retires As The Second All-Time Leading Scorer

Image

Image

DENVER, CO -- After 22 years, and barring a drastic change of heart, Kobe Bryant is riding off into the sunset. Addressing the crowd in the Los Angeles Lakers' final regular season game in Denver, Kobe declared "Mamba Out!" Bryant scored 12 points to go along with five rebounds and five assists, but the Nuggets won the game 104-80, putting a damper on his send-off.

Despite a valiant run during the second half of the season, the Los Angeles Lakers fell short of the eighth seed. Kobe, a five-time champion, had spoken of feeling inspired to make one last Playoff run. "You never know what'll happen until you get there," he remarked while the Lakers were still in Playoff contention. "You've just got to go out there and compete."

In addition to his five rings, Kobe Bryant ends his career with 37,410 points, the second-most all-time behind fellow Laker Legend, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Fittingly, Kobe passed Karl Malone for second place on January 31st, in a 108-107 victory over the Utah Jazz. He also scored a season-high of 30 points against the Boston Celtics - the team he and the Lakers defeated for his fifth ring - on February 22nd, but his regular season was peppered with single-digit scoring nights as age finally appeared to catch up to the Mamba.

"It's time," Kobe said after the game. "I have no regrets. I know this team will move forward with LeBron leading the way. It's been an honour to play my final four seasons with him. I'll be cheering them on from the sidelines."

Although Kobe insists that he's done, the Lakers are reportedly trying to talk him into returning for an unprecedented 23rd season. It's also expected that other teams will be making overtures in the hopes that Kobe might jump ship for a year-long farewell tour, and possible chance of a sixth ring to match the great Michael Jordan. Andrew Begley has expressed interest in Kobe joining him in Philadelphia, where Bryant was born. "It'd be an honour to help him get the all-time scoring record," commented A-Train, who himself has achieved new marks for scoring prowess this season.

Whatever happens next, one thing is clear: Kobe Bryant is bound for Springfield, following one of the best and most spectacular careers in league history. If the Mamba truly is out, then he's leaving us with a lifetime of memories.

Top-Seeded Timberwolves Lose Rubio for Season

Image

MINNEAPOLIS, MN -- The Minnesota Timberwolves finished the 2018 regular season on top of the West, but can't be feeling on top of the world right now, as two-time All-Star and starting point guard Ricky Rubio has been ruled out for the rest of the season after suffering a torn MCL.

Rubio suffered the injury during the second quarter of the Timberwolves' regular season finale, a 114-105 victory over the Houston Rockets; the team they're about to face in the opening round of the Playoffs. A hush fell over what had been a jubilant crowd at the Target Center, as Rubio grimmaced in pain on the floor. Even after the victory, they remained subdued, correctly fearing the worst.

The Timberwolves made a stunning Cinderella run to the NBA Finals in 2016 despite Rubio battling injuries for much of the regular season and Playoffs, where they fell to the Philadelphia 76ers in four games. Since then, Rubio has become an All-Star, and was instrumental in their rise to the top of the Western Conference this year, averaging 13.4 ppg, 5.4 rpg, 9.1 apg, and 2.2 spg, while shooting a career-best 43% from downtown. He also set new single game career highs with 27 points and 20 assists.

"We're trying to stay positive," Timberwolves co-captain Kevin Love told reporters. "Obviously, we want Ricky out there with us. He's our maestro, after all. But we can't give up. A couple of years ago, we did the unthinkable. We're going to give it our all."

In addition to being ruled out for the remainder of the 2018 season, Rubio is expected to miss a significant portion of next season. Primary playmaking duties will likely fall to rookie Todd Walls, a combo guard who also spent time running the point at Kentucky last year. Veteran shooting guard Kevin Martin is also expected to move into the starting lineup alongside Walls.

2018 Playoffs Filled With Intriguing Subplots

Image

The 2018 regular season is in the books, and the postseason is upon us! A couple of seeds weren't decided until the final night, with the defending champion Philadelphia 76ers crushing the New York Knicks' Playoff hopes in their regular season finale. The first round matchups are as follows:

EAST

Philadelphia 76ers (1) vs Orlando Magic (8)
Detroit Pistons (4) vs Cleveland Cavaliers (5)
Milwaukee Bucks (3) vs Indiana Pacers (6)
Washington Wizards (2) vs Chicago Bulls (7)

WEST

Minnesota Timberwolves (1) vs Houston Rockets (8)
New Orleans Pelicans (4) vs Golden State Warriors (5)
Portland Trail Blazers (3) vs San Antonio Spurs (6)
Los Angeles Clippers (2) vs Sacramento Kings (7)

As the Playoffs get underway, there are several stories to keep an eye on...

Image

The Philadelphia 76ers are primed to make a run at their fifth-consecutive championship. Despite being without Terry Hanson for most of the year, and Carmelo Anthony for long stretches as well, they once again went 81-1 in the regular season. Andrew Begley was again spectacular, leading the league in all five major categories on route to his fifth Most Valuable Player award. The 76ers are heavy favourites, but nothing is guaranteed, and there are questions about their future. Melo has made it clear that he intends to explore free agency, and seems unlikely to return. Having already won rings with the 76ers, Melo appears to be interested in a role as the top option again, and likely one last big payday. Whatever happens in the Drive for Five, we could be seeing a different Philadelphia team next year.

After making it to the Finals in 2014, the Portland Trail Blazers have since developed a reputation for choking in the first round. They'll be looking to end that streak this year, but will have to overcome a much-improved San Antonio Spurs team. The Spurs bottomed out following Tim Duncan's retirement, but have bounced back this year after adding James Harden and Tristan Thompson in the offseason. Several pundits have picked them as the most likely team to make an underdog run, something the Blazers obviously hope to prevent.

Golden State are back in the Playoffs, thanks to the stellar play of Steph Curry and Rookie of the Year Lonny Fowlkes. Klay Thompson has adjusted to his bench role admirably, and remains a threat whenever he's in the game. The Warriors' clash with the defending Western Conference champion Pelicans could be one of the most exciting first round matchups, with Jrue Holiday and Anthony Davis leading the way for New Orleans.

Speaking of former Western champs, despite being the top seed, the Minnesota Timberwolves will need to recapture the underdog energy that led them all the way to the 2016 NBA Finals after losing Ricky Rubio to injury in the final game of the regular season; coincidentally against their first round opponent, the Houston Rockets. Jeremy Lin and Dwight Howard carried the Rockets to a respectable 42-40 record following the departure of James Harden this past offseason, while Evan Turner has championship experience from his days with the 76ers. Minnesota is still favoured, but might find themselves in a battle if they can't finish the series quickly.

For the second year in a row, the Detroit Pistons enter the postseason as the fourth seed in the East, with the honour of being the only team to defeat the Philadelphia 76ers during the regular season. Jackson Ellis remains the star in Motown, and could be on a collision course with A-Train in the second round once again. He'll need to outplay Kyrie Irving and the Cleveland Cavaliers to get there, though.

The Milwaukee Bucks have the best backcourt in the league in Tracy Brock and Pat Clemons, but the Indiana Pacers have a great duo of their own in Paul George and Malik Garrett. Milwaukee has given the 76ers problems at times, which may lead to an epic Eastern Conference Finals showdown if both teams get through. The Los Angeles Clippers have been one of the best teams in the West the past few seasons, only to flame out in the Playoffs. They're entering the postseason relatively healthy though, which bodes well for their chances...at least for getting by the Sacramento Kings in the first round.

Washington has very quietly had a fine season, despite losing dynamic backup point guard Elden Jennings for the year. The Wizards face a Chicago Bulls teams that has had a disappointing season, after years as a legitimate contender. Injuries haven't helped the team from the Windy City, though many fans have been grumbling that the team re-signed Derrick Rose rather than making a serious bid for A-Train, given the reigning MVP's apparent interest in joining them.

We could be due to a big shake-up in the offseason, from the defending champions right down to the last-placed Oklahoma City Thunder. Before that though, we can expect some fantastic basketball to be played in the 2018 postseason! Will the 76ers complete their Drive for Five, or will a new champion stand tall when it's all said and done? Get ready for an exciting two months of NBA action!

Magic Hand 76ers Second Loss Of Season, Trail 2-1

Image

Image

ORLANDO, FL -- The Orlando Magic became just the second team to defeat the Philadelphia 76ers in the past two seasons, and the first team to hand them a Playoff loss since the Portland Trail Blazers in the 2014 NBA Finals. Led by the championship experience of Dwyane Wade, and the hot shooting of Jimmy Perkinson and Victor Oladipo, the eighth-seeded Magic triumphed 115-110 over the defending champions in Game 3.

Unfazed by the 76ers' five point lead at the end of the first quarter, the Magic began a run in the second quarter that set the tone for the rest of the game. They led by two at halftime, and continued their momentum throughout the second half, leading by as many as twelve late in the fourth. A furious rally by the 76ers closed the gap in the waning minutes, but the champs were unable to storm back to claim victory as they've previously done on several occasions this season.

Wade finished with 18 points to go along with 13 assists and five steals. Oladipo led the way with 24 points and added six assists, while Perkinson had 21 points on a blistering 10-for-12 shooting, as well as a team high seven rebounds. Tobias Harris also scored in double figures for the Magic with 18 points.

Carmelo Anthony, the leading scorer so far in the Playoffs, hit his average with 36 points and had nine rebounds, but failed to tally an assist. Five-time MVP Andrew Begley scored 29 for the 76ers, but had an unusually tough night shooting the ball, going 12-for-27. He also had 15 assists, eight rebounds, and seven steals, but turned the ball over 11 times. Nerlens Noel was the only other 76er to fill the stat sheet, with 24 points and eight rebounds.

"We didn't match their energy at all," A-Train said after the game. "Their confidence was high going into the second half, and we never got out of first gear. I made some bad decisions with the ball, sloppy turnovers. I have to be better than that." A-Train, who is averaging 4.6 fouls per game compared to just two during the regular season, brushed off questions about the officiating. "I'm not going to blame anything on (the foul calls). A couple more buckets, a few less turnovers, and we could be up 3-0 now."

Regular starter Michael Carter-Williams played just seven minutes off the bench for the 76ers, after tweaking his ankle in Game 2. He's currently listed as day-to-day, with Tony Wroten stepping into the starting lineup in his place. Game 4 will take place in Orlando on Wednesday.

Melo Out, Man
By Skip T. Grind

Image
All signs point to Melo leaving Philadelphia

Carmelo Anthony is making an estimated $21.8 million to play for the defending champion Philadelphia 76ers this year. He's won three rings with the team, and has an excellent opportunity to win a fourth. He's leading all players in scoring so far in the Playoffs, putting up 36.3 ppg. And yet, he keeps takling about how he'll be testing the waters of free agency this offseason.

What is wrong with this man?

Don't get me wrong. In a profession where players are sent all over the country with a single phone call, no one can begrudge Anthony for looking out for number one. Loyalty should be a two way street, and so many teams - and fans - expect players to pledge fealty to their club without it being reciprocated. On top of that, Anthony has been an All-Star for the 76ers, playing a significant role in their title runs. He's within his rights to seek other opportunities as a free agent.

But this constant talk of how he's going to explore free agency before the season has ended, indeed in the thick of the Playoffs? Really, Melo? Really?!?

Anthony's impending free agency and his apparent dissatisfaction have been a distraction all season long. It's incredible that it hasn't had more of an impact on the team's success so far; a testament to how the whole roster has rallied around their Drive for Five despite being plagued by injuries, to say nothing of yet another spectacular season from Andrew Begley.

Speaking of A-Train, he's tried to keep the peace. He's talked about Melo's importance to the team, how much they all want him to be a part of the dynasty they're establishing. Unfortunately, it's looking likely that Melo won't mellow out, and so it'll be a case of Melo Out come July.

In case you're wondering where the rift began, Anthony's uneasiness in Philadelphia reportedly began last season, a campaign he missed all but five games of after suffering a torn MCL in 2016. The team's success without him, and the emergence of Terry Hanson as a star, is said to have severely bruised his ego. Not even being the second option on a championship-winning team as Hanson was sidelined for the 2017 Playoffs could soothe those hurt feelings.

And so, here we are. It's been speculated that A-Train has been taking a back seat to Anthony on offense so far in the Playoffs, setting him up as the team's top scorer in the hopes that he'll change his mind about leaving. Following a shocking 115-110 loss to the Orlando Magic in Game 3, and given Melo's continued grumbling and talk of free agency, it wouldn't surprise anyone if A-Train starts waving him off and looking for his own shot more often. The team certainly looked better when he was racking up 50-point games back in February.

As much as the 76ers deny there are problems - and Melo himself has been backtracking and downplaying his remarks when pressed for further comment - it seems inevitable that a split is coming. There could be other changes to the roster as well, though A-Train, Hanson, Michael Carter-Williams, and Nerlens Noel seem locks to stay; at least for now. Even if they are in shape to contend for a possible sixth championship next season, Melo probably won't be a part of that team.

Of course, they have to win their fifth first, and distractions like Carmelo Anthony openly discussing free agency plans won't help. Melo has every right to keep his options open, leave if he wishes, and of course, speak his mind. It would behoove him to be a professional though, and right now, he's anything but that. If I'm a coach or player on the 76ers right now, I'm pulling him aside and telling Melo to mellow out, man!

2018 First Round Recap

Image

The defending champion Philadelphia 76ers are moving on to the second round. While that isn't exactly surprising, the Orlando Magic stealing Game 3 to avoid a sweep certainly caught everyone off guard! The champs proceeded to take care of business in Games 4 and 5 though, cruising to victory. They once again find themselves facing Detroit in the second round, after the Pistons swept the Cleveland Cavaliers. It should be another exciting chapter in the rivalry between Andrew Begley and Jackson Ellis.

Derrick Rose's injuries contributed to an underwhelming regular season for the Chicago Bulls, but they appear to be in good form come the postseason, as they upset the second-seeded Washington Wizards in seven games. The duo of Rose and Jimmy Butler will have their hands full with the Bucks' backcourt tandem of Tracy Brock and Pat Clemons, after Milwaukee prevailed against the Indiana Pacers in a series that also went the distance.

Unfortunately for the Minnesota Timberwolves, the top seed in the West struggled with Ricky Rubio sidelined indefinitely with a torn MCL. The eighth-seeded Houston Rockets stormed to a 4-1 series upset, led by Jeremy Lin and Dwight Howard. They'll be squaring off with last year's Western Conference Champions, the New Orleans Pelicans. Anthony Davis has had a strong postseason so far, leading all players in blocks and rebounds. The showdown between Davis and Howard inside promises to be an entertaining one.

Portland finally broke their first round curse, downing the new-look San Antonio Spurs in five games. The Los Angeles Clippers also avoided first round disappointment as they dispensed with the Sacramento Kings in six games, setting up a clash between two teams that have fallen short of expectations in recent years. It'll also see a battle of elite point guards, as the Blazers' Damian Lillard goes head-to-head with the architect of Lob City, Chris Paul.

While the Philadelphia 76ers remain the favourites to complete their Drive for Five, nothing is guaranteed until the final buzzer, and there's plenty of intrigue as the second round gets underway!

2018 Second Round Recap

Image

We're just two rounds away from crowning the 2018 NBA Champions, but that leaves plenty more basketball left to be played! Andrew Begley and the defending champion Philadelphia 76ers swept Jackson Ellis and their rival Detroit Pistons in the second round, closing out the series with a hard-fought victory in which Carmelo Anthony led all scorers with 40 points. Unfortunately for the 76ers, they lost Tony Wroten for the rest of the postseason with a severe ankle sprain, while Thaddeus Young's court time has been limited by back spasms.

They'll face a familiar foe in the Chicago Bulls. The seventh seed in the East has been the Cinderella story of the Conference, toppling the Washington Wizards in the first round in a seven game series, and defeating the Milwaukee Bucks 4-2 in the second round to advance to the Eastern Conference Finals once again. They'll be without Carlos Boozer however, as the power forward joined the ranks of players who have suffered a season-ending knee injury this year. The Eastern Conference Finals may come down to a war of attrition, not to mention a showdown of superstar point guards.

Out West, the Portland Trail Blazers outlasted the Los Angeles Clippers, taking the series in seven to advance to the Conference Finals for the first time since 2014. After years of first round disappointment, it appears that the Blazers have what it takes to make a serious run at the NBA Finals, where they may well have a rematch with the Philadelphia 76ers. The Blazers were the last team to hand the 76ers a Playoff loss until the Orlando Magic took a game from them in the first round this year.

Speaking of rematches, last year's Western Conference Champions, the New Orleans Pelicans, would surely love to have another shot at the 76ers as well. Anthony Davis continues to be a force in the paint for the Pelicans, while Jrue Holiday has been one of the premier playmakers this postseason. They didn't have too much trouble with the Houston Rockets in the second round, defeating them in five games. The stage seems to have been set for another clash that goes the distance, with the third-seeded Trail Blazers holding homecourt advantage.

Four teams sit just eight wins away from a championship. Will the 76ers complete their Drive for Five, or will the Trail Blazers or Pelicans get their revenge? Will the Chicago Bulls finally sit atop the NBA again for the first time in twenty years? We won't have to wait too long to find out!
