A Fantasy World - Year One (Rockets)

Postby yeahnah on Fri Mar 04, 2022 10:30 pm

Introduction

G'day - I used to lurk here years ago and tried my hand at a few stories nearly a decade ago (!). I know this board doesn't get much interest these days but I will enjoy posting my progress here for my own enjoyment. The beauty of running an association the way I do is that I gain an appreciation for new teams and players that I never would have considered previously. I ran something like this offline last season and had barrels of fun so hopefully it happens again! This story will probably feature very little multimedia but please bear with me as I finalise a structure for each post.

The premise:

Fantasy draft - 29 game season - Each year I change teams at the will of RNG.

To begin I randomly selected the team I will be running with for Year One and received the Houston Rockets. I allowed myself to make the first five selections in the fantasy draft before submitting to the will of simulation. The Rockets received the 27th pick in the first round of the serpentine draft and managed to piece together a strong young side for the first season:

HOUSTON ROCKETS OPENING NIGHT ROSTER 2021-22

PG - Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (87)
SG - D’Angelo Russell (83)
SF - Harrison Barnes (81)
PF - Danilo Gallinari (78)
C - Jarrett Allen (86)

Shai was our first pick, followed by Allen. D’Lo and his rough contract dropped to the late third round which gives us a quasi big three and Barnes and Gallinari are perfect players to round out the starting line up. The bench that was picked by the simulation has given us some nice young pieces and handy role players. They are:

Grayson Allen (77) | Jalen Green (76) | John Konchar (76) | Precious Achiuwa (76) | Greg Brown (73) | Charles Bassey (73) | Duane Washington Jr. (73) | Chris Clemons (73) | Dylan Windler (73)

The following posts will be a recap of how each team stacks up going into this season to immerse myself (and the readers!) in this unique game world.

Around The League - From Worst To Best
Thanks to NBA.com

30th: Cleveland Cavaliers
Ayo Dosunmu | C.J. McCollum | Aaron Nesmith | Julius Randle | Onyeka Okongwu | 6th: Darius Bazley
The Cavs didn’t fare too well in the fantasy draft and will be riding the shoulders of Randle to be competitive this season. Hopefully Dosunmu and bench player Bones Hyland can develop nicely in Ohio

29th: Charlotte Hornets
Dennis Schroder | Isaac Okoro | Saddiq Bey | Evan Mobley | DeAndre Ayton | 6th: Anfernee Simons
Charlotte has some incredibly young pieces that they will nurture for future years when they will be sure to make some noise in the East.

28th: Memphis Grizzlies
LaMelo Ball | Cameron Thomas | Bojan Bogdanovic | Jonathan Kuminga | Robert Williams | 6th: Cedi Osman
Another young side that will hope to upset some more experienced teams on the back of LaMelo Ball’s Rookie of the Year campaign.

27th: Orlando Magic
Lonzo Ball | Derrick White | Kelly Oubre Jr. | Miles Bridges | Anthony Davis | 6th: Malik Beasley
Anthony Davis doesn’t have much help outside of Lonzo Ball as he looks to take the Magic to playoff glory. Watch out for potential 6th Man of the Year candidate Malik Beasley.

26th: Phoenix Suns
Markelle Fultz | James Harden | Mikal Bridges | Kyle Kuzma | James Wiseman | 6th: Andre Iguodala
This is a side caught between the present and the future. They have some exciting pieces however can Harden carry the rest of this team deep or will they blow it up to either hunt for a championship or commit to building around their young stars?

25th: Sacramento Kings
Kyle Lowry | De’Anthony Melton | Jayson Tatum | Jarred Vanderbilt | Bam Adebayo | 6th: Zavier Tillman
The Kings are a club being slept on - the combination of Tatum and Adebayo combined with the defensive prowess of Lowry and Vanderbilt means this time is capable of making some serious noise this season

24th: Atlanta Hawks
Tyrese Haliburton | Jalen Brunson | Nicolas Batum | Grant Williams | Nikola Jokic | 6th: Nemanja Bjelica
Haliburton and Jokic are class players but not too sure they have a strong enough squad to go deep. Again - a side caught between all out contending and a rebuild.

23rd: New York Knicks
Dejounte Murray | R.J. Hampton | Michael Porter Jr. | Herbert Jones | Karl-Anthony Towns | 6th: Derrick Jones Jr.
KAT has returned home! Unfortunately he doesn’t have much help however his combination with Murray will be a nightmare defensively for the rest of the league.

22nd: Oklahoma City Thunder
Trae Young | Jaylen Nowell | Franz Wagner | Scottie Barnes | Mohamed Bamba | 6th: Marvin Bagley
Another exciting young side. Will Trae lead them to the playoffs or will they look to consolidate through the draft for another year before launching an assault onto the rest of the league?

21st: Boston Celtics
Goran Dragic | Devin Booker | Corey Kispert | Jae’Sean Tate | Pascal Siakam | 6th: Amir Coffey
Seriously lacking threats outside of Booker and Siakam however will be tough to beat on their day.

20th: New Orleans Pelicans
De’Aaron Fox | Donte DiVincenzo | Jimmy Butler | Wendell Carter Jr. | Montrezl Harrell | 6th: Dwight Powell
The Pels have a strong core and will be built around the defence of Butler contrasting with the sheer speed of Fox. An exciting side.

19th: Washington Wizards
Stephen Curry | Josh Giddey | Josh Hart | Rui Hachimura | Jonas Valanciunas | 6th: Nerlens Noel
You can never count out Steph! Whilst he doesn’t have much of a supporting cast, he is good enough to make a playoff run, especially whilst mentoring exciting rookie Josh Giddey.

18th: Dallas Mavericks
Marcus Smart | Klay Thompson | Demar Derozan | Jonathan Isaac | Mitchell Robinson | 6th: Cameron Johnson
Mark Cuban will be happy to see Thompson and Derozan linking up together in a team that will be an offensive threat all across the floor.

17th: Detroit Pistons
Jrue Holiday | Jalen Suggs | Ziaire Williams | Kevin Durant | Clint Capela | 6th: Spencer Dinwiddie
KD in the Motor City creates a scary front court with himself and Capela. These guys will be tough to beat when Durant is firing.

16th: Portland Trail Blazers
Jose Alvarado | Jaylen Brown | Anthony Edwards | Chimezie Metu | Myles Turner | 6th: Cole Anthony
This team will either be really good - or really bad. Brown and Edwards form a lethal duo but there exist some sizeable gaps in their roster.

15th: Minnesota Timberwolves
Ben Simmons | Jordan Poole | Lauri Markannen | Draymond Green | Joel Embiid | 6th: Terance Mann
Good luck getting a bucket against these guys! Simmons and Embiid are back together again - this time with some serious help. They have a weak bench but really could be considered contenders.

14th: Utah Jazz
Darius Garland | Tyler Herro | Lu Dort | Paul Millsap | Jusuf Nurkic | 6th: Otto Porter
These guys are a bit weak - an exciting backcourt and a solid role player in Nurkic however lacking the edge to really compete.

13th: Brooklyn Nets
Chris Paul | Terry Rozier III | Khris Middleton | Carmelo Anthony | Daniel Gafford | 6th: Norman Powell
With an ageing squad, the Nets will really look to get stronger so they can make a push at a ring this year. The veteran experience will go along way.

12th: Denver Nuggets
John Wall | Donovan Mitchell | R.J. Barrett | Jerami Grant | Mason Plumlee | 6th: Richuan Holmes
Denver have a pretty legit squad however will need John Wall to step up in a major way. They are limited at the 5 spot and may look to make a move to help out there.

11th: Indiana Pacers
Luka Doncic | Cade Cunningham | Cam Reddish | Keldon Johnson | Steven Adams | 6th: Jaxon Hayes
Luka and Cade together is a nightmare for the rest of the league. The Pacers will be a legit threat from now until at least the next five years.

10th: Chicago Bulls
Fred VanVleet | Zach Lavine | Dillon Brooks | Al Horford | Andre Drummond | 6th: Patrick Beverley
The Bulls are a well balanced side that will have a rising Zach Lavine leading the way for them. Pat Bev’s D off the bench could prove crucial for the Windy City.

9th: Milwaukee Bucks
Damian Lillard | Coby White | Andrew Wiggins | Bobby Portis | Javale McGee | 6th: Josh Green
Milwaukee needs Andrew Wiggins to make a huge step up in order to help Dame and the rest of the crew go far this year. Lillard is renowned for carrying teams but his supporting cast is capable of raising the Bucks to the upper echelon.

8th: Golden State Warriors
Russell Westbrook | Gary Harris | OG Anunoby | Zion Williamson | Kristaps Porzingis | 6th: Hamidou Diallo
The question here is how will Russ fit with Zion? If they can get it together and stay healthy, this team will be nearly impossible to stop with help from the likes of OG and KP.

7th: Los Angeles Lakers
Mike Conley | Victor Oladipo | Paul George | Royce O’Neale | Domanatas Sabonis | 6th: Josh Richardson
The Lakers are old, there’s no two ways about it. They may be another side that finds themselves in championship/rebuild purgatory but at their best they will be a tough match up.

6th: Toronto Raptors
DeVonte Graham | Kyrie Irving | Brandon Ingram | Aaron Gordon | Nikola Vucevic | 6th: P.J. Washington
Canada will have plenty to cheer for when this squad rolls into town. Kyrie Irving is a chance to lead the league scoring wise with this case around him - watch out for how Ingram continues to improve throughout the year.

5th: Philadelphia 76ers
Derrick Rose | Gary Trent Jr. | Matisse Thybulle | Jaren Jackson Jr. | Rudy Gobert | 6th: Tyrese Maxey
A team full of defensive dogs. The 76ers will be a tough match up for all teams however will rely heavily on JJJ and Gary Trent to get the ball in the basket.

4th: Houston Rockets
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander | D’Angelo Russell | Harrison Barnes | Danilo Gallinari | Jarrett Allen | 6th: Jalen Green
Exciting is the best way to describe this squad. They are still young so have plenty of time to build towards a championship, but the people of Houston will be expecting them to compete right away.

3rd: Los Angeles Clippers
Tyus Jones | Malcolm Brogdon | LeBron James | John Collins | Kevin Love | 6th: Seth Curry
The Clippers have a nice squad however a glaring hole at Point Guard could prove to hinder this team’s title run if they don’t make some adjustments.

2nd: Miami Heat
Ja Morant | Gary Payton II | Alec Burks | Tobias Harris | Christian Wood | 6th: Caris Levert
South Beach has a crew that can take down anyone else in the league on any night. If Morant continues to track towards All-NBA level, don’t be surprised to see these guys later on in the playoffs.

1st: San Antonio Spurs
Cory Joseph | Desmond Bane | Danny Green | Giannis Antetokounmpo | Jakob Poeltl | 6th: Brandon Clarke
Any team that features the Greek Freak deserves to sit #1 in the inaugural power rankings. With handy role players around him, Giannis will look to gift San Antonio yet another ring this year.

Game One
Houston Rockets (0-0) @ Golden State Warriors (0-0)
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander | D'Angelo Russell | Harrison Barnes | Danilo Gallinari | Jarrett Allen | 6th: Jalen Green
Russell Westbrook | Gary Harris | OG Anunoby | Rudy Gay | Kristaps Porzingis | 6th: Hamidou Diallo

HOU | 19 | 15 | 24 | 24 | 82
GSW | 17 | 19 | 25 | 28 | 89

- A slow start for both teams led to a dismal offensive output in the first half. The D from both sides proved elite and it became near impossible to score a bucket
- The Warriors went on a huge run to start the third to lead by as much as 14 before the Rockets clawed back to make it a three point game going into the final break.
- Houston was simply unable to create and score baskets, shooting a poor 6/22 from three point land
- Encouragingly for the Rockets, their bench outscore the Warriors 31-20 thanks to contributions from the likes of Grayson Allen and Jalen Green
- Shai and D’Lo couldn't get anything going, shooting 5-14 and 8-23 from the field respectively.

Russell: 17pts, 7ast
J. Allen: 15pts, 19reb, 5ast, 3blk
Gilgeous-Alexander: 11pts, 4reb, 4ast
Green: 11pts

Westbrook: 19pts, 6reb, 6ast
Williamson: 17pts, 11reb
Harris: 13pts, 5 reb, 5ast
Nunn: 12pts
Porzingis: 12pts, 12reb, 3blk

The Rudy Tomjanovich Medal For The Rockets Best and Fairest:
Points will be awarded (3,2,1) for the best performing players in each game.

3 - J. Allen, 2 - Green, 1 - Russell

Game Two
Sacramento Kings (0-0) @ Houston Rockets (0-1)
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander | D'Angelo Russell | Harrison Barnes | Danilo Gallinari | Jarrett Allen | 6th: Jalen Green
Kyle Lowry | De’Anthony Melton | Jayson Tatum | Jarred Vanderbilt | Bam Adebayo | 6th: Xavier Tillman

SAC | 20 | 32 | 18 | 27 | 97
HOU | 18 | 29 | 18 | 18 | 83

- D’Angelo Russell’s (4-18 FG) struggles continued as the Rockets struggled to find any offensive momentum on their way to a 14 point loss.
- The Rockets turned the ball over 11 times, combined with a measly 41% from the field and 3/22 3PT led to a poor loss in their home opener.
- Jarrett Allen was unstoppable as SGA and Jalen Green showed flashes of brilliance but it wasn’t enough to contain Tatum and Lowry.
- Kyle Lowry exploded in the 4th to ensure the Rockets wouldn’t challenge the Kings.

Gilgeous-Alexander: 22pts, 2reb, 2ast
J. Allen: 20pts, 18reb, 5blk
Barnes: 7reb, 3ast

Lowry: 25pts, 5ast, 2stl
Tatum: 16pts, 7reb, 4ast
Vanderbilt:13pts, 8reb

Game Three
Houston Rockets (0-2) @ Atlanta Hawks (2-2)

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander | D'Angelo Russell | Harrison Barnes | Danilo Gallinari | Jarrett Allen | 6th: Jalen Green
Tyrese Haliburton | Jalen Brunson | Malik Monk | Nicolas Batum | Nikola Jokic | 6th: Nemanja Bjelica

HOU | 26 | 25 | 22 | 17 | 90
ATL | 18 | 34 | 19 | 33 | 104

- The Rockets threw away a golden opportunity for their first win as they went cold in the final quarter.
- The Hawks were simply too dominant in the pain as, aside from Jarrett Allen, the Rockets had no match for their bigs down low.
- Houston’s poor shooting from deep continued, managing just 6/24 from beyond the arc
- The bench from Houston were unable to get much going like they did against the Kings; no bench player hit double digits on the night. Jalen Green had his first rough showing, scoring 7 points shooting 3/10 from the field.

Russell: 19pts, 3reb, 7ast
Allen: 17pts, 15reb, 5blk

Jokic: 32pts, 13reb, 8ast
Brunson: 20pts
Haliburton: 11pts, 12ast, 2blk

The Rudy Tomjanovich Medal For The Rockets Best and Fairest:
3 - J. Allen, 2 - Russell, 1 - Gallinari
Game Four
New York Knicks (1-2) @ Houston Rockets (0-3)

Dejounte Murray | R.J. Hampton | Michael Porter Jr. | Herb Jones | Karl-Anthony Towns | 6th: Collin Sexton
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander | D'Angelo Russell | Harrison Barnes | Danilo Gallinari | Jarrett Allen | 6th: Jalen Green

NYN | 27 | 26 | 26 | 22 | 101
HOU | 21 | 24 | 34 | 29 | 108

- The Rockets were finally able to get on the board for 21-22 behind a huge second half performance from D’Angelo Russell. Russell had 26 points in the second half alone with some huge shots down the stretch to lead Houston to their first win.
- Danilo Gallinari continues to improve and was one of the most important players in the win. Unfortunately, the same could not be said for Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who was found missing for most of the game.
- The Knicks hit 7 of just 11 free throws whereas the Rockets made all 20 of their attempts, which proved to be the difference down the stretch.

Russell: 36pts, 6reb, 8ast
Gallinari: 17pts, 11reb
J. Allen: 14pts, 15reb, 4 blk
Achiuwa: 6pts, 8reb

Murray: 27pts, 3reb, 7ast
Sexton: 18pts, 5ast, 2stl
Towns: 17pts, 19reb, 3ast, 2blk

The Rudy Tomjanovich Medal For The Rockets Best and Fairest:
3 - Russell, 2 - Gallinari, 1 - J. Allen

Game Five
Houston Rockets (1-3) @ Utah Jazz (2-2)

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander | D'Angelo Russell | Harrison Barnes | Danilo Gallinari | Jarrett Allen | 6th: Jalen Green
Darius Garland | Tyler Herro | Lu Dort | Otto Porter | Jusuf Nurkic | 6th: Jordan Clarkson

HOU | 22 | 28 | 18 | 32 | 100
UTA | 38 | 47 | 30 | 32 | 147

- The Rockets slumped to their 4th-worst ever loss in franchise history, facing a large deficit in the first quarter that they never recovered from to continue their poor start to their season.
- Utah’s dominance in the paint (68 points in paint, 53 total rebounds) led to a game that the Rockets never looked a chance in. They continue to exceed expectations early in the year.

G. Allen: 21pts, 3ast
Gilgeous-Alexander: 19pts, 4reb, 6ast
Russell: 17pts (8-26FG), 3stl
J. Allen: 15pts, 10reb

Garland: 19pts, 9reb, 3stl
Strus: 23pts, 4reb
Clarkson: 23pts, 5reb, 2ast
Nurkic: 16pts, 12reb, 3ast
Porter: 15pts, 11reb, 4ast
Herro: 10pts, 7ast, 7reb

The Rudy Tomjanovich Medal For The Rockets Best and Fairest:
3 - G. Allen, 2 - J. Allen, 1 - Gilgeous-Alexander

Game Six
Denver Nuggets (1-3) @ Houston Rockets (1-4)

John Wall | Devin Vassell | Caleb Martin | Chris Boucher | Richuan Holmes | 6th: Jerami Grant
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander | D'Angelo Russell | Harrison Barnes | Danilo Gallinari | Jarrett Allen | 6th: Jalen Green

DEN | 27 | 24 | 27 | 13 | 91
HOU | 31 | 27 | 23 | 29 | 110

- What a final quarter from Houston as they pulled it all together to go on a monstrous run to close out the game.
- Donovan Mitchell and R.J. Barrett were both out injured for the Nugs, which meant there was no excuse for a poor showing from Houston.
- Credit must go to Precious Achiuwa and Chris Clemons for leading a strong run with the bench in the 3rd to even the game up after Denver managed to take a lead.

Russell: 19pts, 8reb, 11ast, 1blk
Gilgeous-Alexander: 14pts, 3asr
J. Allen: 13pts, 11reb, 3stl, 4blk
Achiuwa: 7pts, 9reb, 2blk in just 12 mins

Wall: 24pts (11-30FG), 3reb, 2ast
Vassell: 18pts, 3stl
Boucher: 9pts, 10reb

The Rudy Tomjanovich Medal For The Rockets Best and Fairest:
3 - Russell, 2 - J.Allen, 1 - Achiuwa
Game Seven
Detroits Pistons (2-4) @ Houston Rockets (2-4)

Jrue Holiday | Jalen Suggs | Ziaire Williams | Kevin Durant | Clint Capela | 6th: Spencer Dinwiddie
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander | D'Angelo Russell | Harrison Barnes | Danilo Gallinari | Jarrett Allen | 6th: Jalen Green

DET | 18 | 34 | 43 | 41 | 136
HOU | 33 | 31 | 36 | 42 | 142

- This is D’Lo’s team! An explosion from the guard saw him nearly close in on his career high points, leading the Rockets in a high scoring win
- Jarrett Allen continues to be a defensive force but the rest of the team could take some notes from him, allowing 84 second half points
- KD did everything he could, dropping a 50 piece of his own, but lacked the support that Russell had to match it with him

Russell: 46pts, 4reb, 7ast
Gilgeous-Alexander: 17pts, 5reb
Allen: 16pts, 13reb, 8ast, 5blk
Green: 15pts, 5ast, 2stl

Durant: 50pts, 6reb, 4ast, 2blk
Dinwiddie: 21pts, 6reb, 7ast
Holiday: 19pts, 5reb, 6ast, 2stl
Capela: 12pts, 15reb, 2blk
Suggs: 10pts, 9ast

The Rudy Tomjanovich Medal For The Rockets Best and Fairest:
3 - Russell, 2 - Allen, 1 - Gilgeous-Alexander

Game Eight
Houston Rockets (3-4) @ Dallas Mavericks (3-3)
Isaiah Thomas | Klay Thompson | Demar DeRozan | Jonathan Isaac | Mitchell Robinson | 6th: Cameron Johnson
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander | D'Angelo Russell | Harrison Barnes | Danilo Gallinari | Jarrett Allen | 6th: Jalen Green

HOU | 31 | 38 | 23 | 26 | 118
DAL | 33 | 31 | 29 | 33 | 126

- The Mavericks sent Houston crashing back down to Earth with a comprehensive win in Dallas
- Houston turned the ball over 18 times which proved to be their downfall, only managing 3 team steals themselves compared to 11 for the Mavs
- Is Jarrett Allen getting enough touched? He only shot the ball 6 times for 4 makes and when you compare that to relatively inefficient showings from both D’Lo and SGA, you have to wonder if the Rockets have quite worked out how to get the best out of each individual

Gilgeous-Alexander: 28pts, 4ast, 4blk
Russell: 27pts, 5ast
Green: 14pts
Allen: 10pts, 18reb, 5ast, 3blk

Thompson: 25pts
DeRozan: 24pts, 6reb, 11ast
Isaac: 11pts, 12reb, 2stl, 3blk
Robinson: 10pts, 11reb

The Rudy Tomjanovich Medal For The Rockets Best and Fairest:
3 - Allen, 2 - Gilgeous-Alexander, 1 - Russell

Game Nine
Philadelphia 76ers (4-2) @ Houston Rockets (3-5)

Tyrese Maxey | Gary Trent Jr. | Matisse Thybulle | Jaren Jackson Jr. | Rudy Gobert | 6th: Cody Zeller
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander | D'Angelo Russell | Harrison Barnes | Danilo Gallinari | Jarrett Allen | 6th: Jalen Green

PHI | 25 | 32 | 32 | 32 | 121
HOU | 29 | 42 | 28 | 33 | 132

- When the Big Three is firing can the Rockets be stopped? A dominant display on the offensive end from Russell, SGA and Jarrett meant the 76ers just simply could not compete
- The Sixers sorely missed injured Guard Derrick Rose despite Tyrese Maxey’s strong showing
- A second quarter run from Houston put the wheels in motion for this win, as Philly just simply couldn’t claw back through the match

Russell: 29pts, 10ast
Gilgeous-Alexander: 28pts, 5reb, 7ast
Allen: 23pts, 16reb, 4blk

Jackson Jr.: 30pts, 8reb, 2stl
Trent Jr.: 21pts
Maxey: 20pts, 10ast
Harris: 20pts

The Rudy Tomjanovich Medal For The Rockets Best and Fairest:
3 - Gilgeous-Alexander, 2 - Russell, 1 - Allen

The First Third Review
Part 2: A Look At The Future
Brought to you Draft Express

1. Pete Paxson (PF/SF) - Minnesota
23.5ppg, 12.2rpg, 3.5apg, 1.9spg, 4.7bpg

A relative of the famous Paxson NBA family, 19 year old Pete has quickly become the consensus best available player in this year's draft class. Standing at 6'9", Paxson is an explosive scorer from anywhere on the court and a very strong rebounder to boot. As evidence by his ridiculous numbers, Paxson has a knack for steals and is a dominant shot blocker. Pete has been described as having the defensive potential of a Draymond Green with a much better scoring ability, especially from long range. It is hard to see anyone dethroning this prospect from the number one spot, however there are still many months until the NBA Draft.

2. Ervin Moreland (SG/SF) - Seton Hall
29.8ppg, 6.3rpg, 6.1apg, 2.0spg, 1.0bpg

Moreland is a 6'6" slasher coming out of Seton Hall who is making waves thanks to his tireless scoring ability. Whilst he has a lot of work to do defensively, Ervin enters his draft year with comparisons to young star Anthony Edwards. If Moreland can improve his three point shooting, it is easy to envision a world where he is a top five scorer in the league. The athletic 19 year old has limitless potential and can really challenge Pete Paxson to become the first pick in the Draft.

3. Frank Daniels (C) - Pittsburgh
23.2ppg, 7.9rpg, 3.5apg, 0.6spg, 1.4bpg

This 7-footer is straight out of the Karl-Anthony Towns mould - a big man who can knock down a shot from all over. At just 18 years old, Daniels, a prolific scorer and rebounder, has dominated the college scene. What he lacks in athleticism and basketball IQ he more than makes up for with his silky smooth shooting stroke. His play making skills and defense are both considered below average however he has many years to grow into a real contributor for whoever picks him up. A man with All-NBA potential yet may struggle in his early career until he becomes a more refined player.

4. Isaac Evans (SF/PF) - Iowa
24.5ppg, 7.5rpg, 2.8apg, 2.4spg, 2.8bpg

Isaac Evans is a defensive beast. 6'8" tall with a 6'11" wingspan makes him a tough match up for his opponent. Scouts are torn over Evans raw abilities and skills - whilst Draft Express is a big fan of this man, websites such as NBA.com have Evans as their 37th best prospect. At 23 years of age, the question must be asked regarding how much he can grow as a player - and he certainly needs to grow on the offensive end. However, it is easy to see Evans contributing on a contender with his defensive prowess, but if a team does take him with a high pick in the draft they may be taking a major risk.

5. Darrell Rice (C/PF) - UNLV
16.5ppg, 14.3rpg, 3.0apg, 1.0spg, 3.3bpg

Darrell Rice can be the cornerstone of a franchise with his relentless defensive abilities. He does, however, lack polish around the rim and is non-factor beyond the arc. The 6'10" center is a player who would thrive in the 90's, but that doesn't mean he can't contribute in the modern NBA. He is a very solid player with some rough spots. Fortunately at 19, he has plenty of time to develop and is another player that has All-NBA potential. Rice will be able to hold down the paint for any team, and if he can sort out his offensive game, could be one of the league's major stars for years to come.

The First Third Review
Our Final Part
A Look At The Houston Rockets

It has been a tumultuous beginning to the season for Houston, coming out of the blocks with four losses from their first five outings before they began to get it together somewhat. The 47 point thrashing at the hands of the Utah Jazz is firm in the mind of NBA fans as some simply can't believe that the same team were also able to knock off the 76ers just eight days later. You could consider this franchise lucky to be so close to .500 - but that won't get them very far in an extremely stacked Western Conference.

The Rockets certainly need to become more consistent in how the play and that may be achieved through discovering their identity moreso. With two ball-heavy guards and an absolute beast in Jarrett Allen, Houston have looks a million bucks when everyone is on song however when just one of their big three struggles it is game over for the red and white. We will have a look at each individual player - based in order of their ranking in the Rudy Tomjanovich Medal standings.

1. Jarrett Allen (20 points)
15.9ppg, 15rpg, 3apg, 1.1spg, 4.9bpg

Looking at the numbers, it is easy to see why Jarrett Allen has a clear cut lead in the Rockets' Best and Fairest standings. He has consistently tore apart defences with his skill and power scoring around the rim, whilst also becoming the league's premiere shot blocker. Allen provides the heartbeat for this team and is guaranteed to provide a presence irrespective of who the opposition is. The big man is quickly becoming a star in the league, and the hopes of the Rockets rest firmly on his shoulders as they look to improve their standings heading into the middle third of the season.

2. D'Angelo Russell (15 points)
25.1ppg, 3.0rpg, 6.9apg, 0.6spg, 0.2bpg

A rough start to the season for D'Lo has led to him breaking out in the most recent few games. A 46 point outing against the Pistons cemented his status as the offensive leader for the Rockets as the team lives and dies by his shot. It is easy to see the correlation between his quieter nights and the Rockets' lack of success. Put simply, Houston's ceiling relies upon how consistent he can be across the season. He is currently shooting just 27% from deep at this stage due to his horrific shooting start - a number that needs to continue to rise of the Rockets plan to rise too.

3. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (9 points)
18.3ppg, 3.6rpg, 4.0apg, 0.2spg, 0.8bpg

Another member of the squad who took a while to get going, SGA is beginning to make his mark on the team. Back to back games with 28 points most recently have been his biggest outputs offensively after some pretty average shooting nights early in this season. At times the 23 year old can get lost in the shuffle when Russell and Allen are playing a strong pick and roll game, which is perhaps a reason for his lower than expected statistical output. At present, SGA seems content to play third fiddle but the question on the minds of many fans is how long will he be happy doing that? He has the skills and athleticism to be an absolute star yet has not had the chance to shine in Houston so far this year.

T4. Jalen Green (3 points)
11.3ppg, 1.8rpg, 2.4apg, 0.3spg, 0.2bpg

The rook has shown flashes of brilliance, easy navigating his way to the rim on countless occasions. Green is still a work in progress and as such has had some off nights but overall looks like a solid prospect going forward. Jalen is yet to be tested going head-to-head against a bonafide star however has provided a spark off the bench many different times. His growth will be a major point of interest for fans throughout this year.

T4. Danilo Gallinari (3 points)
8.3ppg, 4.0rpg, 1.0apg, 0.4spg, 0.2bpg

Gallinari is playing his role nicely - a knockdown shooter who can provide serviceable defence. The level of his role has varied throughout the season so far, yet Danilo has shown that he can rise to the occasion when necessary. If the Rockets are to make a playoff run, expect Gallinari to be the quiet achiever helping them succeed.

T4. Grayson Allen (3 points)
7.9ppg, 2.1rpg, 1.2apg, 0.1spg. 0bpg

Allen has been able to hit the three ball when required and has been decent off the bench for the Rockets. At times he has seemed one-dimensional in his play however in games such as his 21 point explosion against the Jazz he has demonstrated an ability to be the lead scorer if required. Houston will be hoping that Allen can play a Kyle Korver-esque roll if they move forwards into playoff territory.

7. Precious Achiuwa (1 point)
5.8ppg, 6.6rpg, 0.7apg, 0.3spg, 0.2bpg

The Sophomore has been great off the bench relieving Jarrett, providing the ability to score easy buckets in the paint as well as control the glass when required. Hopefully he can have a bigger roll throughout the season as he has shown glimpses of how good he really is.

Yet To Poll:

Harrison Barnes - 5.9ppg, 4.4rpg, 1.1apg
John Konchar - 4.8ppg, 3.9rpg, 1.2apg
Chris Clemons - 3.3ppg, 1.8apg
Dylan Windler - 0.7ppg
Charles Bassey - 0.5ppg
Greg Brown - yet to play
Duane Washington Jr. - yet to play

Game Ten
Toronto Raptors (3-3) @ Houston Rockets (4-5)

DeVonte Graham | Kyrie Irving | Brandon Ingram | Aaron Gordon | Nikola Vucevic | 6th: Dario Saric
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander | D'Angelo Russell | Harrison Barnes | Danilo Gallinari | Jarrett Allen | 6th: Jalen Green

TOR | 20 | 27 | 27 | 29 | 103
HOU | 26 | 26 | 27 | 31 | 110

- A well rounded team performance saw Houston take down the Raptors in a hotly contested contest
- It was the Russell v Irving show for most of the game with both guards evenly matched statistically, D’Lo will take a points decision thanks to the outcome of the game
- A lot of Houston’s role players stood up - Barnes and Clemons in particular - to get the Rockets over the line

Russell: 30pts, 4ast, 2blk
J. Allen: 18pts, 12reb, 3blk
Gallinari: 13pts
Green: 13pts, 4reb, 3ast
Gilgeous-Alexander: 10pts, 4reb, 9ast
Barnes: 10pts, 4reb, 5ast

Irving: 29pts
Ingram: 23pts, 8reb
Vucevic: 12pts, 9reb, 2ast
Gordon: 10pts, 7reb

The Rudy Tomjanovich Medal For The Rockets Best and Fairest:
3 - Russell, 2 - J. Allen, 1 - Barnes

Game Eleven
Charlotte Hornets (3-6) @ Houston Rockets (5-5)

Anfernee Simons | Keon Johnson | Saddiq Bey | Evan Mobley | DeAndre Ayton | 6th: Dewayne Dedmon
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander | D'Angelo Russell | Harrison Barnes | Danilo Gallinari | Jarrett Allen | 6th: Jalen Green

CHA | 28 | 21 | 40 | 19 | 108
HOU | 22 | 36 | 34 | 28 | 120

- Despite allowing 40 third quarter points, Houston cruised above .500 for the first time this season as the Hornets young stars struggled to get going
- Evan Mobley failed to score a single point, combined with Saddiq Bey going 4-13 from the floor, meaning that Charlotte had no answer for the offensive firepower of the Rockets
- The loss for Charlotte comes just days after star big man DeAndre Ayton declared he will not be resigning this summer, leading to speculation he will be moved before the deadline
- Houston amassed 28 assists on the night, highlighting their growth as an offensive unit
- Jalen Green showed up tonight, scoring a career high against fellow lottery pick Mobley in a match where Jarrett Allen fell just one assist shy of a triple double

Russell: 26pts, 6ast
Gilgeous-Alexander: 19pts, 4reb, 4ast, 2stl, 2blk
Green: 19pts
Barnes: 12pts, 10reb
J. Allen: 11pts, 16reb, 9ast, 3blk

Ayton: 29pts, 20reb, 2blk
Shroder: 17pts
Dedmon: 12pts, 11reb

The Rudy Tomjanovich Medal For The Rockets Best and Fairest:

3 - Gilgeous-Alexander, 2 - J. Allen, 1 - Barnes

Game Twelve
Houston Rockets (6-5) @ Cleveland Cavaliers (3-6)

Kemba Walker | C.J. McCollum | Kawhi Leonard | Julius Randle | Onyeka Okungwu | 6th: Ayo Dosunmu

- The Cavs have struggled all year to get it together despite being strong on paper. Tonight they were simply no match for an explosion from SGA
- Houston started roughly however got it together in the second quarter. The Rockets may feel as though they are too susceptible to give up 40 point quarters however when they are scoring like they are currently what does it matter?
- Rookies Ayo Dosunmu and Jalen Green squared off against each other both scoring 18 points each. This match up had fans licking their lips at what the future holds for these two
- The Rockets 4th win in a row propels them into the 5th seed in the West as they continue their strong push in the second trimester of the season

Gilgeous-Alexander: 42pts, 11reb, 4stl, 2blk
Russell: 23pts, 10ast, 3stl, 2blk
G. Allen: 21pts
J. Allen: 16pts, 15reb
Green: 18pts, 3reb

The Scouting Report
Rounding Out DraftExpress.com's Top Ten

6. Andrew Newton (PF/SF) - Northwestern
22 years old - 6'9" - 253lbs
19.1ppg, 6.5rpg, 5apg, 1spg, 1.1bpg

Newton is a scorer with a lot of questions regarding his defensive abilities. Whilst he is putting up some very solid numbers in college, there is talk among scouts that he has already reached his ceiling. A knockdown three point shooter, the man nicknamed Newt will provide a spark for most NBA teams immediately. However, he appears to be slightly one dimensional and perhaps lacks the rebounding and defensive abilities needed to play the 4. NBA coaches will probably look to utilise him as a scoring wing who has the athletic ability to dazzle crowds, yet it is hard to see him becoming a bonafide star in the league.

7. Wilfred Stuart (SG/SF) - England
21 years old - 6'6" - 225lbs
27.8ppg, 5.3rpg, 5.4apg, 1.6spg, 1bpg

England's next star Wilfred Stuart has declared for the NBA draft however fans will have to wait another season to see him in actions as he finishes his contractual obligations back home. Wilfred, or "Willie" is averaging huge numbers playing in England's NBL and is by far the most dominant force across the pond. Both 2k and NBA.com predict this man could be the number one pick, however we're a bit cooler on him as a prospect. He will certainly be able to create for himself from anywhere on the court however is yet to prove himself against stronger opposition. He has room to grow defensively but is a natural athlete who has limitless potential. Stuart could find himself drafted anywhere from 1-10 in the upcoming draft, but we think it will be higher than lower.

8. Angelo De Luca (PF/SF) - Italy
21 years old - 6'8" - 231lbs
27.6ppg, 7.9rpg. 3.1apg, 1spg, 1.3bpg

Our next draft and stash hails from Rome and is another intriguing prospect that has scouts split over where he could end up being drafted. De Luca continues the theme present in this draft - good offensive players with pretty raw defensive skills. Angelo is undersized at the 4 and probably lacks the athleticism to compete against most small forwards in the league. In saying that, he is a good rebounder at both ends of the court and is dynamite shooting the ball, especially from mid range. De Luca may slip down some draft boards over the coming months however he could still see himself taken early in the lottery. It is hard to see De Luca develop into an All-NBA talent but he could certainly be the first or second option on a decent team if he fulfils his potential.

9. Denilson Andrade (SF/PF) - Brazil
19 years old - 6'8" - 203lbs
18.5ppg, 7.4rpg, 2.8apg, 2.4spg, 2.4bpg

The international flavour continues with Denilson Andrade coming out of Brazil. Andrade is more well-rounded than the aforementioned internationals mentioned earlier but is ready to compete in the NBA straight away. Despite the buzz surrounding the issues with his foot injury, Andrade presents as a high potential slasher with insane leaping and dunking abilities. Furthermore, he has exhibited an ability to defend both in and out of the post. He is extremely raw, but at 19 could become a project for a team with the patience to develop him further.

10. Keon Mayo (C) - Toledo
23 years old - 7'3" - 269lbs
14.2ppg, 14.1rpg, 2.8apg, 1spg, 3.2spg

Rising up the ranks is Keon Mayo, a HUGE man who was initially predicted to drop outside the lottery - scouts now think he could be drafted within the top three! An excellent rebounder and shot blocker, Mayo will hold down the paint immediately for whichever team takes him. With a surprisingly good mid-range shot, Mayo will also be effective with the ball in hand. He has the tools to develop his three-ball into a more consistent option however still needs to show improvement there. For a player who was once tipped to never make it to the league, the ability he has shown in his Senior college season has led many to believe that he could be a legit star in the NBA. If you're a GM who loves a big, big man then Mayo is your call any day of the week.

Game Thirteen
Milwaukee Bucks (3-7) @ Houston Rockets (7-5)

Damian Lillard | Josh Christopher | Andrew Wiggins | Lamar Stevens | Bobby Portis Jr. | 6th: Javale McGee
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander | D'Angelo Russell | Harrison Barnes | Danilo Gallinari | Jarrett Allen | 6th: Jalen Green

MIL | 27 | 35 | 36 | 36 | 134
HOU | 14 | 24 | 34 | 32 | 104

- An insipid performance by the Rockets sees their winning streak end as they simply couldn’t get the ball in the hole throughout the first half and then couldn’t slow down the Bucks on offense
- This Bucks team is legit with Damian Lillard at the helm. Defense from role players such as Josh Green and Javale McGee ensured the Rockets never had a sniff in this one
- An ugly night for D’Angelo Russell shooting just 3-18 from the field (0-5 from 3). Nights like these exemplify why the Rockets need to become a more consistent team
- The Bucks were dominant on the boards, winning this battle 68-41 thanks to contributions from the likes of Bobby Portis Jr who has 19 rebounds on his own

Gilgeous-Alexander: 20pts, 3reb, 6ast
Gallinari: 19pts
J. Allen: 14pts, 11reb, 2blk
Russell: 12pts, 5reb, 11ast

Lillard: 37pts, 9reb, 9ast
White: 23pts, 4ast
Christopher: 20pts, 3reb, 3ast
McGee: 14pts, 13reb, 4ast, 4blk
Portis Jr: 9pts, 19reb

The Rudy Tomjanovich Medal For The Rockets Best and Fairest:
3 - J. Allen, 2 - Gilgeous-Alexander, 1 - Gallinari

Game Fourteen
Houston Rockets (7-6) @ Los Angeles Lakers (7-4)

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander | D'Angelo Russell | Harrison Barnes | Danilo Gallinari | Jarrett Allen | 6th: Jalen Green
Mike Conley | Josh Richardson | Paul George | Royce O’Neale | Domantas Sabonis | 6th: Victor Oladipo

HOU | 26 | 29 | 17 | 39 | 111
LAL | 27 | 32 | 20 | 47 | 126

- Houston will be cursing their inability to capitalise on their chances to defeat a very strong Lakers side. The Lakers defence was simply too strong as they dominated both turnovers and rebounds
- The Rockets need more production from their role players as quite simply they don’t have enough backup. They will be buoyed by a productive Chris Clemons cameo, who had 8pts and 5ast with a steal in his 8 minutes
- Paul George is back to his best, controlling from the outset. The Lakers have been red hot all year and it is easy to see why

Gilgeous-Alexander: 31pts, 5ast
Russell: 25pts, 8ast

George: 31pts, 6reb, 3ast
Conley: 20pts, 7ast
Sabonis: 18pts, 15reb, 9ast
Oladipo: 15pts, 6reb

The Rudy Tomjanovich Medal For The Rockets Best and Fairest:
3: Gilgeous-Alexander, 2 - Russell, 1 - Clemons

Bleacher Report: All The Fallout From MASSIVE Hornets/Spurs Trade + Rockets Moving The Italian Stallion? + More
Ayton moves to a contender as Hornets announce rebuild

Monster Trade Kicks Off The New Year

Deandre Ayton made it very clear that he wanted out of Charlotte to move to a contender - and he got his wish. Ayton joins Jamal Murray and Giannis Antetokounmpo to form what is probably the scariest Big 3 since the Heatles were formed.

To get the big man there, the Spurs sent unhappy guard Desmond Bane and a washed Gordon Hayward with two unprotected firsts, allegedly for this year and 2024, as reported by Sam Amick. Desmond Bane joins Evan Mobley to form a young core in Charlotte for a team that is currently 14th in the East. In a strange case of symmetry, San Antonio are also languishing in 14th over in the West. This move propels the Spurs on paper into the playoffs and will be a tough match for whoever comes across them in the first round, if they make it.

There already appears to be rumours about the Hornets moving away from Gordon Hayward to a contender immediately however with $25 million in cap space to work with this summer there seems to be no rush. This is a deal which both teams should benefit from, the selling Hornets picking up valuable assets in Bane and two picks and the Spurs picking up a legit young star in Ayton. Ayton has claimed that he will resign with the Spurs this summer if possible and as such, you've got to be scared if you're coming up against them any time soon.

San Antonio Spurs Trade Grade: A+
Projected Line-up:
Jamal Murray | Will Barton | Danny Green | Giannis Antetokounmpo | Deandre Ayton | 6th: Jakob Poeltl

Charlotte Hornets Trade Grade: A
Projected Line-up:
Anfernee Simons | Desmond Bane | Gordon Hayward | Evan Mobley | Dewayne Dedmond | 6th: Saddiq Bey

Rockets To Move On From Dani?

Some rumours coming out of Houston say that starting PF Danilo Gallinari could be finding his way out of the door sooner rather than later. The 33 year old veteran has two years remaining on his deal with the Rockets but has not been able to be a consistent contributor.

Throughout the season Gallinari is averaging 9.3ppg with just 3.7 boards a night to go with that, and the Rockets are allegedly seeking to find a player more capable defensively with stronger rebounding skills. Rumours across the league say that if Houston wants to find a player like that, they will have to add on a few more pieces than just Gallinari in order to do so. Players such as Grayson Allen and John Konchar are said to be expendable as they look to find their answer at the 4 going forward.

MVP Race Heating Up

As we approach the mid-point of season 21-22, let's have a quick look at the frontrunners for the MVP Award - and one of our candidates will shock you!

1. Stephen Curry (WAS) - 37.7ppg, 4.3rpg, 6.2apg, 1.7spg
2. LeBron James (LAC) - 32.2ppg, 6.9rpg, 7.4apg, 2spg, 1bpg
3. Joel Embiid (MIN) - 26.4ppg, 14.5rpg, 5.1apg, 1.3spg, 2.1bpg
4. LaMelo Ball (MEM) - 26.1ppg, 7.7rpg, 9.1apg, 3.1spg, 0.2bpg
5. Luka Doncic (IND) - 30.3ppg, 9.8rpg, 8.1apg, 1.2spg, 0.5bpg

Game Fifteen
Brooklyn Nets (3-7) @ Houston Rockets (7-7)

Chris Paul | Terry Rozier III | Khris Middleton | Carmelo Anthony | Daniel Gafford | 6th: Norman Powell
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander | D'Angelo Russell | Harrison Barnes | Precious Achiuwa | Jarrett Allen | 6th: Jalen Green

BKN | 28 | 40 | 28 | 24 | 120
HOU | 23 | 30 | 31 | 26 | 110

- Despite missing key role player Patty Mills, the Nets were simply too good in Houston
- Chris Paul’s fingerprints were all over this one, leading the second quarter charge that the Rockets were never able to recover from. Combined with Terry Rozier and Khris Middleton, the Nets had too much offensive firepower with a rough defensive edge that led them to the dub.
- Precious Achiuwa received his first start at the 4 with Danilo dropped to the bench and exceeded all expectations. Achiuwa is expected to remain in the starting lineup going forward after he helped Jarrett Allen reach a monster double double tonight.
- Despite the loss, Jalen Green posted a career high 27 points in the outing on a night where SGA struggled

Green: 27pts, 4reb, 4ast, 1stl
Russell: 20pts, 3reb, 4ast
J. Allen: 17pts, 22reb, 3ast, 4blk
Achiuwa: 15pts, 11reb

Paul: 25pts, 5reb, 3stl
Rozier: 22pts, 5reb, 3ast, 2stl
Middleton: 21pts, 4ast, 3stl
Powell: 18pts, 6ast
Gafford: 12pts, 10reb, 4blk

The Rudy Tomjanovich Medal For The Rockets Best and Fairest:
3 - Green, 2 - J. Allen, 1 - Russell

Game Sixteen
Houston Rockets (7-8) @ Orlando Magic (7-8)

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander | D'Angelo Russell | Harrison Barnes | Precious Achiuwa | Jarrett Allen | 6th: Jalen Green
Eric Bledsoe | Derrick White | Kelly Oubre Jr | Miles Bridges | Anthony Davis | 6th: Malik Beasley

HOU | 21 | 23 | 24 | 25 | 93
ORL | 30 | 19 | 24 | 26 | 99

- A see-sawing contest which saw the Orlando Magic take the chocolates after an enthralling finish led by a massive performance from star Anthony Davis
- The Rockets were able to claw back from a 13 point deficit however couldn’t hang on late in the game to see their losing streak hit three games
- Shai Gilgeous-Alexander went missing tonight, shooting just 3-11 in a match where he could’ve easily taken control
- Precious Achiuwa’s addition to the starting lineup again proved beneficial as the big man dropped a double double including a career high 22 rebounds

Russell: 30pts, 5ast
J. Allen: 18pts, 10reb, 3blk
Achiuwa: 11pts, 22reb, 3ast, 2blk

Davis: 24pts, 16reb, 2stl, 2blk
White: 18pts, 5reb, 5ast

Game Seventeen
Houston Rockets (7-9) @ New Orleans Pelicans (10-6)

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander | D'Angelo Russell | Harrison Barnes | Precious Achiuwa | Jarrett Allen | 6th: Jalen Green
De’Aaron Fox | Donte DiVincenzo | Jimmy Butler | Wendell Carter Jr | Montrezl Harrell | 6th: Dwight Powell

HOU | 36 | 32 | 28 | 24 | 120
NOP | 25 | 23 | 33 | 36 | 117

- The Houston Rockets narrowly avoided a complete capitulation as they tried their best to blow a 20 point lead against the Pels
- It was the D’Lo vs De’Aaron show as both guards exploded for 40 bombs in an entertaining contest. Russell was able to knock down a pair of clutch free throws to ensure he won the shootout, and the game
- This breaks a losing skid for the Rockets however they are yet to show they are truly capable of competing with the best teams in the league. They have seven games remaining until the trade deadline and it will be interesting to see if they make any moves to bolster their roster before then

Game Eighteen
Houston Rockets (8-9) @ Miami Heat (7-8)

HOU | 28 |25 | 27 | 30 | 110
MIA | 26 | 18 | 18 | 34 | 96

- The Rockets were firing on all cylinders as they cruised to a win against an underperforming Heat side. When Jarrett Allen, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and D’Angelo Russell are all dominant like they were tonight, Houston are a near impossible side to beat.
- Allen (6) and Achiuwa (3) continued to prove themselves to be perhaps the best shot blocking front court in the NBA
- Harrison Barnes, Grayson Allen and John Konchar continued to prove ineffective for the Rockets, who have some very tough decisions to make before the trade dealing as they look to bolster their role players

J. Allen: 24pts, 14reb, 2stl, 6blk
Gilgeous-Alexander: 23pts, 5reb, 9ast

Game Nineteen

HOU | 30 | 28 | 24 | 32 | 114
BOS | 29 | 26 | 33 | 29 | 117

- How do you stop Devin Booker? The Celtics star dropped 51 - including the game winning three
- Inefficient nights for SGA and D’Lo meant the Rockets dropped a match that they realistically should have stormed home in comfortably.
- Stronger production off the bench meant the Rockets relied less on their starters but we are still yet to see a night where everyone in Clutch City is firing together.
- Houston have five more tough games before the all-star break and need to win as many as possible if they are serious about playoff basketball this year

Gilgeous-Alexander: 24pts, 8ast
J. Allen: 18pts, 17reb
Achiuwa: 16pts, 10reb, 3blk

HOU | 26 | 24 | 12 | 32 | 94
MIN | 22 | 28 | 33 | 25 | 108

- The Timberwolves were easily the toughest matchup the Rockets have faced this year. Despite keeping it close at half time, the defensive prowess of the Wolves was on show in the third that set up an easy win for Minnesota.
- If the Rockets can make the playoffs, the T’Wolves are easily number one on the list of teams you don’t want to come up against.
- Houston now stumble to 9-11 on the season and need to make a run through their last nine games if they want to be in the action come playoff time.

Russell: 22pts
Barnes: 18pts, 3reb
Green: 14pts, 4ast
J. Allen: 12pts, 15reb, 6ast, 3blk

Game Twenty One
Chicago Bulls (14-2) @ Houston Rockets (9-11)

CHI | 23 | 31 | 20 | 25 | 99
HOU | 21 | 28 | 33 | 24 | 106

- The Bulls were handed just the third loss of the season as D’Angelo Russell led the Rockets to an upset. A huge third quarter run was the difference between the two sides despite a late Chicago comeback in the last
- Jalen Green starred with 14 points in the third quarter to set up the dub for Houston
- Another quiet night for Shai who is expected to explode for a huge night any minute now after a lean run of form

Russell: 44pts, 3ast
Green: 18pts, 5ast
Achiuwa: 6pts, 14reb, 5ast, 2blk
J. Allen: 6pts, 11reb, 6blk

VanVleet: 20pts, 4ast

Game Twenty Two
Houston Rockets (10-11) @ Indiana Pacers (5-10)

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander | D'Angelo Russell | Harrison Barnes | Precious Achiuwa | Jarrett Allen | 6th: Jalen Green
Luka Doncic | Cade Cunningham | Timothé Luwawu-Cabarrot | Keldon Johnson | Steven Adams | 6th: Jaxson Hayes

HOU | 18 | 29 | 19 | 34 | 100
IND | 28 | 26 | 25 | 34 | 113

- The Rockets’ playoff aspirations took another hit today as a poor offensive showing led to a tough loss in Indiana as the dynamic duo of Luka and Cade starred.
- Foul trouble for SGA set the tone for a rough night for Houston as they continue to struggle finding production from their role players. Grayson Allen shot 1-11 from the field as he saw an uptick in minutes

Russell: 26pts, 5reb, 5ast
J. Allen: 24pts, 11reb, 3stl, 5blk

Doncic: 40pts, 16reb, 7ast
Cunningham: 27pts, 6reb, 2blk
Adams: 16reb

The Rudy Tomjanovich Medal For The Rockets Best and Fairest:
3 - J. Allen, 2 - Russell, 1 - Green

Game Twenty Three
Portland Trail Blazers (9-13) @ Houston Rockets (10-12)

Cole Anthony | Jaylen Brown | Anthony Edwards | Chimezie Metu | Myles Turner | 6th: Evan Fournier
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander | D'Angelo Russell | Harrison Barnes | Precious Achiuwa | Jarrett Allen | 6th: Jalen Green

POR | 20 | 34 | 36 | 32 | 32 | 122
HOU | 22 | 17 | 31 | 34 | 104

- Despite a monster night from Jarrett Allen, the Rockets made their journey to the playoffs even more unlikely as they were monstered by a young and hungry Portland side
- Houston’s guards went missing as no one could help their star big man, culminating in a 17 point second quarter that they could never recover from.
- With just one game left until the All-Star Break, what will the Rockets do? Is it time to push for a playoff berth or put their stars on ice and run it back next year?

J. Allen: 21pts, 17reb, 3ast, 1stl, 4blk

Game Twenty Four

WAS | 40 | 37 | 44 | 26 | 147
HOU | 33 | 36 | 53 | 35 | 157

- Defence was not the order of the day as Houston sent a statement to the rest of the league that they are not ready to give up on their playoff dreams.
- This momentum raising win leaves the Rockets a game and a half out of the 8 seed however they are a still behind the 10th placed (and rising) Spurs vying to gain a play-in opportunity
- What a way for SGA to silence his doubters as he showed up Steph Curry on his way to the dub.

What a lineup we have in Cleveland for the dunk contest this year! Two former first overall picks and two second overall picks square off against each other with bragging rights on the line for the four dunk contest debutants.

Leading the charge is Golden State star Zion Williamson. This man needs to introduction - the big man is finally healthy and is tearing the league apart at the rim. He is Vegas' favourite heading into the weekend as he looks to jam home some powerful slams with his out of this world strength. Zion also holds an advantage as the tallest player in the contest this year.

Next up we have 2020 #1 pick Anthony Edwards. The sophomore is playing a starring role in Portland this year and is renowned for putting his opposition on a poster and will be sure to woo the crowds in Cleveland.

Finishing off the participants are former #2 picks Ja Morant and Jalen Green. Both men say they have been working on something special as the underdogs look to take down the favoured Williamson and Edwards. Rookie Jalen Green is said to be ecstatic to be selected and is ready to put on a show.

Rockets Report - Trade Deadline Edition
Houston Make Some Bold Moves As They Push For The Playoffs

Russell Re-ups For Three Years

The first order of business for the Houston Rockets heading into the All-Star break was locking in star combo guard D'Angelo Russell. Russell has been one of the biggest contributors in Clutch City this year, averaging a career-high 24.9ppg to go along with 6.4 assists per contest.

D'Lo had a rough start to the season however has settled down into an offensive beast, hitting over 40 points several times throughout the season. It was, in fact, Russell's agency who approached the Rocket's brass ready to take a pay cut to stay with the team. Russell was quoted as saying, "I love what we're building here. We got some young pieces and we're gonna go far. I'm willing to do whatever it takes to make some headlines with this organisation".

Russell was locked in for $71.28M over the next three years.

Bye-Bye Barnes - Harrison Goes Just Before The Deadline

The production from Harrison Barnes was not seen as anywhere near the level needed of him. As such, Houston have been toying with the idea of shipping him out for months, finally pulling the trigger the day before the trade deadline. Barnes, along with underperforming wing John Konchar, was sent to high-flying Philadelphia (13-9, 3rd in East) for the return of Joe Harris and Dorian Finney-Smith.

The 76ers receive a player who will slot straight into their starting five in Barnes, where he teams up with All-Star Rudy Gobert as they head towards the playoffs. Philly's management will be hoping that both Barnes and Konchar are able to improve their play in a new setting as they couldn't get it together during their time with the Rockets. This is a low-risk trade for the 76ers, as both Harris and Finney-Smith were starved of minutes already.

For the Rockets, they needed to move for a reliable knock-down shooter and have down so in finding Joe Harris. The firepower Houston possesses saw Barnes often left wide open behind the arc but unable to convert, which they will hope Harris can provide for them. Furthermore, the acquisition of Dorian Finney-Smith bolsters their wing/frontcourt depth as the strong defender joins an already defensively strong side. Finney-Smith is expected to split time between the 3 and the 4 in Houston. The Rockets needed change, and this trade provides them with the chance to move forward as they make their run towards the playoffs.

The final deal was as follows:
Rockets trade: Harrison Barnes, John Konchar
76ers trade: Joe Harris, Dorian Finney-Smith

11th Hour Deal Sees Sixers and Rockets Swap Again

Just before the clock ticked over to midnight, Houston and Philadelphia were involved in one final deal which sees Grayson Allen headed to Liberty City.

In return, the Rockets will acquire defensive stud Matisse Thybulle. Houston also sent a future second round pick Philadelphia's way.

This trade sees Houston shed another role player who was unable to find any form for them and receive a player of a different skill set. As the Rockets already see themselves as an offensive powerhouse, adding an excellent defended such as Thybulle will see their side become even more well-rounded.

Projected Lineups:
Houston: Shai Gilgeous-Alexander | D'Angelo Russell | Joe Harris | Precious Achiuwa | Jarrett Allen | 6th: Jalen Green/Matisse Thybulle
Philadelphia: Tyrese Maxey | Gary Trent Jr. | Harrison Barnes | Jaren Jackson Jr. | Rudy Gobert | 6th: Derrick Rose

Rockets Report - Player Ratings At The Break
A look at our stars as we enter the home stretch

Sitting with an 11-13 record, things aren't looking great for the Houston Rocket's playoff chances this year. However, they have shown flashes of potential to be one of the Western Conference's most dominant sides and with a young core will certainly be a relevant side for years to come. Their inconsistent play has cost them many a game, which is something that will hopefully be rectified in future years. Losing 4 of their last 6 games before the All-Star break has seen their chances of making an appearance in the playoffs diminish, however the Rockets will remain competitive throughout the rest of the season.

Due to the quirks of the 29 game season, the Rockets will play just five games after the All-Star break. These include matchups against the Spurs side fuelled by Giannis and DeAndre Ayton as well as taking on LeBron James and his LA Clippers in the last game of the season. They will also take on young upstarts Phoenix, Memphis and OKC - three teams who can't be taken lightly and will provide a real threat to the up and down Houston roster. The Rockets will be hoping that their moves at the deadline will catapult them to a winning streak to end the year - one that is much needed if they want to make the playoffs.

Without further adieu, let's have a look how each individual Rocket has performed so far this season:

1 - Jarrett Allen
16.1ppg, 14.3rpg, 2.8apg, 1.1spg, 3.5bpg

It is without a doubt that Jarrett Allen is by far Houston's best player this year. The leading DPOY candidate has had some huge nights, including a 21 point, 27 rebound game against Portland. Snubbed for the All-Star rosters this year, Allen has proved constantly that he needs to be in the conversation for the league's best big men. On top of his impressive stats, he is shooting 64% from the field so far this year and is nigh on impossible to stop. There have been instances where he has been shut down on the offensive end, however his defensive output has rarely been stifled. Jarrett fits well with this roster and is proving constantly why the Rockets need to build around him for the next decade. A+

2 - D'Angelo Russell
25.2ppg, 2.8rpg, 6.4apg, 0.6spg, 0.4bpg

Recently re-signed Russell has exploded this year being the focal point of the Houston offense. D'Lo has scored some huge bags of points whilst also being a key distributor for the side. He has had some horrid shooting nights throughout the year however is reliable to score some easy buckets every night. His pick and roll combo with Jarrett Allen is nearly unstoppable once they both get going and his ability to light it up from long range is unmatched. Whilst a streaky shooter, the Rockets look to him when they need a bucket in a big way and more often than not, he can provide it. A

3 - Shai Gilgeous-Alexander
19.4ppg, 3.6rpg, 5.8apg, 0.7spg, 0.8bpg

It has been a strange year for SGA. His stats have taken a hit from last season and at times he has looked like the odd man out in the core of young stars in Houston. But on his night, he is simply electric. Shai probably needs to hit the three more consistently if he wants to be a bonafide star in the league however his other skills back this deficiency up pretty well. At just 23 years old, Shai has room to grow into a genuine monster and will look to show some of that potential in the run home towards the playoffs. His rating is knocked down at this stage as whilst he has been good, we just want a bit more. B-

4 - Jalen Green
12.8ppg, 2.4rpg, 2.6apg, 0.5spg, 0.3bpg

Although he was completely snubbed from the Rising Stars game, Jalen Green has shown that he can hang with the big boys in the NBA. The rookie has dropped some explosive dunks and made some huge bombs from deep, exciting fans as to what he can develop into. Whilst he has had some growing pains, he has played his 6th Man role expertly and provided instant energy off the bench of the Rockets. The 20 year old is already looking like a future star, but just how long will it take until he becomes one. B+

5 - Precious Achiuwa
7ppg, 8.2rpg, 1.1spg, 0.4spg, 1bpg

The masterstroke of moving Sophomore Achiuwa into the starting lineup has paid dividends as he has exploded into one of most exciting prospects in the league. Precious possesses strong rebounding and blocking skills, making his front-court partnership with Jarrett Allen perhaps the most intimidating in the league. Achiuwa has bettered all expectations and the Rockets will surely take up his team option this offseason to keep him around. B+

6 - Danilo Gallinari
7.6ppg, 3.4rpg, 1apg, 0.5spg, 0.2bpg

It has been a rough year for the Italian Stallion, featuring in trade rumours for almost the whole season thus far. The Rockets stuck with their man, as his production off the bench has been somewhat reasonable. He can score some points and crash the boards when need be but really, he isn't a key cog in the wheel for Houston. He also is on one of the worst contracts in the NBA, and is set to earn over 20 million next year. D

7 - Chris Clemons
4.1ppg, 1rpg, 1.5apg, 0.3spg, 0.1bpg

Clemons has an explosive pace that has seen him become a favourite of the Houston coaching staff, playing minutes relieving SGA in the back court. He is good for an offensive spark off the bench, able to take it to the cup or hit the three. The undersized guard can find it tough defending bigger opponents but has a lot of heart and will try his best regardless. C

Unrated - Greg Brown, Charles Bassey, Dylan Windler, Duane Washington Jr.

These four are yet to really see any meaningful minutes so far this season. Aside from Dylan Windler once hitting 13 points in garbage time, these four have barely made an impact. On the upside, they are all young prospects who may play a role as this team develops throughout the years. Greg Brown in particular is liked by the staff in Houston and may look to take on a bigger role next year.

Yet To Play - Joe Harris, Dorian Finney-Smith, Matisse Thybulle

The three former Philadelphia 76ers are yet to don the red, white and black of Houston however have fans excited. Hopefully these new recruits are capable of boosting the Rockets to the promised land and make an impact when it comes to the playoffs. Harris is expected to start at the three whilst Thybulle and Finney-Smith are confirmed to be rotational players, the amount of minutes they'll receive each night is unknown.

All-Star Recap + How The League Is Looking
As we enter the end of the regular season, how is your team shaping up?

DAME LEADS TEAM LEBRON TO ALL-STAR DUB; RISING STARS BLOWOUT

Damian Lillard dropped 22 points as Team LeBron cruised to an easy win against Steph Curry's lineup. A game filled with swift dunks and deep threes saw every player drop at least one bucket. Aside from Lillard's MVP performance, other stand outs for Team LeBron included Anthony Davis (18pts), Ja Morant (17pts, 4ast), Giannis Antetokounmpo (10pts, 10reb) and LeBron himself, who had 13 points with 12 dimes. Steph Curry (13pts, 11ast) led his team with the assistance of Devin Booker (17pts), Nikola Jokic (16pts, 5reb, 6ast) and Joel Embiid (13pts, 9reb, 4ast).

Moving over to the Rising Stars Challenge, Anthony Edwards picked up MVP honours as he dropped 20 points with 5 board, 3 assists and a massive 6 steals to go along with it. Tyrese Maxey, LaMelo Ball and James Wiseman all also had notable evenings in the showcase. Notably both Cade Cunningham and Killian Hayes struggled to get it going. Houston's own Precious Achiuwa had a reasonable 6 points and 5 rebounds in a losing effort.

Wrapping up the festivities, dunk contest favourite Zion Williamson proved to good against his smaller adversaries. Zion cruised through to the final where he won with a 50 point dunk to finish off. Furthermore, Phoenix's star guard James Harden was able to take out the three point contest this year.

PAXSON STILL LEADS ALL PROSPECTS; SCOUTS PERPLEXED OVER REST OF FIELD

It is hard to see a world in which Minnesota's Pete Paxson doesn't have his name called out first up in the 2023 NBA Draft. The consensus best player in the draft is an all round beast with defensive prowess likened to Draymond Green yet the ability to score at will from anywhere on the floor. The 6'9" forward continues to boost his stock and will certainly be a name all organisations will want to have on their roster.

After him, things start to get murky. Pittsburgh centre Frank Daniels and Ervin Moreland (Guard, Seton Hall) are both 19 and have impressed scouts so far this season, Daniels being the more raw prospect of the two. Then you have the two international stars, Wilfred Stuart of England and Angelo De Luca of Italy. The caveat of drafting either of these two is that they probably won't come over to the NBA for another year yet they are both expected to be big contributors when they do come to the league. Andrew Newton is another PF who's name is being mentioned in the early lottery, however that may be due to the lack of clear options at the 4 in this draft class.

This is where we place some of our top prospects, grouped by positon:

Point Guard
Raul Rodriguez - Puerto Rice - 22 years old - 5'10" - Mid/late lottery
Thomas Ingram - Memphis - 23 years old - 6'2" - Late lottery

Power Forward

Angelo De Luca - Italy - 22 years old - 6'8" - Top 5

- This was one of the better games the Rockets have played all season however the quality of their opposition shone leading to the result.

- The play-in dream has been kept alive as the Rockets were able to close out the Suns thanks to a fast finish.
- Whilst Russell and SGA starred with the ball, the story of the game was courtesy of how the Rockets were able to keep Suns’ star James Harden in check, as he shot 11-28 from the field including just 2-7 from deep
- It is easy to see why Markelle Fultz is the hot favourite to win the Sixth Man of the Year award as he exploded off the bench. He was able to absolutely smash the rim several times on his way to 18 points shooting a fantastic 9-10.
- This win pushes the Rockets to 11th in the West, just half a game behind nine and tenth as well as one full game behind the Kings in eight place. Their match up in a week's time is against the 10th placed Grizzlies which could decide who sneaks into this years play in.

NBA.com LOOKS AT THE LAST WEEK OF THE REGULAR SEASON
Huge rumours out of Houston rock their preparation to sneak into the playoffs

JARRETT ALLEN UNSETTLED WITH THE ROCKETS?

Huge news has come out of Houston, Texas today where reports are saying that star centre Jarrett Allen is allegedly unhappy with how things are going. Allen is in the midst of a breakout year, bringing in 16 points per contest to go with 14.3 rebounds and an amazing 3.5 blocks per game. The front-runner for the NBA Most Improved Player award caught up with Ben Golliver recently discussing his All-Star snub and his desire to win.

Allen was quoted as saying he has been "anxious" with how his year in Houston has gone as they stumble towards the end of the season. The Rockets' management made several big deals at the trade deadline, sending away Harrison Barnes among others in return for Joe Harris, Matisse Thybulle and Dorian Finney-Smith. Houston have gone 2-1 since then, with their only loss being against the star-studded San Antonio Spurs.

Golliver pressed Allen as to why he has been unsettled throughout the year and Allen inferred his lack of usage due to the ball-dominance of guards D'Angelo Russell and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was the catalyst in these emotions. Will one of these stars be gone before the beginning of next season? The way the Rockets finish this year will definitely play a major role in determining this.

THE RUN HOME FOR THE WEST

Here is a look at how the bottom of the West looks heading into the last week of the regular season. After each team name is their current record and how many games they have left to play in 2021-22.

6 - Minnesota Timberwolves (15-12) - 2 games remaining
7 - Phoenix Suns (15-13) - 1 game remaining
8 - Memphis Grizzlies (14-13) - 2 games remaining
9 - Sacramento Kings (14-13) - 2 games remaining
10 - Denver Nuggets (14-14) - 1 game remaining
11 - Houston Rockets (13-14) - 2 games remaining
12 - Portland Trail Blazers (13-15) - 1 game remaining

Any result is a possibility from here on out and tie-breakers will definitely come into play. The Rockets take on Memphis tomorrow in a match that has huge implications for all teams involved so will be watched on eagerly by all the contenders in the West. One thing is true for the sides battling it out - just win and you'll have nothing to worry about!

CADE TAKES HOME ROTY, DONOVAN NBA's BEST COACH

Cade Cunningham capped off a strong rookie season by taking home Rookie of the Year honours. The 6'6" guard out of Oklahoma State formed a dynamic backcourt with Luka Doncic throughout the year for the Indiana Pacers as they just fell short of the play-in tournament. Cunningham lived up to his hype as the first pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, averaging 19.2ppg to go along with 5.8rpg and 4.6apg. He also showed off his defensive prowess averaging a steal and 0.9 of a block in each contest. This award continues to build excitement in Indiana, as they look to progress even further next year to be competitive in the East.

The Chicago Bulls took the league by storm, largely due to the impact that Coach of the Year Billy Donovan was able to have on the squad. Whilst the Bulls don't have the most star-studded lineup, they finished with the league's best record by far and look to go deep into the playoffs this year led by Fred VanVleet and Zach LaVine. This is Donovan's first time winning this award.

ALL THE RESULTS FROM PLAY-IN 2022
The second installment of the NBA play-in has led to some big highs, and some low lows

ROCKETS ROUT HAPLESS KINGS TO BOOK A TRIP TO THE PLAYOFFS

SAC | 32 | 22 | 24 | 26 | 104
HOU | 32 | 27 | 44 | 24 | 127

A third quarter blitzed led by the Rockets' star-studded backcourt was the catalyst for a blowout win in Houston. D'Angelo Russell and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander were fantastic with the ball in hand as Sacramento simply had no answers down the stretch.

The game began in a tight fashion, both teams hitting their shots at a high rate and moving the ball quickly. Scores were level at the end of the first as neither side could really string together any momentum. This arm wrestled continued through the second stanza as the defence of both sides tightened up and heading into the half it appeared to be anyones game.

Then the Rockets decided to go on a 34-10 run to put the game beyond doubt.

D'Lo, SGA and Jalen Green provided a spark on the offensive end, all getting to the rim with ease whilst also knocking down the deep shots when required. Russell alone scored 19 in the third quarter as Houston simply couldn't miss. With the lead stretching up around thirty points in the last quarter, the Rockets cleared their benches and the Kings managed to bring the scores a bit closer.

The real shining light for Houston tonight was their defence. Matisse Thybulle earned his first start in Rockets' colours and excelled, holding his matchup Jayson Tatum to just 19 points on 8-18 shooting. Jarrett Allen and Precious Achiuwa continued to show their shot blocking prowess, while Shai joined in the fun with three blocks of his own. Bam Adebayo was held to just 6 points and 4 rebounds as he was outplayed by his opposing bigs.

Securing the victory means that Houston will head to New Orleans to take on the Pelicans, whilst Sacramento will attempt to slow down the Grizzlies in a win or go home situation.

Russell: 44pts, 6reb, 5ast, 1stl, 1blk
Gilgeous-Alexander: 31pts, 6reb, 14ast, 3blk
Green: 18pts, 2reb
Allen: 14pts, 9reb, 3blk
Achiuwa: 4pts, 10reb, 3blk

Tatum: 19pts, 6reb, 2ast
McLaughlin: 12pts, 3ast
Lowry: 11pts, 6ast
Vanderbilt: 10pts, 12reb, 2stl

CYA LATER SUNS

The Memphis Grizzlies kept their season alive, taking down Phoenix 127-121 in an entertaining affair. Rookie Cameron Thomas starred with 25 points for the Grizz, ably assisted by Bradley Beal (22pts, 6reb, 4ast) and LaMelo Ball (16pts, 8reb, 7ast, 3stl) while Bojan Bogdanovic chipped in with 23 points of his own. This win sets up a showdown in Sacramento that Memphis will surely be confident in after they were demolished by Houston.

James Harden tried his best for the Suns, racking up an impressive statline of 33 points, 6 rebounds and 13 assists but just couldn't find enough help. Harden comes off the books this year for the Suns and is expected to test his value in free agency. Hot favourite for Sixth Man of the Year Markelle Fultz provided some scoring off the bench, but it was a case of not enough efficiency for Phoenix who may look to overhaul their roster this summer. Veteran Carmelo Anthony has already stated he plans to sign elsewhere and signs point to a rebuild in Arizona.

MEM | 33 | 25 | 34 | 35 | 127
PHX | 34 | 24 | 28 | 35 | 121

MOTOR CITY ROLLS ON IN WIN OVER THE HEAT

Kevin Durant showed why he is a class above the rest as he led the Pistons to a seven point victory over the Heat. KD dropped a cool 40 points with able assistance from the likes of Jrue Holiday and Clint Capela as Detroit look to fight on in the post season. Capela shone with 11 points, 14 board, 4 steals and 3 blocks as the rattling Detroit defence held Miami to just 18 points in the second quarter and kept the lead from there.

The Heat were always going to struggle missing star Ja Morant, however Tobias Harris, Caris LeVert and Alec Burks all made sure Miami were competitive throughout the night. It will be time to run it back in Miami as they hope their young core will continue to develop in order to make some more noise come this time next year.

DET | 23 | 23 | 30 | 29 | 105

CAVS HAVE NO ANSWERS FOR CRAZY KNICKS PERFORMANCE

New York Knicks have made their way into the playoffs thanks to a 39 point win over the Cleveland Cavaliers. Several Knicks players put up insane numbers, including Collin Sexton (30pts, 4ast), Dejounte Murray (22pts, 12reb, 10ast), Michael Porter Jr (22pts, 15reb) and of course, Karl-Anthony Towns (18pts, 13reb, 7ast, 2blk). The huge win has sent a statement through the Eastern Conference and sets up a huge first round showdown against Nikola Jokic and the Atlanta Hawks.

For Cleveland, there were few things to celebrate in the blowout loss. Ayo Dosunmu tried to rally his side, but quiet nights from Kawhi Leonard (10 points, 4-11 shooting) and Kemba Walker (7 points, 3-17 shooting) meant the chance of a Cavs miracle was miniscule. They still remain one of the toughest matchups in the league on paper, and will be confident heading into their match with Detroit that they can slow down Kevin Durant and come away with a win.

The play-in is complete as we take a look at each round one matchup

It was a case of pain again for fans of both the Sacramento Kings and the Detroit Pistons as both Memphis and Cleveland forced their way into the playoffs. The Kings went down by just two points at home whilst Kevin Durant was unable to star for Detroit as Cleveland proved too strong. RUSSELL LEADS ROCKETS TO GAME ONE WIN IN NEW ORLEANS

Houston Rockets (0-0) @ New Orleans Pelicans (0-0)
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander | D’Angelo Russell | Matisse Thybulle | Precious Achiuwa | Jarrett Allen
De’Aaron Fox | Donte DiVincenzo | Jimmy Butler | Wendell Carter Jr | Alperen Sengun

Houston Rockets guard D'Angelo Russell was simply unstoppable as he led a game one victory over the New Orleans Pelicans. Russell had a cool 41 points to go with 5 assists as he took advantage of the matchup against Donte DiVincenzo. Russell was ably assisted by his running mates Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Jarrett Allen in the blowout victory.

The stage was set early as Houston jumped out on a 12-2 run to start the game and never gave up the lead from there, at one stage leading by as much as 33. For the Pelicans, De'Aaron Fox chimed in with a largely inefficient 35 on 14-32 shooting. Star forward Jimmy Butler was tied down well by his counterpart Matisse Thybulle, who is proving to be the best acquisition throughout this season. Butler will need to lift his game in order to lead the Pelicans to a win in game two.

The Rockets attributed the win to their uncompromising interior defence and ability to rebound the ball. Houston amassed 10 rejections opposed to the Pels' 2 whilst also outrebounding the home side 54-43. Houston also scored a huge 76 points in the paint, an area that New Orleans must tidy up if they want to hit back in this series.

HOU | 39 | 26 | 29 | 36 | 130
NOP | 24 | 21 | 29 | 27 | 101

Russell: 41pts, 2reb, 5ast
Gilgeous-Alexander: 21pts, 6ast, 2blk
Allen: 19pts, 21reb, 5ast, 2blk
Green: 16pts, 4ast
Achiuwa: 10pts, 10reb, 2stl, 4blk

Fox: 35pts, 5reb, 5ast
Butler: 16pts, 10reb, 3ast, 5 turnovers
DiVincenzo: 14pts, 5reb

MORE OF THE SAME IN GAME TWO AS ROCKETS CRUISE AGAIN

Houston Rockets (1-0) @ New Orleans Pelicans (0-1)
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander | D’Angelo Russell | Matisse Thybulle | Precious Achiuwa | Jarrett Allen
De’Aaron Fox | Donte DiVincenzo | Jimmy Butler | Wendell Carter Jr | Alperen Sengun

A ruthless triple-double from Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has helped the Houston Rockets to a 2-0 lead in their series against the New Orleans Pelicans. An amazing 44-19 first quarter in the Rockets favour saw them roll through to another blowout victory on the road. The Pelicans showed some resistance for the rest of the match, outscoring Houston for the rest of the game, but evidently couldn't claw back from the early deficit. This win sees the series head back to Houston where the Rockets will be confident they can dust out the broom and sweep the series.

Pelicans' star Jimmy Butler again was held in check by Matisse Thybulle on his way to 20pts shooting at 40% with 6 turnovers as De'Aaron Fox couldn't repeat his game one heroics. They will be happy, however, with the increased production from the likes of Max Strus who shot a lights out 5-5 from deep. Despite the huge loss, New Orleans will hope the momentum from the latter stages of this one carries through to Houston for them.

It was hard to fault any Rockets' player as they again cruised to an easy win, continuing their hot streak of momentum. D'Lo ably assisted Shai on both ends on the floor whilst Precious Achiuwa and Jarrett Allen held down the paint.
