It really speaks to the possible dominance of this trio sticking together to this point of their careers. This team vs the 2015-16 Warriors would have been one hell of a series.

That could've been incredible, for sure! As for this story, they're still looking tough even without Westbrook, so I certainly won't count them out.

New faces grace first seeds

After leading the West for most of the season, the Denver Nuggets have locked in the first seed for this year's playoffs, looking to cash in on an unprecedented upswing behind young superstar D'Angelo Russell. This will also mark the first ever #1 seed for the Toronto Raptors in the East, looking to bring their first championship to Canada.

Heat again enter as darkhorse, West as unpredictable as ever

Finishing in the fourth seed for a second straight year, the Miami Heat sit idly as the darkhorse of the East this postseason, looking to build on their two consecutive Finals appearances. In the West, contenders can be stretched all the way to the fifth seed, with the Pelicans, Warriors and Jazz all currently healthy and dangerous to face in a seven-game series. Could one of them bring the demise of the OKC dynasty?

Celtics slippery slope spells trouble

After just missing out on the first seed last season, the Boston Celtics have slumped dramatically, including an unimpressive 6 game skid to finish the season. With an injury to Joel Embiid ruling him out for the playoffs and missing the veteran leadership of Tim Duncan, the Celtics could be facing an early exit in the shadow of their Conference Finals appearance last postseason.

Nuggets might be peaking at just the right time, especially with the Thunder missing Westbrook.

Re: The 2K10 & Beyond Project - Season 16/17: Season Review - Lottery Teams

Postby jubba910 on Thu Apr 28, 2022 7:29 am

Season Review – Lottery Teams

30. Orlando Magic (25-57)
Notable upcoming Free Agents: Brook Lopez (81), Julius Randle (78) (T), Dario Saric (75) (2YRT), Dewayne Dedmon (74), Beno Udrih (73), Nate Robinson (72), Andrea Bargnani (73), Jerian Grant (72) (2YRT), Tyler Ennis (70) (T)

A perennial contender bows out of the hunt in Orlando. The streak of playoff appearances has come to an end for the Magic, and likely forcing their second rebuild since 2011 after impressively shooting up the rankings with Brook Lopez. Their big man appears to be on the outs as the franchise heads in a different direction, steered by Julius Randle and Dario Saric.

29. Chicago Bulls (27-55)
Notable upcoming Free Agents: Derrick Rose (77), T.J. Warren (76) (T), Justin Anderson (72) (2YRT), Terry Rozier (71) (2YRT), Malcolm Brogdon (71) (T), Cristiano Felicio (71), Rashad Vaughn (70) (2YRT)

Another tough season for the Windy City, as captain Derrick Rose goes down with two more serious injuries. A lot of faith is being put in their new crop, but without their own first round Pick this season and only a Boston mid-to-late first, Chicago could still be a while away from contending once again. One thing going for the Bulls is the likely free agency of Kevin Durant, luring the three-time MVP to the landmark franchise.

28. Los Angeles Lakers (29-53)
Notable upcoming Free Agents: Patrick Patterson (77), Emmanuel Mudiay (77) (2YRT), Timofey Mozgov (75), Josh Smith (74), Andre Roberson (74), Donatas Motiejunas (74), Quincy Pondexter (74), Marcelo Huertas (73) (T), Kevon Looney (72), Sam Dekker (71) (2YRT), Tarik Black (71) (T)

It's a fire sale in Los Angeles, with the Lakers clearing house on a majority of bad contracts. Also missing their first rounder similar to the Bulls, the iconic purple and gold is in a holding pattern, banking on the likes of Nikola Vucevic, Emmanuel Mudiay and Sam Dekker to salvage at least some success next season.

27. Philadelphia 76ers (29-53)
Notable upcoming Free Agents: Derrick Favors (84) (P), Devin Booker (79) (2YRT), Robin Lopez (76), Marcus Morris (76), Kendrick Perkins (72)

Another developing year for the Sixers, as they look to stockpile another top draft prospect. With a combination of experience plus youth including the recently awarded Rookie of the Year Ben Simmons, Philadelphia looks to be once again on an upward trajectory, and back in the postseason hunt next season. Derrick Favors will be key to retain, though with their cap space and prospects, there's always a chance for a deal to be put on the table for another low-post star.

26. Detroit Pistons (29-53)
Notable upcoming Free Agents: Aaron Gordon (77) (T), Mario Hezonja (74) (2YRT), Jordan Mickey (72) (2YRT)

Bad luck continues for the Pistons, who remain the only team in the Eastern Conference to miss the postseason since 2010. Trading away Chris Bosh at the deadline all but signals that the playoffs will not be on the horizon for the Pistons any time soon, as they continue to build around their young core. Pressure will be on Brandon Knight to improve his production after a substantial dip in performance over last season, while Al Jefferson's one year extension at the deadline appears to be table-setting for prospect Domantas Sabonis to take over as Detroit's big man of the future.

25. Los Angeles Clippers (31-51)
Notable upcoming Free Agents: C.J. McCollum (83), Dennis Schroder (78), Carl Landry (74), Devin Harris (73), Alexis Ajinca (73), Wesley Johnson (73)

Another team to blow up their roster at the deadline, the Clippers now look to reset, with the first step being the re-signing of C.J. McCollum, followed by Dennis Schroder. With star PF Blake Griffin locked up for the long haul, there is potential to emulate the success of the Magic in a flash rebuild in the seasons to come, with a strong first rounder injecting life back into the former contenders.

24. Dallas Mavericks (31-51)
Notable upcoming Free Agents: Dirk Nowitzki (84), Stanley Johnson (76) (2YRT), Darrell Arthur (75), Boban Marjanovic (75), Spencer Hawes (73), Deyonta Davis (71) (T), Adreian Payne (70)

The Mavericks continue their state of flux, relying on aging stars that appear to have their tanks on empty. A lucky lottery selection is essential for Dallas to have any chance of contending in the near future, haunted by their oversized contracts to both Rajon Rondo and Rudy Gay.

23. Washington Wizards (31-51)
Notable upcoming Free Agents: Kyle Lowry (86) (P), Andrew Wiggins (83) (T), Nerlens Noel (79), Enes Kanter (77) (P), Frank Kaminsky (75) (2YRT), Kevin Seraphin (72)

A disappointing season for the Wizards, who on-paper looked likely to take the next step from playoff participant to contender. An early loss of Enes Kanter took its toll however, sitting Washington at the lower end of the East for another season. Kyle Lowry's Player Option will be key to watch, as the tandem of Lowry and Reggie Jackson doesn't appear to be clicking on all cylinders. Another player to spotlight has to be Andrew Wiggins, who plateaued this season when expected to take over as the franchises #1 option.

22. Phoenix Suns (32-50)
Notable upcoming Free Agents: Jabari Parker (81) (T), Zach LaVine (78) (T), Jerryd Bayless (75), Josh Richardson (74), Alan Williams (70), Dorrell Wright (70)

Matching the Pistons in the East, the Suns are the only West team to not taste the postseason since 2010. Considered a rebuilding year, Phoenix came out sluggish but recovered well down the stretch. It was another strong year for superstar PG John Wall, and with further development from Jabari Parker and key trade piece Zach LaVine, there's still hope that this lineup could cause issues in the near future.

21. Indiana Pacers (32-50)
Notable upcoming Free Agents: Chris Bosh (86), Kyle O'Quinn (78), Allen Crabbe (75), Ty Lawson (74), Trey Lyles (73) (2YRT)

A crash and burn for the Pacers, taking the plunge on Chris Bosh to will themselves to the postseason. The Pacers are stuck in the middle at the moment, with the major regression of both Ty Lawson and Roy Hibbert causing serious problems with Indiana's development. It wouldn't be a surprise to see the Pacers in a worse position this time next year.

20. Sacramento Kings (34-48)
Notable upcoming Free Agents: Zach Randolph (79), Michael Beasley (75), Cameron Payne (74) (2YRT), Paul Pierce (73)

Another aging lineup that has run its course, Paul Pierce, Michael Beasley and Zach Randolph all look likely to fly the coop as the Kings reset once again, failing to measure up to their great performances earlier in the decade. A weak prospect pool lines Sacramento up with the Pacers as another team likely to take a tumble next year.

19. Atlanta Hawks (34-48)
Notable upcoming Free Agents: Joe Johnson (77), Elfrid Payton (76) (T), Gary Harris (76) (T), J.J. Hickson (74), Chase Budinger (70)

A positive year to build on in Atlanta, as Nicolas Batum continues to outplay his contract with a second straight All-Star selection. Young prospects Jamal Murray and Miles Turner will be the future of the Hawks franchise, which is looking a lot brighter than most anticipated, especially with the loss of J.J. Hickson during the season. After 11 years in Atlanta, Joe Johnson looks likely to have another go-round, continuing his mentorship of Jamal Murray.

18. Portland Trail Blazers (36-46)
Notable upcoming Free Agents: Thaddeus Young (80) (P), Jusuf Nurkic (77) (T), C.J. Miles (75), Jason Smith (73), Randy Foye (72), Briante Weber (71) (T), Jeff Ayres (70)

No team suffered more this season from injuries than the Trail Blazers, who sit as one of the biggest "what could have been" stories the league has seen in quite a while. With a majority of the crew likely to return, next year is where we can truly measure the power of this Blazers lineup, who looks to be the best ever assembled.

17. Memphis Grizzlies (38-44)
Notable upcoming Free Agents: Ersan Ilyasova (74), Mitch McGary (72) (T)

Despite trading out longtime PG Mike Conley and likely turning a new leaf, the Grizzlies were only a few wins away from a playoff berth. With Chicago's first rounder in a similar position to the Mavericks pick from last season, Memphis needs to earn back their reputation of strong picks after a lackluster first season from Dragan Bender. With Kawhi Leonard in his prime and Patrick Mills more than stepping up to the plate, could the Grizzlies ship the pick for a superstar and get themselves back in the playoff hunt?

Re: The 2K10 & Beyond Project - Season 16/17: First Round Completed Series

Postby jubba910 on Sat Apr 30, 2022 9:07 am

Playoffs: First Round Completed Series

Western Conference

(1) Denver Nuggets vs (8) Houston Rockets

Game 1: HOU 80 @ DEN 90, DeAndre Jordan - 15 pts, 13 reb
Game 2: HOU 98 @ DEN 120, D'Angelo Russell - 21 pts, 11 ast, 5 stl
Game 3: DEN 102 @ HOU 93, D'Angelo Russell - 24 pts, 11 ast
Game 4: DEN 111 @ HOU 90, D'Angelo Russell - 29 pts, 5 ast
DEN wins 4-0

The Nuggets continue to dominate, taking advantage of the wounded Rockets behind outstanding play from Sophomore superstar D'Angelo Russell.

(3) New Orleans Pelicans vs (6) San Antonio Spurs
Game 1: SA 108 @ NO 116, Klay Thompson - 36 pts, 5 reb
Game 2: SA 85 @ NO 93, Karl-Anthony Towns - 25 pts, 21 reb
Game 3: NO 101 @ SA 88, Tobias Harris - 28 pts, 6 reb
Game 4: NO 88 @ SA 119, Chris Paul - 22 pts, 5 ast
Game 5: SA 104 @ NO 105, Nikola Jokic - 28 pts, 14 reb
NO wins 4-1

An incredibly well-balanced display by the Pelicans, dismantling the veteran Spurs with a different star shining in each win. The Pelicans now advance to the second round, for the first time the Chris Paul-led Hornets of 2011.

(2) Oklahoma City Thunder vs (7) Minnesota Timberwolves
Game 1: MIN 103 @ OKC 113, James Harden - 44 pts, 8 reb, 6 ast, 7 stl
Game 2: MIN 101 @ OKC 115, Kevin Durant - 39 pts, 6 reb, 7 ast
Game 3: OKC 94 @ MIN 101, Kevin Love - 23 pts, 7 reb
Game 4: OKC 152 @ MIN 98, James Harden - 46 pts, 6 reb, 6 ast
Game 5: MIN 103 @ OKC 98, Kevin Love - 24 pts, 10 reb
Game 6: OKC 92 @ MIN 87, Kevin Durant - 21 pts, 7reb, 8 ast
OKC wins 4-2

A valiant effort from the Timberwolves, bouncing back to take Game 5 after a 54-point thumping on their home floor in Game 5. The Thunder now move on to the team they swept in the first round last season in the Pelicans, looking to back in their two superstars who are already putting up ridiculous numbers in Westbrook's absence.

Eastern Conference

(1) Toronto Raptors vs (8) Charlotte Hornets
Game 1: CHA 105 @ TOR 103, Danilo Gallinari - 22 pts, 5 reb
Game 2: CHA 109 @ TOR 112, Bogdan Bogdanovic - 36 pts, 5 ast, 5 stl
Game 3: TOR 120 @ CHA 96, DeMar DeRozan - 29 pts, 5 reb, 10 ast
Game 4: TOR 101 @ CHA 93, Jahlil Okafor - 19 pts, 7 reb
Game 5: CHA 95 @ TOR 99, DeMar DeRozan - 36 pts, 10 reb
TOR wins 4-1

A scare to start off the playoff campaign of the top seeded Raptors, but a cruisy gentleman's sweep sees Canada's only franchise comfortably through to the second round.

(4) Miami Heat vs (5) New York Knicks
Game 1: NY 101 @ MIA 117, Kyrie Irving - 29 pts, 10 ast
Game 2: NY 88 @ MIA 113, Kyrie Irving - 27 pts, 11 ast
Game 3: MIA 97 @ NY 90, Kyrie Irving - 29 pts, 7 ast
Game 4: MIA 124 @ NY 99, Kyrie Irving - 49 pts, 6 reb, 7 ast
MIA wins 4-0

The postseason Heat strike again, this time at the behest of the New York Knicks, who sorely missed the lockdown defense of Jrue Holiday, as Kyrie Irving commanded a dominant sweep, setting up a rematch of last year's first round matchup with Toronto.

(2) Milwaukee Bucks vs (7) Boston Celtics
Game 1: BOS 92 @ MIL 90, Isaiah Thomas, 15 points, 7 reb, 10 ast
Game 2: BOS 108 @ MIL 101, Isaiah Thomas - 25 pts, 5 ast
Game 3: MIL 92 @ BOS 101, Isaiah Thomas - 34 pts, 7 ast
Game 4: MIL 100 @ BOS 77, Paul George - 22 pts, 10 reb, 6 ast
Game 5: BOS 129 @ MIL 124, Isaiah Thomas - 23 pts, 9 ast
BOS wins 4-1

Defying critics that wrote them off after their late season slump, the Celtics take the major scalp of the second seed Bucks, who nursed injuries to both Paul George & Kemba Walker throughout the series.

Playoffs: First Round Game 7's

(5) UTA 116 @ (4) GS 105
UTA wins 4-3

Brow, Jazz best MVP Curry and Warriors

Image
Arguably the biggest "pick em" matchup of the first round went down to the wire as expected, with Anthony Davis and the Jazz coming out victorious in Oakland, handing MVP Stephen Curry and the Warriors a heartbreaking first round defeat. The Jazz have now set up an all-Northwest Conference Semifinal rematch from last season with the first seed Nuggets.

Image

(8) BKN 97 @ (1) CLE 112
CLE wins 4-3

Teague shines again in Game 7, Cavs move on

Image
Battling another Game 7 in the first round on their home floor, the Cavaliers advanced against a hampered Nets team without Mike Conley, with their own PG Jeff Teague once again shining on the big stage with 22 points and 14 assists.

Conference Semifinals: Playoff Tree

Image

Season Review – First Round Eliminations

16. Charlotte Hornets (41-41)
Notable upcoming Free Agents: Danilo Gallinari (80), Tyreke Evans (80), Tony Parker (79), Cody Zeller (79), Omer Asik (75), Marcus Thornton (74), Shabazz Napier (71) (T), Christian Wood (70) (T)

A strong showing from the developing Hornets, who most wouldn't have considered making the postseason purely from their roster on-paper. With major pieces out of contract, Charlotte has a lot of thinking to do around whether they keep both Danilo Gallinari and Tyreke Evans, or do they throw their hat in the ring for Kevin Durant? The cameo season from Tony Parker may be set for another go-round, however the strong development of Kris Dunn could see Parket have to take a limited role in order to not stump development of the Hornets' PG of the future.

15. Houston Rockets (41-41)
Notable upcoming Free Agents: Eric Bledsoe (84) (P), Kristaps Porzingis (80) (2YRT), Clint Capela (78) (T), Evan Turner (77), Markieff Morris (76), Nick Young (71) (P)

An expected result for the youthful rockets without their leader Eric Bledsoe. Bledsoe's Player Option looms large over the Rockets, who with a strong core of young prospects will depend on his veteran leadership. Key pieces in Evan Turner and Markieff Morris will be key to retain also if H-Town plans to return to the postseason.

14. Minnesota Timberwolves (43-39)
Notable upcoming Free Agents: Jordan McRae (71)

With little roster changes expected and a full offseason under their belts, the Melo & Love Timberwolves will look to come back better than ever next season, and arguably could've pushed the Thunder further if Bradley Beal was healthy. It's way too early to judge this experiment in Minnesota, but one thing is for sure; it will be one of the most interesting teams of next season.

13. San Antonio Spurs (43-39)
Notable upcoming Free Agents: J.J. Redick (77), Larry Nance Jr. (75) (2YRT), David West (75), Maurice Harkless (73), Jonathon Simmons (71), Lucas Nogueria (70) (T)

Stacking up on veterans did little to change the result for the Spurs with another first round exit. Appearing to be stuck in flux, San Antonio may need to dig deeper into their future to provide results for today with Chris Paul locked up for another 4 years at a minimum.

12. Brooklyn Nets (46-36)
Notable upcoming Free Agents: Marcus Smart (79) (T), Matthew Dellavedova (76), Solomon Hill (74), Willie Cauley-Stein (73) (2YRT), Matt Barnes (73), Dion Waiters (73), Sean Kilpatrick (72) (T), A.J. Hammons (70) (T)

Not the result that the Nets were aiming for with the acquisition of Mike Conley at the deadline. Though despite his absence in the postseason, Brooklyn still managed to push through to a Game 7 against the much stronger Cavaliers. Like the Timberwolves, a full offseason with Conley at the helm should do well to solidify the Nets chances of becoming a legitimate contender.

11. New York Knicks (49-33)
Notable upcoming Free Agents: Giannis Antetokounmpo (84), Jeff Withey (74), Jarell Martin (70) (2YRT)

Faced with an incredibly tough matchup in the two-time reigning East champions in the first round, the inexperienced Knicks crumbled under the playoff pressure without PG Jrue Holiday. All signs point to a major extension for Giannis Antetokounmpo, as The Big Apple looks to build on their comeback to the East's top echelon.

10. Milwaukee Bucks (53-29)
Notable upcoming Free Agents: Marvin Williams (77), Dante Exum (75) (T)

Despite their best record since the 2000-01 season, injuries to both Paul George and Kemba Walker left the Bucks vulnerable to the Celtics, who snapped them up in five games. Little roster changes will see Milwaukee bounce back, however with further postseason success, it may be time to re-jig some major pieces in order to ensure playoff success.

9. Golden State Warriors (54-28)
Notable upcoming Free Agents: DeMarcus Cousins (88) (P), Cole Aldrich (74), Doug McDermott (75) (T)

A hard fought battle with the Jazz in the first round matchup sees the Warriors regroup after a solid season. Bouncing back from an injury that saw him miss the last two months of the season, Stephen Curry's ascent to MVP has to keep Bay Area fans hopeful that next season could spell better fortunes for the franchise.

Playoffs: Conference Semifinals

(5) UTA 117 @ (1) DEN 125 (OT)
UTA leads 3-2

Nuggets stay alive, hold on in OT

Image
Facing a tough challenge on their home floor, D'Angelo Russell and the Nuggets managed to stave off elimination at least for one more game, heading back to Utah to force a Game 7.

Image

Image

(3) NO 122 @ (2) OKC 129
OKC wins 4-1

Harden, Thunder make quick work of Pelicans

Image
James Harden and the Thunder silenced the doubters once again with a dominant series win over the Pelicans, who on-paper appeared to be one of their toughest possible matchups. Now with all the momentum of a 4-1 series win, Oklahoma City now head to the Conference Finals seeking their fifth consecutive title.

Image

Image

(5) MIA 107 @ (1) TOR 88
TOR leads 3-2

Irving, Heat take win in Toronto, Raptors lose DeRozan

Image
Despite holding a 3-2 lead, the Toronto Raptors are on shaky ground against the reigning East champions, losing their star G DeMar DeRozan for the rest of the playoffs, putting the franchise's best ever chance at a title on the rocks. Lead by superstar Kyrie Irving, the veteran Heat look extremely dangerous to mount a comeback and head back to the Conference Finals.

Image

Image

(7) BOS 97 @ (3) CLE 104
BOS leads 3-2

LeBron, Cavs stay alive against darkhorse Celtics

Image
Saved by their hometown hero LeBron James, the Cavaliers managed to avoid elimination on their home floor in Game 5 against the underdog Celtics, who have replicated their feistiness that delivered their first round scalp of the Milwaukee Bucks. Needing luck on their side, the Cavs now head to the Garden to tie the series and force a Game 7.

Image

Williams strikes again, Cavaliers complete comeback

Image
Proving his Game 6 performance wasn't a one-off, Mo Williams again lead the Cavaliers to another win over the Celtics, including back-to-back threes to complete a 3-1 series comeback and the Cavaliers' first appearance in the Conference Finals since 2010.

Conference Finals: Playoff Tree

Image

Season Review – Conference Semifinals Eliminations

8. Boston Celtics (41-41)
Notable upcoming Free Agents: Victor Oladipo (79), Joel Embiid (78) (T), Justise Winslow (76) (2YRT), Brandon Bass (74), Andrew Nicholson (74), Omri Casspi (73)

One game away from a Conference Finals return can be considered a success for the youthful Celtics, who sorely missed Joel Embiid's presence in the post against the Cavaliers. With former #1 pick Victor Oladipo due for a big payday, and both Brandon Bass & Andrew Nicholson out of contract, the Celtics badly need more support at the PF position, which will likely be their biggest priority heading into free agency.

7. Miami Heat (50-32)
Notable upcoming Free Agents: Dwyane Wade (86), Bobby Portis (75) (T), Tiago Splitter (75), Aaron Brooks (74), Kyle Anderson (74) (T), Rondae Hollis-Jefferson (73) (2YRT), Josh McRoberts (72) (P)

A third straight Conference Finals wasn't meant to be for the Heat, losing out in a nail-biting Game 7 against the wounded but top seeded Raptors. Development of both Will Barton & Bobby Portis gives Miami faith in its future, however with Dwyane Wade out of contract and Kevin Durant in free agency, could this be it for this incarnation in South Beach?

6. New Orleans Pelicans (55-27)
Notable upcoming Free Agents: Karl-Anthony Towns (89) (2YRT), Michael Carter-Williams (76), Gerald Green (75), Raul Neto (74) (T), Marco Belinelli (72), Richaun Holmes (71)

Bested again by the dominant Thunder, the Pelicans were sent back home to lick their wounds again with a deflating 4-1 series loss. Dangerously young and promising, as well as mostly locked up for the near future, this is merely a speed bump for the Big Easy's franchise, set for a rise not too dissimilar to the team that has dispatched them from the playoffs the past two seasons.

5. Denver Nuggets (61-21)
Notable upcoming Free Agents: Steven Adams (83), D'Angelo Russell (80) (2YRT), Brandan Wright (76), Jeff Adrien (70) (T)

The fairytale in the Mile High City has come to an end. After a stellar 61-win season lead by superstar sophomore and Most Improved Player D'Angelo Russell as well as their twin towers, the Nuggets don't look to be slowing down. Seen as the ugly duckling through the Northwest Division's dominance of the Western Conference, Denver has more than truly staked its claim as another championship contender for years to come.

Playoffs: Conference Finals

(3) UTA 121 @ (2) OKC 128
UTA leads 3-2

Harden, Thunder win in unfamiliar territory, stay alive in WCF

Image
Facing their first ever 3-1 deficit in franchise history, the Oklahoma City Thunder staved off elimination on their home floor behind James Harden's outstanding 34-point, 16-assist performance, setting up a pivotal Game 6 in Salt Lake City to square the Conference Finals and keep their hopes of a fifth straight title alive.

Image

Image

(3) CLE 111 @ (1) TOR 87
CLE wins 4-1

Williams continues stellar play, sends Cavaliers to Finals

Image
For the first time in 10 years, LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers are heading to the NBA Finals, dispatching the shorthanded Raptors in five games. Much can be attributed to the outstanding play of Mo Williams, who in Jeff Teague's absence is playing the best basketball of his career.

Jazz on the verge of an epic win over a dynastic Thunder team...or a heart-breaking defeat following an epic comeback.

Jazz dispatch Thunder, head to Finals

For the first time in five years, the Western Conference will be represented by a team other than the Oklahoma City Thunder, with the Utah Jazz knocking out the four-time reigning champions convincingly in Salt Lake City.

NBA Finals: Playoff Tree

Season Review – Conference Finals Eliminations

4. Toronto Raptors (53-29)
Notable upcoming Free Agents: Tristan Thompson (82), Jahlil Okafor (79) (2YRT), Bogdan Bogdanovic (78) (T), Darren Collison (76), Joffrey Lauvergne (74), Corey Brewer (73), Kris Humphries (73), Noah Vonleh (71) (T), Isaiah Canaan (71) (T)

A fairytale season for the Raptors ends in a sour note, with superstar DeMar DeRozan's ankle injury possibly being the difference maker from a maiden Toronto Finals berth. Much can be said to the deadline acquisitions of Goran Dragic and Bogdan Bogdanovic, with Dragic's outstanding Game 7 performance against the Heat arguably immortalising him with the franchise. It will be an interesting offseason for the East's #1 seed, with Tristan Thompson eager to re-sign, what pieces could the Raptors add to further establish their place in the East's elite?

3. Oklahoma City Thunder (59-23)
Notable upcoming Free Agents: Kevin Durant (94), Norris Cole (74), Channing Frye (74), Thabo Sefolosha (72), Nick Collison (72), Henry Sims (71)

It's been four years since we've seen the Thunder absent from the NBA Finals stage, let alone not hoisting the NBA championship. Part of the reasoning can be placed on the loss of Russell Westbrook late in the season, proving that the combination of Kevin Durant and James Harden wasn't enough to tithe the franchise to as the Durant/Westbrook duo had done two years prior. The Oklahoma City dynasty is at a fork in the road, with both Westbrook and Harden locked up, it could be time for arguably the greatest player of the modern era in Kevin Durant to fly the Thunder coop, and begin a new legacy in a different city to chase his sixth ring.

Finals Preview: Utah Jazz vs Cleveland Cavaliers

Previous matchups

10/1: CLE 118 @ UTA 81
17/1: UTA 94 @ CLE 93

LeBron returns to the Finals

Image

A full decade has passed, but LeBron James is finally back on basketball's biggest stage; The NBA Finals. Looking to eviscerate the embarrassing 4-0 sweep he suffered last time he took his hometown team to the Championship series, the pressure is on the King to deliver Cleveland's first ever title. It's been a rollercoaster of a decade between trips for LeBron, with his highly publicised trip to New York failing to pay off, his return has instilled the hope in Cleveland once again that he can bring them a championship.

Has Utah's new wave arrived?

Image Image Image

Knocking on the door of the Western Conference for the past couple years, Utah's young guns Anthony Davis, Jimmy Butler and Rudy Gobert now get their shot at greatness. A dynamic trio that is further boosted by the likes of Rodney Hood and Paul Millsap, the Jazz are in good stead to begin their own dynasty with these three, and have their chance to have it plated in gold by winning the franchises first ever championship.

Cavaliers get massive boost heading into Finals series, creating headache at PG

Image Image

With a majority of their postseason campaign hampered by injuries, the Cleveland Cavaliers will come into the Finals injury free, with both Jeff Teague and Ryan Anderson recovering from a high ankle sprain and broken rib respectively. This does however place a spanner in the works for the Cavaliers, with Mo Williams playing the best basketball of his career, it could be likely that Teague will take a back seat for at least Game 1 as the veteran PG continues his hot streak.

Veteran Williams' get their chance

Image Image

After being the anchor of the Jazz offense for the better part of a decade, Deron Williams will finally have his shot at glory. With his stellar offensive skills on the decline, Williams has managed to up his distributor ability to his star-studded teammates to lead a feisty offense, while possessing the lockdown ability of nailing down the league's best ball-handlers. As Deron hits his twighlight and prospect Dejounte Murray prepares to take the reigns, there's no more fitting send off to his starting career than a championship ring. On the other side we see Mo Williams, in the best form of his long career, steering the Cavaliers through the last two playoff series. Similar to LeBron James, it's been a roundabout journey since Williams was in a Cavaliers uniform, shifted across Toronto and New Orleans before returning to The Land this past offseason to re-connect with the King. Even with the return of Jeff Teague, it's likely we'll at least see the starting PG matchup from 2009-10 to open the series.

2012 Finals adversaries meet again

Image Image

It's a flashback to 2012, as Eric Gordon and Tyson Chandler will meet again in the NBA Finals, however both for different teams than they did five years ago. Both playing important roles on their respective teams, they represent the break in monotony that has existed since their last appearance, with Chandler looking to secure his first ring on his sixth team.

NBA Finals: Game 2

CLE 93 @ UTA 118
UTA leads 2-0

Jazz continue dominance, take 2-0 lead

Image
It was more of the same for Game 2, with Anthony Davis firming as the Finals MVP favourite with another monster performance. It's been the opposite for Cleveland star LeBron James, who again scored in the single digits and is in dire need of a breakout performance in Game 3.
