EA to Buy 2K Sports?

Postby Coyroy on Sun Feb 18, 2007 8:21 am

Earlier today Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst Michael Pachter was advising investors to sell Take Two Interactive stock due to the company's ongoing financial and legal issues. Take Two owns 2K Games, 2K Sports, Rockstar and Global Star brands and interestingly enough Pachter also claimed that now would be the right for EA to swoop in and buy out 2K Sports giving EA a monopoly on football, basketball, baseball, and hockey.*

You think a new live expectations can shape up ?

if that happens. Ea won't even need to try anymore. Unless they take the 2ksports guys to replace the bunch they have working for them now.. at least the 2ksports guys know what they are doing.

Pachter said he likes the company's current management and doesn't think a different group of people could get the publisher in shape any quicker but still laments high turnover over the past two years. Among the departures he mentioned were Rockstar Games co-founder Terry Donovan, Take-Two founder Ryan Brant, and board member Barbara Kazcynski, who took parting shots at the company's management in her resignation letter. He also noted that it wasn't clear if Take-Two's stock option scandal woes were over just yet and said the resulting lack of quarterly financial reports while the company gets its books in order makes it difficult to assess the publisher's progress.

My overall outlook is bad. It won't be good for EA to have a monopoly. As far as the Live series, it could mean that it gets better by adding the Take Two employees into EA's. EA could also continue to half ass it because they don't have any competitors due to the monopoly in sports games. I hate it when good game developers just die or get bought off.
One good thing is they could get the baseball license back.

Look at some of the games by Take Two

Elder Scrolls IV - Oblivion - I don't really like role playing games, but this one was plain awesome.
Prey - Been in development for over 10 years, finally came out, and was great, imo.
GTA series - nuff said
2K series - nuff said
BioShock - not released but looks like it will be an awesome FPS.
...list goes on.

I'm still a Live player but I certainly don't like the idea of a monopoly since we all know that it doesn't benefit the consumer, be it the lack of competition to push each other or simply a lack of choice.

Arrgh... I really hope this won't happen. :( I converted to 2K last year, and now Live feels almost unplayable.

Yeah, hopefully that won't happen.
2K has released some phenomenal games, like Pdub said, and it'd be probably better for the Live series (and for any other series from these 2 companies) if the buyout doesn't happen.
Even if it sounds cliché, monopolies are almost never good for consumers...

I think if this happens, I might be forced to switch to soccer games for my basketball fix, if that's possible :(

That does not sound good at all...

Why aren't Rockstar their own company? They dont make enough games or something? I knew they were owned by Take Two but they could ride on the success of GTA lol.

If EA does buy 2K Sports, maybe there will be the chance that EA will let them make all of their basketball games and release them on PC...But if they don't, I'd rather have EA and 2K separate.

Bad news if EA buy 2K7.

Andrew, you still play Live, is that 07?

There's been a lot of bashing of Live 06, what's your opinion on the game? I enjoyed it thinking back and can't remember any reasons for it being worse than Live 05.

As I said in your thread I'd still go for NBA Live 06 over NBA Live 2005 but it depends if you like the FSS concept or not.

Thanks. I never really use the FSS moves, don't feel you have to against the CPU.
