Retrospective Reviews are back!

Postby Andrew on Sun Mar 11, 2007 3:03 pm

It's been a while, but the retrospective NBA Live reviews are back. Picking up where the last review left off I've taken a look back at NBA Live 2001, the first game produced by the team that took the reigns from the original producers. Take a trip down memory lane with our NBA Live 2001 Retrospective and feel free to share your thoughts here in the NLSC Forum.

Good read. Definetly my favourite Live, not the one I still like to play but what I have the best memories of. The blocking system was 10 times better than the one we have had for a couple of years now, all textures were 2x or even 4x larger than those in 07, the player models could compete with 07 ones, the body proportions are much better. I really liked this game and would have continued my Raptors franchise if I had managed to get the game to run on this new laptop correctly, if someone could help me on that, I would appreciate that.

2001 was also heavily modded I remember, back then the patchmakers really had to have some skills to make players look like themselves, 2005-07 had some good cyberfaces right out of the box but the majority of the earlier games weren't so good.

2001 was the last game also to have the TV-camera, 2003 brought the press cam that was present til 06 made the view even more sidelinish.

Good read man, I am kinda curious about that Hardwood Classics DVD and what it was called.

^If anyone wants to hear the intro to the game I used it in that video.

EDIT: http://nbalive2001.ea.com/downloads_movie1.html
^just the beginning of it
Opinions are my own.

2001 was the first nba live i've ever played. i thought 2001 had the best menu layout. i wish this layout will be back in live 08 since it's been the same since live 2003.
I'm tired of hearing about money, money, money, money, money. I just want to play the game, drink Pepsi, wear Reebok.

I remember this game. Despite bugs, this was truly a great game. It was a great stepping stone, with defenders sliding out of the way if you did a good crossover or spin. One on one mode was really a challenge, especially against a legend like Jordan. Plus I loved that urban court. I'm glad the game was good enough for 2 years, for pc users.

Thanks everyone, glad you like them. :) I've had them sitting on my HD for about two years now so I figured it was about time to bring them back, albeit with a few updates since they were written around about the release of NBA Live 2005. I think NBA Live 2003's retrospective will be an interesting one.

Agreed, I'd definitely like to see the PC version of 08 use a similar interface to 2000 or 2001.

I remember 2001 as the game with players having no tattoos or accessories, and the symmetric arms and legs.

The dbfs weren't always patcher friendly either. Nevertheless, a lot of patches were produced up until the release of NBA Live 2003.
