Were you holding down the left trigger while guarding the person on offense? Doing so basically allows you to play lockdown defense, which makes the defender your controlling stay attached to the offensive player as long as your close enough to them.

Though his tutorials are primarily for 2K9 and 2K8, some of it can still be applied for 2K10 (probably 2K11 as well), especially most of the defense tutorials. Zihinmaster did a nice job of breaking it down.
