What the draft needs is this...
Draft day trading... The CPU should select the rookies at a slower pace and you could pause it at any time... And suggest trades to other teams with the players and the unused draft picks. So you could move up and down during the draft. And different teams would have different intrests in different players. Like if some hot guy dropped like 5 steps in the draft you could maybe suggest a trade to the next team picking and suggest maybe a your both picks for their pick or even throw some players into the mix... Draft day trading would be nice...
And if a team really wanted a certain person, they'd ask to trade for your pick if you had a high pick and would offer something in return etc. etc. This would make the draft seem more alive.
This feature would ofcourse have to be joined with a "skip to next player pick" choice... To skip to your next pick.
One thing too that would add depth, would be a nice little animation. So that you'd have time to ponder and think about things before advancing through the list.
And turn up some hype about players... Rumor mill thingy could do the charm, like after a draft camp, there would be a list of the best players in the camp and some description of their ability... Every team knows something about every guy that are in the draft... You should have some sort of a feel for each player in the draft... And with scouting you'd get more detailed information like the stuff we get in Live 2005... But the old report cards from 2004 and before listing some good abilities and some bad abilities should be available on each player. There's so much information about these guys, that they don't even know about themselves today that it should be represented in the game too. Maybe some international players would have less stuff on the normal report card than US born players, but there should be some info available about everyone.
For example: A guard could have plusses: A good shooter, great dribbler, fast in the open court and on the minus side: not the strongest player, not many inside moves, doesn't play defense etc. You remember the old report cards...
The drafting screen should enable you to open the draft card. It would show his name, birth date, height and weight, preferred position, the good abilities in writing and the bad abilities too and then the detailed scouting information you have done during the season. So it could be that the standard report would say that doesn't pass the ball well and you could see that his passing is ranked B- on report card... There should be some mistakes in there too...
Right now, the draft is just picking up two players that you have scouted. So if a player drops down in the draft, you probably don't have any info on him! No info?!?!? This is an impossible scenario in todays world. Maybe in the sixties, but not today... You just need to check out ESPN and NBA home pages to find info on the draft picks to find out how good their game is on a more general consensus... And college tapes are available to all the teams so you could check those out to get a general feel about a guy...
The scouting and drafting stuff should be reworked into something with more detail etc. etc.
Boy I got off-topic and fast...
Animations are not a must have... They are nice, but not a must have... Should concentrate on other areas first and then on the extra glitz and glamour that is purely added on and brings nothing other than atmosphere into the game.
