Practice Mode

Postby fgrep15 on Tue May 31, 2005 12:38 am

Does anyone agree that this year the practice mode needs to be enhanced? I think we need to actually be able to practice, not just have on guy in a gym shooting around.

Their should be FT practice with the new system, and also ability for us to have the whole team practicing, not just one guy.

If it's done properly, practice mode could be awesome. The ESPN 2K5 one is shithouse, you get 10 guys on a court and they just kinda stand there... I line them all up under the hoop and use 1 guy to dunk on everyone, but anyways... I think being able to have things like 3 on 2's and being able to have scrimmages with the bench vs the starters (which happens in the NBA) would be nice. Whether they do it or not is another matter, but I'm sure Ray Allen's sweat will make up for it

lol yea, maybe you could even run some plays or something. ESPN's one annoys me because of what you said, they all just stand there and do nothing, it's dumb. I also wondered why it's always so dark in the practice on ESPN.

Well I'll still hope.

It's be good to be able to run plays, at least you could perfect certain plays and use them in-game. To this day I've never used a set play properly in NBA Live, I either forget them or find it's easier to just find my own way to score. I think being able to practice would make them more playable.

Yes, I totally agree! As of right now, there is just about no point to the practice mode, unless you want to learn the controls.

Yea!! Maybe they should have a system a.l.a the FIFA series, where you could choose what you wanna practice once you get in, e.g. choose, Free Throw shooting, catch and shoot. hmm... I think a good one would be when they get into the two lines and go for the layup (or shot) and the other line goes for the rebound and pass. This would be a very good practice if the user had to control all of these, since you can practice your shooting, switching and rebounding so that you can do it quickly when you are playing, you guys get what I mean?
hmmm... but maybe we could add this to the wishlist for 07

Maybe they should have different gyms for differrent training and u could visit anyone of the gyms to improve on that specific thing.

Even adding the ability to practice free throws would be enough an improvement for me. Keep the current idea of a single player on the court for people who want to learn and practice freestyle moves and shooting, but a free throw practice drill and maybe some situations would make the mode much more useful. And of course, making it accessible during Dynasty Mode would be handy.

I feel the same way, every once in a while I work up to trying a play, and I can never get it to work... practice mode would be perfect to learn plays with.

I always wished that in practice mode, you could just set up scenarios. Think of it as some sort of gametime editor, where you could place a player on the court, tell him what to do, etc. For example, you could put down Shawn Marion and Joe Johnson and tell them to run a fast break, and you could practice scoring or making ally oops or whatever, practice pick and rolls, maybe even set a shot clock and practice your buzzer beating skills...

Sounds like a really great idea, but how would you play it? would it just be like a normal game but executing the play? Maybe we could use this to practice off ball movement? maybe they blink (for lack of a better word) a spot on the floor that your controlled player (w/o the ball) has to get to, and you try to move him there open to catch and shoot?

It could first off just show you how the play is ran and then it lets you try. You try to make the right pass at the right time or something to run the play properly. Once you have it down pat you could like choose to put defense out on the court and see how well you run it then

Even the ability to play some five on five games with squads you pick from your own team would be nice. I really like the idea of being able to learn plays, but we might be getting ahead of ourselves for NBA Live 06. Surely, making Practice Mode accessible in Dynasty Mode and adding a free throw drill would be practical, the rest could come later.

Definetely (Y) 99% of people who play nba live never run any plays is my guess. I'm guilty of that, I used to run proper plays back when it was clear how to execute the plays (playbook animations live 03-04) . Now i press isolate crossover pass dunk.

They do need team practice like in 2K. But you should be able to run plays with the defense defending and not defending like you can in Madden.

I don't see why bringing it up should be a problem. Its the truth. Ofcourse they need to bring back profiles, so you can save certain playbook sets to your profile(LIKE IN MADDEN) and easily switch without wasting time in a 2 player game with menu screens or giving away your playbook.

I run plays all the time, the Pick and Roll is definately a play.
Set pick, draw the defender, pass to open teamate, money, repeat.

lol, I think they're talking about more advanced plays, like triangle offense, flex, utah, etc.

Yea, but also not so basic, I want them to be more team specific. I want to see Detroit have the interior double screens, and have Rip running hard off the screens with Tayshaun as the trailer.

I want to see the Clippers running the high post pick with the roll or the elbow jumper as an option. I want to see the Raptors running MoPete on the curl and have him shoot the jumper or drive. I don't just want Flex!

LOL, I was trying to be sarcastic
But, Yea, it'd be great to begin with that actual complex plays are more effective than using just isolations and pick and rolls, that way, it'd be more realistic and the practice mode for plays would be helpful. Practicing plays, such as having Rip run around screens AND not only one mandatory repetitive way, rather, being able to react to how the defender is avoiding the screens. So, for example, if the defender tries to cheat on the screen, clear him off and go for an open jumper or go for the back door play for an easy dunk or layup
