Activating Player Roles/options during Game

When I play I often see a player or players with options under their icon such as 'block' or 'steal'.

How do I actually activate this or choose this for a player on the fly?

You have to hit the old back-down button and a face button. It's called freestyle superstar. You have to choose it before the game.
