I thought it was very straightforward actually. Spoiler ---> The guy repressed his past when he killed the girl and out of that repression, his identity along with his world was invented and his identity mirrored with that fat guy, kind of like in a schizo way till he finally came to terms with his past.
Donnie Darko was a little disturbing. Normally I'd enjoy that kind of movie, but the whole idea relating to time and science wasn't really something I was into.
