The Simulation/Arcade myth

Postby stclam on Sun Nov 17, 2002 3:08 pm

When those PS2 users said that Arcade Mode is actually Sim Mode, Sim Mode is Arcade Mode, I thought it's ridiculous, because i dont think EA will make such a big mistake.

Anyway, i tried Arcade Mode and played against Lakers today (Turn on the fatigue and all the rules), and i really feels that Arcade Mode is more realistic

1) The fg%, number of steal/blocks are nearly the same
2) No more crazy 3/4 court pass after i missed a shot, Fisher bring up the ball patiently
3) Shaq tends to hook the shot instead of a dunk if he were double-teamed

I'm not quite sure about it, but any other PC users tried the arcade mode?

I absolutely agree

I've only played about 6 games, but the last 3 were in Arcade mode. I would definitely say that it's more realistic. Of course, everything is subjective, but here is what I think I'm seeing:

Blocks are much more likely to be recovered, ie not go into the stands.
I can catch up on fast breaks.
3pt% is way down for the CPU team. (like 80% vs 10%)
I can win easily, ie by 50 pts on Starter, whereas before I was losing by 10.

I still think 2pt FG% needs to go down, as well as speed. I have a feeling that steals and blocks are going to become more of an issue at All-Star and above.

I think I found why people think Arcade might seem a little more realistic. When you switch to arcade mode, people tend to move the def+off foul up higher than the sim. When the def+off foul is higher it lowers the steals and blocks. I don't think it was switched, it is just something to do with the fouls. Try the sim mode with the fouls all the way up.

I've played some Arcade games, and the Cpu still makes run'n'shoot.

I agree with fvmdc that upping the fouls helps to do the game more realistic as there are less steals and blocks, and more fouls ---> more Free Throws.

conkeso its normal that the cpu does run and gun when u leave everything open i normaly have a man back on time and well only time i get alot of fast breaks against me is when i am behind and forcing shots.
so just play solid D and when on the attack take your time make sure everybody is in place then u wont get alot of run'n'shoot like u call it.

Miss open jumpers

Postby Stevish on Mon Nov 18, 2002 3:25 am

I don't know if the Arcade mode thing is true. I only played a few games with it. But one thing that I noticed, the computer would miss open jumpers, which almost never happened when uner simulation. And more layups and less crazy 360 windmills. This is all my own subjective opinion.

I played on arcade mode many times, and the CPU made many open shots.

Yeah I don't know I've played acade once and it seemed more slow-paced but I will try it again. I think it is all in my mind. :)

Upon further review, I've noticed a few things....When playing arcade

there are less dunks and the CPU's offense and defense is toned down a

lot. They do slow the pace of the game down a lot. They tend to shoot a

lot of jumpers when in the lane too. When they double in the post they

don't come up with a lot of steals. In general I think everything is toned

down a lot. I don't know why EA did this but yeah. Personally, I found

arcade mode really easy even on superstar playing against the 90's

all-stars. I think simulation is much more intense and truely does

represent the NBA more. Because in the NBA players wouldn't settle for

short in the lane jumpers, they would take it all the way to the hole.

the sim mode's fine with me...

Postby francis820 on Mon Nov 18, 2002 12:02 pm

for me, i prefer being in the sim mode. yes the AI (not allen iverson)'s tougher to crack and i'm averaging 130+ pa/g and over 10 TOs, being in the sim mode is more dynamic, realistic, and not to mention relives the ol' showtime years. never mind those blocked shots, 25 point deficits and opposing point guards having career highs in assists, i'm enjoying them all... win or lose... especially with their retro jerseys (and the lakers having a white alternate jersey).

ok, in fairness i'd like to try that arcade mode
