How does the plays.dbf file work?

Quick question - how does the plays.dbf file work (i.e. what do the various colums mean), can I edit which players get the ball for each play without it messing up the game bigtime, and is there any way I can set it so that certain teams use certain plays (getting the lakers to run the triangle, that kind of stuff?)
