DUNKING - breakdown, analysis and degrees of difficulty

Postby VCFAN on Fri Dec 03, 2004 4:11 am

In this thread im gonna take some of the more common dunks and discuss their degrees of difficulty (dod) from my opinion. Each dunk will be graded on a scale of 1-10 with 10 being the most difficult. I am a huge fan of Dunking in the NBA and I am also 6-5 so I can perform some of the simpler ones.

1. ONE HANDED DUNK- (dod-1) - probably the simplest and most common dunk in the NBA. Nothing much to it.

2. TWO HANDED DUNK (dod-1) - very common also and is very simple as well. compared to the one handed dunk you cannot get as high with the ball but you have a little more control of the ball so I gave it the same degree of difficulty.

3. REVERSE DUNK (aka 180) (dod- 2) - very common also and relatively simple. it follows the same as the two handed dunk only you do a 180 degree spin in the air and dunk the ball with your back towards the rim. Basically anyone who can do a regular one handd dunk can perform this dunk.

3. TOMAHAWK (dod-2.5) - same as the one handed dunk but you bring the ball back as far as you can before throwing ity down. Not too hard but exciting to watch.

4. ALLEY-OOP DUNK (dod 4.5)- just a simple alley oop is just catching the ball in the air and throwing it down. The hard part of a dunk like this is timing. If timing is done perfectly then it too is not a hard dunk to do.

5. 360 (dod- 6) - a very nice dunk. usually done on the open court and usually brings fans to their feet. You have to be able to get a lot of elevation for this dunk and not get disoriented in the air to be able to find the rim after the spin.

6. WINDMILL (dod. 6.5)- I personally prefer this over the 360 just cause you can take out all your aggression on the rim by throwing it down hard. I remeber Carter once threw it down so hard in a game he hurt his wrist. It too is usually done in the open court and also brings fans to their feet. You must be able to jump very high to get the arm rotation in time and it can be very difficult to rotate the arm in that way.

7. ROCK CRADLE (dod- 7.5) - only done a few times in NBA history by most famously Michael Jordan and Desmond Mason (2003 dunk comp). When done is extremely beautiful. Done on the open court not in traffic usually. Very unique and sort of creates an illusion in the air.

8. FREE THROW LINE DUNK (dod - 8) Only a select few players in the league can do this dunk because extreme vertical jumping is needed. Usually done in dunk competition but I have seen a few from a couple feet within the line in regular games. Just looks amazing cause of the distance travelled in the air.

THROUGH THE LEGS OFF ONE FOOT - (dod -8.7) (Kobe 1998 dunk comp. Lebron and Tayshaun Prince in all-star rookie soph game 2004) This dunk is one of the most prestigous dunks in basketball. Only a handful can do it in the nba.

ELBOW HANG -(dod - 9.4) - I have only seen Carter pull this off in the nba once in 2000 dunk comp. and his charity all star game although many players have attempted it. Only few players can get the elevation to do (Carter, J-Rich, and Lebron). I've seen some college players do this dunk. Many variations are available like reverse elbow hangs, and off glass elbow hangs but I have never seen one performed before. It also hurts the elbow too cause I've tried it on a much lower net.

THROUGH THE LEGS TWO FOOT TAKE OFF. (dod- 9.5) (eg. Desmond Mason, Vince Carter in their Dunk Comps). Looks nicer than the one legged through the legs and seems much harder. Only about 4 or 5 players can jump high enough to perform and you would be crazy to try this dunk in a game. The stadium just erupts if performed perfectly.

360 WINDMILL- (dod- 9.5) A top 3 dunk on my list. Carter did it in 2000 dunk comp. Commetators didn't know what to say. Because of it, Carter has been asked for 5 years to enter the dunk contest just to see it. Just looks beautiful.

REVERSE THROUGH THE LEGS- (dod. 9.8) J-Rich blew everyone mind when he won the tight battle between Desmond Mason in 2003. Just purely spectacular enough said. Oh yeah his off the glass through the legs was just as nice if not nicer.

360 THROUGH THE LEGS- (dod - 9.9) Never done in NBA although J-Rich has attempted it before. It is humanly possible cause I got a video of someone in college doing it. If someone tells me how to post a video I'll put it on here.

FREE THROW LINE THROUGHT HE LEGS (dod- 10). the hardest dunk I have ever seen made, by James White in college. Blew my mind. I was speechless. I think he is the only human who can do it unless Cater or J-Rich give it a try. I have the video but I dont know how to post videos.

Well There you have it. Some of my difficulty ranking are subjective because you can make for example a one handed dunk have a difficulty of 8 of you execute it perfectly and dunk on someone. This is my ranking of some of the most popular dunks. Now all of these dunks can have different variations to them by adding a pump or a bounce pass or something to that effect. There are some more dunks that I believe can be humanly possible but I have nver seen. A 540 but you would probably need a verticle jump of 45 inches to perform . Reverse elbow hang is possible (Richard Jefferson attempted it in 2003.) 360 Elobw hang might be possible but I'm not sure. A 720 would just astonish everyone although I dont know if it is possible. Only guys like Cater, White, and J-Rich probably know if it is possible. Basically have a dunk on my computer from every category and I will post one upon request if someone tells me how to. Tell me if you think one doesn't have the proper degree of difficult or so or make your own list. Enjoy.

Its not so easy to do, u gotta have good vision for it and also good handling and good reflexes.

If your talking about his 1995 High School McDonalds dunk contest then no he didn't. He had a nice one from the of the net but no free throw line through the legs.
I have it on my computer i just don't know how to post it.
I believe James White is the only one to do it. I have that too if someone wants to see it.

And DR J, it was his trademark. Used to do it all the time during games.

8. FREE THROW LINE DUNK (dod - 8)

Actually, quite a few people can do it. Heck even brent barry did it in the dunk comp :)
ELBOW HANG -(dod - 9.4) -

I've seen a guy put his whole arm and hang by his armpits in a european league dunk contest. French league i think.

And then there is slamnation. They're a group of dunkers doing dunks NBA players can't even do. They have two dvd's, amazing dunks. A 360 over several people and another player doing cartwheel dunks. In one video I saw him try a Cartwheel and then dunk it between the legs, he did miss it, but it was close.
what about a ft line dunk lifting off with both feet (Henry Bekkring or whatever he's called).
