Discussion about NBA Live 2004.

The Wishlist will return...

Postby Andrew on Mon Nov 11, 2002 6:24 pm

Next year we'll be doing the Wishlist again, using suggestions from this forum and email submissions. However, for the mean time, do not send any wishes by email, we're not compiling the list this early. In the mean time, this Wishlist board is open for discussions of missing and possible new features.

many things

Postby mcbiggins on Tue Nov 12, 2002 6:03 pm

Franchise Mode:
1) Real dollar amounts (I know, I know, the League won't allow it, but these are wishes after all)
2) Trading draft pics
3) sign/fire/create coaches
4) Better bench usage in sim mode (hopefully this is better in 2003, and I'll find out by the end of the week!)
5) more info on the player stats screen including awards won and a player's transaction history
Note: Some of the stuff Tim put in (free agent and MVP watch) sound great, and I think the Live team is starting to realize that on the PC many people are playing their game as a management sim for lack of any real competition. They should look at Madden 2003's great franchise mode and stay as far away as possible from the terrible franchise mode in the NHL series.

Gameplay:
1) Sliders for tempo, defense, shot accuracy, etc. Madden has it, NHL has it, when will Live get it? I'm sure that for every one of us who writes them asking for a slower, more realistic game, they get three letters from 12 year olds with PS2s begging for them to crank the tempo up eenhigher and add flames to the ball and such. Sliders would let the idiot patrol have 250-249 games and me play 12 minute quarters with a 92-87 score and not have both teams shooting 30%. And sliders would be a great safety net for them fielding complaints from us about the game. Us: "My team shot 78%. This sucks" Them:"Not out fault you're too dumb to figure out the sliders."
2) More mo-capping of various types of players. If the new demo is any indication, it takes five minutes for Mutumbo to get down court, but otherwise his movement is just as fluid as Kobe or Jason Kidd. they're up in Canada, so they can hire Greg Newton or somebody to get mo-capped as a 7-foot stiff. This game needs more lumbering! If I start playing as my beloved Raptors and see Montross pump fake somebody off the floor and then drive for an up-and-under layup, I may just headbutt my monitor.
3) Shoving!!! And rivalries too. But especially shoving. No need for bench-clearing brawls or even thrown punches. I just want to see a attribute for surliness (it could even be tied in to whether the player frowns or smiles). If a surly player knocks down or gives hard fouls to another sulry player a few times during the course of the game, then they go face-to-face, shove each other's chests, and get T'd up. If two hard-coded rivals are playing, then the chance for this to occur gets even higher. But please don't over do this, or things would just be too "Arch Rivals".
4) Intelligent dribbling/spin moves. One thing I'm really sick of is standing about 7-10 feet from the sideline and trying to drive with turbo and a spin move and seeing the player execute this huge turnaround that drives them right out of bounds. Madden does a good job of having the players be aware of the boundary lines and acting accordingly. If I run out of bounds, I run out of bounds. But a player should be smart enough to use a tight pivot spin when near the boundary instead of some Globetrotter routine. The same logic might even be used for the 3-point line. If you pump-fake and your toes are on the line, the player might look down, take a step back, and then shoot for 3 instead of 2. That would be great.
5) A catch-and-shoot play for last-second inbounds. When there's no time to land, set-up, and shoot the ball, there should be a selectable play where the user controls the inbounds and whoever catches it turns to shoot in mid-air without any additional user input. This is the best way I can figure to deal with this situation in a realistic manner.
6) Auto free-throws. I would love to have this option. Hit the checkbox for auto free throws and not have to worry about my aging reflexes ever again. Even the users team would shoot free throws as calculated by the CPU. And while I'm at it, none of this it gets harded to shot the moe you hit in a row crap. Statistical deviation should make even the best shooter miss his free throws every once in a while. And if the user wants to set his free throw slider (yes, the sliders are such a necesity that I'm assuming they will be in the next edition) to such an easy setting that they hit ervey shot, even with Shaq, then let baby have his bottle.

I'm tired. That was years of pent up Live frustration spilling forth. I lovethese games, but would like to see constant improvement from year to yar (other than new graphics). Next week I'll chime in with more wishes after having spent the weekend with the game.

It will be nice if when we play in franchise mode, has a pre-season betwen two seasons. Also, we could have more than fifteen players on our team in that pre-season, but when the regular season starts, we must choose 15 or less players.
The draft picks after the 20th coud be better players than we have now. The most of second round picks are bad players and in the NBA we have lots of good players who came from 2nd.
In this pre-season the game should generate another players, from several countries or from north america. These players would be free-agents.

Now I have to go, but I'll send other improvements for the game.
P.S. Sorry, my english is not so good.

It would e nice to add shortcuts for the substitutions, for example the keys 1 to 5 (1 for PG, 5 for Center). So you can manually execute substitutions as you wish and there's no need to pause the game, go into the menus etc.

I'd like the option of using the D-Pad for movement(that's why I returned my PS2 version). I should be able to play the game the way I want to.

I AGREE.....why in the hell would you make a game year after year...and take away features? (Custom teams) Nba live 2000 was the last live game I've played before 2k3...it was great. BRING BACK "CREATE TEAMS" with an easy way to put custom logos in the game...like you can in madden .

I especially like the suggestions of POETICDRINK2U who made alot of references to how madden does things [e.g., easy editing of graphic files, records, create a team, custom coach creation, etc.] and how NBA live should follow suit in some ways. Ironically, some of the things that I've implored madden to add, are the very things that NBA live already has [e.g., true customization of player portraits, faces, accessories, etc.]. And similarly, the things that many of us have wanted NBA live to have, seem to be present in madden [see above]. My question is since their both EA titles and presumably created by tiburon programmers, why don't they ever get together and make things standard across games, so that we'd only need on player editor or DB editor to aply to all EA sports games. Instead of doing everything on their own, why don't the designers of Madden, Live, Tiger Woods [who has an excellent course architect design package you should check out if you haven't], etc., first get together, discuss their commonalities and then branch off and create their own games so they can build upon each other. Maybe Andrew or Tim can give us some insight here.

For instance, instead of Madden allowing you to only edit main, midfield, sliver, helmet, and endzone logos, they should make it so that everything from the color of the grass [i.e., you may want a field like idaho state that has blue turf], the player attributes and accessories, to the people in the stans can be edited. Clearly the Live and tiger woods series seem to be in the vanguard in this area, so why not have madden use their strategy for its game so they are all standard. Similarly, since Madden seems to have the best GM system, a record setting/breaking system, coach creation, etc., then Live should collaborate with them so that all their sports games, including hockey use that system. This would eliminate so much of the confusion and disappointment that we have in some of the features of each of the games. Of course each game can have its little quirks [e.g., freestyle control in basketball], but some things like being able to import old roster files from previous games, and being able to draft players from the college game aligned with each series [e.g., being able to draft/import players from NCAA to NBA live or from NCAA football to Madden] seem like obvious things that would enhance the game. So standardization wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing as long as the game allowed maximum flexibility.

But of my most pressing things I'd like to see in live, these are just a few [in no particular order]:

A hall of fame that players could reach at the end of their career

Being able to import rosters from the prior years game and from the college game aligned with NBA live

I also like the auto-subs idea and free throw idea

I also would like to see a preseason, like Madden where after the first quarter the starters are pulled and your rookies can get a chance to experience player progression

Clearly a team creation feature and ability to delete in-game teams [e.g., lakers from a roster file]; why this was removed bewilders me

A coach creation feature, w/ a coaching pool

A better draft module

on-line franchise module that can support custom teams

An offensive and defensive play creator [like the one in madden for the consoles; yes I want to design my own princeton tigers back door cut offense or defensive trapping schemes]

More realistic gameplay [clearly scores of 150-100 are not really plausible]

Bring back more classic dunks like in Lakers vs. Celtics [Magic's patented lay-up, Jordan's air reverse, Barkley's guerilla dunk, Robinson's windmill, Malone's look away dunk, Hardaway's UTEP 2 step, Bird's fade away/360 3 pointer etc.]. Learn from the past, don't just cast it to the waistside.

And finally, think back to what made NBA live 2000 such a strong game and try to capture that. In my view, that was the best Live title yet [aside to showdown] and many people who didn't buy 2001 or 2002 were still willing to play live several years after its initial year. Figure out why they liked it soo much [player models good/not too muscular like they are now; easy player and stadium editing] and put alittle of that magic in, in 2004.

Best,

P

Improve the User Interface for 2004

Postby Knickerbocker on Wed Nov 20, 2002 6:02 pm

A) USER INTERFACE
There are too many “back” screens. If there could be a universal navigation bar, options and controls would be much quicker to use.
• Bring back drop-boxes for quick access to players, teams, stats.
• The reading screen is too small for the contents:
a. Lottery Draft:
• Scouting reports is huge, and it’s a pain scrolling through each candidate with such a small screen, it’s also a pain with such miniature up-down buttons.
• Make the interface more navigable with a better control console with large controls for quick access.
• With so many people in the draft pool, why isn’t there a clearer table, instead we have to scroll through each candidate. It is very frustrating.
• Have more options to describe the picks: college stats, or a bonus rating system would help (ie. Basic skills like long range shooting, dunking, defensive intensity)
• Bring back forward to next pick.
• Allow draft pick comparisons.
• Infuse random foreign players to reflect today’s shift in the scouting game.
• This is a portion which makes the Live Series playable, please improve it.

b. Trade:
• Same complaint, the screen is very unfriendly, the old system from 2001 was so much better.
• Enlarge the window, because users focus not on what the player looks like, but what their stats and ratings are before a trade.
• Allow the trading of draft picks. Forfeited picks during a draft are a big waste.
• Again, for a lot of users this is where we spend a lot of time, when the usability is so low, it gets very frustrating.

Knicker,

I also like some of your ideas here, as well as in the other "engine" thread, but I would only suggest that we prioritize some ideas when the final list is created. For instance, I agree a new user interface is a concern, but probably not as important/meaningful as your "chemistry idea" or "game play issues". Clearly, I'd put a new interface in the "luxury" catagory as opposed to the "necessity" category. The reason I say this is not because I dislike the idea overall, actually I like it, but often games like Live and Madden use it in their sales pitch as a great new feature [placing it near the top of new changes lists on the promo's for the game]. Yet, comparitively speaking other features that seem more central to enjoyment, as opposed to ergonomics and navigation, are slighted and left out as a result.

For instance, in the Madden Series by EA this year's game boasts a new user interface equipped with a team colored stripe, motion graphics in the background, a rotating helmet, etc., but the functionality probably isn't any better than the game from a year prior. Looks nicer and more asthetically pleasing, but is probably worse in terms navigation and overall functionality. And they undoubtedly spent quite some time on this feature, to the detriment of other more meaningful features [e.g., on-line custom franchise, custom team creation, etc.] that were left out of the game. I would hope that the live series worries less about asthetics and navigation, than about the simulation aspect of the game that you outlined in a separate post. That would seem like it would be a welcomed addition for all users irrespecitive of the pleasure/displeasure with the user interface. Hence the GM/sim aspect would be a "necessity" whereas the user interface would seem more like a "luxury". And when we compile the final list, at some point, maybe we should list our entries as such where there's a list for necessity aspects and a list for luxury aspects that we'd like to see but can understand if we don't see them.

Just a thought,

Best,

P

Hey Dr. P,

It's great to hear from like-minded individuals out there! :D

I agree that it is indeed a "luxury" item in terms of improvements, and other items such as simulation & gameplay should be prioritized.

Actually, this engine is already much improved in terms of rebounding and "auto-shoot" functions like layups and dunks. I only wish they could add a TOGGLE function to gameplay. This would distinguish realism from arcade gameplay. Such that blocks would only occassionally be swatted to the rafters, and flashy dunks only occurred a few times. Really... how many times in a game do you see Kobe, T-Mac or VC do a 360? It's because they are so rare that they get posterized.

But enough of my complaints. It's great to hear from you, and it's great to finally have Live for PC again.

Cheers to that,

"An offensive and defensive play creator/editor/playbook [like the one in madden for the consoles; yes I want to design my own princeton tigers back door cut offense or defensive trapping schemes]"

I forgot to add that I would especially like a play editor to be portable. By portable, I mean that just like one can copy image files and rosters and make them available for other gamers, the play creator/editor should be portable. Thus, the game's engine should create a file type that we can copy and send to others so that I create a dynamite offensive play, I can submit it to the live website and make it available to other users. Making custom playbook available in the same manner would also be welcomed addition.

Best,

P

MY WISHES:

Gameplay:
- lob passes
- leaners (didn't the previous games used to have this?)
- better passing : should recognize where the defender and pass away from the defender, not just straight to the player
- better stealing : should not stick to hand, stealing should just knock the ball loose and then either team can pick it up. and the computer shouldn't go for so many steals because when they go for a steal, u can just blow right by them.
- better blocking : i think they jump too high, seems like they stay in the air for a couple seconds. also they could have a second type of blocking animation where u just challenge for the shot by jumping up straight with hands up. i thought that holding up on the right analog stick and jumping was supposed to do that, but its the exact same block!
- taking charges: should still be able to move when taking a charge (but not too fast) and it would be a defensive foul if ur still moving.
- picking up loose balls : seems like the computer automatically goes to the place where the ball starts rolling on the ground. they should go towards the ball, not back away from it! and diving for the ball would be nice!
- jumping out of bounds to pass the ball: it seems like the only time this happens is when u pass the ball to a teammate who's running towards the sideline. why is he running out of bounds in the first place??? the only time i think it should happen is on loose balls, like after a block or a deflection.
- layups : they should do more normal layups, not always circus shots. also when players go for layups and dunks, it would be better if the animation wasn't totally fixed, like when the player is in the middle of a layup, the defenders shouldn't always go flying when they collide, while the guy going for the layup is totally unaffected.
- rebounding: it looks like a lot of the times after the ball hits the rim, it goes over the backboard. in the NBA, that rarely happens, and when it does, it's considered out of bounds.
- speed: a bit too fast.
- player movement: shouldn't be able to change directions so fast
- player ratings: more player ratings. players are too similar. need a bigger difference between superstars and bench players. some ideas for new ratings: shot quickness (how quick u can get shot off), heart + hustle, clutch (where did it go?), experience and attitude would be cool for team chemistry and stuff.
- better ai: a lot of times when my center or pf gets a defensive rebound, my pg, sg, and sf shouldn't all be running up the floor, making my pf or c bring the ball up the court. this needs to be fixed. some guys who aren't slow take their time running up the court. also too many 3s from point guards. why is jason kidd running up the floor and taking 3s all the time. also set plays go in slow motion. the players jog to the position they're going to.
- double teaming: seems to do nothing. the computer doesn't really care if he's double teamed or not. like if a guy in the post is backing down someone and a double team comes, he should pass out or just shoot. he shouldn't keep backing down the guy and then get the ball stolen.

well those are MOST of my suggestions for the next NBA Live off the top of my head. and thats just gameplay! i've got wishes for the other stuff too. if u want to hear them, tell me. or if u think my suggestions suck, i wan't bother! :D .

oh and another thing.
i don't think balls should be able to pass through a players body.
thats just not realistic!

and u should be able to set a play when ur inbounding.
and there should be create a play option!

and when using set plays, players should set screens for each other. i don't think i've seen this happen.

and the computer's best defensive player should guard best offensive player, not just match by position.

and the end of the game ai needs to be fixed. like foul when the game is close. and go for quick baskets, not just 3s all the time.

I'm with few of the guys on this list already... Haven't played the game yet, but later this week. Here is something that I'd like to see in the game:

1. Realistic cap

2. Trading three-way the way it was supposed to go (the player able to trade players between three different teams, it isn't even hard to implement)

3. Trading draft picks (the value could be related to the overall ranking of the team -> Overall 29th high value and Overall 1st low value, just make it the way the salaries work)

4. Feed back... (a reporter dissing your way of game and maybe suggestions of what you could try to do better from your other coaches)

5. Player personalities (there are so many difficult personalities that this would be cool, for example Isiah Rider is good in the game, but in the real league he's a pain in the b*tt 'cause no one know how much he wants to play and there players that are unhappy with their situtation Jalen Rose or the coaching staff unhappy with someone Latrell Sprewell)

6. Streaks... (players go on streaks where they play exceptionally well or poorly, for example Glenn Robinson this season, he hit 35ppg the couple first games and now he's scoring 15-17ppg)

7. Make the rookies develop more realistic and all players (the players developed according to statistics, if he played better then last season he should go up, instead of crashing 4 in the overall stat, and the whole package thing kind of takes the fun right out of it cause you look at a players development for couple of seasons and you can tell whether he will ever mount to anything. I know that all players never become super-stars, but some become solid d-players who does not shine in the spotlight, or good rebounders etc. And to tell the truth almost no one at the age of 20 gets worse at his game without a serious injury or a change in playing position [some players even start to excel in a new position in NBA] The ratings should alway go up, but how high should be something the development potential influences)

8. Make the rookies better. (Hate seeing those 50:s on speed or a 6 foot guard loosing a foot race to Shawn Bradley or Greg Ostertag. I'd like to see that) And how realistic is the fact that some power forward has defensive rebounds in the 50's because even a poor pg has def.rebs. in 60's, and the players with speed 90 never ever have quickness 50 (i'd like to see that guy too), seen these too... There is something done about these in 2003. And there should be some sleepers in drafts too so that not all the stars were drafted with the first 5 picks)

9. Rookies- Show stats of last season (this would prove very helpful in assessing a players ability and the wild high school stats would be crazy to look at when a player was averaging 20rpg and 7bpg etc.)

10. Let the manager effect the progress of players... Maybe say you need more strength, practice shooting, practice defense, gain speed and these would effect his development. Maybe setting these for the summer...

11. Coaches hire, fire etc. Effect on simulation and how happy the players are.

12. Feedback from the players, unhappy with training, unhappy with coach. Maybe getting a word about their future plans so you could ready your self for a possiblity of a player not re-signing at the end of the season.

13. Make the game more realistic by adding the FEEDBACK stream. The game says something about how you are doing. And the pressure from many sides players, coaches, media, the men with the money etc.

14. All-Star voting and week-end. Three-point shootout and the game.

Graphics are alway going to get better so nothing to say about them, that is something ea has always excelled at.

Oh, yeah the sliders are nice in the NHL so why not implement them to the NBA.

Make it like Madden, in a basketball sense of course
I mean madden is awesome, a sweet franchise mode, great gameplay, great graphics etc.
i mean i drafted a FS outta the 5th round, turns out the guy gos for 7 interceptions 89 tackles 13 pass deflections in his rookie year
top 5 rookie of the year
this is what we need in bball, sum guy outta the second round to explode, or even late in the draft
example
kobe bryant was a 13th pick, on live these guys get nowhere, same as t-mac he was a late pic
look at michael redd cliff robinson etc
all 2nd rounders
now c'mon this is sumfin ive always wanted in the draft mode
but to do with franchise, just make it like maddens

More Wishes

FRANCHISE MODE:

- everything everyone else said
PLUS
- it would be cool if players over the years gained weight or got taller, like when rookies come into the league, they're usually not strong enough for the NBA, so as they get older, they bulk up and get stronger.
- players should change during a season, for example they start the season off slow cuz they're out of shape. and a rating such as attitude determines how well they start off the season. and maybe the endurance rating can determine not only how long they can stay in a game, but also how well they do over the whole season. like if they're endurance is low and they play a lot of minutes, then by the end of the season they'll be tired out and won't play as well. so u have to manage how many minutes a player plays in a game.
- that idea about choosing what u want ur players to work on during the offseason sounds good. and then the player's attitude rating + potential rating determines how well they progress.
- i think experience should also play a part on players performance. like a lot of rookies are just as talented as other players, but they won't play as well until they get more experience. experience could affect offensive and defensive awareness, like how fast u pick up fouls, cuz rookies tend to pick up a lot of fouls.
- need to improve trade logic alot. i don't wanna be able to trade 2 nobodies for a superstar. some ideas how to fix trading system: rank importance of player on the team, age should be a big factor, determine what the team needs (ex. more offense or defense), maybe determine by how well the team is doing at the time: if the team is losing alot, they would consider rebuilding (would want draft picks), while a team thats going for the playoffs would want more experienced players
- in the offseason, it would be interesting if u could work out with the rookies. doesn't have to be complicated, just maybe like the practise mode and u can just play around with them.
- in addition to free agent watch for the upcoming season (which was a great addition), maybe there could also be an upcoming rookie watch so if someone like a lebron james is gonna be eligible for the next draft, then u can tank the season.
- i think there needs to be a team practise mode so that u can practise plays, cuz i still have no idea how to use the plays, other than the basics.
- implement the luxury tax. it would make it so much more interesting if different cities had different types of spending habits and have a fixed limit of how much they're willing to spend. for example, new york or dallas can spend like crazy. while smaller market teams only have a certain amount of money to work with and won't want to pay the luxury tax. but when u start winning, u can get better ownership and u'll be able to spend more. and the reverse for if u start losing where no one would want spend money on a crap team.

maybe i'm getting a little ahead of myself with some of these suggestions. but that would make the game so amazing!

Yes! The statement I agree with the most is make Live like Madden! Madden seems to always please or have some new pleasing feature every year! Live always has something new to piss you off every year. It'll have agreat new feature outweighed by unrealistic scores etc... Take everything( I mean EVERYTHING) from Madden, and incorporate it into Live. Madden has gang tackles. That can be used in Live. You could have the option of making someone like Garnett a agile pf who moves like a guard, or a bruiser like a Laimbeer, who moves like an oaf. Add the sliders. ADD THE SLIDERS. ADD THE SLIDERS. [b]ADD THE SLIDERS![/b] All Star weekend. Everyone has asked for this since 98. Keep 2003 graphics, dribbling, rebounding(just add more variation in it.) improve the AI. If that means the game has to take up a gig of space on the hard drive, or require at 750 MHZ of PC power, do it! Everyone hates how the players go after a loose ball right before it goes out of bounds. Don't make players like Kobe and T-Mac just burn you so the game can put up a good fight! I hate how Kobe comes down and every game, just hits like 5/8 from 3pt with defenders all over him, but you can't do the same. Make the computer play in the same world as you. Good defense should reward you. Make a realistic scores feature, so that the game can play real, i.e during your franchise, etc.., or play with easier scoring and more speed in a vs. game with only 5 min quarters, So if I play a 12 min quarter game or 5 min quarter game, I could get similar realistic scores. Make this option just that, an ON/OFF option. A stop button for Freestyle so I can continue to freak em, but stop in the middle of a driving crossover. A player career feature. Make your player, play him in SUmmer League NBDL, etc.., get offered contracts, Hall of Fame if he's good. Some sort of highlights. It was in old EA Games, why not now? All it has to do is show randomly created highlights from various players, with superstars getting more highlights than normal players. It's at the beginning of the game, make it practical, put it in the game! Add all NBA awards, and save if a player won them in his career stats. Add cut scenes for these. Bring back player intros! Stop taking out features! Add more classic teams! Madden tracks stats for way more players than in the NBA, so this should be doable. The gameplay is great except for speed, ai, steals, and the ridiculous always out of bounds blocks. Make freestyle do something on defense! Add at least half of these features, and imporve the gameplay, and next year, Live won't be 2nd to NBA 2k3. FreeStyle is the only thing that makes live able to compet right now. I hope you listen to us this time.
