How do you rate NBA 2K20 so far?

Postby Andrew on Mon Oct 14, 2019 10:11 pm

The game's been out a little over a month, and we've received about five or six patches that have addressed various issues. With that in mind, how would you rate NBA 2K20 so far, and has your general opinion/rating changed since launch?

During launch, 3/10. Gonna be that guy that reiterates what the public is saying - it is basically a 2k19 dlc. After the patches, I guess its a 4 out of 10? Solid 3.5 lol. Take note that this is only based off of MyLeague and Play Now, no mycareer or myGM.

PS: How do i fucking call plays for certain people? Back then it was L1 then you just pick which player and pick what play. Now, it's replaced by a Favorite Plays option.

I gave it a 6.

Gameplay outweighs content for me, so while 2K20 is the most content rich sports game that exists (or has ever existed), it falls short in many areas gameplay wise. Legacy issues, intelligence issues, player movement issues, defense in general, hold the game back from getting a higher rating from me.

Nothing is more important than the on court basketball product, feel etc. Since launch, I mostly have the same opinion about the game.

However, I am still excited to see what they bring forward for the next generation of gaming (PS5, etc). I am sure they will try and blow us away just like they did with 2K14 for X1 and PS4.

I think that's a fair assessment. It's got some legacy issues and new issues alike. For what it's worth, there are issues with MyCAREER and MyGM as well, so your opinion may not be much more favourable taking those into account anyway.

I could be wrong, but I think the new method is to simply customise the Favourite Plays. Certainly not ideal for everyone, but I believe that's the only option.

Definitely fair sentiments as well. However, I'm not so sure about the next generation. I feel like a lot of the things that have become issues during this generation - a focus on the online side of things and pushy recurrent revenue mechanics - are still going to be problematic as the next generation launches. Perhaps that's cynical of me, but it feels like gaming in general has gone down a bad path, and it's going to take more than better tech to improve the overall experience.

Everything is geared towards VC, and that's a bad thing as far as I'm concerned, 2K just wants the "bag" of cash. Also might piggyback on Dee's assessment of gameplay issues being of the utmost importance. The transition defense is horrid,(they have settings for this, but they are non-existent) CPU constantly cherry picks with no defensive players anywhere in sight, The unimpeded drives to the hoop where you can't move players for weakside help fast enough, the ever present offensive rebounding bug where the CPU gets 3-4 attempts at putbacks, pretty sure I'm missing a few more. I think the presentation is top notch, it always has been, and the overall gameplay has improved, while they limited on the fly game calling, to just a few plays, (hate they changed that) 2K has had ample opportunity to fix these issues, but since they're the only game in town, so to speak, they've ignored it. The defensive side of the game, is a dealbreaker for me at this point.
