Looking to buy a new monitor

Talk about NBA 2K20 here.

Looking to buy a new monitor

Postby rickberge on Sun Sep 15, 2019 4:54 am

Hey community,

I'm just curious on how much a good PC monitor factors into the overall experience (input lag, graphics, smoothness,etc..) with NBA 2k20 or 2k19.

Right now I'm just playing on a regular 35in HD TV monitor that's a lil outdated. The specs for my current PC is:

CYBERPOWERPC Gamer Xtreme GXi10180A Desktop Gaming PC (Intel i7-7700 3.6GHz, NVIDIA GTX 1060 3GB, 8GB DDR4 RAM, 1TB 7200RPM HDD, Win 10 Home

I've been researching the difference between a good PC gaming monitor and TV and it seems like the PC monitors give the overall better experience. For those that have a good PC monitor, what specs do you recommend? Price is not really a factor but not anything over 1k. I was looking at the ViewSonic VX4380-4K which has 10-bit SuperClear IPS panel and 3840x2160 resolution and a refresh rate of 60hertz.

Just let me know if there are any other specifics to look for in a monitor. I only play 2k and for some reason, the game feels sluggish and herky-jerky at times.. thinking a new monitor will do the trick but maybe not.

Thanks
rickberge

If you want a real new and better experience, buy a G-Sync Monitor (cf https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nvidia_G-Sync )
Why ? because you could disable vsync and play at > 100Hz, when frame rate drop (till 40) you dont feel it etc...
Gsync monitors are pretty expensive. I got my Dell S2417DG for about 430€.
I never regretted my purchase. On NBA2K, but also on others games.

BTW I dont think you need 4K Monitor because of your average GPU.

This. G Sync monitors are great. Currently using one right now and playing 2K on it. I don't recommend that ViewSonic monitor you're looking at simply because your GPU wouldn't fair well with 4K. You should check out the LG 32GK650G-B as well. It's around $429 USD and it's a 32" QHD (2560 x 1440) VA panel w/144hz refresh rate. I recommended that since it seems you're looking into larger monitors.

The Dell is good too, but I'm not a fan of TN panels.

Monitor, or TV, I think you can be happy.

I play on a 50 inch samsung HDTV, and I have no input lag whatsoever. All the videos you see on my youtube channel are using that TV. I paid $400 for the TV at Best Buy. It has 4k as well.

I have no recommendations on monitors, but if you decide to go the TV route, the Samsung models are really good. Some people don't have the space for a 50 inch, or just like a smaller setup. So totally get why you would to get a monitor.

Good luck!

Sorry Dee, you dont feel it, but "i have no input lag" is wrong statement
unless you play with vsync off what i doubt because without gsync or freesync monitor it's impossible to turn vsync off without tearing https://www.blurbusters.com/gsync/preview/
You can read more about input lag and gsync following these links :

When I say I dont have input lag, I mean I notice NO DIFFERENCE with reactiveness on my TV or a monitor. Everything happens the instant I hit a button (unless the game itself has lag or heavy animations)

I play Borderlands 3, fallout 4, Dragons Dogma, Playgrounds, etc and have no delay when I push a button or when it happens on screen.

Input lag can be measured on both monitors and tvs to some level, and I understand that input lag can be represented in stats for both. I'm saying I literally do not notice any difference when I play, nor do my brothers. It feels perfect on our tvs whether playing first person shooters or sports games.

We play madden 20 for the PC as well, same thing.

I think if he wants to go higher than 60 fps, he should def get a monitor. For me, its smooth as hell at 60, and my videos are all uploaded at 60 fps and they really smooth, and its steadier and better quality than console. But some people want to be able to achieve 144 fps, etc. Not a need for me, but could be a want for someone else.

He said his TV was outdated. So was just letting him know that I had a newer, affordable TV that works great for me. I think he should weigh both options.

Its not about TV or Monitor, but about vsync on (TV or normal monitor) VS gsync on.
You have no difference when you play with your brothers, because you play with vsync ON on all those screens.

If you're curious, i suggest you to try to play your games with vsync off (and try to ignore tearing, its hard but for the test).
You will feel our (gsync users) reduced input lag and feel your games differently.

I have already tried that, I've been playing on PC for about 6 years. I literally dont notice any difference, neither does Nick or Mark.

Again, either way not a big deal. Just letting him know what my setup is and that it worked well for me if he wanted to get a bigger setup (say a 50 inch tv), and if he thought that 60 fps was sufficient for him.

I know Phillips came out with a fairly affordable 40 inch monitor, but I'm not sure how great it is for gaming. I didnt look into it enough.

After playing on the setup I have, It wouldnt feel right going smaller, and I think part of it is that I have it set up in my living room. So its also the main tv.

IMO it's a big deal and a game changer, specially on this part of the request :

If you have a decent PC configuration with a 2/3 years graphics cards, i always suggest you a monitor with Gsync (for nvidia users), now i have about 2 years of hindsight and experience with mine.

Right, and I am saying that his sluggish feel could be that he us using an older outdated TV. As I have none of that on my games. As in, if Rick was over my house (cmon over Rick), he would have the same handle on things that I do.

He can get a monitor, not a big deal just saying tvs DO WORK very, very well given you get the right one and your PC specs are up to par.

I've been complimented a lot on my gameplay, and that wouldn't be possible without the games being incredibly reactive on the sticks. Meaning the ability to change directions when you want, explode off the catch, touch pass alley-oops, etc.

All TV setups are not created equal, just like all monitor setups are not created equal. A monitor might better suit him, a TV better suits me. Just letting him know not to completely disregard the right type of TV setup.

He can do what he wants.

So in your case, you would play better with a FreeSync Monitor :

AMD Vsync ON Latency (MS) 102ms Latency (Frames) 6.1 frames
phpBB [video]

AMD FreeSync ON : Latency (MS) 59ms Latency (Frames) 3.5 frames :

Of course, he will buy what he want, but i guess he had now all the elements about this technology.

Again, he can get what he wants. Just dont want him to completely count out getting a TV if he wants a bigger setup, because mine works awesome for me and is incredibly reactive. We literally dont feel any lag playing NBA 2K games, including this gens or last gen ones.

Just like 60 fps is great for me, and smooth as hell. But, he could want more.

I'm sure Rick appreciates this back and forth, and could help him with his decision

Here is what I am talking about with my tv, and how not all are created equal. And I just found my receipt, I paid $329 for the TV at Best Buy.

I highlighted the one that I have. Anything under 20ms for Input Lag is considered excellent for a TV, mine is roughly around 13. The picture quality is excellent as well.

Image
Image

Anything 0-20 is considered excellent here

Image

https://displaylag.com/testing-method/

Some of the best monitors have around 10ms at for Native Resolution at 60hz, and with Native Resolution around 4ms.

Image

But for me to be able to play on a 50 inch screen, with no notice of any input lag, with great screen quality, and regardless of what I am playing (NBA 2K, first person shooters, RPGs, action) etc. Its more than worth it. Rather than shelling out bigger bucks for a larger sized monior (Certainly not 50 inches), where I don't notice any difference in the input lag at all.

This is my old tv that my brother is using that is on the left on that picture I showed. Input is roughly 22.ms. Almost all the videos on my channel of 2K17, 2K18, 2K19 etc are using that tv for games against my brothers or the CPU. Literally was fantastic and incredibly reactive. My brother still uses it to play Borderlands, and other games with me online (We connect LAN or join up somehow)

Image

Rick has an old tv, mine I bought recently and its a 2018 model. His input lag could seriously be around 60, or even more. And I doubt it has a game mode in the settings.

Just don't want anybody thinking they can't achieve amazing reaction time using a TV with your PC, and you don't need to break the bank doing it either. I have it hooked up this way and use wireless xbox one controllers as if it was a console.

For anybody who decides to buy that tv (Off chance) after me posting this, they are available on best buy and Amazon, and I couid give you my other settings I tweaked with the TV for best picture.

Monitors can achieve better input lag scores and higher FPS than 60. However, TVs are no slouches when you get the right one, and you certainly dont have to break the bank. The Vizio was only a few hundred, and the Samsung I am using right now was only a few hundred. And I can game on 50 inches with no noticeable lag at all.

Here is my brother and I playing against eachother (showing Rick if he hasn't seen it) on that samsung TV. Incredibly reactive on the sticks, I'm using the Lakers hes the Wolves. We notice no delay whatsoever, you can probably tell by the moves/counter moves, alley-oops etc pulled off.

Wow great insight guys! I really appreciate this. Just trying to have a great 2k experience. I'll continue to look into it. Also, does the PC monitor size matter in regard to input and performance? If I go the PC route I was looking at 40" or bigger.

This TV/Monitor will replace the one in my sunroom.

Dee, again : you dont feel any input lag, but you have twice input lag than me. Even when you're at constant 60FPS with vsync on, your frame rate isnt at 60fps all the time (use a real tool to measure that, you have variations, even minor variations).
Definitly, you simply cant compare Vsync ON with any excellent TV/Monitor vs Gsync/Free sync ON monitor. Sorry, but you just cant compare your experience (playing with vsync on at 1080p, 60hz, 60fps) and mine (playing at 1440p, 144hz, 80~120 fps).
You're like someone with poor eyesight with no glasses that think he has good sight. Then the day he put glasses, he discovers the world with more details and precisions.

rickberge wrote:Also, does the PC monitor size matter in regard to input and performance? If I go the PC route I was looking at 40" or bigger.

Size has no impact. But resolution has a huge impact.
With your graphic card, you should play at 1080p (full hd) resolution to stay at 60fps. So if you want a big screen > 32", take a TV because the final result will be better in term of image quality.
But for a better flow and game feeling with no stuttering, trust me : buy a Gsync Monitor ! and turn off vsync ;)

I can compare, I have tried on both. The point is: he can have a great experience using a TV or a monitor, he just has to select the right one. That point stands.

I have a GREAT experience on my TV. I literally feel NO LAG when hitting a button and when it happens on screen. The "twice as much" input lag thing is moot, because both input lags are considered VERY LOW and both are excellent to play on.

His TV is old, he hasn't tried it on a newer TV like mine. If he wants to save money and go BIG with his setup, while having a great gaming experience, he can do that with a TV.

I have no stuttering, great flow and feel on my TV. I have VSYNC on and my games stay at a constant 60 FPS.

That doesn't change.

Sticky, can Rick have a great gaming experience on the right TV or not?

And the bottom line is, we are BOTH RIGHT.

1. ME: Rick can have a great experience with a TV as long as he buys the right one. Reactive, smooth, high quality gameplay = Correct

2. You: Rick can have Great gameplay with the right monitor, and play at a higher FPS and lower measurable input lag = correct

That doesnt change that both are great experiences. If you were to say that Rick couldnt have a great experience using a TV for gaming, you would literally by lying.

There is a 75 inch TCL TV that has 11ms of input lag, where its affordable. 75 inch is crazy, but Rick could have a GREAT EXPERIENCE with that 75 inch TV if he chose to go that route. It was rated one of the top 10 gaming tvs recently.

He should consider both. Both could make him happy. If he wants to go with a monitor, doesnt care about size, and doesnt care about using it as a TV for cable etc, and wants the extra bells and whistles from a monitor, he can go for it. But again, that doesnt mean his experience cants be great with a TV, it CAN

If you are trying to tell me that my own experience isnt great, where my brothers and I have created thousands of hours of memories and gameplay, just because we are playing on a TV, you are literally wrong and that makes absolutely no sense. My whole point is that Rick hasnt experienced a newer TV, and that he can have great reactive gameplay like I do using one, therefore he should keep that option open. I personally think he will be happy with both!

10 ms for a TV is quite good. I actually might buy that tv. How is the HDR on the TV, dee?

considering that we don't have the hardware (gpu/cpu) for 4k 60fps.... Unless you go crazy expensive, and then ray tracing is coming to push fps back down .... and the mointor implementation of HDR is horrible. (been waiting for an HDR monitor, but the implementation are sooo bad across all manufactures right now). I've been looking to get a good 4k TV (30 fps) for gaming, just for the proper HDR implementation.

anyways, that's actually a pretty good TV. Will have to read up more about that TV.

But yeah, both a good TV or a good monitor are good options. I got an AOC 1080p monitor from, like 15 years ago :) :)

In both case, he will have a beautiful screen for playing, and probably at the same resolution, the image is even beautiful on TV because of interpolation components and other effects.
But on the initial point "overall experience (input lag, graphics, smoothness", no TV can match gsync/freesync solution.
Again, saying the opposite is a wrong statement.

I didnt say i dont believe you about having a great experience with your tv. I dont sell Gsync monitors (in fact i was even sceptikal before i had mine) and what is important is that you like what you have.
But this statement "1080p 60hz + 60fps + vsync on" give you the same experience than a "1440p 144hz 80~120 fps + gsync on" is ridiculous.
You dont need those minor input lag, extra fps, hz and pixels, but the result has to be different. But if you dont see any difference, you should consider to consult an ophthalmologist.

About 60fps, you say it's constant. But on biggest games or with mods with big textures (remember your stuttering with my dornas ?), then games can go under 60 fps even for 1sec.
With vsync ON, you'll really feel the difference when fps drops and then come back to 60. With gsync, the game stays fluid (unless you go under 40 fps).
For example, i can play The Witcher 3 at 1440p, max details, with no problem with my gsync monitor. With my previous screen, same PC config, it was impossible because of the FPS drop.

Its solid, it talks about it a hit here as far as HDR10 and HDR goes.

https://www.techradar.com/reviews/samsu ... ue49nu7100

You know when players are at the line and they have the cutscenes that are really close? Players are literally popping out of the screen.

When putting it on game mode, it will look a bit dark. But all you have to do is up the backlight brightness and the picture look superb. I put it on game mode and just up the backlight, and I dont notice any lag whatsoever.

And thats really the point I've been trying to make the whole time. If he wants a big setup, that gives him great gameplay and looks awesome, he doesnt have to break the bank. He can get a TV like that one, spend under $400 and be good to go.

If you decide to buy the TV Bongo, let me know. I will send you my settings.

I will send you my settings.

yeah, will hit u up if i get it. havent been in town much to do anything, lol.
anyways, i like Rtings.com 'cause they compare similar stuff. so they compare the nu7100 to similar TV's.... they don't compare the nu7100 to $1,800 OLED displays.

but yeah, been looking to move my PC gaming from the desk to the TV.... but havent been home much the past year. anyways, the nu7100 is a good tv option. I'll have to check out more reviews in a few months when i have time to move the gaming to the living room

rickberge wrote:Hey community,

Thanks

Anyways, to the original poster, rickberge, here's my take on your question.

I found these two videos on youtube. they are for the 1060 6 GB
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XHPQqI6SB2s 1920x1080p ----- Ultra graphics Settings ---- 60 fps
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g5zoVGMMz4g 2560x1080p ----- High graphics Settings ---- 60 fps

Now, buying a moniter/tv is perhaps the most difficult thing you can do in this market. It depends on what you personally value. Now, your 1060 3GB is about 30% slower than the 1060 6GB videos.
in the youtube videos ... with a 1060 6 GB .... he could hit 60 fps with ultra at 1080p , but had to turn it down to "high" settings at 2560 x 1080p to get 60 fps... (and even then, in the 2560 x 1080p he has some frametime drops during the gameplay.)

If you want to play on Ultra Graphics settings, then you maybe should just buy a 1080p monitor.

or, you could get a gsync monitor. So, if your fps fall below 60 fps , then the gameplay will stay smooth.

But there are other factors, sooooooo many other factors. Like black levels, input delay, color gamut, HDR input, 8-bit vs 10-bit, panel type (ips, va, tn, led), ghosting, HDR halo effect... probably other stuff i forgot to list. there is also the chance of getting a bad monitor display and having to send back the same monitor 3 or 4 times.

honesly, you would probably be better off asking this question at the -- reddit buildapc -- or the --- [H]ard Displays forums--- they'd be able to give you a better answer.

regardless, there isn't a perfect monitor or tv .... mostly just what is important to you. But, the 1060 3GB is your bottleneck, regardless of how many pixels you try to push

for instance, i was just parusing these reviews about https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_9TY1c9W0aQ about the 2019 QLED 4k .... $2,000 dollar TV. compared to 4 tv's... i wouldn't buy any of the 4 TV's in the review .... even if they was only $100 bucks.... but that's just my personal preference.

for instance, for me personally, I hate curved moniters. Just my preferece.

I also hate "local dimming" because of the halo effect ....
from the $2,000 TV video listed above ... video time with timestamp.... looks worse youtube full screen https://youtu.be/_9TY1c9W0aQ?t=217
Just drive me crazy while playing a game.

So I put the CPU on my TV in the den which is a newer model (bought it 2016 brand new) 55" Sony TV and I noticed on the video settings (2k20) that I can all the way up to 2560 × 1080 and I think even higher. Couldnt do it on the 35inch that I currently play on.

But I noticed bongo stated that my bottlekneck was my 1060 3GB as opposed to the 1060 6GB...as I'm still learning with the PC gaming, in order for me to get the ultimate experience I basically need a more powerful graphics card.

Even when I played on my newer model TV (not sure about the specs, pretty sure it's not good as Dee's TV) it still felt a lil clunky. And not responsive as I like...it may just be 2k20 cause I noticed people saying things about the movement.

I noticed the input lagged more on the defensive end. If I'm playing the pick and roll and I try to switch to the man to pick up the roll man, it seems like I'm a step slower. That was one of the reason why I wanted to research a new monitor/TV.

Not all tvs are created equal, just like all monitors are not. Just because the TV in the den is newer doesnt mean it has low input lag.

And yeah, 2K20 is a lot like Live 19 in the way that it has lag and feels sluggish by default in many ways. If I go back and play NBA 2K17, 2K14, 2K11, 2K9 etc, the games are more reactive and are not as sluggish as 2K20. So you could be experiencing some of what the game actually has. The game has poor foot planting, and is heavy in animations.

Any other games you can try to compare?like older 2Ks?

Yea I'm try 2k18 which is the oldest game I got. I'm starting to believe it's more of the game itself. I really like the way 2k19 plays (after I re-did the roster with a good slider set). I think 2k20 is so animation based especially with the dribble penetration and it feels like the CPU takes over, which results in input lag when I want to break out of a dribble.
