Is there an easier way to raise the overall than having to spend a ton of VC?

Legitimately? It takes a lot of grinding, aiming for the Daily Bonus every day, spinning the Daily Prize Wheel for a chance at VC and MyPOINTS, putting up the best stats you possibly can, getting more fans so you can increase your endorsement earnings, and so on. It is a long, tough grind though.

There are obviously hacks that can be made with external tools, but it's not something we've really supported or discussed in this community. There are a couple of reasons for that. First of all, it leads to bans from 2K (if you're modifying an online save), so it's very much a "do at your own risk" type of thing. Secondly, we're not that big on it around these parts as it's contributed to the decline in quality of the online scene on PC, thanks to all the hacked players with ridiculously long arms, maxed out ratings and Badges, and so forth. Modding is already treading a line, so we like to be careful, and try to preserve the quality of the online experience as much as we can from a community perspective.

With that being said, if you're just playing the NBA side of MyCAREER, if you put Steam into offline mode you can start a non-connected MyCAREER, which you can more safely manipulate with tools such as the Cheat Engine. There are a few guides in the Modding and Tutorials subsections, though because of the aforementioned care we take not to get people banned or contribute to online hackery, they may not have all of the details you need to make all of the changes you want. Hopefully that should point you in the right direction if you want to look into it further, though.

This is assuming that you're on PC, of course. If you're on console, it's basically grind or pay.
