It's mostly down to trainers and cheat engine these days. Before he joined the team at Visual Concepts, Vlad had a look at the roster files in NBA 2K15, and said they were basically impossible to decode. Presumably, the situation isn't much different now. That's why we don't have the easy-to-use tools like we used to. That, and we don't have as many programmers in the community these days.
